Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

5:2 Thread number 54: Do you think you are what you eat ? Do NOT hunt down a skinny person for lunch ...... instead learn WHEN to eat.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2015 15:35

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

ButtonMoon88 · 19/06/2015 10:19

1lb down today! What a relief Smile

Iamblossom · 19/06/2015 11:34

think today might end up as a mini fast day - haven't bothered with breakfast as wasn't hungry and then went straight to the gym and ran 5k. Now having a coffee as haven't had one yet today, so couldn't contemplate food before that, and looks like it will end up being lunch time before I eat. planning a mushroom omelette with salad.

Thank god for threads like these enabling us to navel gaze so much! imagine how boring it would be do discuss this endlessly in real life, my DH would divorce me!!

BigChocFrenzy · 19/06/2015 11:41

That's very sensible, mindful drinking Bread and Wine

Lots of congratulations for progress today:

catcalledjohn for SV and inches NSV

Button for SV. Don't fast at a concert, just eat sensibly as you described and enjoy Blur.

Well done everybody; you're going into the weekend on a high, but just stay sensible.

Thanks BigChocFrenzy - just found out that a glass of wine is about 160 calories!!! I hadn't thought drinks would have much impact...maybe that's where I've been going wrong all these years...

TalkinPeace · 19/06/2015 16:53

OctopusArm
Booze is an absolute killer for calories.
I like to drink at the weekend so deliberately eat less Monday to Thursday so that I have leeway
That and when non sober, people get the munchies and find the bits of junk food they denied they owned - or in my case, cheese Grin

TalkinPeace · 19/06/2015 16:59

A quick thought on
You look well / Have you lost weight?

We live in a society which has become overly accepting of obesity
AND
The most common commercial weight loss methods are doomed to failure
SO
Its become a problem area to discuss - which is a bad thing

I'm a gym bunny and we openly ask each other if weight loss or gain is deliberate
if people start to look too thin we tell them
when one girl tipped over into anorexia, the medics in the changing room sorted her a referral
when people start to look heavier than normal it is mentioned

out in the real world, people shy away from stating

  • the obvious
  • the right thing
BUT rather than saying I'm losing weight just comment that I've decided to get fitter for my long term health it means the same thing and is then an open topic of conversation for all, and not too judgey Smile
stripytees · 19/06/2015 17:18

Chewing the 5:2 cud might count as snacking, careful out there! Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 19/06/2015 17:23

Very true, tip

The most difficult thing for me to get used to on Mumsnet (and probably in the wider world outside my geeky / gym corner) is the super-sensitivity so many women have about weight.

I grew up late 1950s - early 1970s, when being overweight was rare for anyone under 40 and there was hardly any form of social media, so noone thought about weight.
My limited social circle of fit gym rats or geeks (work & family) means I never realised how emotional the topic of weight is for most folk in the UK.

Very difficult to solve a problem that causes such pain to discuss.

Iamblossom · 19/06/2015 18:14

So. Second big decision of the week after resigning, was to get ALL my hair cut off this afternoon.....think I like it.....Hmm

Am up to 405 calories so far today but Dh is cooking chicken curry.....how on earth do you MFp a homemade portion of chicken curry?

Meerka · 19/06/2015 19:05

wow, blossom ... drastic! :)

mootime · 19/06/2015 19:20

I was going to try to fast today but woke up HANGRY! I have effectively done one FD and 3 mini FDs this week so an NFD is fine. Going to try to be mindful this weekend as its a bit of a social extravaganza and I wasn't to have lost next week too.

Question for the wise. I went to the docs today and I've been put back on the Pill (I thought I was too old, but apparently not...). Does anyone know if the pill really makes you gain weight? Or is that just a myth...?

TalkinPeace · 19/06/2015 19:45

iamblossomlosing weight by cutting hair off is cheating Xx

mootime
you have mail

fusspot66 · 19/06/2015 19:56

Hi there, I'm still doing the 5:2 and noticing my belt going in a few notches. I feel livelier. I'm trying to just eat mindfully on non fast days without calorie counting. FD today and tea was salmon served on courgettes cooked with lime zest, 5-spice & black pepper. Now it's the bit I find hard - evenings. And yes, it's nice to have somewhere to obsess about it and get great tips. Thanks all.

stripytees · 19/06/2015 20:52

A lot of my friends are really into the whole Fat Acceptance movement and it really seems it often translates to thinking being overweight is the only right thing to do. You know the whole "real women have curves" thing... I see that a lot on MN too. And a lot of people completely refusing to accept that weight and health are in any way connected, or that what you eat matters. I have a friend who had gastric band surgery and her diet is still Poptarts and pot noodles, just less of them. Confused

Anyway, rant over.

mrsmugoo · 19/06/2015 22:32

I used to go on the MFP forums but I had to stop because the whole attitude of eat what the hell you like if it's within your calorie allowance really bothered me. There was a suspicion of anyone who believed in clean eating like they were preaching voodoo or something.

Yeah sure you'd lose weight eating 1200 calories a day of junk food and diet coke but it's not very nourishing is it?!

Meerka · 19/06/2015 22:35

mm that sounds ever so tasty fusspot

It's odd how some people believe that weight and health aren't connected. I'm willing to believe there are a few people who are just naturally rather padded and healthy with it, but there's a huge amount of evidence that being overweight is seriously unhealthy in the long term for most?

Course, you can make the decision to live with that risk if you want to. But it seems odd to just deny there's any risk at all.

acatcalledjohn · 19/06/2015 23:23

Moo: It made me gain/unable to lose.

MrsMugoo, you have just prevented me from ever visiting the MFP forums. I'll stick to the app and chicken salad for dinner! Rather that than Stripytees' friend's diet...

Been good at work today, the DP and I decided on a carvery. All fine and dandy, didn't go nuts, but about half hour later my bowels just went nuts. I bet it's a remainder of the campylobacter I suffered about 15 months ago.

So since getting home all I've had is water. I suppose it has prevented me from ingesting those lovely empty calories aka beer Grin

mrsmugoo · 20/06/2015 08:13

I logged another loss today taking my total 5:2 loss to just short of 20lb and two dress sizes.

Yesterday's NSV was purchasing a full set of new underwear including my first real bra in 2 years (my post breastfeeding boobs don't really need one, but it's nice to get a bit of a boost for an outfit silhouette)

Today I'm doing my "Glastonbury shop" and it'll be cans of gin & slim, fruit and nakd bars instead of beer and Pringles. Taking my 15 month old for half of it so that'll halve the drinking anyway!

Iamblossom · 20/06/2015 08:23

Ended up at about 1300 cals yesterday.
