Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9
FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
==================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Was doing so well with FD then clients surprised me with champagne, cake and whatever the word is for endless delicious savoury things... too tipsy to remember. well done everyone on your successes, commiserations with fellow failures. Grin

Laska42 · 21/04/2015 20:15

A good tip that used to work for me when you are struggling on a FD is to go and sort out your wardrobe! try on the clothes that are too small and choose something far too smal as your ultimate goal thing and hang it where you can see it when you open the door. . then something which is Just too small and hang that in front also . every week , try on both.. its very motivating..

I used to aim for sunday, tuesday and thursday. (i was always been a fan of 4:3) now im back ive fallen into the old habit of sunday/monday and thursday it seems .. but i think that Monday and thursday is good for 5:2..

NFD today , but ive only has 950 so far , and I think thats it for me ..( unless I eat all the frozen grapes I have ) ..

Elsasalterego · 21/04/2015 20:49

Laksa - frozen grapes? Intrigued!

Seem to have managed an old-style FD today. 320cal just this evening on a turkey and veg stir fry. Have cals left to have some weetabix before bed. Also I managed to get out in the sunshine and do a slow 6k whilst DS cycled his bike. It was such fun for both of us! The anxiety I was feeling last week seems to have gone down considerably (hence making sure I am getting lots of running in, it helps me feel positive).

ErrolTheDragon · 21/04/2015 21:13

Elsa - good to hear you're back on a more even keel. The run/bike sounds great!

Frozen grapes - I'd forgotten about those, they're nice esp in summer. You can't wolf them down as fast as you can unfrozen grapes (well, I can't) so a small bowl lasts longer.

Laska42 · 21/04/2015 21:19

elsa just that green or red grapes washed taken off the stalk and frozen, They dont freeze completely but eat them straight out of the freezer , just count the calories. I have a small bowl with about 20 grapes in... about 70 cals . lovely!!

Frozen fresh ripe pineapple is also good and low calories , (as is frozen sliced (ripe) banana though more calories) .. I find grapes and pineapple kill any Wine urges..Wink

Newbiecrafter · 21/04/2015 21:43

Hmmmm frozen grapes sound yummy!

So day 3 and fast day 2 completed. Totalled 483 cals today so better than sunday. Didn't eat all day, just had a few cups of tea and water and my evening meal, padded out with veg.

I found today much easier than Sunday but just hope I can sleep well.

Are herbal teas allowed on this? I have a box of chamomile and vanilla which is quite yummy but has no calorie info on the box.

Laska42 · 21/04/2015 21:51

Yes herb tea fine, maybe MFP will have calories ? usually (unless have added sugar) they are minimal cals

Newbiecrafter · 21/04/2015 21:52

oooh, excellent. Thanks Laska42. I'll have one and assume ive met my 500 cals. There's no added sugar but they're so yummy they have to have some. thanks for your help.

Newbiecrafter · 21/04/2015 21:53

I meant 'they have to have some calories'. def no sugar in them.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/04/2015 21:54

Herbal teas are definitely allowed - no sugar of course, sweetener if you like it. They're all (that I've come across) negligible calories.

Frozen grapes are a useful thing to remember to do when there's a two-for offer on them in the shops.

Sounds like a good FD, newbie. The chamomile and vanilla sounds like a good bedtime drink. I always save some of my milk allowance for a big mug of decaff tea which sees me through the night nicely.

Elsasalterego · 21/04/2015 22:25

Good tip on the herbal tea... We have tons of the stuff but I never drink it... Padding off to the kitchen to make a cup. We have tons of flavours in a big mix box so will give the camomile and vanilla a try.

Newbiecrafter · 21/04/2015 22:32

thanks Errol, hoping the tea has a good effect.

the tea is made by taylors of Harrogate in conjunction with Kew gardens.

A lovely warm milky drink sounds so comforting. I cant handle dairy though so am currently pretending my tea is a hot choc.

TalkInPeace, that is so inspiring. Thanks for sharing that.

It is so hard to imagine you having been 3 stones heavier.. You look so fit and healthy to me. For someone nearing 50, you look great !

Elsasalterego · 21/04/2015 22:32

2cals for 100ml of the camomile, honey and vanilla.

Elsasalterego · 21/04/2015 22:34

That was from the box- ours are the Twining's ones

ErrolTheDragon · 21/04/2015 22:45

Newbie, if you want hot chocolate but can't do dairy, then sounds like you should try the unsweetened almond milk. Slightly nutty hot chocolate...perhaps need a bit of sweetener if made with cocoa

Newbiecrafter · 21/04/2015 22:45

thanks Elsa. I'll have to remember herbal tea for during the day.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/04/2015 05:40

< woken very early by birds singing / noisily shagging; must close my window ! >

I get punnets of fresh berries, wash and freeze them. Much less sugar and lower GI than grapes, so don't waken hunger. They are yum to nibble as pud, also delic in a smoothie with almond milk, spinach and cinammon

Herbal tea is great with Stevia as sweetener. Negligible cals even if you have several cups.

Laska, great idea about sorting wardrobe on FD Smile. I'll try it!

So yesterday was my first FD in my new effort to get back on track. It went so so. I fasted normally until 6, then I had my (packed) dinner [I was at work, working late as an exception]. It was mainly made up of leftovers, but nutritious enough although a bit too carby. Once I got home (around 8.30) I actually had a second small dinner, again quite carby although not too calorific. But I felt disappointed & obv eating twice wasn't ideal. I just felt very hungry this time after 24hrs fast....

On the plus side, I've made a good plan of what to eat on NFDs and hope next FD (sat) will go a bit better.

hevs10593 · 22/04/2015 06:47

Just marking my place!

Weighed in after a fast day and I'm 1/2 lb down. Not to bad considering the weekend I had!

confusedandemployed · 22/04/2015 06:57

Morning all. I've had a really busy alcohol laden week. Last FD was last Thu, on Sat we had friends over for a bbq (I think I stayed within TDEE), and Sun-yesterday I was away in London. Lots of drinks, lots of lovely food - my friend organised a surprise London hen for me ahead of getting married in a few weeks.
Today I am on a FD and tbh I'm looking to it. I need to clear out my body! Planning water all day, hardboiled egg when I get home and a chicken/veg stew thing later on.

stilllovingmysleep · 22/04/2015 08:05

Hevs, that's great. Way to go.

confusedandemployed, glad to hear you enjoyed the week despite having a bit too much to eat.

Meerka · 22/04/2015 08:10

I drink herbal teas by the bucketload too, i like liquorice and also star anise a lot. Comforting and refreshing at the same time.

For absolutely no understandable reason my weight has dropped back down to 67.8 kilos. I've been trying to 16:8 and trying (and failing) to keep to 1000 cals and to snack as little as possible, and only on healthy stuff. But even so, I'm surprised. Unless it's muscle loss ... can really feel the effects of not having gone ot the gym for 2 weeks. Does muscle loss kick in that fast?

But Im trying to pat myself on the back for making 36 little mars-bars racecars with smartie-wheels and jellybear drivers for the childrens partybags and only taking one 1/10 of one small mars bar ...

I reckon by the time 5:2's have reached their ideal weight, they'll have willpower of iron.

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 22/04/2015 09:08

Checking in, NFD today, I've changed my FD to Thursday, see if it makes the weekend any less damaging...thanks erroll and great NSV by the way, can't wait to get to that point where I'm told not to loose anymore weight Grin

Thanks for the tip on the frozen grapes laska I love grapes, although I know they're quiet high in sugar....hopefully that might make me eat a few less and anything that keeps me away from the Wine is always worth a try!!

Well done hevs on the weight loss, and congrats in advance of your nuptials confused hope you have a lovely day.....

meerka your Mars bar race cars sound lovely, well done on iron willpower!

Right best go and do something.....spent a lot of yterday on the trampoline with dd3 (she's just discovered the joys of it) I'm hoping it has some exercise benefits for me too???

Meerka · 22/04/2015 09:15

Trampolining is really good I believe! (friend was professional trampolinist and circus acrobat and he raves about it, though he is biased :D)

Ahem, when I've tried it I've had trouble with my pelvic floor ... got any tips?!
