Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

5:2 Thread number 51: Whoever said "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" obviously never tasted ice cream or chocolate ! 5:2 is for those who enjoy good food and don't want to diet every damn day

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
==================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLomgo , and a LongoInterview

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

That's a great start with your FDs and the exercise, Gunnels

Well done, mildly (and MrMildly, who sounds a lovely bloke)
Resistance training can improve your shape & health considerably even when the scales don't change much: This is because your body composition changes, with lower % body fat.

Hevs Just try to stay well within TDEE and 8-hr window today, then really plan your FD tomorrow: most folk would find an FD very tough after a mini-FD.

He is by no means MiniTiP - a large lary rugby playing lump more like - hugging him is like hugging a wall.
If only I could get him to cut down on sugar, but he's still growing

Calico
I love wine - I drink far more than I should, but have now sussed it down to - evenings only and only two days a week unless its a special occasion and then I still try to reduce intake.
Does not always work but my tolerance has dropped too.

Your liver will thank you for it, as well as your waist.

Flugdrachen · 02/04/2015 16:52

I'm a wine lover too! That's largely why I try to ADF ... I'm pretty strict about only drinking twice a week & staying well below the limits but I want to be able to have a second glass (or a margarita!).

Well done on the prefecture TiP Grin

It's been an odd week here - we had a lot of socialising & I've had a huge work deadline (dh has been in charge of food!). It ended up with Friday 1500, Sat 1300, Sun 1100, Monday I fasted (400), Tuesday was a disaster (2000, but tasty!), I fasted yesterday (200) & today (200).

Tomorrow is my dad's 60th birthday party & I'm taking dd1 out for lunch on Wednesday ... I'm going to attempt to get back to proper ADF from Saturday. I want to be quite strict from now until mid May when we have another batch of parties etc

CheshireSplat · 02/04/2015 17:47

Hi all

Even tho I'm on mat leave I've got that double bank holiday feeling! Yippee! GrinAnd we're off to a friend's wedding. Double yippee! GrinGrin

Had a SV this morning. Grin I'm delighted! 11 stone 1. All of March I bobbed between 11 3 and 11 5 (too many holidays). My "normal" weight is between 10 10 and 10 13 so I'm nearly there. Then I'm gonna carry on by and get to my lowest adult weight. I got to 10 3 for my wedding (or my dress wouldn't have done up!) but starved myself for that. I think 10 stone may be achievable on 5:2.

Just to say for those of you stalling and being a but disheartened, I started at new year and have "only" lost 12 lbs since then, in 3 months. So 4 lbs a month. But that is 12 lb I might not have lost had I done nothing.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2015 19:25

That's great, Cheshire 11 stone is a motivating SV, on your way to 10 stone. Enjoy the wedding.
Smile
Weight loss is not a race, folks, and your body is unique, so it gets there at its own pace, without starving.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2015 19:26

1lb per week is average if you don't have a few stone to lose

OP posts:
CheshireSplat · 02/04/2015 19:57

Thanks Big Choc. I know it's been said so many times but this does seem sustainable.

TIP, my 3 year old was munching whole raw carrots yesterday. She wouldn't have them chopped up as she wanted to be like me!!! Good habits. I had a whole raw parsnip and it was a NFD!

Settling down with a glass or two of Riesling for the leadership debate. Excited!

squigglehead · 02/04/2015 20:01

Today has been a tasty disaster. Plan to be good all weekend though :)

mrswhiskers · 02/04/2015 20:07

Another successful FD. it really does get easier. Does anyone know if the reason it gets easier is physical or psychological?

CheshireSplat · 02/04/2015 20:14

Good question Mrs. I think its physical but have no real idea.

CarbeDiem · 02/04/2015 20:17

Evening all, hope you're all well.
Well done to the losers, the faster's and welcome to any newcomers I've missed.

I've been doing well, sticking with my 21:3. Well apart from 3 days ago when I decided to join Dh in his monthly break from 'wheat free' he's allergic but misses some things. He ordered Pizza - I had 2 slices and quickly wished I hadn't - my poor poor bloated tummy, within 1 hour I'd ballooned up :(
I wish I could bottle the feeling of what wheat does to me so I'd remember next time before eating any - I'm thinking about getting one of those tests done, I think I'm intolerant not allergic as I don't react in the same way Dh does but everyones' different I suppose.
Good news, I've lost even more cms and my weight is at 80 kilos now. I had to check 3 times that my flintstone scales weren't lying. I can actually feel it now - my bum isn't bouncing as much :)

Hope everyone has a lovely Easter. Xx

TalkinPeace · 02/04/2015 21:18

Cheshire
I am utterly delighted that carrots are a snack of choice : that is setting your DD up to never having to diet

Mrswhiskers
Does anyone know if the reason it gets easier is physical or psychological?
Both. There are several feedback looks in your physiology and neurology.
Once your stomach gets into the habit of digesting fully, and your brain realises you won't faint after an hour
then the clarity of mind that being fasted becomes quite pleasurable.

DH and I went to Waitrose today, mid fast, and bought the bits for pizza - that we will eat tomorrow as tonight was soup.
It really does get easy.

mrswhiskers · 02/04/2015 21:29

That is interesting tip
this is only my third week of 5:2 so I didn't expect the fasting to be so easy so soon although in the past (pre weight gain) I used to go for long periods without eating to no ill effect and I never remember feeling hungry. when I started eating regular meals, I felt hungry all the time and gained weight. I'm only beginning to see that connection now.

CheshireSplat · 02/04/2015 21:33

Ah TiP. That's almost brought a tear to my eye! What a gift that would be to a daughter. [pulls self together]

BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2015 21:37

Getting used to fasting is partly phychological and partly physiological - you need to emotionally accept that hunger isn't harmful for less than a day; your body needs to adapt and burn fat for fuel.
For most folk, this process takes 2-3 weeks. However, I took several months to come down to 500 cals Blush maybe because I burn so much training and I didn't have that much body fat readily available as fuel.

Well done on your SV and inches, Carbe
Sorry to hear about your tums; sounds like both of you really should avoid wheat - there are many other grains, so you are not cutting out a whole food group.
You should be ok with oats, barley, brown rice but I'd avoid any kind of bran until you have had proper tests - high fibre can be a problem with IBS / coeliac temdencies.
I suggest you stick a GF pizza in the freezer ready for the next time - can't be more expensive than ordering one.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2015 21:39

A wonderful side effect if 5:2er kids are snacking on carrots and veg. Win-win
Smile

OP posts:
CarbeDiem · 03/04/2015 10:03

Thanks Bigchoc - 90% of the time we use rye, rice, oat or ground buckwheat flour for baking. It's Dh's fault for the monthly cheat :) - he misses 'real' pizza (and other stuff) so much.
We both have a few spoons of flax seeds daily for fibre and stay away from bran. It was only when Dh was diagnosed and wheat wasn't an option that I actually realised what it was doing to me. I never learn though.

mildlyacquiescent · 03/04/2015 10:25

Sadly, my kid still refuses to eat much besides fish fingers. Carrots would be great... I'm in awe. Grin

Carbe, I get it. Sometimes the substitutes just don't cut it, do they?

mootime · 03/04/2015 10:39

Morning all.

Note to self about 5:2. It is never going to be a good idea to break a fast by drinking more wine than you have in 10years....

I feel terribleHmm
But it was fun at the time!Grin

TalkinPeace · 03/04/2015 10:48

mildly
getting kids to eat raw carrot : make it fun.
Peel the carrot and then slice into rings.
Now pop the middles out (and eat them) then see how many rings they can fit on each finger - and then eat them off

cue hours of amusement and a healthy snack

similar game with pitted olives : can they get olives onto all ten digits and then eat them off without dropping any?

fishfingers : a deeply epic family member we met for lunch has persuaded her 3 and 1 year olds that whitebait are special restaurant fish fingers - watching the one year old scoffing them coated in tartare sauce fish finger mayo was splendid

mootime
BETTER NOT SHOUT AT YOU THEN Wink

CarbeDiem · 03/04/2015 11:29

Mildly - Nah! not at all. Not often, but sometimes, I'd be happy to swap a kidney for a fresh baked white WHEATY bun with salty butter :) (apologies to any fasters today that I may be winding up)

Dh has it worse than me so I shouldn't complain - if he eats too much he reacts with hives and something similar to psoriasis on his head - poor sod's also allergic to yeast and eggs but not on the same level as wheat. It's a PITbloodyA sometimes.

Oops! Moo :) :) Move on, it was just a mistake. I mean this kindly - I hope that the hangover is enough to put you off doing it again.

Someone does not want me to go to the gym this week! Wednesday and Thursday I had to cancel my classes for unforeseen circumstances then this morning on my way to spin my car broke down in the middle of a busy roundabout. I stood In the cold on a FD for over an hour and the whole time I could see the gym from where I was stood! Safe to say I missed my spin class ..
