Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

5:2 Thread number 51: Whoever said "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" obviously never tasted ice cream or chocolate ! 5:2 is for those who enjoy good food and don't want to diet every damn day

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
==================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLomgo , and a LongoInterview

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Finished my fast day on 501 calories. Nervous wreck; not sure if work will give me time off on Sunday morning to watch the cricket World Cup final; will go to bed to stop hitting the carbs to calm down.

Night all. x (Tis 10pm, not 7pm, where I am)

hevs10593 · 24/03/2015 19:15

2nd fast done sucessfully today. Just eaten my first meal of the day after the gym. I can't get over how easy it is to fast! I'm so surprised just makes me think how psychological hunger really is.

mrswhiskers · 24/03/2015 20:26

fast day over and kitchen closed for the evening.
I'm starting to think that in some ways it's easier on a fasting day as I don't have to worry about how much I'm eating and what to eat when. I know I've got one meal and that's it so I just get on with the rest of my day.
Trying to save some calories on NF days this week as I am going out to a buffet restaurant this weekend so it's going to be tricky for me to log my calories on mfp.

MeerkaRIPSirTerry · 24/03/2015 21:10

nearly over tonight ...

Elsasalterego · 24/03/2015 21:49

I managed to stay away from the peanut butter and the bread so the FD has stayed on track for me, a dinner of 280 cals then some fruit and fibre before bed (can't sleep without cereal!)

I have spent the last 40 mins looking through all the posts I have missed simce Thursday - this thread just quizzes by! But it's so inspirational and always helps me through the difficult times when I feel like cheating.

Squiggle I saw your post about stopping periods last time you tried 5:2. As was pointed out there won't be any 5:2 evidence, just anecdotal, but I thought it might help to hear that when I was age 30-31 I lost a great deal of weight quite quickly due to overtraining and catching glandular fever at the same time. Even though I was still well within healthy bmi. I stopped my periods which at the time worried me, but I had literally only just met my DH so it wasn't a pressing issue, just something I was worried about in terms of my future fertility. And they did return after about 4months. Anyway just thought you might like to hear this as when I did TTC I fell pregnant immediately with both of my DCs so it certainly didn't affect my fertility whatsoever.

Elsasalterego · 24/03/2015 21:52

Damnit, not squiggle, it was stripeytees - sorry!!!

Elsasalterego · 24/03/2015 21:59

Ooh Silent I think you're onto something there! They work out the calorie content by burning a substance in oxygen and seeing how much heat is given off- but if we don't digest it then I reckon you're right that we don't get the calories.

vvviola · 24/03/2015 22:25

mildly are you in NZ?? In that case I'm pretty sure not a lot of work will get done anywhere, so I'm sure you can sneak a peek.

If not you could always do what I was doing this morning and keep pressing refresh on the BBC live text commentary.

My Kiwi DH is already getting stressed...

BigChocFrenzy · 24/03/2015 22:46

Mazzle Sorry to hear about your serious family illnesses. You've had a tough time, so it's understandable you couldn't fast during that time.
Welcome back to fasting today.

You've learned the knack of fasting very quickly, hev even fasted training too.

Well done all Tuesday fasters, good job.

calorie count - corn and all other food:
when calories are calculated, this DOES take into account undigestable fibre.
btw, I've never examined my poop to check for corn (!) but are you chewing your food sufficiently or like a Labrador ?

stripytees · 25/03/2015 07:51

Thanks Elsa, it is useful to hear.

It's a FD for me today. Trying something different today and only having a cup of tea with semi skim milk for breakfast and saving most of the calories for an early dinner at about 5pm or whenever I feel I need it. I never skip breakfast so this is a bit of an experiment.

Happy FD to all of you fasting today! Smile

Berrie · 25/03/2015 08:02

Hello!
I am into my fourth week now. I have lost 8lb but the majority of that was during the first two weeks. Would adding a third fast day result in a greater loss this week or is it likely to tip me over the edge and make me give up? I gave up after a similar weight loss and timescale last year the week I put on 2 lb! Grin

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 25/03/2015 08:25

Morning all, 2nd FD of the week....and it's a lovely sunny day....so lots of cleaning ahead Grin....stripy I started a few weeks ago by cutting out lunch and keeping my cals for dinner (save a few for tea morn & lunch time) and I find it so much easier and I have a lovely dinner with some desert (fruit & yogurt)...good luck with it today....

CarbeDiem · 25/03/2015 08:56

Morning all.
Welcome to newcomers, well done to losers and fasters and I hope people who are ill make speedy recoveries.
Mazzle That's awful - I hope your relative recovers quickly.

Berrie Well done on your loss - don't give up. Try throwing in another FD and see what happens? **disclaimer - I'm NO expert here.
I kind of fast every day - It's the 16:8 but I do it something like 21:3 - Sometimes what I eat is under 500 calories and sometimes it's not but I cut all rubbish and eat 99% healthy (unless fat feeding MIL is visiting). Granted, I didn't actually choose to do this originally (twas stress) but it's comfortable and easy so I continued and I've lost around half a stone plus lots of cms since mid feb.

Feeling nervous, sick and scared this morning - Mums results are in - appt is at 10am. Mum is doing so well after her op - we're collectively hoping that all that's needed is a little radiotherapy to blitz any tumour cells left and regular check ups. Please God!

Dotty342kids · 25/03/2015 09:17

Welcome back Mazzle and sorry to hear about what's been going on for you. Hopefully you're now in for a period of calm when you can refocus on yourself and your health!

BigChoc you really made me laugh with your question about whether or not people are "eating like a Labrador"!

Berrie don't throw in the towel. With any change to our eating habits there's a first flush of excitement, enthusiasm and results. The good thing about 5:2 is that it is sustainable and makes us feel good in all sorts of ways, not just reflected in the scales. How are you finding it generally? If you've noticed other side effects such as inch loss or increased energy then focus on enjoying those for a couple of weeks and stay away from the scales. By the time you get back on them, you will have lost those 2lbs again, and hopefully more Smile

Carbe, fingers crossed for your Mum.

wecantallbeperfect · 25/03/2015 09:33

Bigchoc I eat like a Labrador now you mention itBlush . I'm going to make a conscious effort to really take my time eating from now on. Funnily enough years ago when I was slim I was always the last to finish when eating with others. will let you all know how my PT session goes this evening. FD today and abnormally I am feeling hungry Sad

EauRouge · 25/03/2015 09:35

Hello all, I'm a newbie. I did lose 10lbs by calorie counting last year but then I got injured (so no running) and had some other health problems which led me to eating a lot of crap (DH kept buying me cheesecake to cheer me up, how dare he ).

Anyway, I thought I'd give 5:2 a go because it sounds fairly simple. I'd like to lose those 10lbs again and then see how I look- I don't want to look gaunt or anything but it'd be nice if my thighs didn't rub together.

Thanks for all the info in the OP :)

mrswhiskers · 25/03/2015 09:47

Good morning all.
NFD here and have just finished day 1 of week 1 C25K. fasted yesterday and still haven't broken my fast today yet I think I have more energy than usual do others find this when exercising during and after a fast?
carbe hope all goes well with your mum.
hope all fasters and non-fasters have a good day. Smile

vvviola · 25/03/2015 09:58

FD here. Although I ssuspect I'm about to get an earful from my new boss about a mistake I made, in which case FD may have to be abandoned (I find I'm a lot more sensitive on a FD, so I may have to abandon it if this issue goes up to the big boss, so I can stay professional)

CarbeDiem · 25/03/2015 10:03

Thanks guys Flowers
Desperately trying to distract myself right now until my sister calls with THE news.

Dotty342kids · 25/03/2015 10:14

Welcome to you EauRouge sounds like you're already quite a healthy soul so am sure you'll settle in with 5:2 and lose those 10lbs. Your DH sounds fab btw Grin

MrsWhiskers I normally exercise in the mornings and on a FD I really find it helps to stave off the hunger pangs. If I don't exercise, the morning drags on forever!!

Elsasalterego · 25/03/2015 10:27

Carbe thinking of you.

Still full of cold so 'working from home' today. NFD and allowing myself to eat what I want. That was a peanut butter sandwich as I couldn't get it out of my head after having seen the kids eat them yesterday!

Gonna have a hot bath and think about doing some work afterwards. My DM is coming over later to look after the kids as I have a work thing on this evening (which I am going to keep mega-short and hopefully be home by 8). Having her here is a big treat for me as she lives 2 hrs away.

CarbeDiem · 25/03/2015 10:44

Thanks Elsa
Arghh!! My anxiety is through the roof right now, heart is racing and I can't calm it down. Dh just asked if I want a vodka (vomits) It's so hard being so far away :( but I'd be the same even if I was physically there.
Come on God damn it, appt be finished.
