Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start
. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

Other Links and Science
BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This health blog Interview with a leading scientist gives some of the scientific explanation for why fasting helps you to lose weight AND maybe improve your health too.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese people (men & women), wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle or water, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across [[http://www.paleoforwomen.com/
shattering-the-myth-of-fasting-for-women-a-review-of-female-specific-responses-to-fasting-in-the-literature/ this article]] which is very negative about fasting for women with normal BMI.

Here’s our response:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8,
combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) like LeanGains AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing
  • They were often doing zero-calorie fasting, to rush weight loss, instead of having 500 cals.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

These Pictures illustrate that many different body shapes & types that are healthy, so there is no single "right" shape.

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Thanks for all your lovely welcome's and welcome backs :-) Nice to still see some regulars here B&W, TiP and BCF and hello to all the new folks [waves]

BCF the plumbing issue sounds like an absolute nightmare - do you have the flooding and cleanup under control now?

Sorry - I'm on my phone, will try to reply to people properly when I get to my laptop!

livefastlove · 13/02/2015 09:22

Well done on your losses pot and mrs its great to be moving down and well under the 13 stone 3 I started at, now 12s8.6. Lets see how I get on over this thread.

plus3 · 13/02/2015 09:28

Morning - when do you all weigh yourselves and then record it?

I have weighed myself this morning and am 11st 11lbs (after a FD yesterday) I tend to record a weekly weight on Monday, which is after 3 days of NFD. My FDs are Tuesday & Thursday.

igivein · 13/02/2015 09:35

Morning All
Weigh-in day for me:
Week six, 2lbs loss, 22lbs overall.
I'm loving the weight loss and can really see me sticking with this WOE, I think I've finally found something that can work for me longterm!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2015 10:18

Remembered to weigh (my standard time, morning after 2nd FD). 57.7 kg which means I'm gradually heading in the right direction again after xmas excesses.

MrS , I gave up on my pre-preg jeans lurking in the spare wardrobe a couple of years ago... then started 5:2 and so I've had to buy new ones.

BC I keep meaning to try a hot choc made with some of that Choc shots syrup, maybe a bit of extra cocoa and almond milk - the Alpro unsweetened is only 13 cals per 100 mls (it has 26 writ large on the pack but that's the 200 ml serving count).

TalkinPeace · 13/02/2015 13:20

Weighed my self this morning. Exactly the same weight as last week.
Which is interesting because I have spectacularly failed to fast this week (my two fast day suppers ended up being lamb curry with bucket load of naan and then toad in the hole)
BUT
I've had no alcohol
so have saved well over 1000 calories that way.

Dotty342kids · 13/02/2015 13:30

mrssteven, potbelly, Igivein and livefast excellent losses - well done to all of you Grin

plus3 I have to confess that I hop on the scales every day. However I only "count" the weigh in that I do after the second FD of the week - which is either a Thursday or Friday

potbellyroast · 13/02/2015 14:33

plus3 i also hop on the scales twice a day every day. I count any weigh in that produces a loss, whenever that might be, but ignore any gain Grin

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 13/02/2015 15:01

Thanks all for the support, Well done pot on your weight loss too, and for standing strong in the face of buns & cakes, that is real willpower Wink

igiven that is fantastic, 22lbs in 6 weeks, livefast well done to you too! it's a real spirit lift reading about all your losses, I need to print this out and stick it somewhere to have to read when I'm on a wobbler...

errol & TIP & dotty cheers for keeping moral up, it really does help to know that someday soon we will all be there maintaining and fitting into those nice clothes that are lurking I our wardrobes Smile

livefastlove · 13/02/2015 16:35

Yay glad you all had losses too!
pot have you ever read the late Michael Winner's Fat Pig Diet? He always recorded his weight morning and night saying he might as well be honest that he weighed himself that often.

TalkinPeace · 13/02/2015 17:27

MrsSteven
The unusual thing about 5:2 is that no matter how young / old / fat / thin / tall / short / toned / relaxed you are
on a fast day you are eating 500 calories
just the same as everybody else
so we are all in the same place at 4pm on a fast day!

That is why its so good long term : the eating habits you are learning now will be the ones that will keep you at happy weight for the rest of your life.

potbellyroast · 13/02/2015 18:24

livefastloveno never seen that but it sounds about right Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 13/02/2015 18:52

22lb in 6 weeks is fantastic, igivein
Well done on your SVs too, Livefast, MrsSteven, Pot
Great work,everyone.

Did you fast today, Boleh or are you starting Monday ?
Hang on Friday fasters, not long to go.

OP posts:
Trenzalor · 13/02/2015 19:12

The teeth are brushed and the kitchen is closed. 500 calorie fast day complete.
My digestive system has shown its pleasure at my fast with its usual colon clean out.
It's so much easier fasting on a work day!
MrsSteven I am also two stone lighter than pre pregnancy weight with two more to go
Erroll choc shot makes a lovely hot choc. I use rice coconut milk.

livefastlove · 13/02/2015 22:22

Yum had my take away I was saving calories for and it was lovely. I didnt eat much else though. I had a slice of bread this morning and some maltesers so I actually came in just over my TDEE which is great. Have another feasting day planned for tomorrow as we will go out to eat and maybe a few valentines chocolates. Talking of valentine presents, that book I mentioned The Fat Pigs Diet was DHs rather insensitive gift to me one year! I did say I wanted it though (not necessarily for Valentines ) and tbf I really enjoyed reading it so I didn't have to LTB.

PUGaLUGS · 13/02/2015 22:49

Hello.

Did a FD yesterday.

Finished work now for half term so will probably change my FD next week (usually do Sun and Thur) and have both in the week.

Am aiming to hit the gym more too.

This week have been giving the dog (who needs to lose a bit of weight) an extra walk during the day. Have been using the RunKeeper app. It's surprising how many cals can be burned just walking the dog Grin

pregnantpause · 14/02/2015 09:03

Yesterday was a heavy feast day here- KFC lunch and later a butter chicken curry, with a bottle of wine ShockBlush BUT I was within my tdee. Not snacking leaves for so much at meal times, I really think it's snacking that's made me so big over the years.

I also bought a scale this morning- I'm 13.10, which is a pound up from my last weigh in the summer. I must have been so much heavier than I estimated when I started this diet as I know I've lost- you can see it, I look slimmer- people have commented! At least now I can start weighing myself and properly record my losses.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/02/2015 10:07

Well done on your FD, pug and the dog-walking. Excellent for you both, out in the fresh air too.

pregantpause That's an NSV if people have noticed you've lost weight.
Yes, without scales or measuring, one tends to seriously underestimate gain over so many months. You are on the right track now.
If you have any clothes that were tight when you started, you can see if they fit better now.

OP posts:
Dotty342kids · 14/02/2015 12:07

pregnantpause, well done for investing in some new scales and sharing your results with us Smile. As you say, now you now exactly what you are and can track properly. I bought some new ones a few weeks ago too and love seeing the body fat gradually reduce, as well as the weight!
I'm similar in that snacks can be my downfall. So I'm having (on a NFD) a small bag of crisps, and some fruit with my lunch, not as separate snacks, to train myself out of that habit.

I have to confess that last night I was very tired and headachy and did not have the strength to resist the huge bar of Dairy Milk that DH appeared with. However, I left it in the kitchen so that it actually took effort to go and get some, rather than having it next to me and mindlessly eating the lot Grin. I'm pleased to say that even with that, I was only about 160 cals over my sendentary TDEE (bear in mind that's my aim TDEE, but I allow myself up to a lightly active TDEE if I need to - so would have been within that) AND, there is still chocolate left over. That's a minor miracle!

Today have just mfp'd the meals we have planned in and there are enough cals left to have some more tonight if I fancy it. So that's good to know. Although am trying to have a few days under my TDEE so that I can happily eat next week whilst away for a couple of days.

Have a good weekend everyone and I'll check back in on Monday for a FD.

TalkinPeace · 14/02/2015 12:31

Not snacking leaves for so much at meal times, I really think it's snacking that's made me so big over the years.

YES, YES, YES

Snack foods are almost universally full of crap and constantly eating is not good for you

Once people get back to a couple of meals a day, healthy happy weights follow along.

livefastlove · 14/02/2015 18:03

Well today has certainly been a feast day and I used quite a few of the calories I saved earlier in the week. I may still have a couple of chocolates, but not too bad as I didnt eat too much yesterday in the end. I am looking forward to the rest of the week in terms of being on holiday so I hope I will do OK with my eating. Now is the ideal time to look at cookery programmes as I am not at all hungry so I will watch a couple I recorded.

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 14/02/2015 18:34

Crikey, this thread moves fast. I have not checked in for a few days so I missed the end of the last thread.
Well I am nearing the end of my 6th week of this WOE and it's all going pretty good. I have lost 1 stone and 3 inches of my waist. More importantly I am finding it relatively easy to stick to (I have never stuck to diet this long before). I have got into a rhythm with my 3 FD's a week. On Friday I had my first FD when I wasn't working (although I had had FD's when I was at home I was working) and I actually didn't realise till about 4pm.
My next goal is to up my activity levels and initially I am going to aim for 5 hours walking per week.
Hope you are all having a good weekend.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/02/2015 19:07

That's an excellent SV and inch loss, Twilight Just keep going and you'll reach your goal shape and weight.
