Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start
. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

Other Links and Science
BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This health blog Interview with a leading scientist gives some of the scientific explanation for why fasting helps you to lose weight AND maybe improve your health too.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese people (men & women), wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle or water, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

More science: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across [[http://www.paleoforwomen.com/
shattering-the-myth-of-fasting-for-women-a-review-of-female-specific-responses-to-fasting-in-the-literature/ this article]] which is very negative about fasting for women with normal BMI.

Here’s our response:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8,
combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) like LeanGains AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing
  • They were often doing zero-calorie fasting, to rush weight loss, instead of having 500 cals.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

These Pictures illustrate that many different body shapes & types that are healthy, so there is no single "right" shape.

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Just about to leave work, so that's it a total of 1174 calories for today plus the birthday cake. Lunch was left over spaghetti bolognese so I just estimated a figure for that, hopefully not too far out.

Off to class in a couple of hours, building up towards grading on March 25th so should be good for working off any overage on calories though, as recommended on this thread, I'm trying not to eat back exercise calories.

Good night all, hope today has gone well for fasters and non-fasters alike.

pregnantpause · 09/03/2015 17:51

Stomach bugs galore hereConfused. Just checking in so thread stays on my list. Well done all

Bimblepops · 09/03/2015 18:33

Hope you're all better soon, Pregnant.

Kitchen is closed, we've all just had sea bream and veg, with roast Charlotte potatoes for the rest of the family. 4/5 of my plate was veg. Delicious! Had a little wobble just beforehand and resorted to nibbling on a few nuts.

Will go and do my teeth shortly and then off to bed early.

Hope everyone else has had a successful day!

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2015 19:22

Well done, Bimble I adore fish, with grilled veg or salad.

Poor you, pregnantpause I hope you all soon recover.
IMPORTANT: after a stomach bug, leave at least a week after the end of all symptoms before you fast. Otherwise, your stomach may play up again.

For that week's pause, do daily 16:8 if possible, eating nutritious food within TDEE. Try to avoid junk and alcohol, so your system can concentrate on recovery.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2015 19:24

Well done, Zalen That's right, try to eat just sedentary TDEE on NFDs and never eat back exercise calories on FDs.
Your grading sounds exciting; best of luck and do let us know how that goes.

Just checking in to say hello and I'm still here. Been a busy few weeks so been keeping up with the thread as best I can. Well done to all Monday fasters. FD for me today. Kitchen closed and resisting the beer DS1, DH and DB are drinking watching the footie. Think I'll need to go to bed to stay out of temptations way.

TalkinPeace · 09/03/2015 20:56

Another good fast day in the TiP house : DH did his first fasting while working day he's very active and has to talk a lot so he'd been wary but it went fine
and then chicken stir fry with huge piles of veg and then lots of noodles for DS, quite a few noodles for DD, a few for DH and a scattering for me - the same meal varying between 1200 and 500 calories Smile

pregnantpause · 09/03/2015 21:29

Thanks all. I've been logging and will keep that up- who knew a pack of super noodles is so calorific?! It's my go to sickness food, along with bachelors pasta n sauce - another calorie bomb! It's not stopped me eating them, as they're bland carb fests that are not horrific to come back up ( sorry tmi) but I have logged it on mfp and will not buy any more when stocks run out. grannygrotts · 09/03/2015 21:32

For a FD it was a very slow day for me as I was sat at a desk with virtually no work to do all da; the offices are open plan so I also had to put up with people eating their very delicious-smelling early and late lunches; and someone brought in two HUGE cakes from Paul's patisserie with the most gorgeous smelling strawberries ever wafting constantly over my desk.

Struggled home on the tube with my new hand weights (1kg, 2kg and 3kg) feeling very sorry for myself, quick cup of coffee, and did day 3 of level 1 shred, after which I felt very tired, but with considerably improved mood. Stir fry for me too, huge pile of veg with chicken, no noodles.

Not quite 9.30 and I am ready for bed. Totally unheard of for me.

Wishing everyone on FDs tomorrow an uneventful day. Hope you feel better soon Pregnant been some nasty bugs around this year.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/03/2015 22:06

Well done granny! Lugging a set of weights on the tube sounds like no fun at all so you did well to use them when you got home.

Normal sort of fd for me - think I shall get my bedtime decaf tea and turn on soon myself.

LucyBorgia · 09/03/2015 22:43

Hi, shyly coming out of the lurky shadows as you all seem so nice and not at all scary. I've been doing 5:2 since beginning of January and learning loads since then from you all. I started at 10 st 10lb and am now down to 9:10 although that has been fairly static for two weeks now give or take a pound or two. I am also shredding since then although am only on level 3 day 5 so that will tell you it hasn't been every day. I have had a hefty circuit training class on the go every week for the last month though.
My body shape has changed completely and I am discovering muscles I never knew existed before. (Not to mention my huge boobs deflating) I'm trying to be sensible about the stubborn bloody scales as my clothes tell me I've changed. My husband has been doing all this with me and lost two stone and is still losing(smug git) although he was bigger to start with.
I'm loving the exercise and have been wandering over to gasp at Big Chocs exercise thread.....I had thought I was doing well with the shred but there's a long way to go reading that!
Had a good fast day today and discovered the delights of courgetti which I thought I couldn't do properly without a spiraliser but I dug out my mandolin and it did a great job. Now throwing out the zero noodles.....

ErrolTheDragon · 09/03/2015 22:50

Welcome Lucy - sounds like you've been doing great so far!Smile

HandMini · 10/03/2015 07:38

Morning all. It's a FD for me. Anyone else joining in? Grab your mug of herbal Brew!

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 10/03/2015 09:06

NFD here, had a successful FD yterday, NFDs are definitely worse for me (still) think I will try and stick to doing 3 a week for another while, have to stay in the 'zone' of its a non fast day NOT a binge day! Good luck with your fasts today everyone....one other benefit from doing IF I have noticed, my house is cleaner than ever, distraction by cleaning!!! Better than Slimming World & Weight Watchers combined!! Grin

chevronstripes · 10/03/2015 09:18

Morning all and welcome Lucy.

Thanks to everyone for all the carb tips - my plan for this week is to cook the carbs separately so the kids can have more and I can have less plus try a few more wholegrain swaps. I've found some spelt pasta that we all like so that's a start.

Good scales news today another 2lb down. This is the start of week 6 for me and I'm 12 lbs down. Still a looongg way to go but feeling positive on this sunny morning Smile

wecantallbeperfect · 10/03/2015 09:25

FD for me today, had my first 'proper' meal last night for a good few days, so feeling really stuffed this morning. Good luck to everyone fasting today.Smile

Zalen · 10/03/2015 10:06

Thanks BigChoc, grading is both exciting and terrifying, it's for my cycle belt, last belt before black and so I'm incredibly nervous and I still have 15 days to go, I'll be a complete wreck by the actual day.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2015 10:09

Welcome, Lucy No need to be shy.
Smile
Well done on your new body shape and your SV.
You've burnt fat and built muscle, so your body may need a little time to get used to those major changes - that's probably why the scales are not moving atm. Be patient and you'll come through this temporary plateau.

Hello all
Am properly back and firing on all cylinders after a good 10 days or so of being wiped out by this pesky virus I've had.
FD yesterday as was either on the motorway or in meetings, and another one planned in for tomorrow.
tip good to hear that your husband is doing well!

chevron, good result for you there, well done Smile

dwinnol · 10/03/2015 12:55

Hello all
You are all doing so well. I've still not found the courage to weigh but I have stuck to it (on day 9 today) and I definitely feel better and my stomach has gone down to the point I can suck it in a bit.
I'm on my second FD today and really hungry right now. Yesterday I was doing my self employed thing and I'm busy with my hands all day so I don't notice being hungry but today I'm in my job and its really quiet, all I can think about is food.

HandMini · 10/03/2015 12:59

dwinnol - stay strong! Have a cup of herbal/Bouillon. Think how clean and controlled you feel when not eating on a FD.

zzidyme · 10/03/2015 13:44

Thanks for the welcome. Fast day yesterday went okay. Tea and bovril during the day. Felt hungry after work, but did a brisk walk for 30 mins and it went away! Had squash soup and a 2 egg omlette with mushrooms and toms for my meal of the day. felt satisfied, but woke up during the night hungry and with a headache. Planned a huge breakfast, but not keen this morning. This is working for me! Smile

Meerka · 10/03/2015 13:47

the fever is finally going away though i'm extra tired. Tried a diet day but had to give it up, feeling extra wobbly which went away once I'd eaten. Does anyone have an idea how long to give it before it's probably okay to try again? (am thinking 2-3 more days). Want to get on with it, got a compliment today on loosing weight :D

MyWonderfulMimi · 10/03/2015 14:09

Decorating today so that's keeping me away from snacking. Nearly had a meltdown at lunchtime when I logged what I'd eaten for lunch - then realised today is an NFD, so loads more calories availableSmile.

Meerka Give yourself a few more days. Fasting while recovering from being ill is not a good idea. Eat sensibly to TDEE for the next few days and you'll recover quicker.
