Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start
. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

Other Links and Science
BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This health blog Interview with a leading scientist gives some of the scientific explanation for why fasting helps you to lose weight AND maybe improve your health too.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese people (men & women), wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle or water, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

More science: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across [[http://www.paleoforwomen.com/
shattering-the-myth-of-fasting-for-women-a-review-of-female-specific-responses-to-fasting-in-the-literature/ this article]] which is very negative about fasting for women with normal BMI.

Here’s our response:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8,
combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) like LeanGains AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing
  • They were often doing zero-calorie fasting, to rush weight loss, instead of having 500 cals.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

These Pictures illustrate that many different body shapes & types that are healthy, so there is no single "right" shape.

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

PS on BigChoc 's link, I am Eritrean Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 02/03/2015 12:22

Well, I'm below average BMI nationally and globally, and my country match is Cote d'Ivoire. I want to get to be Indonesian. Grin

Dotty342kids · 02/03/2015 12:40

Thanks for the advice and care Bigchoc. I know the class teacher and my fellow classmates well so was able to go and just be a bit pathetic Grin. Probably exercised at about 60% of usual capacity and it was tiring, but then you have to restart somewhere don't you?

igivein · 02/03/2015 13:26

Thanks for your kind words Mrs SPM, Elsa and Dotty, it's made me feel good when I checked in this morning.
FD her for me today, just had peppermint tea and a massive mug of Bovril, as I find it easier not to eat until tea-time.
Went for a swim this morning. There was a lane empty so I got in it. Just as I was setting off a woman came and got in. She looked like a goddess - slim, toned, mid-thirties. However she didn't look pleased to see she was going to have to share a lane with me - fat, wobbly and the wrong side of fifty, swimming granny-style breaststroke. She gave me a long, cold hard stare and waited for me to get to the other end of the pool before she set off.
When I caught her up she looked a bit put out, when I lapped her she looked bemused and when I lapped her for the second time she actually said 'how are you doing that?!'
So I think the exercise must be starting to pay off Grin
Disclaimer: I don't take against people normally for being slim & toned - it was just they way she looked down her nose at me (and she might have helped me swim a bit harder than I otherwise might have done, just to see the look on her face!)

ErrolTheDragon · 02/03/2015 13:37

Grin igivein!

Well done you, and dotty too.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2015 14:35

Interesting to hear what country everyone lands in wrt my BMI link yesterday.
Just for fun I recalculated with Zimbabwe as my country, but my BMI was still lower than the great majority of those my age. I read that the average woman there only survived until age 37, but maybe things have improved dramatically, or the older generation faired better (or Mugabe fiddled the statistics the BBC used)

Well done on your SV, Granny I hope the shrink wash attempts work.
When you get down to goal weight, you could treat yourself to some new outfits. Additional motivation then to maintain.

Glad you are ok, Dotty It’s great you were in such a supportive exercise group.

That’s an NSV, igivein wiping the -–floor-- pool with Ms SnootyPants. Several of us on this thread are now fairly lean and muscular, but I think we are all sufficiently adult to be respectful to other exercisers. Her outlook is unusual and ignorant:

IIRC I watched an overweight woman swimmer winning an Olympic medal. Some of the weightlifters (top weight class) clearly carried quite a lot of extra fat, but nevertheless lifted massive amounts to gain medals.

pregnantpause Although Varady says to do 3 consecutive FDs to break an ADF plateau, I consider that cruel and unusual punishment, not a sustainable WOE.

However, your planned 2 mini_FDs would mean 4 consecutive days sub-1000, also stressful.
I’d suggest a mini-FD on Saturday (only eat supper) and keep Wed and Fri below TDEE. Or just have the 2 FDs this week and do 3 next week.

silly question. On that page that bigchoc linked, I can't actually see the link to the calculator. It metniones the new BBC calculator and that it's an app but no actual link to it. Underneath it gives a few examples of different people.

I'm not in the UK and very occasionally you can't see links that UK people can but before I put it down to that, can anyone tell me if I'm looking at it and simply not seeing it?

OctonautsAgain · 02/03/2015 14:38

FD here too.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to whoever suggested charity shops for interim clothes while losing weight- what a fab idea! Bought some lovely jeans in the next size down (woo hoo) for the princely sum of £2.99 Grin

Also discovered at the weekend that Pizza Hut now do 500 calorie pizzas. They are basically a big crisp and not even a 100th as nice as a full fat deep pan supreme (sob) but you can at least feel like you're trying!

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2015 15:05

Meerka I didn't try the App. I just went in the normal browser.
This screenshot shows what I see, with a red rectangle I put around the calculator. You fill in the info and then press GO.

Hello there, I have been watching these threads for a while and have finally bitten the bullet and begun 5:2 in earnest! I played around with it last year but feel my head is really in the right place now.

I have 2 questions for you wise and informative folk...

  1. Can I have weak no added sugar squash as well as plain water on a fast day as I find water quite dull to drink and don't drink enough?
  1. Is it ok to skip breakfast every day, even on NFDs as I find I can cope fine without. and to be honest, eating first thing names me hungry and prone to grazing and I am stopping snacking as much as possible.

TIA, I seem to have written an epic first post...

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2015 15:15

Octo I HATE stodgy greasy deep pan; it sits in my tum like a stone (I tried it as an emergency supper during my recent burst pipes)
I adore the French/ German tarte flambée which is paper-thin, spread with créme fraiche - better than tomato to avoid a soggy base - and toppings, then baked in a wood-fire oven.

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 02/03/2015 15:22

MrsHR - Welcome, yes and yes.

  1. Have whatever low-cal drinks you like (diet cola gets me through FDs) - herbals are good too. Tea or coffee so long as you count the cals in the milk.
  2. quite a lot of us don't eat breakfast all/any NFDs. I used to, but then found that I wasn't hungry the morning after an FD.

Shall we guess that you're drawn to 5:2 because it allows you to eat fish and chips sometimes? Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2015 15:26

Harry Ramsden You are one of my favourite meals.
Smile
Don't worry, we are a chatty bunch here.

5:2 is absolutely do it your way wrt what you eat and drink, so long as you stay within the FD calories and roughly average within TDEE over the NFDs.

So, specific answers:

  1. Whatever zero-cal drinks you want. If you like hot drinks with sugar & milk, just include these calories in your 500 FD

  2. Several of us skip breakfast nearly every day, especially the old hands. Talkinpeace and I do, so does breadandwine I think.
We feel better with the longer fast, so even on NFDs we fast about 16 hours; on NFDs about 36-40 hrs.

OP posts:
MrsHarryRamsden · 02/03/2015 15:29

Errol how did you guess I like fish and chips?? Strangely, my appetite on NFDs seems to have diminished and fast or junk food is less appealing, esp after a fast day. Is this common? I find it very strange but wonderful....

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2015 15:32

I'm still an unashamed greedy guts, but I do eat more healthily now: far more fish, veg and fruit, not much junk.
I have a big tasty dessert 3 days a week, instead of 5000-cal Choc Junk Frenzies

OP posts:
OctonautsAgain · 02/03/2015 15:49

BigChoc pizza and pasta are the things that I'm missing the most...I am a total carb monster. Hence my interest in cauli pizza candidates! (Not very good on my only attempt so far)

TalkinPeace · 02/03/2015 15:53

MrsHarryRamsden
I've not eaten breakfast for over 30 years - apart from on a Sunday or in hotels.
Learning to only eat when you are hungry, rather than on the clock or bored is one of the super fab bits of 5:2

And yes, your appetite will permanently diminish.
I eat a lot less than I used to spread across the week - but still have at least two blow out meals a week because I love food.

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 02/03/2015 16:11

Hi everyone, wow Monday Club is getting big, as we all get smaller Grin FD here too, had a good wkend, no junk food (like you said MrsHR, it's just not appealing to me, well at the minute anyway, oh welcome by the way) met friends on sat and stuck with two cups of coffee, even though cake was on offer, but I wasn't salivating over it as would normally be! And I managed a run of 20 mins, early on sat morn before anyone wakened. My threadmil arrived this morning, just in time, as I woke up to yet more snowAngry, so I shall be checking that out tonight. Did day 5 of my JM shread this morn, and I'm still feeling it....

Well done grannygrotts glad to hear those scales seen sense Wink and welcome back dotty glad to hear your on the mend. Thanks bigchoc for the bmi link, very interesting, apparently I'm compared to someone in Sweden Smile if only!!!

Right Im off to pack the skinny jeans for my 2 nights away with dh tomorrow Grin better pack the bigger ones for the way home though!!!

Good luck with the rest of your day Monday fasters....will check in for the next FD on Friday Wink

Meerka · 02/03/2015 16:49

Thank you bigChoc , it was a browser thing, can see it in another one.

Apparently I am Gabonese, with a BMI of 25.7. Better than 6 weeks ago when it was 27.7!

ErrolTheDragon · 02/03/2015 17:16

My threadmil arrived this morning,
You may have just coined a term for 'the sort of DH's mother who inspires AIBUs' Grin But well done on that early run, and glad the machine arrived - it's really not outdoors exercise weather, is it?

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 02/03/2015 17:27

Lol Errol never thought about it that way!!! Thanks, yeah I really enjoyed the run, even though it was bloody freezing, it's just so nice being outside, can't wait for spring to start properly Grin

dwinnol · 02/03/2015 18:04

Hello, can i join? Today is the first day of the rest of my life and I've decided to give the 5:2 a damn good go too!
I reduced my full time working hours to 4 days so that I can spend more time on the little business DP and I run together. It's physical work making furniture so as I'll be sawing and drilling I thought Monday would also be one of my FDs. I don't feel hungry when I'm busy, the other 4 day behind my desk are a different story. i haven't weighed myself, I can get quite obsessive about the scales and poor loss has resulted in my spinning into a "fuck it splurge" in the past. Will I see the benefits in my clothes or do i need to find out just how heavy I am right now? I might cry.

pregnantpause · 02/03/2015 18:19

Dwinol- when I started I didn't have scales and could see/ feel the loss and felt great. When I bought scales I plateaued for nearly three weeks and got really demotivated. Nearly had a complete blow out. I've put the scales away again. I am the type of person who obsesses and takes no loss very hard, and this triggers a negative cycle. I've decided to only weigh monthly and carry on enjoying my flatter stomach, the fewer chins and comfortable fit of my clothes, and ignore the scales if needs be.

However I've also bought a measuring tape- which is a far less fickle friend than the scales- I don't gain an inch before my period or after Sunday lunch- I consistently either stay the same or decrease in inches. Losing an inch of waist while losing nothing on the scales was what saved me from giving up.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/03/2015 18:23

Welcome dwinnon - sounds like a great day to start!

As to whether you 'have' to weigh yourself now - well, if you want to find your accurate TDEE and BMI you would, but if you think it's likely to derail you, perhaps don't yet. (You could calculate TDEE for goal weight instead maybe.) You will feel the difference in your clothes, and the other easy thing if you want an objective value is to measure your waist.

Bimblepops · 02/03/2015 18:44

FD done, kitchen closed. I've come in at 505cals, with a 20hr gap between meals and only 4hrs between my two meals today. Am coming up on 4l of water drunk.

Pilates is done, Shred is done and I've managed to get my Fitbit to come back to life after a 3 day "death". I'm pretty pleased with myself today!

My plan for this evening is to put the kids to bed, have a shower and then go and read in bed for a while before totally crashing out!

Well done to all other fasters today and welcome to the thread and your new WOE, dwinnon!
