BigChocFrenzy · 19/01/2015 22:24

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of Intermittent Fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight ( see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, you may lose much more quickly than someone in the healthy BMI range who just wants to trim a few lb.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start
. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This health blog Interview with a leading scientist gives some of the scientific explanation for why fasting helps you to lose weight AND maybe improve your health too.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese people (men & women), wrt health amd weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle or water, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across [[http://www.paleoforwomen.com/
shattering-the-myth-of-fasting-for-women-a-review-of-female-specific-responses-to-fasting-in-the-literature/ this article]] which is very negative about fasting for women with normal BMI.

Here’s our response:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) like LeanGains AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

These Pictures illustrate that many different body shapes & types that are healthy, so there is no single "right" shape.

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, fever, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

^^ So satisfying.

Breadandwine · 31/01/2015 19:51

[Meant to post this at lunchtime, but got sidetracked.]

One way to stop a binge (in this case a biscuit binge) in its tracks:

I'm a vegan who enjoys chocolate biscuits. However, there are, to my knowledge, none on the market - they all contain dairy of some sort.

My solution to this is to melt some vegan chocolate and spread it on a few Oatie biscuits. One square of Lidl's fairtrade dark chocolate will spread over 3 Oaties - 30 seconds in the freezer and they're ready.

I did this today after eating a larger than usual lunch (because I had just baked a loaf of toasted sesame seed wholemeal bread - and had 3 slices of bread rather than 2). I was pretty full, but it didn't stop me eyeing up the choccie biscuits.

I ate 2 and thought, "This is ridiculous!" So I munched on a slice of mushroom - and the desire for that other biscuit totally disappeared.

As vegan, I've always got some nutritional yeast, half a teaspoon of which will do the same thing - but I wanted to see if something else would do.

Congrats on your SV, Rachel
You've nearly finished your FD, Amiga You sound very strong
Clean and floss teeth right after supper, normally prevents late-night nibbles.

Not good on NFD's this week...too many birthdays and cake at work. FD's ok though. Going to have a FD tomorrow and that will give me an option of doing a third during the week.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2015 20:35

That's a good plan, pug
When a week has greedy social occasions, enjoy them Wink but just add an extra FD.

PUGaLUGS · 31/01/2015 21:17

Do you train in a gym BigChoc? I have started to do more weights. I get a bit put off by all the big body builder men at the weight section but I have started to think what the hell, I have as much right to be there as them.

MazzleDazzle · 31/01/2015 21:33

Well I've still got 750 cals left, but I'm not hungry so ill call it a day and it will compensate for last night's food and drink.

Taking the 2 DC to the cinema tomorrow to see Into the Woods - a fairytale staring Meryl Streep and James Corden. Looking forward to eating full TDEE with some treats too!

granny last night I had a few glasses of wine and I felt really tipsy, so much so I had to stop drinking. For a moment I thought I was going to be sick! Alcohol and rich food can be a shock to the system after eating so well.

Loved my PT session today. It gave me lots of energy and staved off the hunger pangs, hence why I've so many unused calories today.

Night folks.

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2015 21:50

pug Go for it ! Women should be proud to be physically strong.

No reason to be put off by big weightlifters or slimmer women or faster runners: everyone is only interested in their own performance, not yours.
Find a convenient gym and make use of the induction session they all have. The staff would create a training plan for you.

I've been a gym bunny for 17 years now and I love the facilities and company. I belong to 2 gyms, one at work, to maximise the hardcore classes I want.

I lift heavy and use the weights area. Also, my boxing and lifting classes are mostly hefty blokes, 20-35 years younger than I am < shrugs >
They can lift twice the weight I can, but I beat them in Tabata and abs Wink so I am not outclassed by any means.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2015 22:09

pug My profile pics show me working out at the gym. You can do this too.

granny You would have been running on empty on the NFD morning after.
You probably need to allow enough time for a couple of meals AND for digestion before having more than one glass.

OP posts:
PUGaLUGS · 31/01/2015 22:31

Wow BigChoc I am impressed Grin you look fantastic. Love the arm definition. The gym I go to is convenient for where I live although not very big. It would also be great if it opened at say 6am then I could go every morning (it opens at 7) during the week, three mornings I have an 8.15 start at work going the opposite way.

granny I am a lightweight when it comes to alcohol. We have been out for a Tesco tea tonight (Tesco vouchers to Strada) and I had a glass of wine, I have been asleep for an hour Grin. The only thing in my favour is that the dog who was across my lap snores louder than me!

BigChocFrenzy · 31/01/2015 23:23

Pug Same problem with gym opening hrs, so I train in the evenings. I've learnt to eat a good lunch, then at least a 4 hr gap before training, FDs and NFDs.
You've a dog ! Can you post a picture Hmm ?

Ooh Mazzle let me know what it's like, I quite fancy seeing it but the kids aren't convinced!

Pug she is gorgeous, I'm normally a big dog person (I have a big dopey chocolate Doberman) but I have a real soft spot for pugs, think its those eyes!

I've just entered myself into the Great North 10k in July, thinking it will be a good motivation for keeping up the exercise.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2015 14:00

She is adorable Grin ! < big hugs to Kiki >

Good for you, Dumpy The Great North should be fun and is a great motivator to get outside and train, despite the chilly weathet
Smile
I've just polished off well-earned pasta bolognese and big salad: I cycled through the snow to the gym for expert spin. It is HIT & HIIT with Tabata, so Sundays I don't eat until late lunch, to maximise the fat-burning benefits.

I hate snow and ice: I'm very fit, but at age 58 if the bike crashes down, I crunch rather than bounce. Last Tuesday, my wheels slid sideways while cornering and I landed safely on knee & wrist, but I know it could have been worse than scraped knee and bruises.

I still prefer 2 wheels to 4 though Smile ; I love being in the open and my journey is through 2 sleepy villages and fields, along ramblers paths.
I see horses, ducks, squirrels, hares and the occasional deer. Bliss.

Have a peaceful Sunday, everyone Smile

Hmmmm, I think I recognise that dog

Friends round for Sunday lunch today (including crumble and custard) so I had two boiled eggs (just that, no toast) for breakfast and will aim to minimise any further eating.

PUGaLUGS · 01/02/2015 18:25

Trills Grin I did wave to you further up the thread and said it was me Bella Grin

Love crumble and custard Envy

MazzleDazzle · 01/02/2015 19:17

Dumpy it was SHITE! So disappointed. I thought it was going to be amazing Sad. I even fell asleep!

It's a musical, but that weird opera style talking/singing as opposed to catchy numbers with a chorus. My kids are both movie buffs and they weren't impressed either!

I'd wait until it's available to download or rent if I were you.

Still had a lovely day out though! Had popcorn, a burger and ice cream, so will need an extra mini-FD to compensate.

The North Run sounds like a cracking idea to keep motivated! Good on you.

FD tomorrow! Got my trusty pan of soup (leek and potato this week) in the fridge.

Will catch up with all the Monday fasters tomorrow!

MazzleDazzle · 01/02/2015 19:21

This review sums it up! The plot and music let it down drastically.

5:2 Thread number 49: Have you gained & lost the same 20 lb so often that your cellulite has déjà vu ? Or want to dump several stone of ballast (not just STBX) ? Whatever your goals, join us !
MazzleDazzle · 01/02/2015 19:26

And almost every review on this sight rates it 1/10!

TalkinPeace · 01/02/2015 19:36

Not fasting at the weekend - as I never do - but interestingly as DH is not drinking I hardly am - so my calories intake a LOT lower than normal Smile

Trills · 01/02/2015 19:41

Sorry Bella!

It was funnier recognising the dog though :o

BigChocFrenzy · 01/02/2015 21:58

Participation in special sporting events like Tough Mudder, Great Northern, Trail Runs, Triathlons etc always seem to go well, because your endorphins ramp up, you enjoy the comradeship and the participation itself is the victory.

In contrast, cinema, shows or restaurants where you expect a great performance from someone else may often not fulfil your wishes / expectations.

OP posts:
Dumpyandabdabs · 01/02/2015 22:24

Ah no really Mazzle, well I'm glad I asked. Sorry you had to waste your money seeing it though, cinema isn't a cheap day out these days! Have to admit I'm not a big Corden fan but I was willing to overlook that had it been good.

I'm looking forward the 10k, haven't done an actual event for a few years but always used to enjoy them. I have roped in my friend to do it with me so it should be fun. There's a local company that have just set up who do the mud runs, I have to say I'm quite tempted although I may have to wait until my brand new trainers get a bit older ha ha.

FD tomorrow for me too, planning on those Beetroot and quinoa burgers that were mentioned a few weeks ago.
