Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of Intermittent Fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight ( see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, you may lose much more quickly than someone in the healthy BMI range who just wants to trim a few lb.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start
. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This health blog Interview with a leading scientist gives some of the scientific explanation for why fasting helps you to lose weight AND maybe improve your health too.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese people (men & women), wrt health amd weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle or water, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across [[http://www.paleoforwomen.com/
shattering-the-myth-of-fasting-for-women-a-review-of-female-specific-responses-to-fasting-in-the-literature/ this article]] which is very negative about fasting for women with normal BMI.

Here’s our response:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) like LeanGains AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

These Pictures illustrate that many different body shapes & types that are healthy, so there is no single "right" shape.

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, fever, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

I work from home so it hadn't occurred to me that it might be difficult. The places I used to work there would regularly be cakes in the coffee room, I think I'd have found it harder there (and then there was the long drive home...).

Being at home means I've got a wide variety of drinks - herbals, diet fizz, miso.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/01/2015 23:44

It's impossible to RTFT when some days there are just so many posts! If you do wade through one you'll find a lot of cheerfully repeated advice.

Breadandwine · 29/01/2015 01:47

Hi EarSlaps - nice to see you're still around!

Thanks for that Guardian article, Dotty - very useful. I like the bit about if you do lose muscle through exercising when fasting, it comes back stronger than before.

Just want to repeat, folks - there's no such thing as a stupid question. Pound to a penny others are thinking the same thing. Grin

All the best to Thursday's fasters.

Great advice bigchoc thanks for all your posts.

MazzleDazzle · 29/01/2015 07:01

Morning all!

It's bloody freezing here. Fasting today. Really can't be arsed, but it'll all be worth it when I can relax and enjoy some treats over the weekend.

And tomorrow's pay day! Hip hip hooray. I've been trying to abandon my frivolous ways. Managed to clear my overdraft in Nov (which I didn't even know I had, since I never check my balance! Blush), broke even in Dec and saved a fair whack in Jan.

Trying to lose weight, be healthier, exercise more, whilst saving money is TOUGH, especially n the dead of winter. Bring on Spring, I say. Desperately in need of some sunshine.

Happy fasting folks!

livefastlove · 29/01/2015 07:35

Good luck with your FD mazzle and any fasters. My dsis who I mentioned has lost a lot of weight by fasting said she has saved money eating this way, which is great especially when so many diets can be quite expensive to do.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2015 07:49

Yeah - it's a no-brainer really, but 'eat less... and more of that vegetables' is good news for our bank balances and disaster for the 'diet' industry!

I noticed in the newspaper a couple of weeks back that the cavalero nero (which I've been plugging all last year) is poised to become this year's 'superfood' - hope that means it doesn't spike in price! A big pile of that underneath dinner (esp on FDs but others too) is great.

It is indeed nasty out ... fortunately for me DH woke up in time to take DD to the bus-stop so I can stay in the warm.

Yay, despite a bit of a Cadbury mini eggs related lapse last night Blush I weighed in at 10st 12lbs this morning so that's another half pound or so off since last week. Very pleased about that. Onwards and upwards. Well, downwards Grin
Decided not to do a FD today but am going to aim for nicely under my TDEE to allow me some slack at the weekend when I almost always go over....

mazzle huge well done on the money side of things too - that takes serious effort so congrats Smile

amigababy · 29/01/2015 08:33

morning everyone. Well, the dentist is on for my wisdom tooth, not enough snow to put it off, so I've had my porridge, then its on with the fast.

mfp seems to have got stuck on my phone but I've had about 150 cals.

Good luck everyone fasting today.

GoldfishSpy · 29/01/2015 08:47

Morning everyone!

Anyone else find their mouth feels horrid the morning after a fast? I brushed my teeth and tongue about 3 times in the night to try to get rid of the horrid taste / feel, but this morning it is yucky again.

Another lb gone this morning. That's 6 lbs in just under 2 weeks. I'll take that! :)

ErrolTheDragon · 29/01/2015 08:58

Well done, SVs for dotty and goldfish.

FD for me too. I need to get dressed and do my exercise - was unexpectedly delayed by the dishwasher failing to drain. But I just love the internet - a quick google, the neff website comes up with a short video of how to access and clean the pump and (fingers crossed, it's doing a cycle now empty) it's sorted.

livefastlove · 29/01/2015 08:58

Good luck with your teeth Amiga its not very nice, but maybe it will help you stick to your fast! Maybe have something soft on hand if you do eat later Flowers

Trills · 29/01/2015 09:02

Good luck with your teeth! Painful teeth is a horrible thing to have, because the pain is in your head and that makes it worse somehow.

beaniac · 29/01/2015 09:07

Morning all,

Wanted to say thanks to everyone that got me through the wee hours of my FD on Mon. 2nd FD today, and actually my first fast during my totm. Does anyone find it particularly easier or harder? I'm a bit queasy and crampy currently so tea is doing the trick, but I know I'll feel a bit weak and glum later, so will have to avoid work biscuit tin like the plague!

Going to take Errol and Choc's advice and save cals for evening meal, which is courgetti and homemade (veggie) bolognese. We had a spiralizer from SIL at Christmas and it really is great. Does anyone else use one, any recipes to share?

Anyway good luck to all the fasters today and nearly the weekend so let's hope we've all saved a few cals for a glass of vino/slice of cake/slab of choc (delete as appropriate!)

Woke up this morning, sorting out in my head what the plans were for today and then remembered its a FD for me. Well, that's no problem I thought, then realised how much my mindset has changed since I started only a few weeks ago. On top of that my weight which has stubbornly refused to budge in the past couple of weeks has dropped by nearly half a kilo.

Popped onto the thread to see who else is fasting today and there were some lovely posts to catch up on, and I realise I have lots of company to keep me going in spirit.

I also now don't have breakfast on a FD and save as many calories as I can until the evening - in fact when skipping breakfast was mentioned I wondered where my long lost skipping rope might be lurking so I could literally skip breakfast.

Amiga having teeth out is never something to look forward to but I can honestly saying having my painful wisdom teeth out was one of the best decisions I made. Even the day after, I woke up realising that the pain which had been dragging me down for months and months and months was gone. Okay, my mouth was sore (but no swelling which was a bonus) and I ate somewhat gingerly for a few days, but I felt so much better.

Mazzle Wohooo for payday tomorrow. Stay strong on your FD everyone.

livefastlove · 29/01/2015 09:45

That's great lady yes the hunger does go off if you wait a bit, its strange. I did have breakfast today after all, but going to skip lunch. I never eat lunch at work, but sometimes have a snack about 2, but going to skip that and just have my dinner. We always eat early about 4. Then the danger is sncking all evening which I will try to avoid. My dh works in a cake factory and has brought home a big box of nice crispycake bars which is not helping!

SwearySwearyQuiteContrary · 29/01/2015 09:49

Hi everyone, I'm going to give 5:2 a go and need encouragement! I've put on a lot of weight in the last year which is most likely menopause related, which I was officially diagnosed with at the grand old age of 39, and the side effects of HRT. I'd like to drop 10 kilos ideally, but I'll take looking fab for my 40th birthday party in May!!
I have a quick question if that's ok. I understand that for menopausal women, TDEE intake decreases as metabolism decreases. If my TDEE is 1800 per the calculator for my age, what do you think it should actually be factoring in the marvellous menopause?

Good luck to our Thursday fasters. You all sound in great spirits and very motivated Smile
beaniac With totm, you may have carb cravings, so be careful of portion size if you have rice / pasta for supper.

I hope your mouth isn't too painful, Amiga Sounds like you might be on soups and pasta for a few days

Good to hear your finances are improving, Maz
5:2 / 4:3 is the only "diet" I know that actually saves quite a bit from your grocery bills: even if you have a ready meal on FDs, it's still fewer meals. It is often healthier too, with more veg and no sweet junk or alcohol on at least 2 days per week.
Other diets with special foods / potions or buying more meat can be unaffordable for many.
The big food manufacturers HATE this WOE Grin

Welcome, Sweary
Smile
With meno / metabolic issues, I recommend you calculate the TDEE for your goal weight and set your activity level to sedentary, even if you exercise.
If you are already sedentary, reduce TDEE by 10%.

That's a very rough estimate, so you can adjust if need be.
Give any change in estimated TDEE a 2 weeks trial, because our bodies don't come equipped with instant switches.
Don't forget to measure your waist and hips, so you can monitor the change.

I'm 58, so well post-meno. I certainly noticed how my body changed in its behaviour, especially the last few years. Even though I've always been an exerciser, only 5:2 worked for me. In particular, it removed fat creeping onto my waist.
btw, I'd been low carbing for years, for weight maintenance, but I noticed that completely stopped working work for me post-meno. I now have to be careful to stay within at least moderate fat.

goldfish well done on your loss! And yes, I often get the yucky mouth thing too, despite drinking gallons of water on FDs Smile

granny half a kilo is ace, well done! And yes, it's amazing how quickly your mind does adjust itself. I'm on a NFD today and have just found myself thinking, spontaneously, "oh, but I don't want much of a lunch". Weird
However I am going to enjoy polishing off what's left of the mini eggs at some point today Grin Lady, enjoy yours on your next NFD!
