Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of Intermittent Fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight ( see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, you may lose much more quickly than someone in the healthy BMI range who just wants to trim a few lb.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start
. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This health blog Interview with a leading scientist gives some of the scientific explanation for why fasting helps you to lose weight AND maybe improve your health too.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese people (men & women), wrt health amd weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle or water, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across [[http://www.paleoforwomen.com/
shattering-the-myth-of-fasting-for-women-a-review-of-female-specific-responses-to-fasting-in-the-literature/ this article]] which is very negative about fasting for women with normal BMI.

Here’s our response:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) like LeanGains AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

These Pictures illustrate that many different body shapes & types that are healthy, so there is no single "right" shape.

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, fever, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

. or bite the bullet and make Saturday a one-off FD

OP posts:
grannygrotts · 25/01/2015 23:26

Checking back in again - feels like I'm starting all over again. These past couple of weeks have lost nothing but my mum on Wednesday Sad. Not unexpected but feel strangely lost without her even though meaningful conversation ceased years ago as her alzheimers progressed. On top of that I start a new role at work tomorrow which I have been forced into and with no training; apparently I'll "be fine" but am dreading it.

TBH don't feel much like keeping going with 5:2 (or any weight loss programme) but it has to be done and I need to be in control of something at the moment. Am going to need to change my FDs since dry January also fell by the wayside last week, and Friday, which used to be a FD will return to a two Wine glass evening.

Was doing Tuesday and Friday but will change to Monday and Thursday starting tomorrow.

Am taking on board all advice about cutting out the snacks and incorporating those calories into mealtimes and no eating at least 2 - 3 hours before bedtime. Should probably aim to increase my exercise now to burn up some of the Wine calories I'll be consuming.

Hope everyone has a good day tomorrow.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/01/2015 00:00

So sorry to hear about your mum, Granny
Flowers
Although expected, it's nevertheless a deep shock to lose a parent at any age. It's natural to feel very sad. Also, you would have been worn down by her illness over the last few years.

It's tough you have a new role at work to cope with now, but they obviously have faith in your ability, so you believe in yourself too. I hope you soon get used to the new work.

It's a positive step for your future wellbeing to continue with 5:2, but try to add some pampering to your routine: Can you have a spa day, a yoga class, or a massage, even a weekend evening routine of relaxing in a hot bubble bath.
A short walk most days helps the mood and can be your extra exercise.

That sounds really tough, granny. Deepest sympathy on your loss. Flowers

Hoping to avoid Alzheimer's is one (of the many) reasons I keep intermittent fasting. And, coincidentally, I came across by Prof. Mark Mattson on what happens to the brain when we practice some form of IF.

Good to see you using the 'C' word, there! Control over what we eat is one of the few things left when everything else falls apart.

Hope your new job isn't as bad as you think it might be!

GoldfishSpy · 26/01/2015 06:45

Sorry to hear about your mum, granny. Take care of yourself today.

FD here. Got lots of sewing to do, DS3 seems better so will probably go for a walk if the weather is ok.

Have a good day everyone.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 26/01/2015 07:07

So sorry about your mum Granny

FD today for me. I think Monday is a popular FD?
Good luck everyone.

livefastlove · 26/01/2015 07:09

So sorry to hear that Granny. I am sure your mum would want you to have good health and move ahead with your career so you can do these things knowing she would be pleased. It is hard though so just take one step at a time.
I am planning to fast today too.

MazzleDazzle · 26/01/2015 07:46

Sorry for your loss Granny. Regardless of how expected a loved one's death is, it's still emotionally draining. Look after yourself.Flowers

I just managed to average TDEE over the weekend. Didn't make the best choices so feel a bit bleurgh today. I feel like I really need this FD, though I want to hide under my duvet! Got a PT session this morning too. I'm sure I'll be in the zone by lunchtime.

Good luck to all the Monday fasters! Will pop on here later for some encouragement if I'm flagging.

Lady I find it much better to skip breakfast and just have coffee that way you get a better meal later on and I do find the morning goes easily as I am busy at work. I do miss my toast though!

Dotty342kids · 26/01/2015 09:02

Sad news granny. I hope today, in the new role, is better than you're expecting Smile

Fairly certain I was over TDEE at the weekend as it involved Wine, chocolates and a meal out on Saturday and yesterday we made cake and had Mexican for dinner - not exactly low in either fat or carbs Blush

Ah well, today is at least a FD! However, just remembered that I'm at book group tonight so am bound to have at least a small glass of wine. Hmm, may have to rethink dinner options to allow the cals for that Grin

CarrotPuff · 26/01/2015 09:04

I'm planning a mini FD today of about 800 kcals. Just had some scrambled eggs for breakfast, will have soup for lunch, not sure about dinner yet.

Right, need to go out now before DS drives me crazy. Good luck to all the fasters today! And non fasters too of course Wink

PUGaLUGS · 26/01/2015 09:19

Sorry about your mum Granny Flowers. Hope you new job goes ok x.

Fast day here for me. Just got back from the gym, need to walk the dog then shower for work.

0% Total yog with a few raspberries for lunch and salmon with a non dressed salad for tea.

PUGaLUGS · 26/01/2015 09:23

Although it seems the dog doesn't want to go out for a walk... As soon as I mentioned the w word she hid...

Ihavenobrain · 26/01/2015 09:28

Can I just ask??
First day for me. Tummy grumbling already.
Do I really know what I'm doing ??

Dotty342kids · 26/01/2015 09:32

Ihavenobrain - what do you need to know? Ask away Grin as there's lots of helpful folk on here

Dotty342kids · 26/01/2015 09:33

pugalugs I have a Jack Russell who does that at the slightest hint of rain. I can barely get her out in the garden for a wee, let alone for a walk Smile

PUGaLUGS · 26/01/2015 09:52

Dotty, the slightest jangle of the blummin lead and she hides... Doesn't matter if it is sunny, raining or snowing she hates her walks and she also if the weather isn't good hates going in the garden too. She doesn't get a choice in the matter though Grin

GoldfishSpy · 26/01/2015 10:00

Ihave I find that hunger comes and goes in waves - it doesn't usually get worse and worse. Drink some water and then have a coffee and get busy with something - you may find you feel less hungry in an hour that you do now.

Ihavenobrain · 26/01/2015 10:03

Ok will do. I'm at work and it's so boring but there's no food here so that's good.
Just don't want to feel sick as that's a usual symptom for me when I go over hungry. Oh and the shakes.
I suppose that will happen later Hmm

chevronstripes · 26/01/2015 10:14

Hi, day one for me too after about 6 months of lurking on this thread, reading about 5:2 and generally procrastinating. So I've officially missed a meal and have survived. I've got a few non- stressful things planned for the day and an endless supply of hot water with lemon and ginger because coffee on an empty stomach makes me boak.

I'm 5'6" and weigh 13 st 6 and really want to get down to 10 stone again. Is that doable? How long will it take?

GoldfishSpy · 26/01/2015 10:24

Chevron, from what I've read 3 st is doable in as little as 6 months.

Have you been on the 'Inspiration' thread? There's a link in the OP.

chevronstripes · 26/01/2015 10:27

Thanks will have a look. I just need a push to get me through the first wee bit so this becomes a habit

Hardhaton · 26/01/2015 10:54

Ok so stupid question.
How much excerise is too much on a fd. So I have just done Zumba and yoga making 360 cals burnt, surely if excerise amounts too more calories burnt than eaten that's not a gd thing? I'm totally confused and may have over thought it.
Also my nfd cals are supposed to be 2400 odd, there's no way I'm going to eat that much all last week before the diet I was only managing 1800 at most.

igivein · 26/01/2015 12:20

Fasting here today. The weekend was a bit of a disaster food0-wise, - eating at friend's houses and not really being in control of what I had, but never mind, back on track today.
Can I throw my question into the pot?
If I stick to 5:2 and gradually shrink to sylph-like proportions, will my skin shrink with me or will I end up looking like a stick in a wrinkled pink tent?Grin
