TalkinPeace · 21/07/2014 12:22

This thread is for those of us who have been practicing IF (Intermittent Fasting) for quite a while ( it being nearly 2 years since the Michael Mosely TV programme aired ) and are now at, or nearing, their target healthy weight.
It's also for anyone who is doing it for the health benefits alone.

How do we mix fasts and a stable food intake while having little or no weight to lose?
How do we ensure that this WOL keeps us at the healthy weight long term rather than revert to yoyo games?
How do we ensure that we keep ourselves looking great rather than just thin?

More and more of us have been maintaining at our original goal weight for many months, and others are joining all the time.
Obviously, the more the merrier!
It is also worth considering whether a second, leaner target might be achievable.

You'll find the first four maintenance threads and all the main 5:2 threads for posters practising IF to lose weight here Fasting / 5:2 on the diet forum. We're currently on thread no. 46, but there is a new main thread every 2-3 weeks.

There are three other associated threads:
This one, which is an absolute goldmine of Tips and Links on how to practice IF, and the research behind it.

And here is a treasure trove of 5:2 recipes, mostly low calorie for fasting days, but there are also recipes for when you want to treat yourself. And, now we're maintaining, we'll need more of these!

Since I started the last Maintainers thread the importance of exercise has come even more to the fore, as part of our general health and to help weight loss. BigChocFrenzys thread is here

Have decided to caveat my above comments.

14 year old boys who get to lunchtime having forgotten to eat earlier are horrible creatures who must be force fed carbs or protein when they first awake Xmas Grin

Then again, having had a light snack lunch we are all lasting through till blow out supper of Moules and baguette and fizzy wine at 7pm

Yo Laska good to hear from you.
I'll not be fasting next week but am doing lots of 16:8 as it fits with the season.

Lots of fireworks outside since lunchtime here.
Enjoy NYE, everyone and have a very happy 2015
Xmas Smile

TalkinPeace · 31/12/2014 20:14

One nice thing about living in a really active port :
the ships (particularly the liners just off shore) put on such STUPENDOUS midnight firework displays that most locals save their cash
so we have it quiet till at least 11pm

and the foghorns from the tankers and container ships make the windows shake (we are several miles from the water)

its a bit like hearing the pool of London kick off when I was a kid.

I like New Years - normally celebrate but am just too lurgied this year - and about to have my Berlin break so will survive.

Happy New Years Eve all : May 2015 treat you well.

Laska! How nice to see you - I was thinking about you earlier today (yesterday)! Please stay here and post!

Happy New Year, everyone! Here's looking forward to another year of 'Maintenance!'

BTW, I have a video of Oscar (15 months) tidying up his Lego if anyone would like to see it.

Anglaise1 · 01/01/2015 16:56

Bonne année, happy new year and good health to you all.

Do you have any goals for 2015 (apart from maintaining)?

Laska so nice to see you back, I hope you stay around on the thead.

TIP Have a lovely week in Berlin, a couple of my students have been and loved it.

Back on the fasting next week, although moderate fasts 'cos now training starts seriously for my March marathon. 2015 main goal for me is to finish it in one piece!

BigChocFrenzy · 02/01/2015 13:53

Finally, I visited Apple and this is my new iPad Air 2.
Quite a difference in response

Breadandwine · 02/01/2015 21:45

Happy days, BC! You won't know yourself!

I've just received my son's cast-off iPhone 5s (he's now got a 6) and I have to work out how to transfer all my info over from my 4s. The phone shop was heaving this afternoon. Next week will be easier, I'm sure.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/01/2015 23:41

b&w On the new phone, just go to Settings ==> iCloud and log in under the Apple ID you used on the old phone.
I've an iPhone 5s too, nice bit of kit.

Skinnyeye · 04/01/2015 10:49

Morning all definitely not maintaining just stopped in to say hi and I'm back. It will be a while before I get back to maintenance but every journey starts with a first step. You guys can be my inspiration Flowers

Anglaise1 · 05/01/2015 07:03

Hi skinnyeye - welcome back and good luck with getting back to your goal. There are a few of us who have slipped by a few lbs or more, I'm one of them Blush. Despite running nearly every day and clocking up 50 miles a week I still put on a couple of kgs over the Christmas period. Confused
So back to fasting today.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/01/2015 09:36

Intake has 4 x effect on weight as exercise, for almost everyone.
I expect we'll soon have more nice eager newbies on the main thread.
Smile
btw: my old iPad can't do EMail any more and the nano-Sim for the new Air 2 will take up to 2 weeks to arrive. No wifi in my vilage

So, anyone wanting to EM me, pls use MN message instead.

Anglaise1 · 06/01/2015 08:17

Tried a different fast day yesterday, with very small salad lunch (150 cals) and dinner (350 cals) - before I'd always gone all day without eating anything and felt ravenous in the evening, especially if I'd gone for a 10km run during the day. I felt better doing it this way rather than the 24 hour fast and eating all calories in the evening.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2015 11:57

I normally have lunch too, on a training FD. Otherwise, I felt I was lacking a bit of strength during exercise.
Probably because we both train quite intensely and prioritise performance.

catsrus · 06/01/2015 17:11

Hi All

back again - had a fab Xmas and NY, was very over indulgent and have put on 7 lbs over the season - but am starting back on 5:2 this week, made easier by less Wine around and all the cake and chocolates eaten by marauding family and friends Grin. would hope to be back in my comfort zone in a couple of months. Good to see so many old friends still here!

TalkinPeace · 06/01/2015 21:15

Has decided that Berlin food is not at all good for my waist. Ah well. Love it though.
Will fast and go dry when I get home Smile

Skinnyeye · 08/01/2015 21:01

Hi Maintainers still here and fasting today fingers crossed I'm back on track and will be join you on maintenance soon

Anglaise1 · 09/01/2015 12:47

Hope your fast day went well Skinny. I've been very careful this week, fasted Monday again with having a small lunch and it was much easier. In 2kgs time I think I'll be able to maintain much more easily by splitting my 600 cals over 2 meals instead of fasting for 24 hours.

TalkinPeace · 09/01/2015 17:29

Well I'm safely back in the UK. Buffet breakfast and Berlin bakeries have left me feeling mahoosive. This weekend I'll still eat and be merry but the fasting starts on Monday and DH and I are both going to go dry till half term well that is the theory so that will get me back to fighting weight and size!

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 09/01/2015 21:05

Welcome back, tip Do report back on your alcohol-free half term Hmm
I'm having a few weeks of choc abstinence, to rest my pancreas after Xmas < wails > Shock
I'm sure we'll all benefit from our healthy regimes < tries to convince self > Hmm

Tonight, I downloaded and read Mosely & Mimi's revised Fast Diet book. I got it mainly to have the list of references at the back. They quote several useful studies from 2014 and go into the health benefits of fasting, also the Fast Fitness Blasts. Many FD recipes, for those who like to cook not me

Not a lot I hadn't read before, but it was only £3.85 at Amazon = a couple of coffees, fair enough.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/01/2015 12:40

Oh and reading Mosely saying "don't eat between meals" suddenly reminded me of my parents repeating that mantra 1,000s of times in my childhood < nostalgic > Amazing the 180 degree turn there.

TalkinPeace · 10/01/2015 13:27

Funny isn't it - how so much of the nutritionists advice of the last 30 years - which was based on the people in weight clinics ie those who were not eating well - has turned out to be bunk

MMs recent articles in the Daily Heil have been interesting reading on the website, not given money to Rothermere

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2015 11:12

Ah, now I'm on my new Ipad Air 2 with its sparkly nano-SIM. Much quicker and I have EM again.
Just in time for the post-holiday rush of all our lovely newbies

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2015 15:14

I've been reading the 6-week 5:2 plan that Mumsnet are pimping < sigh, grumpy growl >
The "free trial" is of course free advertising, or that firm wouldn't offer it.
We keep saying 5:2 doesn't need any subscriptions or special foods, but boy, people still keep trying to exploit it as a money machine.
