The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Congrats Betsy! I couldn't agree more about the healthy eating and exercise. I (re)started 5:2 at the beginning of January when DD2 was 8 weeks old (I'm EBF). I've lost all the weight I wanted and more (today's weigh in was 8st8 and my new target is 8st7 - I'm 5'4 so BMI is now 20.4 with a body fat of 21.7%) but as I now exercise 5 days a week (shred) my whole body shape and look has changed - I have very slim, muscular arms, a flat tummy and much smaller thighs (I'm a pear shape). I LOVE it!! I can wear what I want and not feel I have to hide parts of my body away. This week has been a real NSV for me as, after 6 months of still eating choc/biscuits/cake/processed food etc on NFDs, I've finally cleaned up my diet and am now cutting right back on those and having nuts, fruit, whole grain carbs instead. Also drinking much more water and eating tonnes of veg. I feel great and I'm not sure if its the change in diet or the mental positivity from finally making the change. I know I can stick to this, and maintaining will be straightforward as long as I can do that. Hooray for 5:2 Grin

Not2bObvious · 27/06/2014 10:53

That's brilliant Betsy to reach the 4 stone. My worst (apart from preg weight) was 13.7 stone as well. Just weighed in today and my overall weight loss in around a month is .8 of a pound which, considering I was away for nearly 2 weeks of it & eating/drinking freely I am delightedGrin I've never recovered from holiday weight gain like I am these last couple of weeks. But I have a really ambitious target for the next 4 weeks (beach holiday coming up) I want so badly to get to under 11 stone, I'm 11.7.4 as of this morning.
Is it impossible??? I would safely say I could drop maybe 3 pounds without massive stress but c. 8 pound is that out of all realms of possibility? Of course if I actually stuck to 2 x 500 fd's, and followed the good advice about tdee behaviour I'd have more of a chance lol! Anyone managed a strict bout of behaviour , any motivational tips?

meadowquark · 27/06/2014 10:55

Betsy wow. I am 35 and I would like to be where you are at my age of 38. I called one karate club and asked if they have any women there; they said they have few women from 14 yo and one mid 30ties.. I am still a bit embarrased to try it out as I would probably be the oldest, the fattest and the most unfit and everyone would watch me struggling

Coconut oil is my discovery of the year. I only have up to 1tbs a day in my coffee or on seeded toast, but if I dare to "waste" 116kcal on seemingly unnecessary oil, then I must think it is good. It is supposed to speed up metabolism. I believe it suppresses my appetite by pure fat lining my stomach. It smells coconut biscuits so I can stay away from biscuits without struggle. It seem to give my body nice smell (or it could be just my imagination?).

BetsyBell · 27/06/2014 10:57

Labra Awesome, well done you. Not feeling self-conscious is extremely liberating isn't it? Depressing that most of us feel self conscious in the first place but I guess that's the reality of modern living. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love 5:2!

BetsyBell · 27/06/2014 11:10

Meadow If the karate club isn't right for you then try another - all these Martial Arts clubs have their own styles I think. I really lucked out, big time.

I will definitely try out coconut oil, sounds right up my street. I've gone off dairy lately, even butter, but love nuts and eat loads most days. I've decided that nut oil is not like other calories as there seems to be no negative repercussion to my excessive eating of them (raw nuts that is, not salted or flavoured).

Not2 My best way of being strict is cutting out booze and sugar... planning for exercise sessions is good too, you can't drink if you're doing an evening run, or an early session the next day!

I avoid eating when out and about (running errands or whatever) and find excuses to get out walking or cycling as much as possible. If you miss lunch because you're busy - so what? You do it on a fast day no problem. Ie avoid cafes and sandwich shops while out.

But yes, get back to basics with fast days, tdee and no snacking, and I reckon those few pounds will melt off as quickly as your holiday ones did.

Not2bObvious · 27/06/2014 11:17

Thanks v much for the advice Betsy - I managed my first alcohol free week this week for over a month and I know that's helped get me back on track. When I say alcohol free I do mean Mon-Thurs but for the next 4 weeks, I think I'll aim for Sun-Thurs, I do 6 weeks alcohol free a year, I probably sound like a lush but that's my limitGrin But if I'm alco'free for 5 days that will have a knock on affect for cals /sugar etc.
One day at a time, gotta make them good fd's or nfd's though!

meadowquark · 27/06/2014 11:23

Does alcohol really has such impact? The other week I had 3-4 bottles of cider over the weekend and manage to lose 2.5lbs still. Though most weeks I do not drink any alcohol (and lose much less somehow).

Not2bObvious · 27/06/2014 11:26

Wow Labra that's a brilliant acheivement and it's lovely you feel so happy in yourself! I did hate the saying in ww when they'd say nothing tastes as good as skinny feels but to twist it slightly, nothing feels as good as looking in the mirror and liking what you see. Even though I've still a way to go, the pleasure I get from fitting into a size 12 is huge! Made me a dreadful shopaholic thoughConfused

BetsyBell · 27/06/2014 11:29

I think that's the way to go not2 - strict Mon-Thur and then relax a bit at weekends, stops you feeling like you're on a diet and I (usually) found I didn't go too mad as my stomach and appetite had shrunk a bit over the week.

I do recommend attempting a bit of a run or something on Sunday morning as it curbs behaviour on Saturday evening! Having said that, I have managed a fairly epic run on a hungover Sunday so it's perfectly possible Grin

Mind you, as I've got smaller and fitter I find I'm far less inclined to alcohol, a bit of a massive shock to me tbh, I was not known for being abstemious once upon a time.

Not2bObvious · 27/06/2014 11:29

Meadow for me and alcohol, I don't think it's necessarily the cals in it, even though it is highly calorific. For me it's the fact I lose control around food, so it's not 2 glasses of wine x amount of cals, it's 2 glasses of wine a packet of crisps, a small bowl of nuts... You know what I mean. If my indulgence was just the wine I'd be fine. I suppose the other school of thought is it's unnecessary calories. But for me on Fridays especially it's very necessary Wink

Not2bObvious · 27/06/2014 11:33

Betsy already there on the running Grin I run pretty much every Saturday and Sunday. But if I lose that extra day of wine & nibbles on Sunday, I'll probably give myself enough of a reduction to cut another pound over the 4 weeks, woohoo that's the way I'll arrange it in my mind!
Maybe I should have another mfp account that tracks what I resisted...hmm interesting idea

BetsyBell · 27/06/2014 11:36

5:2 can apply to everything not2 Wink - allow 2 days for the naughty consumables and five for the good! Do you do sprints with your runs? Now that's a quick way to fat loss I've found. 30seconds (or whatever) flat out 4 times during or after your run. Quick and amazing.

Not2bObvious · 27/06/2014 11:41

Funny you should mention the sprints, I have been getting faster at running (about bloody time, at it 3 years on/off, v on the last year ) and my only sprints we're cause of gut instinct fear in quiet area or sighting of scary dog!! I'm going give that a go my next run. Thanks for the advice, will also drag get myself back to HIIT exercise videos, just a tad poorly at the min, but praying for recovery as I have a meal out later that I'd hate to cancel, and of course kids to look after in around an hour when school lets out

Breadandwine · 27/06/2014 14:09

Some lovely heart-warming stories on here as usual! Smile

Well done everyone!

Popping on the thread to say that Dr Mosely's Horizon programme on IF has reappeared on iPlayer - just look for Horizon progs.

And Jennie Bond had an article in Yesterday's D Mirror on how taking up running at the age of 63 had cured her long standing insomnia. Only took a couple of weeks, apparently. I couldn't find the article online for some reason.

Southeastdweller · 27/06/2014 14:21

I've also discovered coconut oil this year. It's very versatile but I must admit that I only use it at the moment to scramble eggs with. This is the one I have and recommend.

Bollard · 27/06/2014 14:55

Labra that is very inspiring, both sv and nsv. How much weight did you lose? I'm the same height as you and at this weeks weigh-in was 10st 4.5lbs. I'm "officially" aiming to lose a stone but secretly I would love to weigh 8st something.
BetsyBell you look awesome, like a totally different person from your "before" photos.

TalkinPeace · 27/06/2014 15:32

Meadowquark
Alcohol is HIGHLY calorific AND slows the metabolism AND makes meyou lose control around the fridge/larder door
AND its bad for your liver and skin and hair
so the more days per week you can avoid it the better.

ICanHearYou · 27/06/2014 17:00

Well I am enjoying my feast day. I had a McDonald's with the kids, was just inside my 1500 recommended calories for the day but I also had a latte on the way to work :)

But it's fine because I can just catch up on my fast

BigChocFrenzy · 27/06/2014 18:28

Chopsie I agree, you should rest it, to avoid turning a minor strain into a major one. You'll soon be 100% again.
That's the advice for any minor injury: rest a few days.

Lovely inspiring NSVs and stories from many 5:2ers today

Betsy's experience losing the last 7 lb is an important example:
. Her weight was lost very healthily & slowly
. She changed her eating and exercise permanently
. So maintenance is just automatic

All exercisers :
Add some HIIT to your routine and improve your fitness
HIIT for cardio, e.g. skipping, sprints for running or cycling
HIIT for strength, e.g. fast intervals of pressups, squats, situps

Meadow Don't be embarrassed about being the oldest in a gym class:
I'm almost 58 whereas the others on my classes are 20-35 years younger, mostly fit, muscular young men
I usually thrash them in Tabata or abs. I'm near the top on pressups.
Noone thinks I'm too old - including me
Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 27/06/2014 20:35

I've been using coconut oil to fry for a few months now, for savoury and sweet food. It's excellent and has a very mild flavour which enhances the food.
It has a higher smoke point than other oils, so food is healthier.

OP posts:
MindfulBear · 27/06/2014 21:52

DS loves coconut oil on his toast instead of butter. He is 25mo!
It is yummy and healthy....... I also put it on his skin and he smells like a coconut Biscuit ....... do you think if I had a nibble it would count towards my calories for the day?!!!

BetsyBell · 27/06/2014 22:02

I'm sold on the coconut oil. Good job I barely buy wine any more - I make up the costs in nuts, nut butter, quinoa and now interesting oil!

MindfulBear · 27/06/2014 22:50

interesting point .... qunoa- what do you do with it? I remember it being a fad a while back and trying it. I thought it pretty boring and tasteless tbh, especially compared to the rice/pasta/couscous I would have had instead of it....

Labracadabra · 28/06/2014 07:01

Another NSV yesterday (sorry!) I needed some knee high black boots to go with a fancy dress (60s) outfit for a party as I only have brown ones. Whenever I've tried to borrow boots in the past they've always been to small for my calves, even if the boots' owner was much bigger than me, their calves always seemed to be slimmer! So it was with some trepidation I tried on my friends boots yesterday - they fit, with room to spare! That's one example of how 5:2 and exercise changes your whole body! Grin
