The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Skippy Flowers Brilliant news, well done.

re. Salt - I sometimes have a teaspoon of Marigold Bouillon in hot water on a fast day, or miso soup. Not that those options are appealing in summer hot weather! I usually end up having some ham, salty fish or a few olives so definitely naturally eating salty things. It's a good idea to think about your salt in take as part of a fast day though. With so few calories to play with it's a tricky business getting the nutrient balance right.

Bimblepops · 17/07/2014 12:05

Excellent work, Skippy, you should be really proud of yourself for all of your hard work.

Supposed to be a FD for me today, no breakfast and 1.5l of water drunk so far. Feeling very tired and rather irritable today. Also getting a sharp brief pain in my stomach when I drink, which is a bit odd. Skipped dinner last night, as I was still full from lunch, so haven't really eaten since 2.15pm yesterday. Not sure whether I'm going to do a full FD or not, guess I'll play it by ear.

Good luck to all FD'ers today.

meadowquark · 17/07/2014 13:46

Skippy amazing SV to be out of obese category!

NFD for me today and as always it is much harder to stay within TDEE, than to stay within 500kcal on FDs. I skipped the unknown this time (chickpeas) and went for salad for lunch instead. Sounds healthy if you don't mention 2 squares of chocolate, watermelon, frappe latte and some home-made muffins...

MazzleDazzle · 17/07/2014 16:29

Took my DC to the beach as the sun is shining. Buckets, spades and a new inflatable wee boat for the outdoor pool near the beach and still my eldest wasn't happy. Winged, complained and gave me backchat, so in the end, despite me giving her a warning, I had to drag everyone home. Que screaming like a banshee from the eldest. I am mortified.

We live in a small village and I have a responsible job (working with kids!).

To make matters worse, we left the inflatable boat in the pool! I'm loathe to go back for it. Never want to show my face there again!

Everyone says that it happens to every parent, they all have their moments etc, etc, but I mean banshee screaming of Exorcist proportions: kicking, yelling, threatening me! She's 6!

I'm known as being pretty laid back and easy going. I never lose my temper, so how on earth did I manage to produce this demon child? She has been like this since she was a baby. I remember going into her room to comfort her when she was teething and she would bite and scratch me.

Well, rant over . Apologies for hijacking the thread. I feel a lot better after venting though.

Bollard · 17/07/2014 18:03

Sorry Mazzle. That sounds really grim. I had a hideous trip home from school today, plenty of public humiliation. I cancelled a trip out as a result and DD still doesn't realise that "sorry" isn't a magic wand that gets her what she wants.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/07/2014 21:42

Ooh, poor Mazzle coping with your little demon.
Vent away. Much better than consoling yourself with a Cake mountain

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 17/07/2014 21:44

And Bollard also suffering.
Maybe the weather and the end of term is leading to tantrums

OP posts:
MrsFlorrick · 17/07/2014 22:35

(((((Mazzle))))) and Wine for you.
Huge sympathy. Took my two to the beach at Whitstable today.
And I did have to endure a fair bit of whining.

I bet you have a similar issues to me. If we stay at home my oldest (DD) whines and misbehaves because she wants to go out. Loves being out and about. Even a trip to the post office or Waitrose will do
But if I dare to venture out my youngest (DS), starts whining and wailing and complaining. And generally doesn't stop till we are back in the house.
Argh. You just can't win can you?!!?

I feel your pain mazzle. Its hideous when you experience public meltdown and you can't get the day back on track.

DD was fine today because we were out but DS was complaining (the seaweed was yucky and seagulls were too loud and dogs/people/stones on the beach were annoying. Oh and bees were after him (1 measles bee all day) Hmm. I had buckets, spades, fishing nets, those light weight kite things to fly. And still he bloody well whined away. On a super sunny day on the beach.

Wine For you Mazzle. Solidarity!

Bimblepops · 17/07/2014 23:06

Children are an absolute delight, aren't they?! Mine have only narrowly survived the day...

I've sort of fasted today. Between 2.15pm yesterday and whenever I have airport breakfast tomorrow, I will have consumed less than 1,000 cals, prob around 800. So I'm counting that as a win and my second FD of the week.

Off on hols tomorrow and I CANNOT WAIT!

meadowquark · 18/07/2014 09:14

Morning all. 3rd FD for me this week. I think I will stick with around 800 kcal as I don't want to overdue it. I am on my regular menu... cottage cheese (quark), pasta with chorizo, lettuce, cheese triangles, coconut coffee, a square of chocolate.

Bimble I think 800kcal is really good. Have a lovely holiday!

Mazzle I too have a bitey whingey moaney 6 year old, I can fully symphatize with you!

livelablove · 18/07/2014 09:47

Good luck with your 3rd FD meadow. I think sticking to 800 for your 3rd day is a good plan as it allows you that little bit of wiggle room. 3 FD in a week is pretty tough!

My dd is 9 now and she has a challenging personality. She isn't a screamer thank goodness, but everything can be an argument with her, when she is in a bad mood and it is always my fault when things go wrong. She tires my brain out sometimes! I do go for food when I feel a bit frustrated with that kind of thing. feeling a bit nervous of the summer holidays with regards to fasting.

I ate a bit too much yesterday and didn't count my calories. I feel a bit bleurgh and not so motivated, also the heat is getting to me.

DramaAlpaca · 18/07/2014 10:33

Wine for all of you coping with demanding little darlings.

My eldest was the worst for public tantrums, so I sympathise. I can't count the number of occasions I've wanted the ground to open up & swallow me. And him. Thankfully at 20 he is now relatively civilised.

FD for me today.

skippy84 · 18/07/2014 10:53

Well after my great milestones yesterday I went on an unmerciful sugar binge last night and ended up about 800 cals over TDEE. Sigh. Going to try and pull it back over the weekend and hopefully with two fast days and a mini fast next week I won't see too much damage on the scales. Just frustrating though. Has anyone got any post binge tips? I'm away for the weekend so it's going to be tough to control my calorie content in meals etc.

meadowquark · 18/07/2014 12:01

skippy that must have been your celebration for your 2st weight loss :) My post binge advice - drop the binge guilt before it eats you.

Anyone else is shattered by the plane crash? I cannot shake the feeling of irritation and want, want, want to comfort eat, just cannot think of anything better than eating, how sad is this. Thankfully my lunch break is soon so perhaps a little sunshine will help.

Bollard · 18/07/2014 13:31

Livelab - I could have written your post Grin. My 9 year old is such hard work, and try as I might to anticipate and avoid flashpoints, I invariably fail. My 6 year old is much easier. I'm nervous about fasting during the hols, too.
Meadow - I'm doing a 3rd FD too.
Skippy - I agree, move on from the sugar binge! And well done Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 18/07/2014 13:37

It happens to everyone, Skippy Don't beat yourself up. Move on and deal with it, by having a Monday FD.

Main tip: avoid doubling the problems on your weekend away.
Keep within TDEE, preferably below, then have Monday FD.

Suggested weekend tactics:

  • NO snacks. They make you hungrier and bought ones are calorie bombs.
. No alcohol . If eating out for a big meal, make that your only meal of the day . Can you do "Fast 5" = eat only within a 5-hr window. Allows 2 meals. . If you socially have to eat 3 meals, then each meal is 1 plateful with lots of veg, no 2nd helpings, no pudding.
OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 18/07/2014 13:45

Anyone who has the munchies / eating for emotional reasons or boredom:

. Drink a pint of ice cold water
. Go for a brisk walk or run outside
. If you can't get outside, go up and down the stairs, or walk around the building
. Have a game with the DCs or take them out somewhere fun
. Go to the clothes shops and look at the skinny clothes you plan to buy later - which will be even later if you succumb
. Have a non-food reward: nails, makeup, new music, new book, magazine ...

The main idea is - keep busy
Hang in there everyone.

OP posts:
meadowquark · 18/07/2014 16:19

I already failed my FD. Probably will end up around 1300-1400kcal. For some reason, I feel good and don't feel a failure. That chocolate must have helped :)

Breadandwine · 18/07/2014 19:18

For all you harassed mums out there [respect], maybe there's some mileage in this idea Grin

Sort of a time-out writ large!

About combatting the munchies, a kitchen timer is your best friend, here!

You think you want another bite? Set the timer for 20 minutes to see if you really do (works with kids, too!)

MrsFlorrick · 18/07/2014 19:47

Breadandwine. GrinGrin That's hilarious. I very much doubt I'd get any takers for mine. Wink
To be fair they were pretty good today. Too hot to be naughty according to 3yo DS.

DramaAlpaca · 18/07/2014 21:35

I considered offering my 16 year old DS on that thread, but didn't think there'd be any takers. He never stops eating because he's growing like a weed so he costs me a fortune, and he is so difficult to get out of bed he's practically nocturnal. Love him to bits, though Grin

FD has gone well. I made a big vat of vegetable and mixed bean soup the other day so I had that for lunch and it kept me feeling full all afternoon. I worked out the calories on MFP and it's only about 150 for a generous bowl Smile

Dinner was grilled salmon, with lots of veg, prepared by DH so no effort for me. I started Week 2 of C25K on the treadmill this evening, so I'm feeling quite virtuous.

I stupidly made the mistake of deciding to weigh myself this evening. I know, wrong time of day... Bastard scales said I'd put on 4lb since last week Shock. I can't see how!!! I will weigh myself again in the morning.

livelablove · 18/07/2014 22:10

Yes drama definitely weigh in the morning. Not sure how you can lose weight over night but it seems you do.

How many calories do you think would be in a burger from my school BBQ? It was a large burger but not very thick in a large bun with a slice of cheese and fried onions. I think quite a lot... But I was good and have just drunk water no Pepsi.

Breadandwine · 19/07/2014 00:46

Here's another link that should tickle your funny bone!

5 (specious) ways IF is bad for us!

The giveaway is that the author is a nutritionist. They obviously realise they're a threatened species if we all took up this WOL.

And the last comment under the piece absolutely nails it! Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2014 06:52

Breadandwine The paper he claims is critical of IF is a paper on ADF by Varady et al in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
It details human and animal trials, basically concluding that ADF is either protective or neutral for the various health risks examined
Did he read / understand this paper ?
Confused
Also, he claims some of his clients gained weight and the paper agrees this can happen - when the subjects eat 2x TDEE on NFDs !
That's an overall weekly calorie surplus, so why would anyone be surprised they gain ?

(Note: that's why I am always wary when people choose to ADF because they binge on NFDs and don't want to control those)

The 2nd paper he references studied eating one TDEE meal per day, so no calorie deficit. Body fat and cortisol were reduced, but blood pressure and cholesterol increased.

So, this particular study is basically saying ADF may possibly not be good for maintenance. However, many other studies by Johnson et al have found health improvements on longterm ADF maintenance.

Note: on these threads, we recommend 5:2 / 6:1 or Varady's mini-FD maintenance, not full ADF.

Ooooh I fall off mumsnet for a week and we're still on the same thread. Is everyone on holiday?

b&w I've been over relying on coffee for years, its certainly not gotten worse thanks to IF Wink. Fasting has never left me famished though I could dive into a pizza and sundae on a non fast day Blush
