Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 46: Wild about Satan's Whizz (Diet Coke) ? Lazy Low Carbers, Pissed-off Piscatorians, Voracious Vegans, Ferocious Flexitarians,....... IF/5:2 can help you lose weight healthily.

The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Just checking in.

No FD for me today, my tickle at the back of my throat has turned into a cold and sore throat. Instead, I'm spending the day referreeing the fights between my DS's and feeling sorry for myself.

May attempt a FD later in the week, depending how I'm feeling. Annoyed at not being able to exercise - I'm slipping behind in my Shred!

Good luck to all fasters today!

DramaAlpaca · 10/07/2014 12:02

Also just checking in.

Doing my second FD of the week today instead of tomorrow.

I'm not good at name-checking on threads so please forgive me for just dipping in & out every so often & reporting on how I'm doing. It's helping to keep me focused.

I just want to say that I am finding this thread very inspirational & I am enjoying hearing about how everyone is doing. I'm picking up lots of useful hints & tips, which is great.

TalkinPeace · 10/07/2014 12:40

Ye gods I've missed half a thread
have not fasted properly for weeks but have been so ill with stress that I lost four pounds
tee hee

Boleh · 10/07/2014 14:06

Hi folks. Sorry I've been off here for ages, gaining and loosing the same 2lbs and getting increasingly irritated! Blush I'm making a real effort to better control my NFDs and get back to more regular exercise so crossing my fingers that tomorrow the scales will show it!

I can't possibly catch up with everyone - sorry but trilby1 you are the same height as me and 4lb lighter than when I started in Jan, I'm now 10 st ish (dammit, I will see 9 something on the scales soon!) - my progress was a pretty constant 2lbs a week until the recent plateau - I hope you find it as successful as I have Smile.

TiP sorry to hear you've been ill, weight loss is usually good but that's definitely not the way you want to achieve it! I hope the cause of stress has been removed or reduced and you are feeling better.

To everyone else, congrats on SVs and NSVs and remember, you can have it tomorrow! Smile

livelablove · 10/07/2014 15:48

Half way through my fast day, a bit hard going till dinner. Luckily this morning went well as I was busy with work and went to see dds talent show. She wasn't in it but fun seeing all the yr 5s perform. I am holding out that last hour till dinner. Maybe another cup of tea will help.

ditsygal · 10/07/2014 17:18

THanks for the advice on a mini FD instead of dong 4:3. I'll go with your advice and do a mini FD tomorrow. I did succesful FD's on mon and wed, but its seemed hard this week and NFD's have been high calorie wise. So I am going to promise myself to MFP all of my NFD's properly next week.

I am 8 weeks in and my weight loss has really slowed - usually the morning after a FD I would always see a loss that would then gain some of that again on NFD's but this week even the morning after my FD's I am not seeing any loss at all. I am at 13lbs in 8 weeks which I am really pleased with, but hope I can carry on losing as at 12.3lbs at 5ft7 I still have 11lbs to go to even be in the healthy BMI category.

livelablove · 10/07/2014 17:34

Hi ditsygirl sounds like you are doing really well. Mfping your NFD sounds like a good idea. Then if you are still having problems, but not sure why someone from here could advise. Do you do any exercise. There is a lot of good advice on here about that too. Maybe it would help to increase your activity levels a bit.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/07/2014 17:49

Tip Very sorry to hear you've been so stressed. That's terrible.
I do hope it's just too much work (and income) rather than problems.
Now it's time to chill: do some yoga, eat at a really good restaurant and pamper yourself.

Very nice, will be making again!

Hope you're feeling better TIP.

livelablove · 10/07/2014 19:51

Those look really nice melanie can I ask how much your kit cost?

BetsyBell · 10/07/2014 20:02

Hi trillby - you're clearly going for it! My impression is you have too many low calorie days in a row so I would say you could eat more today. As it's your first week I can you're trying to kickstart things, but try and make next week's less mini and more 5:2 if you can :)

Are you doing 16:8 because you aren't naturally a breakfast person?

As you've lurked a long time I'm sure you've read here that it's important to make a contrast between fast and non fast days. A fast day surrounded by lots of low calorie days might make your body think it's got to start holding on to every calorie rather than burning them off with abandon so might be counter-productive in the long run.

Feel free to bung a feast day (ie go over TDEE) in at the weekend - you've created a big calorie deficit already and slow and steady is a better way of losing weight.

Enjoy the flower show!

BetsyBell · 10/07/2014 20:10

Boleh Have patience, it might take time but it will go. Your body is recalibrating itself to your new weight. I recommend putting away the scales for a while, get some exercise going on and carry on with 5:2 as normal, without stressing about the numbers. It works.

Mazzle Oh I know that post-sugar headache only too well! Horrible. I've done really well and still not touched anything beyond fresh fruit for sugar content. I've even stopped my dried fruit habit which in turn seems to have curbed my massive nut consumption.

I have had to drop my Thursday fast though as I'm not eating enough without the extras, but not feeling compelled to either. Just goes to show how those simple carbs drive our appetite.

Bimblepops · 10/07/2014 20:20

Completely misread that, molly, was thinking way TMI about your rashy arse cheeks! The perils of skim-reading. Hope your STOMACH gets better soon.

Am having an evening of undoing all my good work. Had to put my cat to sleep this afternoon, plus have a stinking cold and am on my period. I am having wine and takeaway and I am NOT going to feel guilty about it. Possibly the output of tears and snot might even out the food and wine, but it's unlikely.

Will probably check in again in a couple of days...

BetsyBell · 10/07/2014 20:52

(((((((( bimble )))))) No guilt, wine and takeaway sound sensible and appropriate.

livelablove · 10/07/2014 20:54

Aw humble sorry to hear that, you def need an evening off Thanks

livelablove · 10/07/2014 20:55

*Bimble not humble

Bimblepops · 10/07/2014 21:46

You're a lovely bunch, thank you.

Popping back to report a totally random NSV...first Indian takeaway in months, attempted to have a slightly-smaller-than-regular serving and simply could NOT eat it all. Only managed about 3/4 and that was me being a pig.

Love to you all.

Labracadabra · 10/07/2014 21:49

I would just like to say I am always happy to visit this thread and see so many helpful and supportive posts. It really does feel like a great community we have here. I've never met any of you but you feel like friends. Thanks to everyone, long may it continue!

BigChocFrenzy · 10/07/2014 22:17

((({Bimble }))) So sorry about your cat. Do give yourself time to grieve; that pet was part of your family and shared a good life with you.

With your cold and totm, have the night off and just try to eat within TDEE the next few days

BigChocFrenzy · 10/07/2014 22:23

Welcome Trilby, Fraggle Hope you nailed your mini-FD / FD respectively
Smile
Trilby Your Monday-Thursday was all low cal days, but only 1FD.
That's ok for week 1, but try to plan your next week in advance, say like this:
. 2 x 500 FDs, non-consecutive is easier
. 3 x goal TDEE
. 2 x TDEE

Skippy, Chopsie Yes, aim for 600-700 cal FDs if you find 500 is too difficult. You may find you can go to 500 in a few weeks.
Skippy with your high TDEE, sub-700 is still a good deficit.

Ditsy It's normal for weight loss to slow down after several weeks. tou've lost the "easier" fat and your body is adjusting to its new weight.
Recalculate for your goal TDEE and for the next week, mfp your NFDs, to check you are within this.

Boleh Your plateau probably means you also need to be strict on NFDs, same remedy: mfp to goal TDEE.

Oh my I have had a really good fast day today! Just ate my dinner and it was only about 300cals and some milk in my coffees. I don't really feel like eating more so going to stick to that. I hardly felt hungry at all, just that hour before dinner and I had plenty of energy, I felt good. Going to bed soon before I can be tempted to eat anything.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/07/2014 00:27

livelablove · 11/07/2014 07:07

Yay the midwife that is great! I am happy too I have lost 3.5lbs this week just edging under the stone mark. MFP only takes full lbs though so I rounded it up to 3lb on there. Either way its great.
