The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Thanks betsy and bigchoc, first day went fine, although the evening got a bit tough....need some distraction in the evenings, I think! And I now have a very long piece of string that's currently my waistline (!) dangling from the fridge - hopefully that will have shrinkage marks on it soon :-)

BigChocFrenzy · 08/07/2014 07:36

Welcome, Gruffalo Well done on your loss so far
Smile
A mini-fast has up to 1000 cals total for the day.
You may split this into however many meals your prefer. If you have a social occasion on say lunch or supper, it is easiest to make this your only meal of the day.

For weight loss, the total number of calories is dominant, so you can achieve the deficit via mini-fasts instead of an FD.
For a TDEE of at least 1500, 2 mini-fasts produce a deficit of at least 1000 cal, the same as one FD.
If your TDEE is below 1500, the deficit (if you eat the full 1000 cals each) is less than from an FD, but for just one week don't worry.

OP posts:
livelablove · 08/07/2014 08:45

Well done all successful FDers from yesterday and good luck all fasting today.
Just ate my breakfast after yesterday's fast and enjoyed it! I love breakfast, but strangely it is easy to skip it on a FD.

meadowquark · 08/07/2014 09:22

Good morning all. Sorry for moaning and disappearing yesterday, and thanks to everyone who lisstened to me. My FD yesterday was not successful. It finished just under 1000kcal, plus I had a bottle of diet pepsi which I don't like fundamentaly so feel bad about it.

Generally my mood is not the best. May be that my marriage on the verge of breaking down. Financial crunch is ahead. But I still want to indulge on my frappe latte every morning (which I can barely afford). And I just overspent on new size 18 clothes - I had been hoping not to have to buy size 18 clothes anymore, but I had nothing to wear and I am still the same in size.

I will try easy this week. Maybe lots of mini FDs instead of 2 FDs. No matter how hard and discouraging sometimes, I have got to stick to it.

livelablove · 08/07/2014 09:42

Sorry to hear that Meadow. I think when you have a lot of stress in your life it is so much harder to control your eating, especially if you are a comfort eater, like me.

Baloostika · 08/07/2014 11:09

Your will power is made of steel Live.
Meadow this is just a phase in ur life that will pass, be positive, worry has never done anyone any good nor does it change situations so why worry (((hugs))).
Had d successfullest (lol) FD ever yesterday , I'm still wondering why cos I wasn't hungry at all.
Exercise for the day Is done and now at work, brunch will be sweet potato, fried Grin and multiple mugs of Brew green tea and coffees.
How effective is d eliptical machine for overall exercise? I need to know cos my knees can't take running or sprints, all I can do is slow jogs.
Happy fasting to Tuesday fasters, it is doable. Thanks

MazzleDazzle · 08/07/2014 11:25

{{{Meadow}}}. You're having a tough time just now Thanks. Try not to be too hard on yourself. 1000 cals is a great achievement, perhaps not the 500 cals you had hoped, but still a big chunk towards your weekly deficit. As for the Diet Pepsi, there's a time and a place for Satan's Whizz and sometimes nothing else will do Smile.

Well, I had a great bit of news this morning...I have now reached the illusive 2.5 stone mark! In fact, I'm half a pound over! And it's not even the day after a FD! Hurrah! Hurrah! Yippee! Arreeeeba areeeeba! Finally! Next stop, wedding dress weight!

DramaAlpaca · 08/07/2014 11:44

I'm on a FD today, my third Smile

Going OK so far.

So far I like this WOE. I'm still too scared to weigh/measure myself, but I can tell my clothes are looser. I have tightened the belt on my jeans by one notch!!! That is despite being stupid with wine & snacks on Saturday night and last Thursday, but I'm trying to forget about that

BigChocFrenzy · 08/07/2014 12:26

(({ hugs })) to Meadow So sorry to hear what you are going through.
Trying to lose weight or ramp up exercise is very difficult when there is so much extra stress in your life.

Under such high-stress conditions, I suggest you try ADF with 1000-cal FDs.
Just lock up the scales and accept that a slow loss is a major achievement at such a rotten time.

Post whenever you need comfort or just to vent. Someone's usually around.

btw:I have no shame in Gulping Satan's Whizz when only His Nastiness will hit the spot. Much better than drowning your sorrows in alcohol.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 08/07/2014 12:29

Well done, Drama Loose clothes mean losing fat.
No need to weigh. You can just go by clothes sizes and enjoy it when your old fat clothes fall down Smile

Congratulations, Mazzle Flowers Grin
Great SV !!
Wow, 35 lb

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 08/07/2014 12:39

Well done on an excellent 1st FD, Bexie
I love that piece of string on your fridge Grin Much better than scales
(Also, if ever you feel tempted to dive too deeply into its contents, wrap the string around yourself as a reminder)

Drama You could try the same method to monitor your loss.
Q: How long is a piece of string ?
A: Doesn't matter, so long as it's getting shorter

I'm sorry you are having such a hard time, Meadow. I hope that things get better soon.

meadowquark · 08/07/2014 13:55

Thank you everyne Thanks

BetsyBell · 08/07/2014 16:20

((((Meadowquark)))) You can moan here anytime - especially when you want to drown yourself in cake xxx

BetsyBell · 08/07/2014 16:22

Mazzle I like that a lot Grin

Chopsypie · 08/07/2014 16:44

Hi everyone, hope you are all doing okay.
I've not been on for a while, I wrote my weekend off completely with 2 takeaways and a wedding (was very drunk, over 2000 cals in alcohol alone!) so didn't do my usual MFP tracking.
But I have been eating well at all other times and keeping up with my exercise so i still lost weight. Total loss now 1 stone and 5lbs
Really starting to enjoy the running now which is a bonus and I can almost manage one full press up!

Baloostika · 08/07/2014 16:54

Congrats Mazzle tis true this WOE rocks!
Congrats on reaching ur goal weight Wine wish that was me Envy.
Your phrase about the diet Pepsi should be made a quote, indeed non else will do some times, it made me laugh so hard, lolzz.
Enjoy the rest of the day my friends Smile.

Bollard · 08/07/2014 18:32

Well done Mazzle!
Sorry things are so tough for you Meadow.

Good FD yesterday and I think I'm within TDEE today. I find it hard to count calories when I'm cooking without really weighing things carefully, but I went into dinner with 950 cals to spare and according to the rough guide on the recipe it was about 700 per serving, so I reckon I'm ok. I gained 1lb last week so I'm going to do 4:3 this week and try to see a loss (I get demotivated easily!).

BetsyBell · 08/07/2014 18:52

Hi gruffalo, yup, you can sub a fast day for a couple of mini 1000 cal days. You won't get the health benefits of a proper fast but you will get the calorie deficit so fine for helping towards those next few lbs! It's also fine to just miss a fast day and carry on as normal the next week. Or pop in an extra fast day when you can. This WOE is the definition of flexibility - one of the many reasons why it's so great Grin

Well done on your losses so far and keep us posted on how you make the holidays work for you. There's going to be plenty of us trying to make this work over the school hols soon!

BetsyBell · 08/07/2014 18:56

Oops, answering questions from way up thread Blush !

How's the non-sugar/booze going for those who've decided to do that thing? Taking the choice away has stopped me thinking about it - much like on a fast day when most things are out of bounds. I've even stopped shovelling down the dried fruit Shock so I think my body was ready to have a break.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/07/2014 19:14

My "no sugar report" for Betsy

I fell into a 250g jar of nut butter on Sunday and didn't climb out until it was finished. Ok, no sugar, but a calorie bomb !
Since then, puds have been fruit, lots of lovely cherries, melon, banana, kiwi.

As on NNN, I allowed myself a small shot glass of rice pud at the canteen Monday and today. That's better than my usual 3. Still, I'll make my own tonight with cinammon and Satan's Poo Crumbs (Splenda)

Also, tonight after XFit I really felt the munchies and it was only the "Just Say No" that helped me dodge the huge bowl of Kit-Kat, Mars etc that the gym always has enticingly by the water fountain Hmm
I initially felt sad with just a protein shake, but I now feel quite full.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 08/07/2014 19:26

oh and I'm adding nut butter to my list of forbidden things this month - too dangerous !

OP posts:
MollyBdenum · 08/07/2014 19:35

I realised this afternoon that I've been thoughtlessly chewing sugar free gum which is against the spirit of the challenge, so erm, oops. I won't do it again. Other than that, it's been fine.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/07/2014 19:54

Molly What do you mean ? I always allow sugar-free stuff, especially gum.
Um, your version is obv much healthier than mine ! Blush
