Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 46: Wild about Satan's Whizz (Diet Coke) ? Lazy Low Carbers, Pissed-off Piscatorians, Voracious Vegans, Ferocious Flexitarians,....... IF/5:2 can help you lose weight healthily.

The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

I have enjoyed a day of gluttony today at the Tour De France.

Baloostika · 06/07/2014 15:41

I'm thing of joining this challenge too Bigchoc. I'm going to date a 15 days spiritual fast and that can be an added stuff to give up, I don't drink that often anyways so I won't miss d booze.
I found I've been adding some sugar to my tea and coffees these days and I know I need to stop. I prefer sugar to any sweetener I know nothing about, in my opinion moderation is more important that eating stuff I I don't know.
Weight loss is about calorie deficits? If my sugar for tea fits into my daily calorie allowance should I be worried? I think it's about having a deficit at d end of the day, calorie in and out?
I don't really eat sugar but my guilty conscience won't let me be.
Smile

Baloostika · 06/07/2014 15:43

I eat clean most of the times by the way, every meal is cooked from scratch, nothing from a bag or tin.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/07/2014 16:07

Betsy Our "No Naughties November" (remember that !?) were what broke my Choc Frenzies. They haven't returned, but I like the idea of giving my bod a break from sugar, say 3 times per year.

Rice pud is my weakness - I'm lusting after that already, so I'll make some myself, with banana, stevia and cinammon.

I'm almost teatotal, so wouldn't have more than 1 glass until September, anyway.

Baloo Sounds like you have an unusually clean diet anyway. Don't worry about your bit of sugar in hot drinks.

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 06/07/2014 18:53

NNN sorted out your frenzies? BCF I'm not surprised but that's very cool. I think I end up doing 2 sets of sugar free per year. If I do a mini one now and another one after the household summer birthdays and hols then that should curb the sugar monster taking control. Sometimes it's just about making the conscious choice to say "no", and a brief ban does the job. As B&W has found out already!

The pre-Christmas one stopped me from over-doing it at Christmas - I'm pretty sure we carried on with weekday NNN all the way through to the festive season in the end.

So pre-empting seems to work... must remember that.

But the way I eat has changed so much - even my gluttonous week was barely that by pre-5:2 standards, and relatively few non-healthy foods. I just ate more than usual, and without letting myself get hungry first. Quite a lot more bread than usual - my old nemesis! But the good grainy sort rather than the simple carb crusty white.

I often have wine at the weekends but I'm happy enough not to for a couple of weeks. Like sugar, the more you have the more you crave it, but once you've got out of the habit it's easy to go without.

I used to drink a lot more but it doesn't mix with exercising the next day - and it turns out I prefer the healthy habit more than the vino one...

So tomorrow is back to running, TKD and fasting - YAY.

vvviola · 06/07/2014 21:13

I wasn't planning on fasting today as I have a long day at work and won't have much time to prepare something suitable for a FD and for the family once I get home.

But then I realised between work lunch meetings, imminent arrival of MIL, and friends coming around, Monday may be my only option for a good FD this week. (Although I may try to fast on Wednesday despite MIL being here).

So, fasting today and desperately hoping for inspiration on what I can throw together in 15 minutes for all of us (original plan had been crumbed fish pieces, oven chips and veg - my freezer emergency pack Grin)

MazzleDazzle · 06/07/2014 22:13

Haven't been on here in a while...Happy Belated Birthday BC! And thank you for the new (to me anyway!) thread. My favourite title to date Grin. Can't beat a bit of alliteration!

It's wonderful to see so many newbies on here! Welcome. This thread is invaluable.

I've been a busy bee. Returned to work 6 weeks ago and it has been a bit of a struggle. There's been far too much opportunity to eat and almost none to exercise. There aren't enough hours in the day! My youngest starts nursery after the summer though, so hopefully I'll have more time then.

Have been avoiding the scales since I haven't been eating mindfully and had only managed 1 FD per week. HOWEVER, when I finally braved them I was only up by a few pounds and we all know that a couple of decent FD will shift those. In fact, after yesterday's FD and coming in under TDEE today, most of it has gone already!

I completely agree with Betsy: "the way I eat has changed so much - even my gluttonous week was barely that by pre-5:2 standards". Even when my eating isn't as it should be, it is still miles better than it was. My old eating habits are almost alien to me now.

I have a wedding on Friday and a dress to fit into, so I am trying to eat well this week. I'm aiming for 6 days of no sugar or alcohol, so will join you abstainers for a wee while. Also, back to HIIT class tomorrow after 2 weeks of no exercise...really looking forward to it!

Good luck to all the Monday fasters tomorrow!

Bimblepops · 06/07/2014 22:37

Welcome back, Mazzle and well done, Molly! You've pushed me to stop being scared and go and measure myself, so that I can properly track my changing body.

No proper FD for me tomorrow, as we're all off to watch the Tour de France at a pub doing a hog roast and a BBQ. Will be doing 16:8 though and aiming for a mini-FD. Try to get two FD's in this week, but might end up being one proper FD and two mini-FD's. Will also be continuing to Shred and getting back into an abs routine - loving having a strong core at the moment!

Going to have to work out how to manage FD's whilst the kids are on holidays and we're out and about doing stuff. This is where I've always fallen down in the past.

livelablove · 06/07/2014 23:07

I am a bit worried about fasting during the summer hols too bimble I really want to keep going though.

I tried to eat to TDEE today. Not sure about some of the bits I ate while cooking dinner, but I had a bit less yesterday so hopefully it will balance out. Feeling a bit scared by tomorrow FD right now.

postmanpatscat · 07/07/2014 00:10

2 FDs this week and 1kg lighter, hurrah! Note to self: do not attempt 14km run the day after a fast day without eating anything.

Well done molly but I'm sure you've got your waist measurement wrong?

bigchoc I've already done 3 weeks of no sugar (including no fruit) and have two weeks to go as I'm aiming for the end of term on Fri 18th. Then I will enjoy every mouthful of the end of term chocs I am sure to be given...

BexieP · 07/07/2014 08:56

Right. I am starting today. 16 st 11lb is shocking, but I am feeling so motivated after spending all weekend reading your brilliant threads! A carafe of water is on my desk, along with peppermint tea....let's go for it! Grin

Trenzalor · 07/07/2014 08:58

First week = 4lbs off with two FD and four TDEEs (best not to ask about yesterday). Decided to start the week with a FD as I could feel myself slipping yesterday.
Hope everyone's week has started well.

MelanieCheeks · 07/07/2014 09:30

Morning all.

sips Oxo drink

ThePowerOfMe · 07/07/2014 09:31

Well done Trenzalor

Mini fast day for me today. I'm going to focus on upping my water today as I keep forgetting to drink lots.
I bought a butternut squash yesterday and will make a butternut squash and chickpea curry.
It's my favourite meal for when I need to keep the calories low. I could actually eat it every day.

BetsyBell · 07/07/2014 09:33

Welcome BexieP! Have you taken measurements for NSVs? Very important :)

Started my fast day with a sunny 5k and now coffee. Feeling great Grin

meadowquark · 07/07/2014 10:09

Good morning all. Reluctant FD today. I was really discouraged after my weight gain last week and spent Fri-Sun eating like there was no more food in the world. So this week is completely spoiled and there will be another weigh in disappointment. I have been trying to be good but the weight loss is just too slow, less than 6lbs in the last 8 weeks. I have been reading about 2,3,4 lbs loss a week for most of you, guys, and just wondering why this can't be happening to me?

Just had my Frappe Latte for breakfast. It will be good if I make it today but if not, I am not sure if I care. I am loosing my focus.

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 07/07/2014 10:34

Aww meadow i can understand the frustration, there's nothing worse than repeatedly staying the same or gaining Angry

But you are losing, and you must have noticed NSVs! Have you written them down? And what's the alternative, gaining weight every week? You know you need to change your habits and gradually you're doing that, but giving up will put you back at square one: unhealthy.

You can do this, you deserve it, keep it up, stay with us - we'll all in it together!

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 07/07/2014 10:42

I used to be envious of those in time zones ahead, now i am one and just 4.5 hours from the official end of the FD (unless i snap after 22:00.... but it's less likely)

I wish i could get sweeteners here, sugar in my FD coffee increases calories by 30 Sad

Baking bread today, which will be sad once it's made, not being able to try a piece. Oh well, it'll all be worth it in the morn.

I have started the infamous 30 day shred, not tried anything like this in the past, I'm generally a runner and do a few weights at home. it is hard! I had two days on, one day off, and I'll see how many consecutive days i can do this week. Feels like i pulled a muscle in my arm today though, ouchhhhhhhh!

Good luck to all fasting, DRINK water!!! Keep busy!

skippy84 · 07/07/2014 11:19

Hi Everyone, I'm hoping to join you on this thread. Have been healthy eating with MFP for about 6 weeks, have lost 20 lbs but another 40 or so to go and its starting to slow a bit so I'm going to try out the 5:2 to try and keep loosing consistently at around 2lbs per week. Doing my first fast day today and feeling fine so far. Have brought a chickpea curry soup for lunch and have a mexican chicken casserole for this evening.

Baloostika · 07/07/2014 11:45

When I say sugar free, what does it include?
Hope fruits are not included.
Hang on Meadow, I've stopped looking at d scale a looooooong time ago, I focus in how I'm getting and looking smaller and that's all that matters. Thanks
Welcome to all d newbies and believe me when I say this WOE works. Just drink knots of water and Brew on FD and it will make things easier.
FD today, gym session done. I'm doing the sugar challenge along with Bigchoc and co, I'm including no diary too and taking out rice also, this should aid some weight movement along wit d health benefits.
Happy fasting peeps.
Smile

womblesofwestminster · 07/07/2014 12:26

Hi dudes. Haven't popped in for a while. I've missed you guys. Nice to see Mazzle and BigChoc still doing the rounds :)

I'm so close to my target weight now! Yepeee!

MollyBdenum · 07/07/2014 13:02

I'm interpreting no sugar as meaning no redo ed sugar, but fruit is ok. I'll avoid dried fruit, but I don't really eat dried fruit anyway. I am going to cheat by eating sriracha, because I love hot sauce fix and I only eat tiny amounts.

livelablove · 07/07/2014 13:46

Don't give up meadow, you do sometimes gets plateau when losing weight. It just means you need to tweak what you are eating a bit until you work out why you aren't losing. Have you thought of trying the no sugar challenge for a couple of weeks, that might get things moving and it is very healthy!

I am half way through my FD. I find it a bit hard after getting home from work, but just relaxing with a coffee until dd gets home from school.

livelablove · 07/07/2014 13:51

Baloo I did cut out sugar once but allowed fresh fruit and I lost some weight even though I wasn't trying to, and I snacked on carby things like bread. Also I felt good that way. So I think it is still quite a good reduction in sugar levels if you allow fruit.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/07/2014 14:31

Welcome Bexie. Lots of friendly support and advice here.
Several maintainers have lost a lot of weight. If you haven't read the Inspirations thread yet, you'll find lots of motivation from the lovely stories there.

Well done, Trenzalor You've had a good first week. Most folk have to watch the NFDs, especially at first.

Good for you Postman

Everyone doing fasted training:
The day after an FD you are running on empty, especially if you've also done fasted training on the FD.
If you want to train mornings, I recommend at least a protein shake beforehand.
Most important: Have a meal within 30-60 mins after training. Maybe a shake & fruit right after, then a meal of protein, veg and complex carbs when you get home.

Welcome back, Mazzle I'm sure you'll look glam at the wedding.
You'll probably find you have a lot of energy in the gym after your break, but get back to HIIT tonight !

Tour de France sounds exciting Molly. How long are you staying there ?
Are you following the route (by car) ?
