Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 46: Wild about Satan's Whizz (Diet Coke) ? Lazy Low Carbers, Pissed-off Piscatorians, Voracious Vegans, Ferocious Flexitarians,....... IF/5:2 can help you lose weight healthily.

The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

So bad but so good...

BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2014 22:23

Those are important NSVs, Bimble
You are losing fat but increasing muscle, which is great for your health and also for your shape - muscle has less volume than the same weight of fat.
Enjoy the compliments, you've earned them !

BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2014 22:39

Interesting pictures of umpteen people Here
If you hover over / click a picture, it gives height and BMI, plus whether the person is overweight, normal, underweight, obese or morbidly obese.

Many of the overweight ones look "normal" to most folk, showing how our sense of body size has become distorted.

OP posts:
Bimblepops · 01/07/2014 22:39

I know, BigChoc, thank you, but it's just so frustrating. I am beyond fed up with being 2st overweight...

Oh well, onwards and upwards!

MollyBdenum · 01/07/2014 22:59

I think that it also shows the inadequacy of BMI -Suzanne on p2 is a similar height and weight to me, but she clearly has a lot less body fat than I do. Which is a good reason to trust the tape measure more than the scales

thinkcan · 02/07/2014 06:01

BigChoc you are so right about not being able to old eating habits. My problem is we are based in a lovely part of Indonesia and every time I have house guests (which is rather often) it's impossible for me to stick to my diet when I am showcasing the best eateries in town. Plus I go back to my home country (Malaysia) almost every month and each trip home is reason to partake of all the fabulous tastes of home. On top of that, visitor time and home travel time means all exercise comes to a stop and it's going through the pain of regaining the lost fitness and strength every time I am back to my routine. I know it's all excuses but this has been the story of my life for the last 9 years as we moved through Singapore, Vietnam and now Indonesia. I need to get out of this vicious cycle. Any suggestions or kick me in the butt advice?

Labracadabra · 02/07/2014 06:25

BCF those photos are really interesting. I agree that our sense of what is normal vs overweight has become distorted (with pets too!). However, if one was to comment on one of the "overweight" photos in real life people would leap in saying she's not overweight, she's a normal healthy shaped woman etc etc. well, it might be "normal" (i.e. average) for nowadays but it doesn't mean it's right for health. It's difficult to manage the distorted body images the media present with healthy body weights. I was watching a programme last night which was about shopgirls in the 1920s and 30s and in the footage it was very interesting to see that there were no fat people at all. Not the working classes anyway!

BetsyBell · 02/07/2014 09:06

Those photos are interesting BCF - I'm pretty sure the collection is designed to show the inadequacy of BMI measurements, which is true in the case of the muscular of course, but I think it does have more bearing on what we now consider 'normal'. I know that I always 'wore my over-weightness well' like many of those in the images. labra you only have to go back to the 70s - most footage and photos of that era show everyone looking really skinny, but of course that was normal. It's a shame that the shops vanity size, lulls us into a false sense of slenderness.

What we do have, compared to past eras, is the opportunity of choice to eat incredibly well all year round if we want to. It's all out there, use your TDEE calories wisely and make nutritious choices 90% of the time and you will be doing great things for the health of your body. We live in a fortunate time in that respect.

Shop and eat wisely and mindfully. If you make a choice that's less than brilliant for you body, then acknowledge it is crap but savour every mouthful and don't buy multipacks! If you only have one to hand then you can only eat one.

Tired and feeling a little sorry for myself last night, I could have eaten a tonne of crap, but luckily the worst I could forage up in the house was a pack of smarties (vile). The rest of my 'binge' was a couple of spoons of Whole Earth peanut butter, fruit yogurt with a bit of granola, prunes and a real hot chocolate.

livelablove · 02/07/2014 09:41

Having been very overweight for years, I'd be more than happy to look average. My big dream is to be able to easily find clothes in the highstreet. I don't care if they are size 14 looks wise. I would love to be able to buy a pair of average wellies.

Improving my health is a big motivation for losing weight too though and for that reason my ideal target weight would be in the healthy range.
About maintaining, I know it is a long way off, but I can see how being aware of your TDEE on NFD will help a lot with this. Obviously when maintaining you will probably have days where you go over it and a weekly fast will keep that under control. But by the time you have lost the weight you should have a better idea what a normal days food should be.
thinkcan your life sounds so idyllic! I know far eastern food can be very low in calories though, if you pick the right things.
It is a NFD for me today, but it is my anniversary and we are planning a steak dinner, followed by a chocolate trifle and I have a box of posh chocs here too. But I think I can fit it all in if I skip lunch and just have a piece of fruit and no snacks.I did have some toast for breakfast, but I think I will be ok. Later I will try to work out how many calories are in the dinner more exactly.

BetsyBell · 02/07/2014 09:48

Livelablove In my experience success lies in making small, positive changes permanently. Being aware of what you eat is step 1 - keeping a food diary or using MFP can help with this and help you realise what a normal eating day should look like. That in turn will lead to other changes and help you learn good, sustainable habits that will lead to better health.

Babysteps is the key word. Often, changing too much at once makes us feel like failures and we revert back to old, bad habits and pile weight back on.

5:2 is a great facilitator to learning good habits.

postmanpatscat · 02/07/2014 09:52

Fast day for me today, haven't done one for a few weeks. I gave up sugar 17 days ago, which is going really well. I'm holding out til the end of term (18 July) with one exception, which will be the weekend before that as we are celebrating DP's 50th birthday and there's no way I'm missing out on the cake I've ordered for him.

Since I started, I've been keeping pretty close to TDEE and have lost 700g in two and a half weeks, but am also 600g heavier today than I was on Saturday morning! What's all that about?! Thought I'd have a fast day to keep my body guessing. I'd like to lose another kg to get back to my normal maintenance range.

BCF interesting pics. I've barely any photos of my summer hol last year as they are all on either DP's camera or DD's camera, and I've given up asking them to email them to me because it just isn't happening. I do remember though that some of the pictures are less than flattering and would put me firmly in the 'underweight' category based on appearance alone, even though my BMI is always 19 something. Flesh just doesn't linger around my ribs, shoulders and collarbones and I think in 40 years time I'll be a really scrawny looking old lady!

I agree that some of those that looked 'normal' to me came up as overweight.

Really interesting video: cereal killers which is free to watch until Friday. Turns that food pyramid on its head!

SunshineofRay · 02/07/2014 09:59

Well should've been a FD today but had a really stressful day yesterday and didn't eat well so didn't want to struggle today, shall move it to tomorrow instead

bigchoc is there a correlation between stress/high blood pressure and difficulty in exercising?
I've been doing really well with c25k, 2ndrun on week 2 today and I really struggled, I couldn't catch my breath at all and had a knot in my Stomach the whole time . Just wondered if the 2 might be related

ThePowerOfMe · 02/07/2014 10:16

I'm so tired. Hardly any sleep again.
Any tips on how to get through the day? I want it to be a fd but can feel myself weakening already.

BetsyBell · 02/07/2014 11:45

sunshine I don't know about any correlations but I do know, even as a now experienced runner, that some days it just feels like running through soup even though the previous run was amazing. Don't be put off though! I'm sure your next run will be fantastic. I'm such a fan of C25k as it got me running, well done for going for it :)

powerofme why not make it a 16:8 or mini fast day. It's so hard to fast when exhausted. I hope you feel better tomorrow.

DramaAlpaca · 02/07/2014 12:02

Still really buzzing that I managed the FD yesterday Smile

Thought I'd wake up starving, but just felt normal. I didn't sleep very well last night, not sure why.

I want to start running again soon & plan to do that on NF days. I completed C25K last year but didn't carry on much further due to getting a nasty virus combined with pressure of work. I really regret not continuing with my running & I really want (and need) to get back into it. I'm collecting my new orthotics for my running shoes from my physio next week, so I'll have no excuse then.

Sunshine bad runs during C25K are normal, and you'll probably find the next one goes well. Something to do with your body/mind adjusting I think.

vvviola · 02/07/2014 12:20

Abandoned any plans of FD today because it's cold and miserable and I needed something substantial. But if I'm going to do any FD this week or for the next 3 months I'm going to need to come up with some comfort food options for FD pretty quick!

BigChocFrenzy · 02/07/2014 12:23

The waist measurement is so much more important than the scales.
BMI is a blunt tool, that does not consider body composition - % fat, % muscle.
We should aim to be within the healhy BMI range, but not obsess about being in the lower half of that range.
Also, for many people IF/5:2 reduces inches before weight, because it preserves muscle btwer than other WOEs.

Sunshine Stress and high blood pressure tend to deplete energy and can also affect endocrine / hormone system.
So, that can affect exercise performance.
Probably best to concentrate on shorter bursts of training, rather than long session.

idontlikealdi · 02/07/2014 12:32

I'm at the end of my first week and am now 14.6, I started at 14.11!

Just been to M&S for lunch and they have a new salad 'amazing avocado dipper', its just lettuce, carrot sticks, cherry toms and a dip and it comes in at 134 calories! That's my FD lunch for tomorrow sorted!

aquavit · 02/07/2014 14:07

wow this thread moves so fast...congrats on all these nice SVs and NSVs and hang in there to today's fasters.

FD for me today and jUst got back to the gym after work and being ill kept me out for a week. I was hoping to be really full of beans due to the enforced rest but crikey, it was actually really hard work! Got a good sweat on though Grin

Prawn salad for lunch (agAin) and planning quorn sausages and ratatouille for supper.

postmanpatscat my weight fluctuates like crazy, I do two things to try to keep myself sane about it: 1. Only weigh self once a week at exactly the same time/daY/after doing same things (I do Friday morning first thing) and 2. Take measurements - I have lost very little actual weight since starting 5:2 but a satisfying number of inches of waist and hips.

Bimblepops · 02/07/2014 14:10

Hi all,
Awful nights sleep thanks to my DC's. So decided to make today a 16:8 and fast tomorrow.
Have had a nice lunch - nothing unhealthy, and have also sorted out mine and DH's 80's/Club Tropicana costumes for a party on Saturday, so am happy.
Shred this evening and probably some abs work.

livelablove · 02/07/2014 14:17

Well done on giving up sugar postmanpatscat it is really hard. I did give it up for lent once and I managed to stick to it but I couldn't keep it up after the Easter Eggs had been eaten. I did feel better though and had more energy. There is a nice looking book in Asda called "I quit sugar for life" I had a flip through and it did include a homemade chocolates section using raw cacao which is supposed to be very healthy. I am not trying to give up sugar at the same time as starting 5:2 though but I am going to try to cut down a bit on NFD (except today!)
betsybell yes I can see babysteps can fit in with 5:2 well even though it is very strict on the FD on other days it is possible to eat very similar to my old woe as long as I dont go mad on cake which is my downfall, but I don't have to be eating unusual salads at every meal or something I am not used to. Then I will slowly try to improve the nutritional content of my diet a bit. I have already found some good recipes on here I might try. I must admit I thought I would hate calorie counting on NFD but it is not as bad as I thought, because the TDEE is higher than the amount you would eat on a normal reduced calorie diet so I don't feel deprived and I don't mind so much adding it up. I think I must have gone off counting calories when I was on a low calorie diet and struggling to stick to it.

ICanHearYou · 02/07/2014 14:45

fast day is going well, its nearly 3 and I've not eaten anything yet which means I can have a full slim fast shake for dinner and have enough calories to eat a little something because settling down for bed.

meadowquark · 02/07/2014 14:59

Hi all. I finished my NFD yesterday by meeting an old colleague and having three cocktails (two of them non-alcoholic, but loaded with cream) at a Mexican bar, then had to have 2 toasts and banana when I got home.

I woke up ridden with guilt this morning. Instinctively I decided to have mini FD today (1000kcal). I hope this will cancel out my yesterday...

Dotty342kids · 02/07/2014 15:01

Some lovely SVs on here in the last day or two, well done to you all!
FD for me tomorrow and it'll be a salmon / chickpea / spinach concoction for dinner. Yum. Just wish I could keep my NFDs under control Grin

Baloostika · 02/07/2014 16:37

Welcome to all the newbies Rosie and co and I like everyone's can - do spirit, that's the spirit of this WOE.
I've not weighed myself yet but I really won't be bothered by the number on d scale as I feel and look really good. Smile
Thanks BCF I will definitely try to take it easy Grin. I have been exerting most evenings instead of my usual mornings so I can get out of bed late and we'll rested.
Tomorrow is my 2nd FD of the week and I want to try evening exercise again to see how it goes cos the last time I did that I felt good and d day was not bad cos I had energy all afternoon due to no exercise in the morning.
Happy fasting guys.
