Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 46: Wild about Satan's Whizz (Diet Coke) ? Lazy Low Carbers, Pissed-off Piscatorians, Voracious Vegans, Ferocious Flexitarians,....... IF/5:2 can help you lose weight healthily.

The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

I'm in!

Baloostika · 30/06/2014 20:43

A very warm Brew welcome to all the newbies.
Had an NSV today, I exercised on a FD evening, doing heavy lifts and an aerobics class.
I'm back to exercising after a weeks break, feels good to be back as I missed it a great deal.

Not2bObvious · 30/06/2014 20:50

Total FD fail following shocking behaviour at weekend. That is all, as you were...

GlitterBallsRock · 30/06/2014 21:32

Clocking in another FD here. Just a piece of salm

GlitterBallsRock · 30/06/2014 21:35

Clocking in another FD here. Just a piece of salmon, boiled egg and salad for dinner. Have a few calories left so may have a 40 cal hot chocolate before bed!

Felt quite easy today and only 3 more fasts for me before holiday time! Would like to think I can do the odd fast whilst on holiday but not sure I will be able to manage it.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/06/2014 21:58

Holidays
You can just forget your weight over the hols or you can try to maintain.
Whatever suits YOU

Suggestions for Glitterballs (ignore if you want !):
. Have 2 days per week without alcohol
. On those days, eat only one meal, as big as you want, then stop.

OR try ADF (Alternate Day Fasting):
Alternate 800 cal FDs with eat-what-you-want days.
I did this over the Xmas hols and maintained ok.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 30/06/2014 21:59

That's modified ADF, btw, just for hols.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/06/2014 22:05

Welcome back to training, Baloo
Smile
Remember not to overdo exercise again, because you train very intensely. 60 mins per day is plenty on your 5 training days.

Have not posted in ages. Did well on this WOE last year getting down from 59 kg to a low of 53.4 kg. Life got in the way of dieting and exercising and am now back up to 57 kg. Would like to get down to 55 kg by the end July but am finding it sooo hard to get started again. Need your support!! For the record, I am 5ft 1 and 58 years old. I am back at the gym 3 times a week for an hour of weight training each time. I also just started walking or biking for an hour or so 3 times a week.

GlitterBallsRock · 01/07/2014 06:45

That's a good suggestion BigChoc. Pleased this morning as I have woken to a fab scale victory, another kilo off! Grin

That's 3 kilos in 7 weeks, which is great as I haven't been calorie counting on my NFDs (too lazy and I don't think I particularly overeat as I have been the same weight for years - just never managed to shift the weight I put on when pregnant).

I would love to lose another 2-3 kilos maybe more, will see where the 5:2 takes me. When I reach a weight I'm happy with I will maintain on 6:1.

nims1981 · 01/07/2014 07:50

Chopsie well done on SV
good luck dontbe with that weigh in
Christina what is oil pulling?
idontlike I thought I would find fasting on totm hard but haven't actually had one sine I started this woe in beginning of may. going to book doc today to see if he can send shed some light on it. I have lost my periods b4 but. want them back as I want another baby. sometime fairly soon.

meadowquark · 01/07/2014 09:12

Glitter well done with your SV!

oil pulling

Nothing feels better than a lose skirt after a FD! (that's how I feel this morning)

I am trying to fit extra 1000 kcal deficit this week somewhere between my Mon and Thu FDs.

Trenzalor · 01/07/2014 09:16

First ever FD. So far every automatic impulse to eat breakfast has been fired by boredom, not hunger - even though I can feel my stomach emptying.

almostthereagain · 01/07/2014 09:22

Well life has caught up with me, no big surprise!
Having shed 2lbs was maintaining well at 9.5 without proper fasts but am back up to 9.9 this amShock Am back to post hols weight when I should be heading for pre hols weightSad
Have a quieter couple of weeks so hoping to get back to it properly. Who's fasting today? I'm keeping busy cleaning as my house is in a bit of a state after several weeks of just managing to keep on top of laundry & feeding everyone. Trying to summon the enthusiasm, must not get distracted by coffee & surfing!

almostthereagain · 01/07/2014 09:23

Well done nims!! & everyone elseSmile

meadowquark · 01/07/2014 09:26

almost I am reading about your weight gain and also of others. That only shows how we are used to eating more. Or moving less? Food is all around us. It is a temptation, almost like a drug. It is hard to resist eating. In a way I wish I was living in the olden times when the choice was less, but local and organic and fresh.

DramaAlpaca · 01/07/2014 09:56

First FD today. I'm sipping a cup of tea at my desk & trying to ignore the hunger pangs having missed breakfast.

A quick question: is it OK to nibble on low calorie snacks like carrot sticks throughout the day to keep the hunger pangs at bay as long as I stick to the 500 calorie allowance, or do I need to try to hang on til lunchtime?

Oh, DH is going to do the 5:2 as well to support me Smile

almostthereagain · 01/07/2014 10:08

meadow I know what you mean, I watched the 50 diets programme last night, quite interesting, anyone see it?
Unfortunately I'm sure my gains have been largely alcohol. I have been v busy with work, had lots going on with family life & to add to the chaos I crashed my car! I have been managing to maintain by 16:8 but almost daily wine has slipped back in, I have not managed any proper fasts & there has been pasta, occasional take away & some cheese. Also exercise has taken a back burner as I have been starting work so early & then turning to a glass of wine at the end of the day. I was reassuring myself that all was ok & I could get back to it this week but have had a sudden 4lb gain! No matter, I have been going ages, know it works, life just got in the way AGAIN, hence my name Grin
drama if you can hold off you'll probably find it easier in the long run, people often find that eating wakesthe hunger! However, it's your first day, do what's right for you, carrot sticks are better than reaching for biscuits, good luckSmile

PhoneSexWithMalcolmTucker · 01/07/2014 10:10

Fasting today, going fine :) Did bokwa again last night and it was lots of fun.

NSV 1: I look and feel better in my clothes. DH agrees.

NSV 2: got into work this morning and my colleague said 'you've lost weight!'

Yambabe · 01/07/2014 10:22

Just popping in (still browse, don't post much as am doing OK mostly) to let you know that I did my month-end weigh-in this morning and despite missing a couple of FDs due to being trapped in Spain last week I have lost another 4lbs.

So nice and steady, feeling OK, not really struggling.

Nothing to see here, move along..........

rosieposey · 01/07/2014 10:25

Hello, I'm new and about to do my first FD today. I have a lot of weight to lose ( approx 8 stone ) and have been dieting for the last couple of weeks and lost 5.5 lbs - I could have done better but the thought of restricting calories every day made me binge unfortunately.

I would prefer to have a couple of days where I am focused on losing the weight and 5 where I can be a little more lax ( up to about 1800 ) which I can manage fine on. Its the idea of not being able to feel satiated on most days that I struggle with the odd day of hunger I am hoping I should be able to deal with.

Your 5.2 inspiration thread is great - especially eatriskier's stats - I'm using those as an inspiration and hopefully 8 stone wont feel like such a mountain to climb!

Well good luck to everybody on a fast day today and happy eating for those on a foodie day Smile I'll probably check in later and tell you all how it went.

DramaAlpaca · 01/07/2014 10:29

Thanks almostthereagain. I'm still hanging on in there!

idontlikealdi · 01/07/2014 11:34

Just checking in, after giving up on the FD yesterday, I came in at 1400 (TDEE is around 2,000) and am having a proper FD today and doing fine so far. I have strawberries and yogurt for lunch and quinoa and asparagus for dinner.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

vvviola · 01/07/2014 11:59

:( had a bit of a carb binge day today. Not sure why. Was doing ok (just toast and a bit of marmalade) until I got home from work and then couldn't pass a carb without eating it.

To the extent that I could barely eat the lovely roast chicken and mash I'd done for dinner.

Onward and upward though. FD again tomorrow to reset everything.

Which reminds me of a NSV from the weekend. DH and I went out for lunch and the theatre, and over lunch we were talking about 5:2. I realised that one of the best things about it is that I've had 6 weeks of weight loss I wouldn't have had any other way - because we've had so many events and busy periods at work, I would have kept saying "I'll start on Monday" or "I'll start after X event". 5:2 has meant I can just work around them in a way I haven't been able to before. Grin

Labracadabra · 01/07/2014 14:57

That's very true vviola! A very good point indeed.
