Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 45: Getting keen on quinoa, learning to love the lettuce and varying the veg - help and advice on improving our health and eating habits with 5:2 fasting.

BetsyBell · 30/05/2014 08:57

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Thanks everyone!

vvviola I do! I suffer from psoriasis! (Elbows, upper arms and legs). I haven't found fasting to have any effect on it. Eating a lot of dairy does however. Do you do that? What meds are you using?

BigChocFrenzy · 15/06/2014 13:56

Wombles The possible health benefits from fasting can only happen if you eat sufficient food on NFDs. Too high a weekly deficit over-stresses the body.

IIRC you've been doing ADF for several months, starting in 2013.
Several of us expressed concern whenever you reported how low calorie your NFDs were, especially with your high exercise levels.
You posted a few weeks ago that your periods had stopped and you felt exhausted. I do hope this is all better now.

Did you take a break from fasting, as everyone was advising ? We were quite worried about your health.

BetsyBell · 15/06/2014 14:11

Hi wombles You disappeared for a while after posting about your periods stopping.

Did you increase your eating on NFDs or take a break from fasting and/or the exercise as many of us advocated? We were very worried about you as your regime seemed extreme. It would be good if you had some positive feedback for us after all the problems.

A stone in 6 weeks is an awful lot for someone who really didn't have much to lose. Your BMI was very much normal to start with if I recall correctly. I remember a photo you put up and it seemed that you were already quite slim, though you didn't think so.

SquirrelledAway · 15/06/2014 14:18

vvviola my mum suffered psoriasis badly from ankle to knee for 30 years, and had tried everything. She finally tried royal jelly after a recommendation the Telegraph and it cleared completely within about 6 weeks, and has not returned. She started on one 500 mg capsule per day, but after 10 days her skin became itchy, so she dropped to one 200 mg capsule per day (and took an occasional 500 mg capsule instead to use them up). She does say that it doesn't work for everyone, and that you just need to be a bit careful if you're taking any other medication, but might be worth a shot?

MazzleDazzle · 15/06/2014 14:46

Happy Fathers' Day to B&W and any other blokes on this thread.

Sunday FD here as there's been a change to this weeks's routine; I have a work thing tomorrow where I will be expected to socialise over food. So far, so good. I've just fed DH and DC their lunch. Waiting until dinner before I eat - probably chicken, raw veg and low fat houmous. It's the only low fat product I buy as it has no added junk, just less oil.

Lovely to hear from Mrs F! Good news that FIL is past the worst, not so good about his driving charge. Perhaps it's for the best that he doesn't have a license, though my grandfather who is a similar age would balk at me saying that!

I'm seething at the 5:2 media backlash and the fast beach bullshit! Makes me Angry. Luckily for me BC and TiP are here to quash them Grin. Btw TiP, why the lack of exercise? Hope all is well. Haven't been on the thread properly in a while. I remember you used to swim like a fish.

Still plodding away here. 7 months I've been at it now! 2 stones and 4 lbs down. Hoping to reach the 2 and a half stone mark soon. realistically its probably going to be another month before I shift 3lb. It's all been a bit hectic since my return to work. I'm lucky if I can work out once or twice a week! Slowly getting there though, which is just the way it should be. This truly is a WOL. I have never been this slim and MAINTAINED IT. EVER. This is just me now.

Lots of NSVs to report...

  • being able to wear summer clothes (vests!) without looking indecent due to lumps and bumps hanging out everywhere,
  • finding that a posh coat that never fit, but was too expensive to chuck, finally buttons up,
  • eyeing up my muscles in the mirror ??

Enjoy your weekend folks! Good luck tomorrow to all the Monday fasters.

Eatriskier · 15/06/2014 16:32

I'm ignoring the backlash especially from the daily fail, especially considering they were pushing the bloody beach diet only a few weeks ago. Just the same as I largely ignore the pushing articles. I mean they can't sell advertising space in women's supplements if they find women are content now can they? Wink Wink Wink

postmanpatscat · 15/06/2014 17:09

Well done on your losses womble and araminta

MrsF glad you are through the worst of it.

mazzle love your NSVs!

I am not doing a great job of losing the 2kg I have gained, have focussed on report writing at the expense of running so have only run 20k over the last fortnight, 10k of that was this weekend! I think the problem is that as I am not tracking on MFP, I am overcompensating with my high sugar diet Blush on NFDs. So, as of today, I am aiming for little or no sugar and minimal processed food until the end of term. I did 16:8 today and will still fast weekly too.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/06/2014 17:17

Happy Fathers Day to BreadandWine and any other dads 5:2ing here

Re: Periods stopping They arrived the day after I made that thread BlushBlushBlush

It has almost been 4 weeks since then, so we'll see if they have returned back to normal. AF is due on Wednesday.

And I'm feeling great now despite never stopping ADF. Energy levels have shot up, I feel full of vitality (although I started taking a few extra vitamins, so may be that). This WOE has finally settled into a seldom-conscious easy routine.

MrsFlorrick · 15/06/2014 17:52

Sunshine. Dry skin brushing.

Having never had cellulite before I suddenly developed it last year (not genetic as no one else in the family has it or developed).

I did lots of dry skin brushing and lots of Bigchocs Big Girl Squats. And it's gone.

Can't explain how it works or why but it just did. It was so simple and so cheap. Just the cost of a dry skin brush (I think it was £7 from John Lewis).

Brush dry skin in upwards motions (towards the heart if brushing arms or other body parts). 5 mins to do legs and bum. I did it once a day. Some people do it twice.

You must do it every day. After bout 30 days or less you will see something akin to a miracle.

Apparently avoiding coffee and alcohol really helps it along (I didn't. Didn't drink more than one or two glasses of wine the first month but I mai lined coffee).

MrsFlorrick · 15/06/2014 18:04

Postmanpatscat. Thanks Thank you. It's been a rough 2014 so far.

DH is visiting PILs this weekend and he phoned me and told me that FIL is doing really great. So onwards and upwards.

Battling DS who is refusing to eat the lovely dinner I cooked AngryAngryAngry. I made a homemade meatball, tomato, mozzarella and focaccia bake.

DD ate it and announced it was delicious. I ate it (my portion without focaccia as its an FD for me) and it was yummy. DS said it was poo AngryAngryAngry. Now he is screaming because I won't give him homemade pear and blueberry crumble.

No dinner no crumble. But my ears and my brain really want me to give to make the screaming stop. Confused

BigChocFrenzy · 15/06/2014 18:21

Well done on the cellulite, MrsF.
Your dinner sounds so delicious. Your DS doesn't deserve you (and your DKnobhead certainly doesn't)

I've read the blurb on Mimi's Fast Beach Diet. It seems identical to what we've been recommending here for those on a plateau, or just wanting to speed up 5:2 !

So: calorie counting, stricter NFDs - cutting booze & treats, complex carbs instead of white, HIIT, possibly adding an extra FD ......

Has Mimi been reading our threads ? Grin

SunshineofRay · 15/06/2014 18:50

mrsflorrick and bigchoc thanks for the tips, I've always had a little bit on my bum even when I was a size 8 and my family also have it
I don't drink and the only caffeine is green tea or the occasional pg tips
I will get a body brush tomorrow and get cracking

Well done to everyone who has lost pounds and more importantly inches Smile

MrsFlorrick · 15/06/2014 18:53

Thanks Bigchoc. Grin Prolly your squats what did it Wink

DS is now going to bed without dinner of any kind. He doesn't seem bothered. I am though. Confused

Oh well almost bed time. And for me too yawn.

Should probably do some paperwork but can't actually be bothered plus i need to stay out of the kitchen to avoid an FD fail. (Am currently at 490cal and I'd like to end the day here).

Chopsypie · 15/06/2014 20:01

Well I've been for a run and despite take away pizza for tea I'm 300 calories under (had a late cooked breakfast so no lunch)
Weight day for DH and I tomorrow, and I've also had him take some scary underwear only photos of me to I can see my progress.
Back to work tomorrow which I always find easier than weekends.
Good luck for everyone fasting tomorrow

Breadandwine · 15/06/2014 20:57

Thanks for the good wishes, folks!

Although I'm aware that FD (think about it! Grin) is a manufactured celebration it was still nice to receive a fine bottle of wine and a smart cricket hat (if that's not a contradiction in terms! Smile) from my children this morning.

I'm lucky in that, as it's my wife's birthday today, we had my son and our three grandchildren down for the weekend. So, over the weekend, together we swam, played table tennis and made bread.

Their ages are 12, 10 and 8, and their company just gets better and better. My wife and I are very fortunate, indeed!

Once again I find this thread a very heart-warming read! Congratulations to those reporting SVs and NSVs - and if it's not working for you as well as you'd like, hang on in there and it will! In the meantime you can console yourself with the health benefits IF brings!

I've just had a meal of tempura and curried wedges - something I would never have dreamed of having prior to this WOL!

I have to report the meal was deelish! Grin

vvviola · 15/06/2014 23:00

Thanks for all the psoraisis info - interesting to hear this WOE can potentially help.

I've gone off all the meds I had tried for psoraisis - I had to stop when pregnant/breastfeeding, and they weren't much use anyway. Most of the medication here isn't "funded", which means it's insanely expensive. My most recent success was actually with a manuka honey/bee propolis cream, so I've started that again. I'm actually tempted to go back to the more basic treatments for a while (all that messy coal tar stuff) to see if it can get the bulk of it under control before looking into the more expensive treatments.

It was a weekend of NSVs for me :)
DH (who has been supportive if a little bemused) said "oh, you have actually lost weight haven't you" when I was getting changed last night. Grin
And then I noticed I was having to put my bras on a tighter hook - thought it was just because they had stretched, but measured last night and all measurements (bust, chest, waist, thighs, hips) with the exception of hips are down between 1cm and 5cm (although the 5cm on my thighs may be a measurement error I suspect). Not noticing it particularly in my clothes yet, other than my bras, but hurray!!!

FD today. Dinner may be tricky as I'm doing roast pork (took it out to do yesterday, but nobody was in the mood, so we had minestrone and crusty bread instead), and the smell is going to be very hard to resist and we won't even mention the crackling

BigChocFrenzy · 16/06/2014 00:15

Great NSV about the inches vvv. That's lost body fat. Progress even visible to your DH.
Grin
< and let's call his bemusement a compliment. You are training him, I take it ? >

MazzleDazzle · 16/06/2014 06:41

Morning!

I was up with the larks and everyone else is still in bed. All I can hear is the clock. Bliss! Though a long lie would have been even better, but work calls.

Well done vvv! That's cracking. You'll probably find that different parts of your bod. lose cms at different rates. Maybe next time your thighs will stay the same, but your hips will shrink. That's what I found. Round my tummy button was really slow to shift, but eventually it shrunk too.

I took underwear photos too Chops. Must get round to taking another soon!

Interesting comments re. cellulite. My DD is only 3 and her thighs have always been dimply! Bloody varicose veins are my issue! I've already had one of them zapped. Really need to get the other leg done, but don't fancy wearing those bloody stockings in summer!

After yesterday's FD I've lost just over a pound Grin. I only record my weight 'officially' on MFP when I have a new loss, which is much more satisfying. Any gain is only temporary (holiday, NFD) and so I don't record them. Also, I get all of my measurements, body analysis, weight and fitness recorded at the end of every month at my HIIT class.

Happy belated birthday Mrs B&W! It sounds like your whole family had a lovely day. Thanks

Boleh · 16/06/2014 07:41

Hi folks
Congrats to vvv and mazzle on NSVs and SVs Smile
I am requesting a (gentle) kick up the bum. My happy routine has all fallen apart since my holiday and instead of reducing the holiday gain I've put on 1lb!
The FDs are fine, one completed since my return and one in progress but the NFDs have gone to pot! I went out on Friday night and had a couple of drinks (literally 4 drinks - and not pints of vodka!) and felt awful on Saturday, now I'm still tired so eating sweet stuff for energy (I know this causes a vicious cycle of sugar crashes!) and not doing the exercise I normally would. I've also been craving (and eating) far too many refined carbs, preferably covered in cheese! I'm pretty sure that's TOTM related - bah!
So, FD today and I need a nudge to cook something healthy for dinner tonight and get a veggie soup made and in the fridge for lunch tomorrow and generally get back on it! I know I was feeling better when I was eating well on NFDs and to FDs can't make me loose weight if I make up to calories on NFDs Sad

Chopsypie · 16/06/2014 07:48

Big kick boleh! You know you can do this, you know it feels good! Can you maybe buy some skinny soup to get you kick started?

I've had another SV this morning, 2lb down. That's 9lbs in 3 weeks which I know is incredibly quickly, but I was eating massively over my TDEE so my calorie consumption is very low. I'm still within 10% of it most days now so I'm happy.

postmanpatscat · 16/06/2014 08:38

Well done chopsy 9lbs in 3 weeks is fine, I lost 8lbs in my first three weeks and I was only 10st 1 to start with.

boleh you can absolutely do this. TOTM will pass and it will get easier.

vvv congrats on your NSV.

Boleh · 16/06/2014 08:46

Thanks chopsy and congratulations on the loss - that's really great! I had also been eating over TDEE (I guess that's how we gained the weight Blush )so it's a bit of a mindset change but sounds like it's been very effective for you.

I live abroad so unfortunately no such thing as Skinny Soups here! Very few convenience foods at all and certainly no healthy ones, that's one of the reasons that starting again feels like such an effort. Silly really as previously I was really enjoying cooking healthy low cal, high nutrient food. Perhaps I need to find some recipes to get inspired by, Indian and Asian good as I can get the ingredients!

Chopsypie · 16/06/2014 09:05

Boleh do you have Pinterest? Lots of lovely recipes on there. I've also got a lot of recipes from Lavender and lovage www.lavenderandlovage.com

Boleh · 16/06/2014 09:39

Thanks chopsy great idea! I've just joined Pinterest for wedding planning Blush so will try that and your suggested website.
