Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 45: Getting keen on quinoa, learning to love the lettuce and varying the veg - help and advice on improving our health and eating habits with 5:2 fasting.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

This was going to be an fd today but I'm really struggling. I'm feeling tired and very hungry.
I've got a few things to do so I'm going to see how I feel in and hr. I might do a 300 cal lunch and 300 cal dinner. Its my 3rd fast day this week so I'm not going to feel bad about it.

In the meantime, a big glass of water and a cup of coffee is required.

meadowquark · 13/06/2014 11:54

bigchoc my TDEE is 2020 according to TDEE calculator in the beginning od this thread (sedentary lifestyle chosen). I now weigh 211 lbs.
I try to keep within 1800-200kcal within NFDs.

brockhurst44 · 13/06/2014 12:55

good luck everyone on a FD! 2lbs off today (well MFP rounds up and down ) so probably something like that!
really pleased but I think I need to jazz up menus as getting a bit bored.....
Any recommendations let me know..
Also going to Wagamamas tomorrow what is the best thing to have calorie wise??

BigChocFrenzy · 13/06/2014 13:13

Meadow If you notice a difference in measurements or in clothes fit, then you are losing fat, which is the whole purpose.
In that case, your body composition is changing and the weekly scales don't matter. Weight monthly say.

Otherwise, some folk lose more quickly or more slowly than expected from the calorie deficit.
More slowly: frequent dieters, PCOS, metabolic / thyroid / stress issues ....

Also, the TDEE calculators are average values. Some people may have TDEE up to 15% lower, so are slow to lose.

If you want to speed up a little, we recommend TDEE of your goal TDEE, not your current one, for NFDs - is that around 1700 ?
This also trains you how you will need to eat later to maintain a healthy weight.

Evening all Grin. Just thought I'd pop in and say hello.

To all the lovely new folk who don't know me, I'm an oldie 5:2er who is at goal weight hence I don't often hang out here.

Had a skim off thread and you're all doing fab.

Bigchoc gives amazing advice (love Bigchoc Thanks).

Of all the nonsense spouted about ways of eating/diets and particularly 5:2, this is the worst load of crap from a meedja hungry celeb: www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2657151/My-stomach-small-I-hardly-appetite-I-weight-I-hallucinate-Philip-Schofield-tells-dramatic-effects-5-2-diet.html

Sorry about the DM link.

Can't stand him anyway and now I've lost all respect. What a load of nonsense.

I can report as a long term 5:2er that at no point have I hallucinated Hmm nor is my stomach so small I can't keep food down or weigh on AngryAngryAngry wtf

Wot a nob.

Anyway as you all were. I'm sure Bigchoc will let rip shortly on the science bit (if you're not all too busy hallucinating that is Wink)

ErrolTheDragon · 13/06/2014 18:19

Hi MrsF! Hope things are OK with you - IIRC you were having a hard time a while back with various things.

Today again didn't do my normal exercise - I'd had my usual post-FD couple of teas and an almond milk mocha and just started warm-up when DH suggested a bike ride - I got a new bike over a year ago (when DD outgrew hers and decided she wanted mine) but we hardly rode last year. Much nicer bike than the old one. NSV cycling bottoms too big. Grin (small SV too - back below 57kg/9st which I'm happy with... just want to replace more fat with muscle). Our town has quite a lot of nice offroad paths, so we had a good couple of hours followed by lunch in the park cafe (an FFS ... fish finger sandwich with salad). Then did an hours or so gardening and then some work.... my days are rather more productive if I don't start MNing in the morning. Blush

BigChocFrenzy · 13/06/2014 18:21

but wash your iPad with the strongest disinfectant if you've surfed the Daily Fail.
Hmm
A few "celebrities" whom I've never heard of may have done a silly version of 5:2
Hmm
They lost too much weight, so it sounds like they cut their calories below the recommended targets for FDs and / or NFDs and stayed too long on the weight loss phase, probably forcing their bodies to super-low BMI.

Also, the calories they ate may not have been very healthy, maybe too much alcohol or treats.

We stress health and sustainability on these threads, not fashionable emaciation.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/06/2014 18:27

The real problems in the Daily Muck were with the Master cleanse detox and juice diets. Well, we've been warning of the health consequences of those.
Detox diets bring a very quick initial loss, but this is temporary and recent studies indicate 40% of this loss may be muscle.

MrsFlorrick · 13/06/2014 18:47

Hi Errol. Grin Waves. Yes hard time was FILs bowel cancer and subsequent complications and we all had scarlet fever. Joy.
FIL has finally come home from hospital after 5 long months. Cancer and complication free. He is weak but walking and getting stronger.
He has been charged with danerous driving (for those recall, this was the start of all the family stuff). And is going to court later this year. He is pleading guilty and given he is over 80, he will probably lose his licence. Particularly as his glasses prescription turned out to be +4 points out!!! ShockConfusedConfused So he couldn't see HmmAngry anyway. There we are.

Bigchoc. iPad currently immersed in Milton disinfectant Wink

I know its rubbish. I'm just HmmConfusedAngry at the idea of hallucinating doing 5:2 Hmm

Argh. Rant of the day over.

TalkinPeace · 13/06/2014 19:09

Holey moley fanoley
I must have a life : this thread had dropped off my active list as I've been lurking on Maintainers and picking fights in Education
oh yeah and doing a bit of work.

BUT
for any newcomers who are feeling a bit wary ....
just go for it.
I hopped on the scales this morning
NB for the last two months I've done burger all exercise and stuff all "proper fasts"
I'd not put on ANY weight
I'm fatter because my muscles are gleefully turning to flab
but fasting a couple of times a week WORKS at keeping this 49 year old happily in size 8 dresses

Chopsypie · 13/06/2014 20:12

The long term benefits are what has made me decide to try this WOE. I want to get into good habits now, at 26, instead of being enormous and struggling for the rest of my life.

I'm 700 calories under TDEE with no real effort (made cauliflower crust pizza for tea, was quite yummy!). Just trying to find a reasonable healthy snack/supper now.

So all in all another good week but as ever the weekend will be the true test

BigChocFrenzy · 13/06/2014 20:16

Big (({hugs})) to MrsF
You've had a torrid 2014 . Hopefully most of your family problems will get easier now.
And visiting the chocolate room in the Maldives must have raised your morale .....

ThePowerOfMe · 13/06/2014 20:18

Today was a disaster. I couldn't get a grip today so have eaten loads. I don't want to lose my momentum and I'm still aiming for a stone weight loss over 6 weeks so I'm doing a fast day tomorrow.

Labracadabra · 13/06/2014 20:38

Philip Schofield is just annoyed because losing weight has given him a scraggy neck. I hardly think losing a stone and a half over 10 months is dramatic - its about half a pound a week! People were asking "if he was alright" Blimey, whatever next. Solid scientific proof (that Philip Schofield has a lentil where his brain should be)

TalkinPeace · 13/06/2014 20:43

Slebs have always lied about their weight etc (cf Angelina "no botox" jolie)
5:2 works, they cannot hide behind it

Baloostika · 13/06/2014 20:55

Labrac lol, I wish there was a like button on here. I like the lentil brain suggestion.
Hi everyone, it's been awhile but I've been lurking around and getting d much needed encouragement to push on.
BCF I did the two consecutive 650 FDs wit u and I'm feeling very virtuous, I wanted to add another FD today (which is not necessary) but it didn't work out, anyways I'm still like 1000cls below TDEE wch is fine IYAM.
MrsFlo it is well wit u and your family, all these shall pass.

MrsFlorrick · 13/06/2014 21:15

Big choc. Yes the choc room holiday (as DD calls it Grin) helped.
Thanks Thanks.

TIP. Yes to slebs lying about weight.

Labra. GrinGrin Can't stand him either. I think that's why the stupid article announced e so much. FFS. "People asking me if I was alright" Hmm

Erm. Well that would be the perma-smirk you sport Phil and the glowing Chernobyl-like tan.....

Again to any new folk here having a go at 5:2. It's so easy. And at no point is hallucinating involved.

I find maintaining easy. I don't really have to fast two full days a week but I sometimes do so that I can scoff lots of cheese and chocolate and Wine at the weekend Blush

On that note the Wine and cheese are calling. Oops must be hallucinating Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 13/06/2014 21:45

Labra - Grin at the scraggy neck column. If you're overweight and over 50 and lose weight, that's liable to happen however you do it.

And the comment about 'scarily thin legs' ... that suggests muscle loss since men typically don't carry much fat on their legs. If PS had only joined MN 5:2, he'd have known he should be trying to lose fat and keep muscle. BC would have had him doing ATG squats Grin.

As to Gwyneth hallucinating after a 10 day 'cleanse' - actually, extreme fasting is well known to cause this. Why do you think it's so popular with some religious/mystic types? But 5:2 shouldn't be that extreme - each fast is of short duration and isn't even a total fast.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/06/2014 22:01

Several scientific studies indicate that IF regimes such as 5:2 or ADF results in less muscle loss than conventional diets.

Strength training a few times a week on 5:2/ADF can avoid any muscle loss, or can even build more muscle.

Especially do Big Girls and Arse To Grass squats for upper and lower body respectively.
Smile

Bollard · 14/06/2014 08:24

Love the PS lentil brain!
AF finally arrived, 1 week late and with horrible pmt. has anyone else experienced anything like that on 5:2?

Eatriskier · 14/06/2014 08:33

I haven't read the ps article but why was he doing it if he was hallucinating ffs? I mean honestly, none of us would recommend continuing in those circumstances.

Though I did struggle not to keep losing weight. However some of that was my insistence that I keep fasting twice a week (though not calorie counting at the end). Now I'm more realistic about things.

MollyBdenum · 14/06/2014 08:45

My honeymoon period of rapid weigh loss seems to be over, so I think I'll find out soon roughly how much weight I'm likely to lose a week in the long term. I took some measurements including body fat (gulp) so hopefully I will be able to see progress even if my weight plateaus.

Are there any Saturday fasters today? If so, good luck.

BetsyBell · 14/06/2014 08:47

Lentil Brain should have eaten more breakfasts like the one I've just had - coffee with double cream and left over birthday cake. Grin

Having said that, the coffee is quite strong and the caffeine and sugar hit are making me feel quite giddy! Wonder how much of each it would take to hallucinate though?

I love the irony of the DailyFail gobbing on about how dramatic and terrible losing a stone in 10 months is Confused I'm not going to do it but I'm sure a google search would find many hits of "[woman's name] lost 1 stone in 3 weeks! Find out how!" in the Fail's archives. Obviously it's fine for women to waste down to nothing and lose her muscles but for a man to undertake such a foolhardy venture is a thing of shame.

Sigh.

Chopsypie · 14/06/2014 09:44

Betsy can I come to yours for breakfast please?

Can anyone recommend a workout to do at home for me please? I'm very much a beginner to exercise, and have two under 4 and a husband who averages 60 hours a week. So not much time to get out and do something.
I have found all sorts on google but I don't know if it's good or suitable!
