Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

I wouldn't have thought so. Congratulations on your baby! Are you bf/ff? Getting any sleep? The oldies Wink will be able to advise you the best way to go with calories etc

Labracadabra · 27/05/2014 21:05

Thanks BCF that is certainly worth thinking about, although with 2 DDs (3.5 and 6 months) I do like to get exercise done before they wake up as I never know if I'll find the time/energy to do it later! Still feeling washed out (maybe coming down with something?) but I've had my supper of grilled chicken with huge salad and a tablespoon of quinoa and brushed my teeth and closed the kitchen - FD not botched after all. Was going to do consecutive (i.e. tomorrow too) as we've a busy weekend of socialising (eating!) ahead but not too sure now. Maybe a mini fast tomorrow instead.

onceipopicantstop · 27/05/2014 21:21

Hi just found some info on the fpa website which says if fasting more than once a month it can affect contraception. So I guess 5:2 is not for me at the moment!

BigChocFrenzy · 27/05/2014 21:30

Welcome Toby That sounds a good soup for FDs.
I sometimes add frozen veg or tinned beans to soup and then microwave to make the lazy woman's veg stew.

Welcome, onceipopicantstop Congratulations on your lovely DC
Smile
No problem fasting with the Pill (or it wouldn't be a suitable WOE for women !) Our OP was only to warn those taking meds for chronic conditions, illnesses etc
If you are BFing, I recommend you start FDs at 1000 cals. You can reduce gradually to say 700 as you get used to fasting, or you can stay at 1000.

Thank you Itsfab, TalkInPeace and violetina for replying to my rant (again!).

I always drink plenty of water and no I am not overeating on my NFDs. I have tracked for 6 years on MFP and I know that I am eating about TDEE (that’s way never manage to slim down – appetite is too big!).
I am coming to a conclusion that perhaps I am having constipation and generally cannot enjoy my lovely food on NFDs – today total cramps after cottage cheese, cauliflower salad and bits of Japanese food. Strange but maybe I should look at the good side of things – finally I am not thinking of food all the time. What I love the most about 5:2 that on those 2 FDs I don’t need to think of food too much – with calorie counting it is always obsessive to the point where I cannot keep up. I am looking forward to my next FD. Hopefully my body will adjust.

Breadandwine thanks for your explanation about bladder control. Sometimes when I think of my bedwetting DS I think “this too shall pass” and this somehow helps.

Itsfab and Labracadabra have you survived your FD?? Well done all fasters. SpottyTeacakes I would be tempted by that chocolate! TobyLerone welcome!

TobyLerone · 27/05/2014 21:36

Chicken bovril is also good (I don't like miso soup). Excellent idea to add veg/beans! Thanks :)

I'm EBF but 500cal FDs seem do-able for me so far.

BigChocFrenzy · 27/05/2014 21:37

My understanding re fasting is that they mean complete fasting, say for religious reasons, when a pill could count as breaking the rules.

Also, with 5:2/IF you have at least 500 cals every day, or up to 1000 when BFing. So, you can always take the pill with food.

OP posts:
Itsfab · 27/05/2014 21:58

Not sure I did that great but must have been well under 700 so will take that but I cant deny I am not looking forward to eating tomorrow and will be having bacon sandwiches!

vvviola · 27/05/2014 22:05

Starting into my sec

vvviola · 27/05/2014 22:08

Let me try that again....

Starting into my second FD of the week.

Made a lovely bolognese yesterday, planning to give it to the rest of the family today while I had salad. Decided to put it into MFP out of curiosity. Seems that a small portion only comes in at 250 cals!! Can that be right? There's lots of lentils and veg in there, but there's also a tiny bit of red wine.

I'm going to look it over again to make sure I didn't forget anything, but if it's all good then dinner will bolognese on green beans and salad. We actually had frost here this morning (pretty unusual for Auckland) so something comfort food-y would hit the spot perfectly.

Helliecopter · 27/05/2014 22:38

onceipop I really hope fasting doesn't affect the pill because I don't fancy getting caught with DC3 any time soon!!!

As BCF said, I think it probably refers to total fasting not what we are all doing here. I think plenty of women on the pill are having success with it :)

Helliecopter · 27/05/2014 22:47

Sorry for he double post. Phone doing odd things.

Closed the FD kitchen at about 6:30pm with a mug of highlights fudge flavour and brought the day in at 450ish. Pleased with that. Got plenty of veg, eggs and a bit if fruit, so I feel happy with today. Let's see whether I can tame the post FD beast tomorrow! Eek.

Well done fasters and non fasters today. Another day ticked off!

BetsyBell · 27/05/2014 22:49

Bolognese with salad is lovely vvv - it's the pasta bit that is the big load of calories! Meat and veg is ideal for fast days.

Spurred on by TIP's cooking teens, I'm going to teach DS1 (almost 10yo) how to make chilli tomorrow - it'll be my fast day meal - served with veg and/or salad for me and the DH. I'm very keen to have these kids taught some basic favourites! DS2 helped with the cooking tonight and said now he understands why making dinner takes about an hour. He's learnt some basics tonight Grin

We'll make enough chilli for 2 nights though so we can make cornbread to go with it next time - definitely a NFD meal!

GoodtoBetter · 27/05/2014 22:50

2nd FD for me tmrw.

Not2bObvious · 28/05/2014 05:41

Morning all. 2nd FD for me as off my hols tomorrow Welcome Once, I'm in agreement about the pill, sure if it was that sensitive there'd be a much higher failure rate did make me worried for a min I'm sure you'll love getting back into 5:2 and as baba grows, you'll shrinkWink
Busy day ahead which is exactly how I like my fd's. Something eggy for lunch, bit of thin crust pizza with salad for dinner, kitchen closed by 6 and then breakfast at the airport around 9, nearly giving me a 16 hour gap. Really need to maximise every minute before I go as it'll be food food food once I get there. I've been known to gain 10lbs on a 2 week break, I am only going for 1 week but it's to a major food capital. I'm going to focus on 2-3 meals, no snacks, tastes rather troweling it in and plenty of walking. Soo excitedGrin Anyone else on a midweek fast?

SpottyTeacakes · 28/05/2014 07:42

Where are you going Not2? 13 days until my holiday!

NFD here. Sausage and Mash for dinner but I will have sausages and roasted veg. Will have to go to tesco for lunch inspiration.

My next FD is Friday but we're going out for dinner hmm might swap it for tomorrow instead

SquirrelledAway · 28/05/2014 07:55

Woohoo, big SV this morning, as the scales gave me the magic 9st 13 - I was last 9st something 24 years ago, half a lifetime ago.

Not2 where are you off to? We have a big trip planned in July, sooooo looking forward to it.

violetina · 28/05/2014 07:57

Does anyone else find they are sleeping better on this woe ? I have had a glorious, unbroken night (no small dc here any more) after a Fd.

I wonder if it's from going to bed without undigested food in my stomach?

violetina · 28/05/2014 07:57

Well done Squrrelled!

vvviola · 28/05/2014 08:02

Oops. Did an unintentional self-sabotage on my FD. As I was getting the DCs snack ready after school I was munching away on the hummus and crackers before I remembered it was a fast day. Sad

I didn't go totally off the rails though, and still had my planned FD dinner. I'm going to put it all into MFP now and see just how bad it was. Hopefully I'll still be under 600.

Itsfab · 28/05/2014 08:14

Morning all Smile

Just had a slice of toast and really enjoyed it.

NSV - did not weigh myself this morning after yesterdays FD.

Going out shortly to see if youngest Fab needs new trainers. I really hope he doesn't need school shoes and trainers as they break up for the summer in about 6 weeks.

GirlCat brought me a gift but Hero Biggest Fab got rid for me and Youngest Fab offered.

Have raspberries out for the kids and might bake later. See how the shoe shopping goes...

Helliecopter · 28/05/2014 09:18

Morning team...
DD2 is having a teething nightmare this morning. My happy baby is a screaming wreck. 2 slices of toast with marmalade and a massive oat biscuit already. I need to stop right now!

itsfab brilliant NSV - I weighed after mine this morning Blush knew I shouldn't and felt heavy....and I was! But I have trained myself to ignore it honest

jacketpotatowithtuna · 28/05/2014 09:27

Morning everyone. I have spontaneously decided to have a FD today. I just don't want to think about food. I am loving my newly found "full" reset button.

Strange thing, after pretty low carb NFD yesterday I had a couple of rusks with milk, went to the toilet for BM and my stomach has flattened out. But woke out with bloated stomach and slightly nauseous this morning once again. What the heck is going on.

Lovely day!

SpottyTeacakes · 28/05/2014 09:27

NSV here: no muffin top on my size 8 jeans (which probably need a wash Blush) and I looked at a photo from two years ago of me in a bikini and I was definitely more podgy, was also 9 weeks pregnant but won't worry about that...
