The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

almost if you feel like you're changing shape then don't worry about the scales. I lost half an inch everywhere last week but the scales went up - probably built some muscle and my scales say that I am more hydrated than usual - I'm usually around 49% on my scales, currently sitting at 51% (I look at the fluctuations between these numbers rather than the numbers themselves, IYSWIM).

Successful FD yesterday, will go for a good walk this morning and have a light lunch so that I can save my calories for home made pizza tonight.

vvviola I find those ready made fresh filled pastas (ravioli, tortellini) are great after swimming, 3 to 5 mins to cook and then a bit of grated cheese over the top. DS1 often doesn't finish swimming until late (plus allowing for 30 minutes messing around in the shower with his mates) and then he's absolutely starving by the time we get home.

Itsfab · 23/05/2014 07:59

Morning all Smile

Great fruit and veg total there, BCF.

I am down Grin. 11 stone 5.6 and my fat percentage is 32.3 Shock. I can't find my booklet to see where it is meant to be but I feel it is lower tan previously. I am looking on line to see if I can find a chart.

Can eat today but won't go mad as DH has said we are having a takeaway.

DD is poorly Sad. High temp and has pain from where she fell. Not good for her as she has physical problems. She can't walk and really wanted to go to school as last day today Sad.

Not2bObvious · 23/05/2014 08:01

Morning all. So I WI this morning and after 1 year of 5:2, I'm officially 11 pound down - down from 12.5.2 to 11.8.2. Time to apply for the next season of secret eaters I reckon. The absolute lightest I got to was around last November and I was 11.0.2. The positive thing about doing the WI is I'm no longer under any illusion I'm losing weight since I've gained close to 4 pound since Easter, the 4 pound I'd lost over Easter. In'f'ing'furiating. Not looking for sympathy or advice, apologies for me me me, just need to get it out. Clothes still fit, health improved, it's Friday and I've less than a week to my holidays. Lots to look forward too. Will go for quite a strict week, go back to basics in advance of my hols. Today can't be an FD but it won't be over tdee. Best of luck Amy Friday fasters

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/05/2014 08:07

Morning all - checking in for a FD today. It is the first day of the school holidays so I'm keeping an open mind Grin

Have got a soup planned for before I take DS1 to an activity later, and then dinner all organised for when we get back.

Gum I have a jawbone, they are fab aren't they? I average 8500 steps a day during the week without having to think 'ooh I shall go for a walk', which I am pleased about. I also get more light sleep than deep sleep - and mine now tells me when to go to bed to get my goal amount of sleep based on my average actual wake-up time.

vvviola · 23/05/2014 08:34

Squirrelled unfortunately almost all of those pastas are egg based or contain cheese, so a no-go in this allergy household, which is a huge shame as before DD2 came along they were our 'emergency dinner' staple Sad

But, have managed to swap a few things around so that they actually get to eat before swimming (it's only DD1 who swims, I just wrestle toddler DD2 at the side of the pool!). So it's only me and DH who need feeding late. He's gone in search of curry now. I think I might only do takeaway every second week and do a FD/mini fast the other week. Takeaways every week are part of what got me where I am in the first place!

Boleh · 23/05/2014 08:35

After an absolute nightmare month of FDs interspersed with horrible over eating or binging on NFDs, not enough exercise and losing and gaining the same 3lbs I am finally actually down! Only by 1lb compared to my lowest at the start of horror month but it has given me the incentive to try to get things back under control.
I am absolutely never running 2 packs of the pill together again! I end up with PMT type bloat and carb monster for 3 weeks!!

ditsygal · 23/05/2014 08:58

I am on my second FD today, and feel good about it. THink I will focus less on food and spend more calories on coffee that I can drink through out the day to keep me feeling more satisfied.
I am also struggling with tiredness today as my 18 month decided last night was the night to get up in the middle of the night again after 1 month of sleeping through - I thought we had cracked it, but I was up for 2 hours with him in the night and could cry.
Oh well - aiming for a good fast day - something I can control at least!

BetsyBell · 23/05/2014 09:03

Haha Bigchoc! No effect on me as now it's NFD! Now I get to eat nuts and plenty of them Grin

Strawbs and melon do sound lovely though, would have made a wonderful breakfast with a generous blog of greek yogurt and some chopped nuts.

not2 Congratulations on a year of this - would it be fair to say that without 5:2 that might be 11lbs+ up?

Well done violetina :)

Good luck Friday fasters!

Boleh · 23/05/2014 09:21

Errol just been reading back through the thread (after my rather rude me me me post Blush and saw your question about cooking pulses from scratch. I do this for most pulses as the tinned ones cost a fortune here and supply of them is unreliable - lentils I just start a bit earlier than I otherwise would and have them boiling away for 15-30 mins while I'm prepping and frying off all the other stuff that TV chefs never seem to include in their timings and it doesn't seem to take massively longer. Kidney beans I do the pre-boil, change the water and do most of the 2nd cooking for a big batch at once then split into smaller bags - 100g works for me - and freeze them, then when I cook with them I just chuck them in and leave them a little longer than I would with tinned, they do take an age to do the cooking and not sure i'd bother if they weren't pushing 2.50 a tin with us both being veggie!
Chickpeas I still currently have a tinned supply as I use them for hummus so it's good to have them cooked and unfrozen but I have recently seen dried so I might do the batch thing with them to use for cooking and splurge on tinned just for hummus.

jacketpotatowithtuna · 23/05/2014 09:26

Morning all. Had a good FD yesterday but not good emotionally (DS1 was violent again towards childminder and so we got handed a notice).
Did not have a good sleep at all. I started today with a hearty breakfast (>600kcal) but hoping not to snack in between my meals so it should even out.

After weighing +3lbs after my first FD I am terrified of weighing again (3 FDs in my account). I am afraid I will be a good company for Not2bObvious!

Itsfab · 23/05/2014 10:16

Sympathy in bucket loads Not2BObvious. I am about the same as I was at Christmas with the same few pounds going on and off. Lowest I got to was 11 2 and I have been mainly 11 5 - 11 10 at the worst since. Today I am 11 5.6 and taking that.

I am off to make sundried tomato and cheese bread once I can find a recipe to make what I actually want it to turn out like.

DD still in bed, in pain and can't walk Sad.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/05/2014 10:52

Sympathy for all of you with ill/sleep-breaking/otherwise problematic kids.

FD for me, done my JM, must ignore MN for a while and get some work finished and then start on the packing and house-tidying ... preparations for a holiday ensure you need it! Did a massive pile of ironing last night too.

Will not be fasting while on holiday, but will try to eat mindfully.... hopefully get some good seafood and beer but I can't drink much anyway.

Incentive to not splurge and maybe try to do a bit of exercise while away.... I seem to have signed DH and myself up for an intermediate windsurfing course at the end of June and we need to get some practice in before then.

almostthereagain · 23/05/2014 11:02

Poor dd itsfab hope she's better soon, so many not well just nowSad
jacket & not2 soory to hear about the fluctuations & ds trouble, it is hard when there are added stresses to keep focus, I know I struggle, but I also know I DO feel better for doing it & eating nutritiously. itsfab there's certainly lots in your post to feel GREAT about, well done you!
Great news for you too bolehSmile
Thanks for your responses violet & squirrel I did a really successful fast yesterday & came in under 500 feeling great, was hopeful to have a good WI as I felt light iykwimConfused dd & I are out until about 8.30 so will eat late tonight, dh & I are out tomorrow night so I think I will take it as it comes (mindful of course) & try your advice of an extra fast sunday. Was looking forward to cooking one of my favs, diavolo poussin but I can have it another dayGrin

almostthereagain · 23/05/2014 11:03

Have fun errol

Not2bObvious · 23/05/2014 13:04

Thanks guys for kind words. Oh yes Betsy there's absolutely every chance I'd be back to my worst weight of 13.7. But for me right now 5:2 hike initially worked is just a maintenance program and that's down to somethingom doing wrong. It's bitter though cause I have worked hard and I don't want to lose sight of the success, it's just looks piddly to me after a year. I have to get over today and back into my good frame of mind, I am fitter, I eat better and I look better. I just don't think I'm going to lose any more weight. Might need to make my piece with that cause in not going to keep like this for another 15 years (weight watching in 1 form or another for that long)
As the man says get busy living Wink

Not2bObvious · 23/05/2014 13:06

Forgive the grammar and spelling mistakes, peace not piece etc etc

BigChocFrenzy · 23/05/2014 13:37

Sorry to hear how so many are sleep-deprived. That is so tough
Flowers
For anyone who is stuck, gaining and losing the same few lb:

If you are within healthy BMI, waist and body fat range, this may just be the lowest limit your individual body accepts.
This may change over time, as your body gets used to its new weight, but don't try to force things.

If you're losing inches, great !
That means you're losing fat, getting healthier and a better shape, so bugger the scales !
Grin
If not losing fat, the problem usually lies with the NFDs.
I know that's hard work to change habits, but check if you are:
. Exceeding TDEE
. Or under-eating < Fab I'm looking at you>
. Eating too many simple carbs and even junk or alcohol - this can hinder weight loss even if within TDEE.

Suggestions:
. mfp the NFDs (yes, it's a pain, but so is working hard for no loss)
. Calculate over a week what % of cals are "treats", i.e. alcohol, with added sugar, or simple white carbs.
Aim for

Ooh thanks BC just redone mine & I'm at 27.7% age 42, which has cheered me up. I'm sure I was around 30% last time I checked, yet still same weight! As you all tell us, TRACK YOUR MEASUREMENTS!!

TalkinPeace · 23/05/2014 14:23

Not2obvious
if 5:2 is "not working" as maintenance then most likely your total intake over the week is more than your reduced TDEE
I have to be really careful to restrict calories all week if I want to relax at the weekend ....
but I do not resent it as I like being 9 stone and I like having a couple of blow out meals a week.

Have a go at doing 23:3 Monday to Thursday - ie just eating a nice big supper (1200 calories ish) and otherwise just having drinks and maybe a munch of raw carrots (two or three whole carrots) at lunch

then the deficit even with a low TDEE ( mine is 1500 on a work day ) keeps working

Itsfab · 23/05/2014 14:23

SadI am 32.3. How can I STILL be obese? It can't be so. Sad

I am 5 foot 5.5 and currently weigh 11 stone 5.6lbs.

Interesting about your body stopping at its limit. How will I know that is mine when I have weighed less?

When I found out I was pregnant with DC1 I was 10 stone 2lbs. Took 6 months to lose my baby weight. After DC2 I took about a year to lose it all and was a few pounds above the 10 stone 2. When I was about to give birth to DC3 I was about 14 stone but was 11 stone 2lbs iirc when he was 2 months. I then put 2 stone on after he was a year old without realising due to the meds I was on I think and having 3 kids under 5 and not eating the right stuff.

I started Diet Chef in July 2012 and lost a stone in about 4 months. I think I started 5:2 in August 2013 and have lost nearly a stone. My best was 13lbs loss but I have gone up a little since.

From that does it tell you I have stuck as what is my level (interesting lowest I have got to in 11 stone 3lbs which is what I was 2 months after baby without trying) or am I just looking for an excuse given that I am struggling to eat enough on some days or eating small amounts but too high calorie food and generally being rubbish.

Not2bObvious · 23/05/2014 15:21

Sorry Tip I was actually saying 5:2 is only working as maintenance, not as weight loss - I'm pretty sure if I went hard core for a week, maybe 5:2 I'd be back at 11.4, but that's it, I don't seem to be able to get any lower consistently. Thanks for the suggested eating plan, I'm sure I'll have to do something like that when I get back from my holidays.
Fab I'll say it isn't so, you are absolutely not a bmi of 32.3, I'm an inch shorter than you and I'm about 27.5, your calculations are wrong, check again and don't be worried, you're like me, simply a bit overweight but no way obese, chin up!

TalkinPeace · 23/05/2014 15:54

itsfab I am also 5'5" .... friends at the gym who are 5'5" have happy weights between 8 stone and 10 stone
Your BMI is around 27 ... start by aiming for 24

not2
I can lose weight by eating in the way I said AND going to the gym. At the moment I'm not at the gym much.

Shatteredmamma1 · 23/05/2014 15:56

Poor Ds jacket and poor DD itsfab Thanks
I can't keep up with the thread! Haven't weighed as I weigh at work and kept forgetting first thing. Will try to remember Tuesday (after a BH!) Shock

almost and nims my partners in 7lbs..how are we doing? I still haven't managed a 500kcal fast but had a good day for me yesterday. Hoping to keep to TDEE this weekend! Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/05/2014 16:11

Just checking in - FD going well despite kids being on holidays :)

I am too ashamed to reveal my body fat % and waist measurement. Blush Although neither will be as bad as they were a month ago!! Grin

I feel really positive about today - in the past this would have been my downfall. We've got friends coming to stay tomorrow, and normally I would just think 'yay lovely weekend coming up' and already be knee-deep in the carbs and Wine.

I tried to do some exercise earlier, but that didn't go well - DCs were hopping round my feet, and then the Waitrose delivery guy turned up. Grin
