The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Hi everyone Smile

Just finished 3 hours of cleaning, sorting and tidying in DD and DS2's room. I am shattered. DS's room wasn't too bad. Just one item of clothing hiding under the bed but DD's! Numerous socks, unopened post, lots of tissues, books shoved under her bed Sad and school work all over. Words are going to be had once she is home.

Thanks jacketpotatowithtuna Hope you are having a better day today.

Thanks to you too MelanieCheeks. I have lost a pound since last weigh in but I am going to try and only weigh once a week after my second fast in future as it gets me down if I appear to be up.

nims1981 - I am feeling Blush about my moaning last night. I know I can do it as I have lost a stone but whatever plan I follow I loose a stone then stop. Summer is coming and I want to be able to wear my dresses and skirts without a jumper and coat to hide behind so will do it.

Hope your headache has gone Spotty.

Just had a sandwich. Probably rubbish idea but I have been wanting a cheese and chutney sandwich for months and decided today was the day. I feel weak and needed some actual food in me. Doing fish pie for tea. Yum.

SpottyTeacakes · 20/05/2014 14:51

It has thanks itsfab Smile

Just having a cup of oxo FD going well!

ErrolTheDragon · 20/05/2014 16:21

itsfab - after 3 hrs cleaning your DC's dens, the c&c sarnie sounds like a sane enough idea to me!

AuntyDiluvian · 20/05/2014 16:36

Hi - I stumbled on this thread last night and am resolved to start with my first FD TOMORROW (going out to eat tonight). I'm breastfeeding my one-year-old morning and evening so may go for 700-1000kcal on fast days at first and see how I go. Planning lots of tea for breakfast, miso soup and carrot sticks for lunch, and some kind of proper dinner but without the big heap of white carbs which would usually go with it.
Don't have any scales but I'm 5'7 and a 16-18 at the moment and was more comfortable as a 14. Well, I liked being a 12, but last time that happened I was 19 and it seems like an unrealistic goal! Will keep track of my inches - I'm a total 'apple' and I'd love to reduce my ginormous belly a bit.

Baloostika · 20/05/2014 16:53

Planning on eating two beef burgers come Saturday.
Anyone wanna stop me? [Angry] and evil Smile.
Good luck to all faster, I had the best of a FD yesterday and my next fast is Thursday, NEW going well, popcorn and tea all fay, prepping beef stew and beans for dinner. Can that be a fast BCF?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 20/05/2014 17:37

Preparing dinner so just checking in again - successful FD, they are definitely getting easier.

Have had half an apple and a cup of tea just to stave off the nibbles while I'm cooking!

fab I was doing a similar job this morning - and I could have murdered a cheese sarnie but was fasting! Will have to have one tomorrow now, mmmm cheese.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 20/05/2014 17:38

Aunty welcome, and I love your name Grin

SpottyTeacakes · 20/05/2014 17:39

I've had a delicious dinner but am craving that something sweet!

Those who MFP do you add cucumber/rocket/tomatoes etc?

nims1981 · 20/05/2014 18:16

hi everyone, my FD clocked in at just over 400 yesterday then I had a terrible night sleep and felt all week and pathetic! I've eaten a lot today but because I've been doing MFP I've thought more about what to eat and only about 30 over my TDEE. I ve done quite a lot of exercise too so nit too bad :-)

Tiggermummy, that sounds likens terrible day, poor you Sad

yes Almost I fasted yesterday going to do Thursday too. going to try and be better tomorrow as I really lost it last Wednesday.

Does anyone else have trouble staying asleep on FDays?

nims1981 · 20/05/2014 18:19

itsfab don't feelBlush this place is to let off steam Smile

BetsyBell · 20/05/2014 18:37

Just made some of those toasted chickpeas I put a recipe up for this thread or last, sprinkled on top of a big plate of a sort-of-slaw of grated turnip, carrot, apple and shredded red cabbage, dressed in lemon juice, ginger, and a splash of garlic vinaegrette. Blobs of greek yogurt and humus on the side, a few left over roast veggies too (aubergine, butternut squash and courgette). Oh it was yum. The best.

Happy NFD here.

I'm really pleased as I somehow only had 3 hours sleep last night so assumed I'd want to eat all the carbs, but no, I knew that the above would give me some much needed energy and I'm glad I made the effort. I'm claiming that as an LSV!

I had a scale victory today too - lowest ever weigh in, so that's a couple more pounds of lard melted off my thighs, making way for all the new muscle, woohoo!

Itsfab · 20/05/2014 18:47

Pleased to hear it Spotty!

Thanks Errol Smile I have felt weak all day and it is probably from doing too much. Their rooms are pretty small but they have so much stuff! I think I need to clean more as there was dust on the skirting boards.

Alibaba - hope I didn't stress you out too much with me having the cheese sarnie Sad. If it's any consolation it wasn't quite as nice as I thought it would be. I was just so hungry I didn't really savour it.

I am doing fasts on Mon and Thursday this week. That used to work but now I am wondering if it is too many NFD in a row?

I was awake at 3. Needed the loo and then a van turned up and it looked like a shopping delivery Confused then a neighbour roared off to work at 5-6am. I am just so tired and wish I could get more sleep. I was in asda at 6.15ish on Saturday morning fgs.

Daft NSV - pants are too big Grin.

SpottyTeacakes · 20/05/2014 19:08

I do Tuesday and Friday and always feel they're too far apart too! Maybe I should 4:3 ConfusedShock

I'm feeling hungry drink hasn't helped. I've enough calories for either a banana, an angel cake slice or five cheddars. I know which one I want but I know I shouldn't have any of them Grin

Itsfab · 20/05/2014 19:12

I never lost anything when I did 4:3.

Don't have the cheddars, they will set off the munchies and you will want more food.

almostthereagain · 20/05/2014 19:24

Well done betsy are you now under target?
That's great nim that you've managed your TDEE better today, it really helps to have the nutritious food over the empty cals doesn't it? Fingers xed you have a loss this weekSmile I think I struggled with sleep a bit to begin with, up to the loo & dreaming about b'fast then would have no appetite in the morning so crack on fuelled by coffeeConfused I expect you'll find it settles down, try to allow for a late night hot drink.
Welcome auntie & enjoy you meal out tonightSmile

BigChocFrenzy · 20/05/2014 19:46

What, another SV, Betsy !
Grin
How far are you now below your original target ?
From exercise thread, we know you've lost about 20% body fat and I set you some sums to do there, teacher
Hmm
Oh btw, re those baked chickpeas (which sound scrumptious): For a fan oven, would 160C be about right ?

Itsfab · 20/05/2014 19:56

Well done Betsy Grin!

BigChocFrenzy · 20/05/2014 20:06

Welcome, Aunty . Cool name.
Smile
If you're an apple, why not set a waist target too ?
The general recommendation for women is maximum 31.5 ins.

For those worried about 3 NFDs in a row:
I suggest setting a target of 1200 cals for the middle NFD, which should stop any 3-day orgy.
If it is a heavy social week, you could make that a mini-FD instead (50% TDEE)
I think adding a 3rd FD would make this WOE too tough to be sustainable longterm, so if you can stick to 5:2, you will learn good habits.
Smile

vvviola · 20/05/2014 20:39

Thanks for all the breakfast ideas, shall have a look through to see what might work for me Grin

FD here today, but had a massive row with DH last night probably slightly more my fault than his, but only slightly and I'd be very prone to comfort eating on days like this, so I shall have to work extra hard today.

Itsfab · 20/05/2014 20:54

I have pretty much eaten my TDEE and I am surprised how much I can eat and am sure I have no been eating enough Hmm.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 20/05/2014 20:59

fab no not at all - I've really let go of a lot of my angst around food in the last month. I think it must be the seratonin lift that DrM talks about in the book. I can have it tomorrow :)
Yay at pants - that is always a good one.

I have got the most awful earache :( It has been coming on by inches all day - I thought it was dehydration to begin with but I've drunk lots and it has just got steadily worse.

In other news, I had seven hours uninterrupted sleep last night. This has happened literally a handful of times since DS2 was born - he is now 3. Stringing a few of those together would do wonders!!

Spotty when I log cals I log everything so as to get a properly accurate picture. A small portion of each of those, enough to add up to one 80g serving of 'salad' for 5-a-day purposes, would be 23-25 calories according to mfp.

I fast on Tuesday and Thursday - I did used to do Mondays but then every time there is a bank holiday, or we're away for the weekend or have visitors then things get thrown out of the usual plan. Tuesdays and Thursdays are always pretty much the same week after week, and while I know the joy of 5:2 is the flexibility, I don't find it that easy to be flexible with small DCs in terms of meal-planning, otherwise we end up eating ready meals and takeaway Grin
I don't find that I eat more and more over those 4 days - I feel really calm about food because I know I can have it the next day or the next rather than trying to scoff all the yummy things I'm wanting into 2 days.

WilsonFrickett · 20/05/2014 21:19

Hi everyone!

Just checking in for the first time in weeks! I have been ill with a horrible chest infection/bronchial thing which really pulled me down, so much that I didn't fast for six weeks. But hey, guess what? Despite eating exactly what I fancied for all that time I did not put one single pound on Grin.

That said, back to 5:2 because a) I still have some to lose and b) I really like it Smile.

So I have a question. Got my days all mixed up this week and didnt manage a Monday fast so fasted today (all good). Can't fast properly on Thursday though as I'm meeting a friend for food before going to see Prince (woo-hoo!) and want to eat a 'normal' meal out (also may not have time for shopping around, might just have to take what we can get).

So how can I make best use out of my week? Should I fast again tomorrow? Or do a mini-fast on Thurs (ie no breakfast, fast-appropriate lunch, then whatever for dinner?) This sort of thing does pop up occasionally for me so it would be good to know what the 'best' approach is. I can just manage a 2 day fast but it isn't any fun .

nims1981 · 20/05/2014 21:25

Alibaba sorry to hear about your ear ache, that sounds nasty. I was just wondering how long you have been doing this WOE as you mentioned feeling completely at ease with food now? Hoping I'm going to get that back with this too Smile

nims1981 · 20/05/2014 21:28

Wilson Hi, why don't you fast from after lunch Wed until your meal out Thursday? squeeze it in Smile

HumphreyCobbler · 20/05/2014 21:38

Hello everyone, I forgot to log my fd yesterday. Had a reasonably successful nfd today and I did level two shred for the first time since the baby Shock. I had forgotten the hell that are plank jacks...

Glad you are feeling better Wilson.
