The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Hi everyone. Popping in to wish the Monday fasters good luck for tomorrow. I won't be joining you as going to a wedding tomorrow (yes, on a Monday). Not drinking as driving so it shouldn't be a disaster, and I will fast in Tuesday and Friday this week instead of the usual Monday/Wednesday pattern.

HumphreyCobbler · 18/05/2014 21:42

hello everyone
I am planning to do three fasts this week. Only if I get some sleep tonight though, I hit such a wall of tiredness over the weekend! I am not breastfeeding enough to get that sleepy hormone so my insomnia has kicked in. Every time baby Cobbler wakes (he stirs quite often) it is taking me ages to go back to sleep. I am sure it will resolve itself

Have a nice wedding Metella

BigChocFrenzy · 18/05/2014 21:54

oops, B&W spotted a link typo, so corrected here: NewYorkTimes article in simple language about Dr Lustig's recent JAMA paper on carbs.

Very well done fasting today, Crimson. Gosh that woman is keen !
I had a very greedy NFD, so joining Spotty in the naughty oinking corner.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/05/2014 22:04

Oh, just seen you are another keen one today, PastPerfect.
I hope your 1st FD went well. It may take a few weeks to feel natural.

nims1981 · 18/05/2014 22:12

yay in my TDEE today (think it's first time ever! )
Well done to all fasters today, that's impressive on a Sunday!
never. mind Shattered are you fasting tomorrow? I will be.
I still haven't lost anything on scales or tape measure but I'm still not giving up. I like the feeling of control I have when fasting as I usually feel completely out of control where food is concerned. I'm hoping the weight will start shifting at some point especially now I'm mfp ing
Going to read your link now BCF. more motivation hopefully!
Good luck all fasters tomorrow x

MazzleDazzle · 18/05/2014 22:21

Well done at coming in at TDEE nims. The scales and tape measure will surely show the results!

Hmmm that article makes sense BC. When I start the day by eating biscuits the hunger is with me, but if I can wait until after midday and have a veg./protein combo, I'm nit hungry. But resisting the crappy carbs is sometimes really difficult!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 18/05/2014 23:29

nims - hang in there. The scales barely moved for me for a few weeks, and it seemed that every weekend I would gain back what I had lost on my FDs that week. The last 2 weeks something has changed, my appetite is genuinely smaller than it was, less cravings, and the scales are starting to show the results.

I had a very sobering trying-on of my summer stuff earlier. I need to lose 2 inches off waist and the same from hips before things are going to fit. Blush I must think of my lovely clothes every time I'm tempted to put something sugary in my mouth Grin

I have done 16:8 both days this weekend, I'm finding that naturally I need a really long fast overnight to feel like my body has dealt with the previous day's food. Not planning breakfast tomorrow, dinner is fish so can have a nice cheese sandwich for lunch.

MelanieCheeks · 19/05/2014 06:36

Hi gang, havent fasted fro a while, so I need to get back into it.

I hurt my ankle last week so I'm off work and hobbling around on crutches. Limited exercise options, so I really need to get the eating part right.

postmanpatscat · 19/05/2014 08:09

Morning all

Just checking in to join the ranks of the Monday fasters. Haven't been here for a while, I have (like melanie) been hanging around the runners' thread mostly. I've run over 20 miles this last week but I still need to fast periodically to keep things ticking over!

I have an apple on my desk, otherwise planning to drink peppermint tea and water and nothing to eat until dinner. Don't need running fuel tonight as I'm still recovering from yesterday's half marathon!

Nice to see some familiar faces here, I'll have a proper catch-up later.

tiggermummy70 · 19/05/2014 08:10

not sure if I will be fd'ing today. Have a funeral this afternoon which will be difficult. My old boss. important for me to show my respects. but didn't speak to him for 7 years. .

vvviola · 19/05/2014 08:15

Good FD so far here. Resisted cake in the office (one of our lecturers is apparently a keen baker, so it won't be the last time - but reassuringly again there was no "oh go on, just a small bit").

Didn't eat at all til dinner. I suspect that may be the best method for me, because I'm prone to start grazing once I start eating.

Dinner was a big plate of salad leaves, some cucumber and tomato, green beans, grilled chicken and a small potato chopped up small. I put it all in to mfp and it only came out at 400 calories.

I'm still a bit hungry (not enough protein maybe?) so think I may have a small pack of rice crackers (60 cal) with my cup of tea this evening and then I'm done.

I've had quite a bit of water/tea/coffee today but I'm still quite aware of feeling thirsty. Could that be a response to the fasting?

rallytog1 · 19/05/2014 08:26

Morning all! FD today, which will mark four full weeks of 5:2 and I am brimming with excitement about my weight loss so far. After last week's comments about being ashamed to weigh myself, I took the bull between the horns and stood on the scales lady Monday. Wasn't a pretty sight, as I'm heavier than I was before I got pregnant nearly 2 years ago (where my bmi was exactly 30).

However, I just weighed myself again this morning and have lost 4lbs! In one week!

I realise it won't be like this every week but even if that's all I've lost in total since starting this WOE, I am astonished that this kind of loss is even possible. I feel so encouraged and motivated to keep going, and excited about what can lie ahead of I keep at it. Thank you everyone for your support and tips so far - I am truly loving this and starting to feel as though this may actually be sustainable.

tiggermummy hope it goes ok today.

jacketpotatowithtuna · 19/05/2014 08:31

Good morning everyone. Ready to start a Monday FD anyone? This is going to be my 2nd. Due to the weather, I don't think I fancy hot meals today - certainly I am not keen on switching my oven on. My most favourite food in the world is cottage cheese (quark) so I will be happy to stick with it. Good luck everyone!

BetsyBell · 19/05/2014 08:34

melanie! PPC! Nice to see you :)

I'm fasting today though had an unusually light eating weekend and lots of exercise yesterday so not sure how this well it will go! However, if PPC can do it after a half marathon (WELL DONE!) then no reason I can't Grin

Sorry you're hobbling melanie Sad, I dread the idea of injury now I've got really into sporty stuff.

Feeling like the sunshine and hot weather we've had here has dehydrated me somewhat so I must make sure I drink gallons today.

dizhin79 · 19/05/2014 08:45

hello all, checking in for Monday fd, only 1 successful fd last week, had a vaccinated baby so feeding frenzy meant I was hungry /thirsty on my 2nd fd. Am too scared to get on the scales this week Sad no nsv or sv this week I think!

Ah well onwards and upwards (or should that be downwards?) Good luck fasters here's hoping for busy days and distracted hunger pangs!

Shatteredmamma1 · 19/05/2014 09:12

Sad tigger hope it goes ok.

I am doing an FD nims. Have had blueberries and a pear and just having a cup of tea. I am absolutely exhausted though so hoping to stick to it. Salad for lunch! I'm not there on the skipping breakfast yet- I do feel hungry and would fine it hard to concentrate at work if starving.

Good luck all Monday fasters!! Grin

violetina · 19/05/2014 10:04

Oh dear, Fd today after disastrous weekend of family, friends and loads of good food and wine, albeit including exercise too.

I am thinking maybe 4:3 is necessary for me.

jacketpotatowithtuna · 19/05/2014 10:16

Sorry for a double post previously. Silly phone.
I have skipped my breakfast and this is unbelievable - I had always thought I would die without one. I am actually fine.

I have been thinking. I read through the previous 5:2 threads and often found people saying "after the weekend of bingeing....", or "after bingeing through Christmas..". Does 5:2 encourages bingeing? Or would we binge over weekend/festive periods anyway?

I did found myself eating more freely after my 1st FD, and this is my worst fear, i.e. losing weight during FD and gaining back during NFD. On the other hand I don't want to count calories every single day as this is what i am trying to escape from. I have counted calories for many years now and have yo-yoed so much that it makes it all pointless.

I have not introduced myself properly yet. I am 35 yo full-time working mum of 6yo and 3yo needing to lose about 5 st (long way ahead!).

Baloostika · 19/05/2014 10:53

Hello all, sorry about ur ankles Postmanpat and welcome to all newbies and repentant 5:2ers.
FD today and I intend to hold on till dinner before eating though I plan on serving on water, tea and coffee throughout the day.
Wishing us all Monday fasters success. Brew

BetsyBell · 19/05/2014 10:54

Hello jacketpotato! That's a good question... I assume that people just mean that they had nice big, weekend family meals with snacks, wine and pudding and call that a binge... Once you've been on this WOE for a bit your appetite (for most people anyway) naturally decreases as you learn how much your body actually needs, so a celebratory kind of eating day (which may have been like most normal days pre-5:2) do feel huge.

However, those claiming to have have binged it might be worth clarifying how you're interpreting that...

I think calling a lovely weekend of "family, friends and loads of good food and wine" disastrous violetina is looking at things the wrong way! You've had a wonderful weekend and because you're 5:2ing it won't affect your waistline in the long run. It's all good. Pre-maintenance, some of my best losses came after just such lovely, indulgent, happy weekends.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/05/2014 11:02

^ Congrats on the half-marathon, very impressive.

Sorry to hear about your ankle, Melanie, frustrating for you.
I hope you can soon throw away the crutches.

I'm having FDs Monday and Friday this week.
Good luck to all fasters today
Smile
Well done on your SV, RallyTog, great start.

JacketPot No, 5:2 doesn't encourage bingeing.
Some of us started with bad habits (like Choc Frenzies) which 5:2 gradually brought under control.
Anyone who is overweight does need to check that their "normal eating" on NFDs is not significantly over TDEE, or they may slow /stop weight loss.

We are supposed to average TDEE over NFDs, but many save up calories for the weekend and don't count cals on Saturdays.
We try not to overdo this, but hey, we're human and life happens.
Smile

That NY times article was well written bigchoc - it's not often meeja actually do science journal studies justice. It's not Lustig this time though... Ludwig is the principle author!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 19/05/2014 11:16

On phone so sorry for spelling!

Tried on clothes again today, not so bad as I thought. Remind me that I shouldn't try clothes on in the middle of a hot day when I've drunk gin :D
There is still work to be done, but it is very achievable before holiday :)

Gumblossom · 19/05/2014 11:27

Bigchoc, I had a look at those links which I found very interesting. Am I right in concluding that it isn't so much the number of calories but the quality of them? that even if you stay within tdee, if those calories are all junky carbs it is a recipe for hunger and weight gain?

I have always liked the idea of eating quality calories but sometimes the empty sugary carbs call my name....

I have had a good fast day. I seem to find Monday's fast easy. I will have some veggie stew soon. it is the second day I find hard.
