The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

I'm jumping back on the wagon.

I tried 5:2 for a few weeks earlier in the year, but I was job hunting and was at home a lot, so between comfort eating and just being around the kitchen I found it really hard.

But I have a job now (hurray!), so I'm doing a re-start. I have about 18kg to lose in total, but I'd be delighted with even half of that. It's a long term goal though - if I can get those 18kg gone by next Christmas and then keep them off, that would be perfect. (Heading into winter here, so at least I'm not worrying about beach wear for a while!)

I cook dairy (and egg) free because of DD2's food allergies, but I've actually found that helps with recipes for FDs because the absence of dairy automatically decreases the calories in some things provided I don't substitute with coconut milk

One question: does anyone have any suggestions for a good FD "something to go with a cup of tea". DH and I have a tradition that no matter how busy things are, we sit down at about 9pm for a cup of tea and a snack. Usually biscuits or a crumpet with honey. I know I could just skip the snack, but I feel I'm more likely to stray if he's eating something and I'm not.

I did think of just reserving the calories for something, but I was reading in the Mosely book that he recommends low GI on FDs, so a biscuit wouldn't be the best idea.

vvviola · 13/05/2014 23:08

Oh sod it Sad just heard office chatter about it being someone's birthday and there being a gather at morning tea time for cake.

I'm only in the job 3 weeks so I'm still at the trying to be extra friendly stage.

How do people deal with cake in the office on FDs?

Eatriskier · 13/05/2014 23:12

vvv feign an intolerance to something. gluten should work! 'oh that cake looks yummy but it would sooooo upset my stomach'

ErrolTheDragon · 13/05/2014 23:19

But that would mean she could never eat cake in the office ever again!

Probably best to have the tea, talk sociably but when offered the cake just say, it looks lovely but I'm really not hungry at the moment.

vvviola · 13/05/2014 23:20

eatriskier I'm working in the health department of a university, and given the conversations I've overheard recently, the cake is probably paleo/gluten free or something Grin.

But yes, if I don't get caught out I might go with "I've given up dairy again" route, as some of them know I was off it when I was bf.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/05/2014 23:25

so long as you then don't have white tea or coffee!

Gumblossom · 14/05/2014 00:07

vvviola, do you feel uncomfortable telling people you are doing the 5:2? I have found that most people are very supportive - they are curious, ask loads of questions, and I usually say - it's all based on science, and I want to live longer. I also find lots of people telling me, "I am doing it too". And a few who have joined the fasting. It seems to be spreading like wildfire at my work now, which is great.

If you are in the health department of a Uni - wouldn't they know about the 5:2? I suppose some people are skeptical about it? Mostly I have positive responses, but when it is negative - I just use the, "well, I feel great on it" and most people respect that.

As for your snack with a cuppa - that's a tough one - I was going to suggest nuts, but on a FD they are very calorie heavy. And fruit has sugar in it that might set off cravings for more (it does for me). I suppose chomping on a carrot or celery stick doesn't really go with a cuppa, does it?I have to go snack free, otherwise it opens up the floodgates of the munchy monster.

Are you in the southern hemisphere vvv? I'm in south west aust. Also hoping to shift the weight before next summer.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/05/2014 00:54

Welcome MillyMolly and welcome back Bad,vvv

vvv Congratulations on the new job, obv a relief for you.

I sometimes feel obliged to accept cake ( I rarely want sweet junk touched by multiple hands). I just smile, say thank you, carry it around a while with a napkin, wrap it up when unobserved, maybe return to my desk (and my bin). I bin it somewhere surreptitiously.

Determined Don't feel bad; we all have the occasional junky day and it sounds like you are doing very well on this WOE.
If you're a fellow geek Smile, read the links on this OP plus a lot on hormesis and IF-related science in the 52ExerciseThread2 OP

Errol I almost never eat breakfast, so if I have porridge it is as pud after lunch, or as a small afternoon meal, to fuel evening training.

OP posts:
vvviola · 14/05/2014 02:02

Gumblossom I suppose I am reluctant to tell people just yet, partly because I don't know the reaction I'll get and partly because I don't yet know if it will work for me.

Of course, what I'd forgotten completely, is that because various people have different research theories/eating theories/health standpoints there was absolutely none of the "oh go on, just a small bit" stuff that has gone one everywhere else I've ever worked. Just "ok" and change of subject. Was very refreshing Grin

(Yep am in Southern Hemisphere - North Island NZ)

Boleh · 14/05/2014 05:18

I'm having a bit if a nightmare time with 5:2 at the moment - finding my health test results had got worse after the last year seems to have triggered a sort of 'well stuff it then' mentality Sad Eating far too much on NFDs and all the wrong things (pizza, crisps, chocolate) that I had really cut back on and was battling to reduce further. My FDs have had sneaky tiny nibbles of junk that have pushed them closer to 600 cals than 500 and with a goal weight TDEE of less than 1600 that's really too high (and not the point of fasting). Life has also got in the way of exercise. Consequently no loss for 2 weeks despite a half arsed effort at adding an extra fast on Saturday (managed less than 800 cals but almost all of them were Pringles Blush

I'm hoping by confessing here I can clamber back onto the wagon, I've still got about 4lbs to get rid of to meet my holiday target and now just over 2 weeks to do it in. Successful fast so far today and veg soup heating for lunch so fingers crossed!

vvviola I occasionally bring cakes into the office as I love baking and shouldn't eat all the results myself Smile. This week I've made 2 cakes for my DPs birthday - one for the office and one for taking out to a friends for dinner, I spent 1 evening baking, another icing and still have the 2nd cake to ice. If you are on a FD or don't want cake please please just politely refuse whether that's just 'no thanks', 'I'm not hungry' or 'I'm on a diet/healthy eating plan/cutting out dairy/gluten/sugar/snacks' etc. please please don't take a piece and bin it! I'd be gutted to know someone had done that too my efforts, especially as DP would be very very happy to eat any leftovers that come home! My line manager has cut out carbs and after she told me once I don't offer her the cake anymore - easy!

HowLongTillBedtime · 14/05/2014 07:03

Morning all , today is my first FD , I am working this morning so that will help and I am going to sit and plan exactly what I can have today .

All tips gratefully received , I have been reading all your stories and it is really helping to get me motivated .

Also today I have time to go to the gym which I would like to but I don't know if it vwould be a bad idea on FD .

Anonynony · 14/05/2014 07:58

Morning all, I didn't manage a fast day yesterday. In fact quite the opposite Sad still all coldy today but would really love a fast day to get me going again, the scales are creeping up!

Any comforting fasty foods you can recommend?

SpottyTeacakes · 14/05/2014 08:15

How about home made soup?

tiggermummy70 · 14/05/2014 08:30

Thanks for feedback Errol. I need to take a photo tonight for you. the show I am doing features a dragon called Errol. and he is very cute. Grin

crimsonwitch · 14/05/2014 08:35

Hi ladies I was just wondering if anyone is unable to exercise? Since I last did ADF I have developed a problem with my pelvis which means even light walking is incredibly painful.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 14/05/2014 09:12

vvv I would say be honest and tell them you are on the 5:2. Best of luck with the new job.

My cousin is emigrating to NZ this autumn, he can't wait.

Today's my first fast day for a while not including last weeks utter failure I've been hovering around 11 stone 1 for a long time, got on the scales this morning and I've already lost 1 1/2 pounds Confused Grin

annielewis · 14/05/2014 09:19

marking place, am struggling to get my head back in to the zone! Am off to read thread for some inspiration! Planning FD tomorrow.

therealeasterbunny · 14/05/2014 09:30

Hi everyone! I am joining you all today Grin

Not sure if this is the correct motivation, but it is my best friends wedding in 10 weeks and my XDP will be there and I need to lose two stone before he sees me! Okay...so two stone may be a little optimistic in ten weeks...but I can try!

I am starting with a fast day, so have eaten two satsumas this morning and am going to drink lots of water and then eat nothing until dinner time...it's going to be a long day!

I MUST go from 12 st 4lb to 10st. I MUST!

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 14/05/2014 09:53

thereal sounds like good motivation to me, 2 stone in 10 weeks sounds tough. Very best of luck.

crimson pelvis thing sounds awful. Poor you.

HotSauceCommittee · 14/05/2014 09:59

Hello All.

I have a question please: I did try fasting but it made me a grumpy arse later on in the day. Does/did anyone else suffer from this? I liked fasting because I hardly had to think about food at all, in that it's much easier to grab a bit of fruit than faff about making diet meals which don't fill you up anyway, but the cooking has made you all extra hungry.

How to counter fasting grumpiness please? If I can get rid of that feeling, I would be happy to restart, but otherwise, it's not fair on my DSs when they get back from school if I am constantly trying not to be a bitch mum from Hell.

almostthereagain · 14/05/2014 10:11

boleh & others who've lost their mojo, it helped me to not beat myself up too much & remember 'don't give up giving up' a giving up smoking motivator but it worked for meSmile The worst is feeling a 'fail' then spiralling out of control. So you've had a slip up, calorific day, made bad choices, don't give up giving up & get back on track today.
Worked out I've got 3 months until bikini exposure, that will focus my mindGrin can't wait thought it was ages away!
Nim & shattered are you still with me on these last 7lbs?

Miffytastic · 14/05/2014 10:49

Hello folks and welcome new people.
I thought I'd stalled a bit and was getting mildly disheartened but I have been trucking on. Not exercising as much as I should I know, but have been dancing again. Anyway, did consecutive fasts monday and tuesday and saw a new low this year of 10.9 1/2 this morning. Wooop!

HotSauce yeah grumpiness is a pain sometimes, other days it doesn't strike me down as badly. I think once you get into the groove it isn't so bad. I think the first couple of weeks of fasts are the hardest. My tactic is drinking lots and having a couple of nuts. FWIW I tend to avoid too much fruit on FDs as I find sometimes I can get a tired sugar crash afterwards.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 14/05/2014 11:09

HotSauce it comes with time in my experience. I always have a proper cup of tea post-school run on a FD (I allow 50cals of milk for a morning and then afternoon cuppa, it really helps me), and that really refreshes me and gives me the needed sanity to push through until dinnertime! It is getting easier each time.

vvviola can you not ask your DH to give up his snack at 9pm for just 2 days a week to support you? It isn't good for him to eat late at night either - a regular 12 hour fast overnight is good for everyone.

16:8 today so still haven't broken my fast from last night. It is now 40 hours since the end of dinner pre-FD, and only 500 cals consumed in that time. Have to say I feel amazing. Did HIIT strength this morning which I think has suppressed the appetite. Dinner this evening is marinated pork chops with roasted new potatoes and piles of veg. Yum.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/05/2014 11:38

vvv I do get socially pressured to eat cake, so I have no scruples about quietly binning it to avoid aggro.
Try a polite refusal, but if you feel pressured, you are entitled to bin it, if that makes life easier.

Talkinpeace's advice to think about the grubby hands that have touched it has put me off communal cake / bix even on NFDs. It's her fault !
Grin
HotSauce Grumpiness can be a symptom when you are still getting used to fasting. So, persist and the problem should go.
btw: I found I need to avoid fruit on FDs. May help to avoid insulin spikes and hunger or mood swings.

Welcome Realbunny , 28 lb in 10 weeks sounds a very tough target.
5:2 produces an average weight loss of 1lb per week. If you have 2 stone to lose, you might lose the first stone more quickly than that, though.

You could try ADF if you are really in a desperate hurry. It is much tougher to do, but would give 2lb per week, provided you keep within 120% TDEE on NFDs .
Try to avoid junk and alcohol, because they slow down weight loss and you are in such a hurry.
Also, do HIIT and strength training, if you don't already. You can build up to 5-6 days per week, plenty of help on 52ExerciseThread2

If all else fails, buy a sexy new pair of stilletos for the wedding and kick your XDH very hard in the goolies

BigChocFrenzy · 14/05/2014 12:58

Great SV, Miffy It shows again that the fat does come off (eventually) if we persist
Grin
Well done on the HIIT Alibaba and the fasting. Yes, HIIT has been shown in human studies to suppress appetite, whereas steady state / moderate exercise tends to increase appetite.
HIIT is also better at accelerating fat-burning and improving metabolism.
