Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 39 - Chocolate-guzzling is NOT wanking: It should only be done in public! Learn healthy habits with our friendly 5:2 / IF support group

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, or ill, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Katebeckett
we've had quite a few accidental pregancies on the threads
because the beauty of 5:2 is that it involves taking control of the whole of your nutrition system (for the better)
one of the bigger risks in pregnancy is maternal obesity and nutrition
therefore if you get those dealt with all should be well

also there is no problem with maintaining healthy eating (like 16:8) during pregnancy ... its what slim people do after all

Poppy. As Bigchoc says. Avoid low carb on FDs to start with. Unless you're used to low carbing that is.

Argh. I'm a bottomless pit today!!! Clocked up 900 cals in Yo Sushi eating mainly sashimi (spensive that was) alone. So now over TDEE and still flaming hungry!

Not thirst because I've had about 3l of water.

I was mystified until I felt a twinge and realised its TOMT week. Oh yes. Hungry monster is here now.

I'm still planning a FD tomorrow. However with TOMT and DC being on half term, DH being away and the stinking cold I now have, having barely recovered from scarlet fever, it has the potential to go downhill quickly.

I shall come and post here for a moral boost and kick up the rear to help me through it. Wink

MrsF, I can really relate. That was me last week. God it was a tough week! But it ended well with AF turning up (despite a million symptoms conspiring to make me think I could possibly be pregnant, what a numpty!) and a wonderful weekend away on my own. Was lovely. Didn't count calories at all, but ate well I think.I didn't drink very much and only had a small chocolate fest on very nice, very expensive chocolates for a treat. I mostly ate fish whilst out, so at least I ate healthily.

Fast day today, as it is a friend's birthday tomorrow and we're going out for a drink. Oh my goodness, I have tummy grumbles this morning. I will have to drink some more water I think.

According to the body frame calculator I should be 57-62 kgs. Bloody hell, that seems like a long way to go (74.4 at the moment). But at least it will be relatively easy with this WOE, it's just that I shall have to be patient.

I did go shopping and treat myself to some beautiful new trousers for work, a size smaller than usual Grin so I am well chuffed with that. And I also bought a new dress (admittedly a loose fitting style) that is two sizes smaller Grin Grin

It was actually fun shopping for clothes and not gasping at the image in the mirror.

I had better go and cook up my low cal soup for lunch.

Thanks for the new thread, love the title Smile

Bit of a indulgent weekend and I had intended to have today as an FD but I'm away with work. Tiny bit apprehensive of going somewhere that I don't know when I'll be fedSad You'd think at this stage a touch of hunger wouldn't bother me but problem is I need to concentrate, not like a noalnfd where I can make a cuppa, I'll be trapped on a room. I think I'll reschedule for tomorrow. Now I'm all excited about my breakfast, ahh it's the little things that float my boat. First brekkie since last Wednesday, have a great day Monday fd'ers

Kate Beckett, how's your first day going? yes I am starting today!!!!! Well to a point. I've had cereal, got up at 5 (instead of snoozing til 5.30) and did some exercise and to eat I have chicken breast and a banana so I think I'll have gone over by then and I've promised DP I'll cook this week so will probably eat a bit of gammon and salad for tea. Or just gammon. Or nothing.

I had a bad moment last night. DP cooked me chicken, bacon and sweet chilli pasta and I was so hungry before hand I binged on toast and wasn't hungry for pasta but ate it anyway. I also spent the night ensuring there were no more sweets in the house to tempt me so today should be easy because I was so piggy yesterday! Hmm

Hi all, well I havnt been on the thread for a while and I also havnt been fasting. I weighed myself today and I'm 10.5 Hmm I managed to get to 10 stone before Christmas and after Christmas started between 10.2-10.3 but couldn't get back down.

Last week I started exercising a little so I think now I need to start fasting again. I just find it hard to continue when I'm not loosing but it's better than putting on weight.

I'm jus not sure what to do Confused

Report
BetsyBell · 17/02/2014 08:51

positively you know what to do - fasting works for you - you got to below 10stone and since Christmas maintained at a good weight (even though it was a bit above where you want to be).

And not fasting means putting on weight again...

Get fasting, get exercising!

If it makes you feel better I haven't managed to get back to my pre-Christmas low of 9.10 either. Like you I've been hovering at a few lbs just above. BUT if I stop fasting I will put weight on again (happened 2 weeks ago) but when you start up properly again you'll lose those extra few pounds quickly.

Bear in mind we're fighting against WINTER here - just think how much easier this is going to be when our bodies aren't craving stodge. I also have the odd moment when I remember how much fun this is at the beginning when you get losses every week and sort of miss it. But I don't miss being several stones overweight and I'm very happy to have found a WOE that has led to some stability in my weight.

All my ideal weight calculators suggest I should be around 9 stone, but honestly I don't think that's ideal for me. However, I know I can be fitter and leaner so I'm focussing on that.

Focus on the positives positively, not the numbers on the scale. And if the concept of 9 stone is the make or break then start weighing in kilos and readjust your thinking.

YOU CAN DO THIS! Make today a fast day and think about how great you'll feel tomorrow.

And put the scales away for a bit!

eveesmummy good luck with your first fast day - 5am?!?! Is that your usual wake up time?

I suspect cereal might make you feel a bit rumbly quite quickly so make sure you've got the kettle on standby before you reach for anything more calorific Grin

Salad and veggies are very very low in calories so pile up on those as it's surprising how filling they are (and so good for you of course). I personally need to see a good plate of food so lots of greens and salad (flavoured with lime juice, ginger and pepper) with a small portion of protein are the way I go every time.

Home made veg soups are excellent - can be made as thick and filling as you like and yet still only work out around 100 calories a bowl. Supermarket 'meal soups' are a very useful - and filling - calorie counted standby.

I try and challenge myself to eat as nutritiously as possible on a fast day - make every calorie count!

I have yet another cold - actually don't feel as ill with this one though with far more obvious symptoms (snot oozing from every pore - and yes, that image is there to help the fasters get put off their food today!) so who knows how well I'll be fasting today but I will at least eat as nutritiously as possible. I think I might make myself a veg soup with the following:

leeks
celery
fennel
butternut squash
carrot
2 or 3 tomatoes
garlic
ginger

flavoured either with miso paste or bouillon and a sprinkle of dried seaweed flakes to serve.

Last time I calorie counted an equivalent soup it was about 90 calories for an extremely satisfying bowl full.

Had a bit of a break last week as I was suffering with a cold - so no fasting, and no exercise either!

Felt good enough to get back out running yesterday in the sunshine, and I'm back on the afst train today. Whilst doing an inventory of the freezer i found a tub of home made ratatouille, so I've defrosted that for dinner.

Monday nights are running training - usually hills. I didnt go last Monday, and the week before I found the hills were really tough. I might eat something small before tonight's session.

Betsy. Snap. I am your lurgy twin Hmm
Barely over the scarlet fever and wham another bug in the house.

I can't even take paracetamol or nurofen for it as I am having a series of daily blood tests at GP this week to check on my progress after scarlet fever. And they specifically told me to avoid all analgesics and alcohol. Hmm

Wonder if they will cancel it for this week as I'm unwell again?

(Wallows in misery) Wink

DC on half term and expecting museum trips. They want to go Nat Hist but I cannot be arsed to fight my way through the London traffic to get there and queue for hours to get in.

So they will have to make do with royal naval and Cutty Sark at greenwich which is 20mins from the house. (Mean mummy).

Off to feed the vampires at the GPs.

Yes it's my normal wake up time. Confused

But then I can start work at seven and finish at 4.30 (3pm on Fridays) and see DD before bed and get some real quality time in. Every cloud...

Yes I'm hungry already but I only rumbled once I pulled up outside work. So I think it's habitual as normally I eat soon as I get to work Shock

I will not eat til 11 when I have chicken and banana and 12-12.30 is my dinner so I'm power walking my ass off Wink

I was quite shocked at the Nat Hist queue last time we went (hadn't been for years previously); we went round the corner to the queue-free Sci Mus instead!

Actually today we have to go to the docs for something that's hugely worrying me re Ds1. Feeling anxious but don't want to talk about it RL in case I worry other people too (or I'm stressing over nothing) and don't want to let on to DS I'm worried either Confused. Good luck today evees !

I'm doing okay so far, not at work this week so I didn't get up til half 8 and I haven't had breakfast yet. Currently on my 2nd mug of hot water.
I'm looking forward to a coffee after brunch (1egg omelette with spinach) as I can't drink it on an empty stomach - I get terrible cramps!

Tummy is definitely rumbling , but I'm trying to ignore it for as long as possible!

Dp and I have planned our first ever Aldo shop for today... I think that was a dumb idea for my first FD but oh well!

Planning on having a green bean salad for dinner tonight, any suggestions of a small but tasty amount of protein to go with it?

Urgh, I had a blow out at the weekend - fine on food but around 1000cals of alcohol, I'm pretty cross with myself after my good efforts for the last couple of weeks. Back up 3lb over one weekend :-(

Today fast day has gone OK - pea souple and carrot sticks for lunch and lentil and bean chilli with broccoli for dinner. I now have 50 cals left, so what would people do? Is it good to just come in a bit under or should I eat up to my calories, small apple/carrot sticks & humus/options hot choc?

Good luck to everyone fasting today, especially first-timers. I was thinking about making today an FD but realised there's a drinks thing after work so it's not a good day for it. Just as well, because although intending to do 16:8 I was ravenous by 11.00 so I've just eaten my lunch! Going to try to stay within TDEE at least today. Finding it hard to climb back on the wagon - I feel like I'm clinging on to the back of the wagon as it speeds up instead of comfortably seated inside!! But I suppose that's better than standing watching the dust as the wagon recedes into the distance without me.

Betsy, I do hope there is good news about your DS - do PM me for hand-holding if it would help. I'll be thinking of you at the docs.

EveesMummy I hope your boss is OK. What a dramatic start to the week.
