Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 33 - Counting down to Christmas (and NOT thinking about the impending chocapocolaypse. Yet)

BetsyJingleBells · 16/12/2013 08:21

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through the fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

eatriskier’s thread has some lovely inspiring stories which are worth checking out if you want some motivation to get started or keep going through a plateau. Please add your own too.

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

bigchoc Nnd is until the end if term for me. I do nibble the very occasional biccie in the staff room but no frenzies at home and no weekday booze (Xmas party excepted).

My sedentary Tdee is only 1500 odd calories so I must bear this in mind over the holidays when I slob out as I'll easily double or triple that over Xmas. So the plan is, avoid endless and mindless nibbling that seems to kick in after Christmas for me and get out for some runs instead.

mindful nibbling will be fine of course... Grin

Would love to achieve SWATH but am expecting not to. January will bring the usual abstinence I expect.

b&w has a thread about this - I should c&p this there to remind myself over the holidays!

Confused as I hadn't commented on anyone's baps but then I remembered about the imposter [hmmGrin.

Accidentally weighed myself this morning. I am not happy with the fact I did it or what the scales said. Just had toast. Why? I always feel crap after but I have a meeting with the police and can not faint during it due to hunger. Completely forgot I had bought myself some cereal.

Feel a bit blue but I think TOTM is due, difficult day today, feel fat and the kids have been arguing already.

Will read all I have missed when I am back from my meeting.

Hope everyone has a good day.

I have a horrible cold and feel bleurgh, but as I hardly ever breastfeed any more I might get some proper cold remedy with decongestant. Our at least something to squirt up my nose.

Haven't decided yet whether to fast today or not. I might do an 18:6 as I just want spicy herbal tea at the moment.

MORNIN'! Xmas Grin

Calling all Tuesday fasters (megaphone).....

... I'm looking at you Earslaps....and don't try to hide Rubbish - you too!

I am feeling pretty much like the pair of you by sounds of things. I am just about to make a coffee and there is a Mincepie near the kettle that is screaming for my attention.

I am determined though! (determined face)

I am already feeling so puffy and bloated from my carb fest at weekend with few drinkies and don't think I'll have a berry merry Christmas if I steadily get worse over next two weeks.

So! Am taking opportunity to slap a few fd in before next week. Will help to reduce any gains come Jan, as well as meaning I can still feel the new found positivity about body through weight loss, instead of flat and fat during the festivities.

Join me!!!! Let's do it.

Keep the kettle topped up.

DRINK WATER

CLENCH

Mega work-avoidance post alert!

How do you not think about food constantly? Ever since I decided I needed to look at my food intake its all I ever think about. Getting upset because I cant have those cakes or bicuits... Biscuits at the beginning of my 5:2 journey I deprived myself of nothing at all. If I wanted a big slice of cake for breakfast on a NFD or a chocolate bar for dinner on a FD I had it. Because I was still counting calories on all days (except weekends) I simply accounted for the treats in my daily calorie allowance eg 500 cals for FDs and up to 2000 cals on NFDs. Around 4-6 months in I found my tastebuds changing and the cravings for chocolate and cake diminished especially during the weekdays as that's when I make a more conscious effort to eat clean or as healthily as possible. I don't count calories anymore and that has certainly helped me not obsess think about food all the time.

Regarding exercise, you don't need to motivate yourself. Just make it part of your routine. Make it a given that you're doing it, like brushing your teeth or going to work or doing housework. That way exercise becomes a matter of habit rather than a choice. IYSWIM. Don't overthink it... just open the door and go for a walk when the time is right today. Even 15 minutes to the shops is good (walk briskly!).

Welcome hopefulgum. I think reading through these threads daily will help keep you going. It's a very difficult time of year to be resuming 5:2 so don't be too hard on yourself :) And you can always fall back on 6:1 or mini fasts to get you through December...

sweetiepie I'm a little pear shaped potato loving peasant from the north... Sorry, but that really made me laugh! Am Angry at your MIL on your behalf though. What a thing to ask! As hard as it is, ignore! I have the reverse with my family (not my DH etc but my mum and her side of the family in India) in that they always comment how "skinny" I am becoming and how I should put on weight. They are all overweight with big bellies; many of them have type 2 diabetes. I get Angry at them and no longer post photos of myself on Facebook as they always comment negatively (compared with my Western friends and family who always comment positively).

Also sweetie I definitely wouldn't fast again today. 700 calories yesterday is fine (especially as you're 7 weeks PP and BFing). If you consistently undereat you will damage your metabolism and over time you'll find you'll have to eat less and less to lose or to maintain weight. Your body simply won't trust you that you'll feed it well and so will hold onto as much as it can. Moreover, 5:2 seems to work best when there is a clear calorific difference between days.

Betsy mindful nibbling... I like that Grin. I'll be doing alot of mindful nibbling through the festive season.

Toffee hope everything goes okay for you today Thanks.

Right, I can avoid work no more. If you see me on this thread before 3pm kick me out!

Morning BennetGirl - think we're all struggling a bit, but if we don't try we'll def fail a fd, whereas this way, we might just surprise ourselves!

Biscuits - what Bssh said. I do think tastes change naturally. But I also think that if one falls off the wagon for even a short time, it can make it so much harder to stick to. Hardly surprising really when sugar is addictive!!

B&W has said some great stuff on this subject. It's not your fault! Your body is programmed this way.

Just keep chipping away!

Oi Bssh Stop lurking!! Get off the thread and back to work lazy bones! Xmas Grin

Thanks for all the support.

I did it! Hurray! I had a successful fast day. I am not sure it was 500 calories, may have been a little more, but I think I got close.

I was planning another fast day on Thursday, but I have a Staff Christmas dinner that night, so I thought I might have another FD tomorrow.

Has anyone else done consecutive days? How did it go?

I feel it would be good to get them done and dusted because of the festive celebrations Thursday, Friday and on the weekend.

Today I drank alot of hot water with a slice of orange. It helped me get through along with bucket loads of tea and fizzy water later in the day.

Sweetie, I can relate with regards to your family. My MIL came to visit me in hospital, the day after my DS was born, "amazed" at the size of my tummy, beaming as she told me that she was back into her pre-pregnancy jeans when she left the hospital. DH's family have always been very mean about people being overweight which, sadly has contributed to a great deal of angst for my DH and his sisters when it comes to weight. One DSis has had stomach banding as a result. I'm glad I can use the 5:2 WOL to feel well, I would hate to resort to an operation.

Report
MrsFlorrick · 17/12/2013 11:46

Hopeful.
Do you think your MILs tale of leaving hospital in pre preg jeans is another one of those typical MIL amnesia things just like how their DC spoke fluently at 6 months and walked at 3 months Wink

I think she may have left hospital in jean but I'd be surprised if they were pre preg ones. I mean look at Duchess of Cambridge. Super slim with tiny bump during pregnancy and she wasn't quite ready for skinny jeans for at least a few weeks.

Sweetie. Don't let it get to you!!! You really didn't gain much during pregnancy. I think less than 2 stone is amazing. You will lose that in no time honestly.

Please enjoy your baby lots instead of worrying. Besides you're 5:2 so you're dealing with it. Grin

Couldnt decide on whether to fast or not today, but having checked the scales and seen myself in the mirror it will definitely be a NFD as I am losing weight far too quickly and now have stretch marks.

I have always generally eastern very healthy food and then put on weight due to crazy binges of crap and by taking the pressure off myself I've somehow gained the ability (which I thought was a myth) to eat chocolate in moderation.

So I am going to go into town to finish my Christmas shopping and have a nice lunch out.

Must be something in the air today, because I felt unusually hungry too. I actually ate a solid 300 cal lunch, but that was after 21 hrs zero cal since my chocolate Advent calendar yesterday.

CrossFit training this evening, which is always very strenuous, so I may have a protein shake before or after.

RIGHT

listen up folks

I was thinking while swimming today (yes, it happens)
in part about Peplum's comment too fat to photograph
and I realised that skinny pics can be both motivating and demotivating.

The thing is
not all people will ever be slim
that is just a fact of life
but they can be healthy and toned and stand proud.

There is a Facebook page called "Yoga Inspiration"
most of the people on it are wiry Californians
BUT
with the Christmas season, and breaks from gyms brewing,
take inspiration from this lady
big-gal-yoga.tumblr.com/
because she is fit and proud and huggable
not a bad way to be

Everybody should take a party dress photo - even if they do not post it
because if you do lose the weight, the before picture will be your prize.

Right so I have been for a run this morning. 4 miles.

I went into the kitchen for lunch and was about to prepare some food for myself (soup), but questioned if I was actually hungry and decided I wasn't so have got my water from the fridge and sat down with just that.

Thanks for the words of wisdom Bssh and Turkey I think Im being too hard on myself. Ive never deprived myself of anything and did count it into my calories before, but now Im thinking too much into it.

So for the next 2 weeks I am going to do 16:8 and have a couple of mini fasts and stay under 1000 cals. Today is one of them. Then when I start work on 2nd Jan I will go to the 5:2 properly then (might start on Mon 6th Jan though)

I dont have a party dress Tip but I do plan to take a picture of myself anyway. Just haven't got round to it yet. Will have a look see what photos I already have of myself.

According to my paternal grandmother, not my Mil but another possible case of amnesia, all of her babies were potty trained by 6 months old or something equally ridiculous.

I remember her telling me when dd (8) was a baby (under a year).

This said in a you young (clueless) mums of today kind of way.

Two things occurred to me......why don't we see you more often?.. and must've been a barrel of laughs in your house! Xmas Grin

Good day! BigChoc and SouthEast.....

..today is definitely proving to be a struggle. I agree there must be something in the air.

I am constantly fighting the urge to eat today. Something that has been working (a bit) for me is to keep saying... 'if you do this [insert task] then you can have something.' The idea being that I am getting things done and by time I have finished I think 'oh ok I can probably go a bit longer.'

If I make it to bedtime, I will feel so proud. I also think it will make thurs fd easier to achieve.

Having said that.... I REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT THAT MINCEPIE!!!

Not sure who else is fasting. Seen no sign of Earslaps or Rubbish since this morning.

Not sure if they are skulking in shadows or if we've lost a few comrades in the field!

NEVER LEAVE A MAN BEHIND

Oi Fasters!! Where are you? What's occurring??? Time to 'fess up!
