Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks everyone.

Thinking back to the beginning, I did wonder if a) could I actually fast and survive and b) would I just put all the weight back on as usually happened once I'd reached goal.
Well as I said up thread, I've maintained within 2lbs for 2 months and it's been very easy. For those of you thinking ahead and dreading the thought, as I did, please don't worry about it as it really is easy compared to other times.
If us 'oldies' on the maintaing thread can go through all that you are experiencing now, and one year later celebrate reaching goal (and passing it in some cases) and also maintaining too, then you can all do it too and join us over on the 'maintainers' thread Smile

Oh and welcome yecart. That's exactly what I said when I first de-lurked but I soon found that I was drawn into posting more often and now look, I can't stop Grin

Thanks for the welcome tip, although you are bound to be giving me a stern talking too at some point!

Some stats for you all:

I am 43 and 5' 4"
I started on 27th May at 15 st 9 lbs Blush BMI 36.44 (Morbidly Obese Sad) size 18/20

I have yo-yo dieted for a lot of my adult life, but nothing has been sustainable. My best weight loss was on Atkins where I lost 4 stone but over the last 5 years it has all crept back on and more.

I had sworn to myself that I would never diet again, and am not lacking in self esteem so although I knew I was unhealthily overweight I was not particulary bothered (however I hadn't actually weighed myself for a couple of years so was a bit Shock when I did get on the scales)

However, I am getting married in November 2015 and decided that there was no way I was getting married in a size 20 dress. Came across some info about 5:2 on tinterweb and then found you guys.

I set myself a target of 11 st 7 lbs as I have never been below this since I was a child by Nov 2015 loosing 1/2 lb per week.

Sorry for the long post, I'll be back later to update you on where I am now, 10 weeks later.

Welcome, Yecart !

While avoiding lunch I went for a walk to get some sun (so much easier to fast when it's sunny!), and happened to go past Joy. I never used to fit in their stuff (they only stock up to size 16). Thought I'd pop in and look round, as I got a size 16 top from them a while ago which fits fine. Found a lovely pale pink blouse but none in 16. Thought I'd try the 14 on as good motivation for fasting - and whaddaya know, it fits!!! Made my day (so I had to buy it of course ...)

Happy fasting everyone :-)

My 8 year old just ran away. he had been threatening it and so I took all the keys but while I was in the loo he found one and went. I was about to really lose the plot when he appeared. I have bollocked all three of them as they have been winding him up. I am sorry to just dump this here but need a hug. going to get them ready to walk round to the meadow but feel my heart is going to pound out of my chest.

I feel like a bit of a stalker as I feel that I know you all really well but you don't know me yet.

Hiya, cartman! What would you like us to know about you? Grin

I'd just like to announce that, for the first time in living memory, there is no vegan chocolate in the house! No chocolate covered marzipan, no biscuits either!

This is a huge change since I posted about my huge stash before Christmas.

However, I will have to get a couple of bars of Lidl's dark chocolate when I go shopping this afternoon - for work, obviously! Grin

I'd also like to announce that my daughter is now 37 weeks pregnant with her first - so, were the baby to arrive today, it would be officially full term!Flowers

Thanks everyone else for the welcome, I don't think I can type as fast as you lot post!

At week 6 point on 8th July I had lost 13 lbs and was BMI 34.28 (down into the obese category whoop whoop.) This included a blip where week 4 I put on 2 lbs, week 5 lost the same 2 lbs, due to bloody TOTM! Worked out I would reach my target if I only lost 1/2 lb from then on by April 2015, a whole 7 months sooner than planned.

Week 9 point on 29th July I had lost another 4 lbs, so 17lbs in total.

Have had a house guest from Canada last week and this so have only done 6:1 on days he was off exploring, but on the other 4 weekdays I have only been having dinner so that we can go out and I can eat what I like. Didn't expect to loose anything but wanted to maintain. Surprised myself yesterday though when the scales said I had dropped another 2 lbs!

So now, 10 weeks in and I have lost a total of 19 lbs!

Very happy days indeed Grin

Oops, sorry, cartman - I'd mostly written the post when I was interrupted by my wife. I was supposed to be sweeping the kitchen floor!

So the post was just hanging there.

Here's a [hug] for you, MissS! Please don't worry about dumping on here - we've all (most of us) been there.

Here's another [hug]!

My first FD I had the headache from hell, however realized it was caffeine withdrawal so was easily sorted next time.

Logged everything that passed my lips on MFP for the first couple of weeks and quickly realized it was not necessarily a bad diet, just far too much of it! (who was it on the early threads that had to remember a 400g pack of cheese is NOT A SNACK?) Thankfully between MFP and the 5:2 effect on appetite I was able to reduce my portion sizes considerably

From the beginning I had a small lunch and larger dinner with (except for the first day) approx 6 mugs of tea or coffee with ss milk.

By week 3 I found it easier to go without the lunch and save the calories for a bigger dinner.

By week 7 I found it easier to go without anything so FD is usually water only apart from the tea and coffee. I find I am just as likely to want to munch in the evening if I have dinner or don't, either way I have to fight the urge so may as well not bother!

I have found it is much easier to get through if you keep busy.

Hi to all 5/2ers. 5 weeks in and it's going well (8lb gone as of 10 days ago and weigh in due Friday). What I'd like to know is how come that on fast days I would gladly eat my own toenails (yesterday) but today don't feel like anything (despite having the equivalent of Cadburys warehouse in the fridge)?!

Also, can experienced fasters answer this....due to do a night shift tomorrow (wed) very busy in a hospital (have to eat or would die - though I'd be in the right place!) Planning to have lunch and dinner tomorrow (about 1pm and 6pm) then start a 13 hour shift. Planning on a cup a soup about 1am and cereal 5am (thurs morn) then hoping to starve from then, eat nothing when I get up thurs afternoon and go through to Friday lunch time, will have starved (literally) for about 20 hours. Does this count as a fast day?

AngieM2 · 06/08/2013 16:59

*Actually my maths is awful....that would be more like 32 hours without food! Man alive! Please tell me it's a fast?

MissS
I have seen your posts on another thread and you sound very strong and wise. One of my boys left home 20 years ago on a tiny wooden bike - terrifying! Your system will be awash with stress hormones at the moment, maybe tomorrow sit down with your dc and set out your expectations for their behaviour and the consequences ( good and bad ) - there's a long way to go yet in the summer hols !
I had 4 boys and no family support and needed to channel my inner 'strong mummy' on many occassions !

And well done with the fasting

Report
AngieM2 · 06/08/2013 17:19

mehefin not done it on nights before , this will be the first time, but would rather try and not eat during my waking hours of 3-9pm on Thursday as opposed to all day Friday so I'm up for the challenge! Will report back Friday when I'm hoping to wake up looking and feeling like Kate Moss!
