Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Ooooo cheese. I love cheese. Yum yum.

I love cheese and crackers but not sure my body likes crackers Sad.

As it is Saturday and I am well below my calorie count I have just had some minstrels but annoyed as didn't listen and had about 4 too many. Never mind. It doesn't mean I will give up.

EagleRiderDirk · 10/08/2013 21:18

Thank you!

tip cake and wine is calorie free on your birthday right? Wink

As a random birthday present, OH has decided to join our ranks. Well maybe not on mumsnet per se, but in 5:2. I've set him up on MFP and I think he's been a little shocked at how bad his choices are sometimes (as he decided to track but not change anything till his first fast). We had lunch out and his choice was pretty much equal to my all day excl wine and cake. At least he has a higher tdee and doesnt like booze as much as me in his favour

JB30 · 10/08/2013 21:21

Hope you're enjoying your birthday Erd. Enjoying a 16:8 nfd with too much chocolate and wine Grin Did my run, lasted til lunch to eat, perfectly happy to indulge. Although I have decided to stop the wine and replace with choc, no point drinking my cals! My 8 hour window is a little flexi though Confused

Talkinpeace · 10/08/2013 21:22

ERD Wine on birthdays is definitely calorie free.
Well done on getting your DH to join in as its definitely easier together

lilackaty · 10/08/2013 21:25

I am going on holiday next week & plan to start this properly when I get back. I usually lose weight on holiday anyway so hopefully it will act as a kickstart for me. Smile

Talkinpeace · 10/08/2013 21:27

YAY lilackaty - welcome aboard. Have a great holiday.

saffronwblue · 10/08/2013 23:34

I woke up yesterday half undecided whether it was going to be my 4th fast day or not. Soon I had cracked and had rescheduled it- it made me realise that I need to be much more definite and clear with myself about what I am doing before I am suddenly pottering in the kitchen.

swallowedAfly · 11/08/2013 07:44

morning Smile

well done to all who are doing so well - especially newcomers just settling into it.

i'm 10.1.6 this morning so damage limitation seems to be working. just bouncing in the early tens.

worst comes to worst i start back at work 3 wks tomorrow and that will be my next fast day.

swallowedAfly · 11/08/2013 07:45

forgot to say in the interim i am trying to do a bit of work on my arms. i have two big jars of pasta sauce and whilst sat watching things i'm doing various little exercises. probably very half arsed method but it's something Smile

postmanpatscat · 11/08/2013 07:55

saf I now have a mental picture of the Dolmio workout! Are you hoping to progress to a whole parmesan cheese in each hand?!

Off to Lanzarote this morning but we have wifi so I'll still be loitering. I've deliberately lost a few more pounds ready to regain them over the next two weeks of all inclusive. My gym kit is coming too and there are TWO treadmills in the hotel gym so DP and I have nicknamed them 'his' and 'hers' in anticipation of 99% of the guests not going near them.

Have a good Sunday!

EagleRiderDirk · 11/08/2013 08:54

saf I started with 2 cans of soup and progressed to 2 jars of pasta sauce. then oh bought me some aerobic weights. I think he was a bit peed off with random jars and tons being left on the dining table

swallowedAfly · 11/08/2013 08:57

Grin mine are beside the laptop erd, where i can't avoid seeing them.

i should try that squat challenge really as that is bigger muscles so probably effects the fat/muscle ratio more but i'm a bit worried about ending up with great big chunky thighs and an even smaller bum.

MissStrawberry · 11/08/2013 09:43

Morning all

Just starting to prepare a roast dinner so won't eat until then.

I am actually finding it harder to eat 1800 ish on normal days than I am to do the fasting Shock.

BetsyBell · 11/08/2013 13:26

Hello everyone! I've missed too much to catch up but have had a wonderful holiday, too much food (of course) and Monday will be a fast day. It will be very very hard thanks to being used to eating a regular supply of ice creams, increasingly large meals etc etc.

Today however, a swan-song indulgent roast then back on the wagon. Only 2 weeks till my next bikini wearing holiday Shock

I am not going to weigh myself.

Thanks to GreenEggs for sorting out the new thread :) Flowers

Talkinpeace · 11/08/2013 15:11

Yo! Betsybell
for all newcomers, look and feel utterly inspired by her photos

Oddly, I've found having had more than one overseas holiday already this year Blush the Monday morning return fast is THE MOST satisying.
Have just booked my summer hol - long story - those who know me on FB will understand - so should REALLY not be eating cheese now but .....

Talkinpeace · 11/08/2013 15:13

OK converts,
how do we explain to the eejits on the chat threads that BMI of 30 is not something to be "happy with" and that they CAN make the difference.
The brick wall is leaving imprints in my forehead

wildwater · 11/08/2013 15:23

Hey people. Just checking in from the wilds of Patagonia.

All going well with fasting & food, even if some difficulty adjusting to eating my evening meal much later than I would like. Apparently I am whistling into the wind if hoping to change ingrained habits of this country!

Best things are: we are eating hardly any processed food, I am preparing practically everything from scratch - even baking our own bread. Can't go too far wrong there.

Yesterday however I baked an enormous chocolate brownie, as practise for the one I will make for our host's daughter's birthday next month. It came put really well (my sister's famous recipe) and though I did eat a couple of bits, stuff this sweet is not my thing so am not tempted to keep on going.

As time goes along and 5:2 becomes just what we do as a matter of course, it becomes clearer that putting off eating until as late as possible on fast days is the best thing for me. If I eat 'breakfast' then I feel like eating more.

I like the concept of my body doing its housework, 'hoovering' around all the nooks & crannies, finding little bits & pieces of rubbish to tidy up and get rid of...that's what's I think is going on when I feel that passing moment of 'wooziness'.

Yesterday we were late walking to catch the bus. I RAN full speed to the corner to see if it was coming...didn't get puffed, and it felt just great!

Cheers to you all :)

EagleRiderDirk · 11/08/2013 15:42

I was happy with my bmi of 30. but only after it having been near 37 Wink

BetsyBell · 11/08/2013 16:14

Tip By the end of the holiday I was literally dreaming about fasting - got into that rut of over-eating through habit and didn't really enjoy it that much (how quickly we [I] revert...)

On the subject of not being happy with BMI 30 - as I was wondering about in bikini top and shorts on hols, feeling confident for pretty much the first time ever in so few clothes - I thought about people who con themselves into thinking it's ok to be overweight. It isn't, we can all (barring medical issues etc) achieve a healthier, leaner version of ourselves just by eating less and less often.

On the fitness front, I surprised myself by getting up early every morning and headed out for a scenic run or sea swim, realising that part of what was a holiday for me was being able to do that without waiting around for everyone else to get ready/want to go out. This is not a part of my personality that existed previously with BMI 27+ (was going to say 30+ but I think that change came more recently).

The early morning exercise also meant that I ended up eating breakfast every day. Started out nice and healthy at the start of the holiday but ended up being toast slathered with butter and marmalade. On the other hand, there was a big group of us and breakfast was a great social gathering so worthwhile in a different way.

As I said upthread, I am not weighing myself but I know there is a fair amount of extra poundage. However, I also know that I can get rid of it again with some good fasts and stopping the holiday snacks & weekday boozing.

I know it's hard to get back into but I also know how brilliant I'm going to feel within a few days of it.

Talkinpeace · 11/08/2013 16:22

Betsy
I'm lucky, DH does 5:2 as well, DD is 15 so happily skips meals and DS (13) eats till the sky falls in
but yes, when we were in Crete at Easter, we all enjoyed saying "this is a fast snack, eat later"
it is SUCH a mind change
France soon .... nom nom

JB30 · 11/08/2013 20:11

Shocking couple of days Confused Really have to get my weekends back in check. Looking forward to FD to get back on track. Cannot believe its nearly Monday again, Sunday blues are at a peak Sad I'm going to need to give myself a kick up the bum, at least with an fd tomorrow I'll keep myself so busy I won't have time to navel gaze
Just input my food into mfp and it makes for scary reading.

Talkinpeace · 11/08/2013 20:15

Oi ! JB WTF ya playin at gal Grin
Je suis stuffed and slightly arf cut
but am fasting like billyo between now and my ferry booking later in the week

HellesBellesIsRenamed · 11/08/2013 20:16

Really struggling to fast during the school holidays. The ladt two weeks, my weekly average has been 90% of tdee. Though this is an improvement on how i used to eat, I must get back on track. My waist is STILL 40"

I think the problem is cooking two meals (ds will not eat anything with flavour but fd without herbs and spices is unthinkable).

Any words of wisdom/inspiration?

JB30 · 11/08/2013 21:23

Tip I am an animal, chocolate/crisps/wine, the snacks you can eat between meals Grin Mfp count of 2500. So won't be going near the scales until I've 2 good FD's under my tight belt
Helles don't despair, just keep making the effort, sometimes you just need 1 good day to spur you on. How about something like chicken fajitas for a meal, lots of spices for you but no tortilla, no spice for ds but tortillas for him? Chicken/veg/spices, maybe wrap in lettuce leaves? Be a good FD meal no? Or maybe do some 16:8's if you can't manage full FD?

sausages51 · 11/08/2013 22:34

saf love the Dolmio half arsed arm work-outs. Now why didn't I think of that? I'll have to do half-arsed arm work-outs but using tinned tomatoes. Hilarious ! :-)
