The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

MC the dress is really lovely but what on earth were you doing dancing with Chris Hollins, am very impressed!!

MelanieCheeks · 28/07/2013 10:16

Good going SAF!

Ha, Chris was guest of honour at a Clic Sargent ball back in 2010 - one of the auction prizes was first dance with him, which I won! He's absolutely charming - he said "Shall we do a waltz?" I said, "I think we need something a bit more up-tempo - I can do a bit of salsa", and he said "Oh crikey I haven't done salsa since week 3!" We looked at the band, they said "Shall we play Valerie?" and we said "Go on then, we'll busk it!"

So we did.

Cat98 · 28/07/2013 10:36

Thanks both! I'm going to try alternate weeks on 5:2 and 6:1 for a while and see how I get on! Feel v good though Grin

BetsyBell · 28/07/2013 11:48

Looking fabulous melanie - very Mad Men!

saf & cat Woohoo!

Accidentally had a ludicrously low eating day yesterday - started with a huge breakfast then nothing then some gazpacho type soup for supper. As a result I am ravenous today!

Holding out for lunch (no snacking Grin) rather than diving into the fresh baked bread as what I really want is protein, and lots of it.... chicken bits marinading away ready to pop into the oven as soon as it's socially acceptable to feed the family.

If it were just me I'd be chomping away at those chicken drumsticks already.

melanie that's a great story I would have shuffled around looking embarrassed!

Weigh in (the official one!) yesterday put me at 12st 4 so back to where I was 2 weeks ago, not too bad as TOM due any day from the feel of it.

Had what I thought was a huge dinner last night as we were cooking for friends, but seems big but not awful now I have put it in Mfp. Lunch was good, I skipped breakfast and didn't snack so whole day is safely below tdee.

Think I will fast today as next week is very hectic and we leave for hols on Saturday. Been to the gym and done some very challenging interval training so feeling quite virtuous. Now back to clearing out the house!

thaliablogs · 28/07/2013 12:06

Ps on Mfp I notice I seem to be very low on iron and calcium in my diet, should I be taking a multi vitamin do you think or adjusting the diet?

MelanieCheeks · 28/07/2013 12:54

Those sort of details aren't terribly accurate, I wouldn't use the MFP database to count them. Do you think you might be low on iron or calcium?

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 28/07/2013 12:56

Fd today, had porridge for lunch with some raspberries. Not been feeling too well so have been putting off fasting this week though trying to eat lightly. I had to go clothes shopping yesterday for an interview and was so embarrassed to have to buy a size 18 jacket Hmm. Onwards and downwards I guess.

postmanpatscat · 28/07/2013 12:59

thalia I take multivits and Feroglobin as a precaution - can't do any harm, I figure!

thaliablogs · 28/07/2013 13:47

melanie my usual rule is that given I eat a fairly healthy and varied diet, I don't worry about taking vitamins, only did it when I was ttc and pregnant etc.. But the figures on Mfp were so low (18% of recommended) that it made me wonder. I think for calcium I used to eat a 0% total Greek yogurt w fruit for breakfast, but have been skipping breakfast on this WOE so a big part of my calcium has gone given I don't take milk in tea or coffee. Iron it had never really crossed my mind.

Dotty342kids · 28/07/2013 16:12

melanie you look amazing in that dress, well done!

And saf great to hear your news too - ignore any pesky bounces back into the 10's as you know they'll only be temporary (assuming you have any at all!).

Fast day for me tomorrow and once I'm back from zumba (where I have to sip water unless!) I'm going to try out TIP's "only drink a large glass of water every 1.5hrs instead of constant sips* thing and see what I think of it Smile

Emmabryant123 · 28/07/2013 16:31

Fast day tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
Lunch: cup a soup
Dinner: ham and egg salad.
Two slices ham, one boiled egg, cucumber, cherry toms, pickled red cabbage, white onion, tiny bit of coleslaw . That leaves me at 395 calories.so will think of something else to have lol
Have made some tuna sandwiches for work on Tuesday already for lunch yum yum.

Dotty342kids · 28/07/2013 16:34

Fast day for me too. Nothing till teatime then moroccan chicken plus a little bit of couscous. Comes in at approx 450 cals including the couscous by my reckoning Smile

swallowedAfly · 28/07/2013 16:41

i'm having a weird one where i actually had to force myself to eat half a can of beans (couldn't face anything else) in the end today. had eaten too little over the last couple of days to just turn it into a fast. going to try for eggs and beans and sausages later or some such protein dense combo.

i go through rare periods of just not being able to face eating but knowing i need to. then again i also go through periods of knowing i need to stop bloody eating but not being able to Grin

good luck to all fasters today. and thanks for well done and woo hoos. because i've been undereating and overdrinking i doubt this is sustainable 9somethings but at least i've had a glance and know it is possible.

swallowedAfly · 28/07/2013 16:42

also had a lot of exercise of the only pleasurable variety of late so that might have aided things. tmi obviously Grin

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 28/07/2013 16:45

Random FD today as DH in office, just done shred and 20 lengths of local pool, feel ok but a bit spaced out.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 28/07/2013 16:46

Ps love Melanie in nice frock!

ELR · 28/07/2013 17:18

swallowed ha ha that always causes weight loss! I always know when one of my single friends has a sudden drop in weight!

swallowedAfly · 28/07/2013 17:26

i also find it's the only thing that really changes your shape and sorts the tummy out. can't fault it really.

thaliablogs · 28/07/2013 17:39

Really suffering this afternoon, headachy and feel nauseated. Think it must be this salts imbalance thing from swearing loads on a fast day, although I consciously put feta on my lunchtime salad to get a bit of salt. What does everyone else do to keep in balance?

EagleRiderDirk · 28/07/2013 17:46

Thalia have mental image of you swearing your salt away Grin I tend to have a cup of Bovril, or if really bad an oral rehydration drink.

thaliablogs · 28/07/2013 18:04

Ha just realised typo above swearing=sweating! Might be better the other way round though!

headintheclouds · 28/07/2013 18:14

saf great loss , I also hit 9 st 13 on my WI this week which Im thrilled with( wanted to be 9 stone anything before I went on my holiday mid August) . TMI but im TOM anyday now so I know that Ill be 10 st again next week ! BUT i know now that my new target is not too far away now which just motivates me even more. Am loving all the photos of all the beautiful people! so motivating and I MIGHT even put before/ after of myself once I get to my happiest weight.

Talkinpeace · 28/07/2013 18:17

thalia
you only need salt over and above what is inside normal food if you are exercising HARD for HOURS at a time in EXTREME heat
we need MUCH MUCH less salt than we realise
sweating exudes as much salt as it does water : unless you were getting clinically dehydrated

there is salt in butter, bread, cheese and most processed food more than enough for the normal person without adding any more at all

I go back to my point earlier, you need to 'manage' your fluid intake, ignoring the stuff in the press about athletes and listening to your body - and giving it the gaps in input to talk to you

HellesBelles396IsDeeplyUncool · 28/07/2013 18:30

Horrendous blowout this weekend - 3 days of calories (many liquid) in two days has left me reaching for the gaviscon.

I'll be glad to get some sleep tonight and I fancy having an extra fast next week cos I feel rotten. Especially at the thought that this weekend's glut was a standard weekend until quite recently.

I managed to shred yesterday though not today due to exceptional fragility so that's something to look forward to tomorrow.
