Starting on Monday - anyone want to be my buddy?

I'm planning on starting next week - it's my birthday on Thursday so want to wait until after then!

I'm 32, 5'7 and have about 5 stone to lose. I have a 10 month old DS and I have recently been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid gland, which slows the metabolism and makes it harder to lose weight - I started treatment 2 weeks ago and am already feeling much better, so I'm hoping to find losing weight a bit easier. 2 stone of this weight has been gained since having DS, which I feel ashamed about, but have been feeling exhausted and depressed (due mostly to the thyroid, it turns out) and have compensated by comfort eating. Confused

I really hope this will be a solution to 8 years of yo-yo dieting, which have taken me from a size 10 to a size 18 Confused A little nervous of the hunger, but I know it won't kill me.

Does anyone want to be my buddy, for a bit of mutual support?

Kick spaniel you can do it. Off swimming now and weigh in.

Wearytiger · 05/08/2013 09:43

Weighed in today and I have lost another pound. That means six pounds in four weeks. I am happy with that as I really do eat whatever I want on NFDs. I must stop weighing myself mid week though as earlier in the week it was two pounds of which obviously one came back on yesterday (roast chicken. Cake. Enough said).

But still, I'm pleased. Having my cup of tea now. Will check in later, good luck to everyone!

JetBlack · 05/08/2013 11:29

Thanks everyone, I get a bit lost on the main thread so it's nice to come on here. First fast day and so far so good. Going to try and hold on as long as I can [fingers crossed]
Although I'm a bit of a pepsi max addict, do I need to avoid these or does it not really matter as they are zero calorie?

PeasandCucumbers · 05/08/2013 12:32

Wow 6lbs is great weary , well done! As I was driving to work this morning I realised that I hadn't weighed myself again this morning! Am trying to convince myself that NSV's are what I am really after but I do want an idea of the lbs too.

Still no cals here yet Grin Keep going everyone!!

butterandcrumpets · 05/08/2013 16:53

Seem to be struggling a little today but am realising I haven't drunk as much as I usually do on a FD. So just had a pint of water and a big mug of green tea and feel better already. Still have 450cal left and dinner (mushroom stroganoff, chicken and salad) is currently being cooked. I hope everyone is doing well.

feggyart · 05/08/2013 17:10

Weighed in this morning at 17 12 so loss of thirteen pounds overall. My goal is a stone a month in these early stages so on track for that.

Finding the fast interesting. I am going to come in at 650. And I'm ok with that.

Hope all doing ok.

PeasandCucumbers · 05/08/2013 17:49

I only had 64 cals at work then had a tin of WW soup when I got home at 76 cals and an apple (50 cals?)as I was starving. Now cooking dinner and am pleasantly surprised that Linda McCartney's red onion and rosemary sausages are only 64 cals each so am having 2 with carrots, broccoli and sugar snap peas. Will then have around 110 cals left for later in the evening. I am definitely happier with my planning of food today and really think I will have got more volume than I did last week.

I agree butter that a drink often really does make a difference and tides you over.

Keep going everyone and resist the evening munchies!!

butterandcrumpets · 05/08/2013 18:12

So, I just decided to pack in my fast day. Had a phone call from dh who is coming home early from work. He is a farmer and has worked through the last two weekends and usually doesn't come home before 10pm on a weekday. Due to the rain (thank you!!!) they can't pick and decided to call it a day. Pizza, wine and a movie it is - am not regretting this one Grin.

WhyohWhyCantIThinkofaFabName · 05/08/2013 19:36

Well my first fast day has been much better than I expected...I was really quite worried about what to expect...had decided after reading lots of info of what people find works and I decided that I would wait as long as possible before I ate expecting that I would cave in just after lunch...well it's now been 24hrs 30 mins since my last meal and dinner will be ready in 5 mins!! I am over the moon...I've been cheerful, have strung sentences together and haven't eaten the cat!! Dinner is 450 cals. It's a weird feeling to have actually felt in control of food all day!

PeasandCucumbers · 05/08/2013 20:19

Great to hear your first fast has gone well why Smile

Butter that's lovely, hope you had a lovely evening and enjoyed your pizza! We have to take these opportunities when they come along and it is nice to think that this terrible weather has resulted in a nice surprise for someone!!

Trying to resist the temptation at the moment. The DC are in bed & DH is out so I am a bit bored and I think that is making me want to eat. We are going to Ireland on Thurs for a wedding on Fri so I need a successful FD today and Weds so that I can go away knowing I have achieved my target for the week.

Wearytiger · 05/08/2013 22:05

Whyohwhy I think that feeling of control can be a little bit addictive (in a positive sense). You will love waking up tomorrow and thinking that you can eat whatever you want (within reason!)... I bet you will want less than you think!

butterandcrumpets the beauty of this diet for me is that it is so flexible, I hope you really enjoyed your pizza and time with your DH!

Good luck to everyone else and especially Spaniel as we all owe her one for starting this thread!

WhyohWhyCantIThinkofaFabName · 05/08/2013 22:40

Ooh Wearytiger I think you are right!! It was such a liberating feeling...I've just done my food order online to collect tomorrow and I've made far better choices than normal even though I know I can go a little off the track if I want to...purely because I feel in control.... My dinner tonight was heaven on a plate!!! It was simple but tasted like the best meal ever!! I'm hoping I can sustain this feeling. Keep up the great work everyone...and yes thanks for the thread Spaniel...the other thread was a little too big for me to keep up and I really enjoy seeing how everyone here is getting on.

PeasandCucumbers · 06/08/2013 07:16

Well I did it Smile

Did you fast yesterday spaniel? It must be harder some days when you have a baby, especially if you haven't had enough sleep but I hope you managed to get back on track.

Well done to everyone else who had a FD yesterday.

butterandcrumpets · 06/08/2013 07:55

Thanks everyone, had a lovely evening with dh. The thing is, as I hadn't eaten all day the pizza and a couple of glasses of wine weren't really a blowout calorie wise. So no harm done. The sun is shining today so dh will be stuck in the fields and dryers till goodness know when so I will have my fast day today.

I hope you managed to fast/have a low calorie day yesterday, Spaniel.

AphraBehn · 06/08/2013 09:17

Well done everyone, we're getting the hang of this now!

Another 2lbs off for me making 7lbs in 5 weeks. I've never stuck to a diet for 5 weeks before! Did a FD yesterday, my easiest one yet, so thinking about 4:3 this week. 'Cos I'm hardcore like that. Not so hardcore that I'll get off my arse and go for a run though

JetBlack · 06/08/2013 11:33

Well it was my first FD yesterday and it was surprisingly ok. I got a little bit hungry around 2pm but I just drank lots of water and kept busy and it passed. Before I would have panicked at the feeling of hunger and shoved some rubbish in my mouth. I had my 410 cal meal at about 6:30pm and then had a packet of quavers at 9:30 as they are 88 cals as I'm such a snacker at night so I didn't feel deprived either.

However DP offered me a cream cake after tea and I said no Shock Unheard of!

PeasandCucumbers · 07/08/2013 08:55

Morning everyone!

Glad to hear your first FD went well jet Smile

Well I am due to fast again today which I don't feel too optimistic about but I am going to give it a go and try and use my few days away as my motivation.

I finally weighed myself this morning. I have been wanting to do it first thing in the morning but I haven't wanted to do it the morning after a FD. I have lost a few lbs I think, probably 3 but can't be totally certain on that as I don't have a definite start weight, but I am happy anyway. I have done 3 FD's so far, upped my activity a lot and although I haven't counted calories on my NFD's I have tried to be a little bit sensible

Have a good day everyone, especially those fasting

PeasandCucumbers · 07/08/2013 23:10

Well another FD over Smile I shall now go away for the weekend and not think about food until Sun when, depending how excessive I have been, I may do another fast.
Have a good weekend everyone, spaniel hope you have managed to get back on track. Off to bed now as have to be up at 5!!!

butterandcrumpets · 08/08/2013 08:56

Morning everyone! FD for me today. Have a nice weekend Peas.

Wearytiger · 08/08/2013 09:02

Good luck everyone! I am fasting tomorrow as DH is out tomorrow evening. Have a great weekend peas!

JetBlack · 08/08/2013 11:11

FD again today. Feel like I'm going to struggle more today, DC are playing up and DP is off work with a bad back and hip and we're not exactly getting along lately so it's going to be much harder today.

Need to remind myself that food doesn't help stress.

SimplyTes · 08/08/2013 11:34

Hi everyone, FD today, feel strong, just back from circuits at gym and drinking pints of warm water and lemon to make up from half bottle of wine and burger last night!

So far six pounds off...............good luck everyone Smile

Wearytiger · 08/08/2013 16:58

Jetblack at least on an FD there's less cooking to do! Think of it that way!

JetBlack · 09/08/2013 11:23

Well I got through it on less than 500 cals, just had to keep busy and stay out the house. I can't wait to be back at work, it'll be so much easier to keep busy and keep my mind off food.

I've noticed from fasting that I don't snack as much, if at all, on non fast days and make much better meal choices. I also seem to be inadvertently avoiding carbs. It's amazing how something so simple can change your thought process.

I hope everyone is doing well and feeling great! Smile

Wearytiger · 09/08/2013 12:25

Well done jetblack. I'm starting back at work next week and also think it will be easier. I'm mumsnetting from a cafe right now and the smell of the food is a trial! But I've got my c
