BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi there, I'm very new to this board and have decided to give this a go. I'm having my first fast tomorrow and then again on Friday. I hope you don't mind me asking a couple of questions (which I'm sure have been covered but this is a massive topic). Firstly, my BMR is 1790 and TDEE is 2461....on my 'eating'days, do I try to consume as close to TDEE as possible or a certain amount below this? It seems a lot to eat if I'm eating 2461 calories 5 days a week. Secondly, I work part time nights (1 or 2 a week)... When I finish my last shift at 8am and go to bed then get up at around 3pm, can this be my fast day? I'm aware that I'm not awake much that day so would it be a cop out for that to be a fast day? Thirdly, can you set MFP so that it knows you're following 5:2 cos I've put my food in for tomorrow's 'fast' and it keeps annoyingly telling me I'm not eating enough! Help.

Talkinpeace · 02/07/2013 20:43

alwaysauntie
I do not drink during the week - unless I can think of a good excuse.
and actually babysauraus should probably push the boat out with champagne for that ....

AngieM2
WElcome,
MFP cannot cope with fast days.
Set it to maintain your weight and then just track across the week.
Is that TDEE set with low exercise levels?
Either way, aim for just below your TDEE for the first week or three while you get used to fasting.
Yes, you can sleep part of your fast day, but the most effective trick seems to be to aim to do 36 hours on 500 calories (details in the tips and hints thread)

babysaurus · 02/07/2013 20:44

Thanks! However, as we sort of had that news a while back (waiting to hear was what made me fall off the fast wagon after just one week to start with!) I don't feel as if its the proper celebration, if that makes sense!
Perhaps being good all day but then having a few drinks later won't be all bad, will it? Will it?

babysaurus · 02/07/2013 20:44

This is where Real Life gets in the way!

Talkinpeace · 02/07/2013 20:48

Pah. The world turns on fizzy!
Possibly save it for Friday night then Grin

See, they say I'm useful and full of TiPs tips
and now I'm being a bad influence .....

AngieM2 · 02/07/2013 21:02

Hi Talkin, my ex recipe is set at light but I'm actually more like moderate but felt that would give me too much to eat. Blimey! 36 hours on 'fast'...now we're talking 'hardcore'!

AngieM2 · 02/07/2013 21:02

*stupid iPad, should say excercise level.

babysaurus · 02/07/2013 21:35

Am slightly pissed. It's not my fault, its Talkinpeace's

QueenBoudicea · 02/07/2013 21:36

Wow - that news definitely deserves celebrating babysaurus!

Nfd for me. Have eaten approx 1600 cals today but still approx 200 left to my tdee - I'm feeling a bit peckish and don't know whether to have a snack or not. Tomorrow is a fd so would rather give in to cravings today rather than tomorrow :o

BetsyBell · 02/07/2013 21:45

lexington Yes - I used to feel absolutely awful after eating the day after a fast - dizzy and sick. I soon learnt that carbs were not a good way to break a fast and now I tend towards fruit and yogurt with a muesli sprinkle. The dizziness stopped after a few fasts but I'm careful now anyway.

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 02/07/2013 22:05

baby hurrah! That news is worth celebrating well :)

ceebeegeebies · 02/07/2013 22:08

Right, have had the easiest FD so far, it has been a breeze (and I normally find them VERY difficult). However I have just eaten a walnut whip for no other reason than it was here Blush and have justified it by thinking I was going to eat it tomorrow anyway so all I have done is spread the calories out. Why, why, why?? I was having such a great day aswell Sad

angelabbie · 02/07/2013 22:14

hi all, had a very strange day today. Yesterday was a FD my 7th since starting and I had a great day with a cauliflower curry and fruit eaten at 7pm. Felt fine when I woke up and had lunch of tuna salad and treated myself to a belgium bun and some strawberry liquorice. I came home around 4, fed the kids and at 5 felt so tired and a sick that went for a lie down leaving hubby to it. Promptly fell asleep which I never ever do and woke up feeling totally out of sorts. I then ate my body weight in toast and feel better. I generally only eat up to 1500 cals on NFD and only fruit for a put, could it have been the excess sugar?? Very strange.

AphraBehn · 02/07/2013 22:15

I've just done my first Fast day! It feels safe to say that now I am in bed.

I had 600 calories, decided to have the extra 100 calories as I was really hungry and thought it would be damage limitation. Learnt a few lessons, I will need to be more prepared in future.

Breakfast was a poached egg on 1 slice of toast, no butter at around 10.30am. Next time I will have 2 eggs/1 toast which will be more filling and should keep me going for a bit longer. Dinner was king prawns cooked in garlic and soy sauce. It was nice but needed something else so I will have stir fry/noodles next time. As I was still hungry, I had an apple and a slice of bread. Hade 2 cups of regular tea and two cups of green tea in between meals to take the edge off. Although I am still a bit hungry, I can still taste the tea so don't feel the need to eat.

Today had gone better than I expected although I'm glad that tomorrow is a regular eating day!

I've enjoyed reading your tips and advice as well Smile.

EagleRiderDirk · 02/07/2013 22:17

ceebee all so well until the dreaded walnut whip!!!!

I've had a very easy fast day too. Even turned down birthday cake. Been very busy though so time disappeared.

Hope all fellow fasters found it easy too, and same for tomorrows fasters.

mttum · 02/07/2013 22:19

2nd fast day of the week completed (polishes halo).

Not sure whether to fast again on thursday or call it a week now. Either way, looking forward to breakfast tomorrow Grin

akarucker · 02/07/2013 23:00

aphra well done on your first fast. The first one is definitely the hardest, and sounds like you did really well. 500 cals isn't a magic number, it's a guide to aim to eat about 25% of your TDEE, so I wouldn't worry about going over...yet.

Perhaps next time you could stretch breakfast until a little later (you may have noticed that once you ate, it triggered your desire to eat even more), and maybe cut out the toast (add another egg or piece of ham if you need it). Carbs tend to make you hungrier later. Lastly, your stir fry sounds lovely. You can always bulk it up with a load of veg - double or triple the veg rather than adding noodles (again, those carbs sometimes make it harder).

Well done though.

headintheclouds · 02/07/2013 23:44

sotired ive added the recipe for the curry onto the recipe thread.. there was previously a similar curry by Hugh Fearnly -Whittingstall on the thread which looked good but I cant link to it anymore..which is why I cobbled this one together from what I could remember.. it was very good and even DH liked it and hes not doing 5:2 and likes his curry with meat usually

Breadandwine · 03/07/2013 00:17

Wildwater great to see you back - and with such positive news, as well.

Good to hear you've mastered the maintenance bit, and you know you can shift those other few kilos anytime you put your mind to it.

Look forward to reading your blog. Smile

The best thing about my 'new' body is that I feel so fantastically healthy. I can actually run, fast! At nearly 63, I feel like a teenager.

That mirrors my experience exactly. I no longer walk anywhere without breaking into a skip and a jog, I have so much energy to spare. I have a post on my blog entitled, 'Walking is no longer enough'!

I'm finding fast days quite easy but I do struggle on NFD's it's like once I start eating I can't stop

Cluckingmad that's what we humans are programmed to do - that is, eat when there's food around! It's why we all got fat in the first place. Have a look at this post on the subject, on my blog:

nobreadisanisland.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/52-diet-intermittent-fasting-aand.html

And here's a thread I started, on the 52fastdiet forum, with other posters' thoughts on the subject:

Hi all. Wednesday morning here and fasting, and feeling sorry for myself. I always do at this point - I'm not starving, or anything, just aware that there is no yummy food in my day to look forward to. Usually I can trick myself into - well, I'll fast till lunch and then buy those nice noodles I like - and then I get to lunch and it's not that many hours till dinner so I make it.

If I can shave another pound off from last Thursday's weigh in, I'm back to 60kg - which is my first goal, and I got to briefly and freakishly a month ago and have been working my way back ever since. I guess that's worth trying for.

akarucker · 03/07/2013 06:48

Trying my first mini fast today. I have such massively different mind sets on FD and NFD that I'm not sure what it's going to be like. Plan to fast all day, but eat normal dinner tonight.

babysaurus · 03/07/2013 07:26

Meant to fast today but I may do it tomorrow instead, will have to see how it goes. Due to slightly fuzzy head I've had one piece of toast with marmite and am now, thankfully, back to normal

AngieM2 · 03/07/2013 07:31

Watching with interest today as I start my first fast day. Got 2 gym sessions today, one and half hours this morning and one hour tonight. Planning on a homemade spinach and potato soup around 1pm, then banana about 5pm before second gym class and apple when I get home. Thats 308 caolories. Drinking water and tea in between and got enough for a cereal bar and maybe grapes if I'm desperate (which I will be). Wish me look.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 03/07/2013 07:42

Good luck! Two gym classes is hardcore. Is that normal for you?

4pm here, just realised I haven't planned the DDs tea so now I'm thinking about food at the worst time of day. V close to throwing it up for the day, but would hate to have gone through a day hungry for no reason.

Cat98 · 03/07/2013 07:57

Wow angie I think I would collapse with 2 gym classes on a fast day! I chased ds round soft play hell yesterday during my fd and tired quicker - good luck!

You can do it tortoise - keep going!

Aka - I did a mini fast Monday and managed it, though I did have a big bowl of chicken pasta followed by strawberries and cream for dinner!

Fasted yesterday, another successful fast - my trigger points are early afternoon (when I usually have chocolate) and when making dinner (often have wine!) I don't find the evenings as bad as I did before because the next day and freedom is approaching, so I'm ok with my peppermint tea!

Anyway - I've just weighed and I'm seriously chuffed. 8 st 7.5 - I started 4 weeks ago and I was 9 st 2! HOWEVER I know it's just after an fd, so it might be lower than the true reading - but last week I weighed at the same time after my first fast and was 8 st 9.5, so hopefully that does mean a 2lb loss this week ish?
I'm expecting a rise back up after the weekend, but hoping and assuming it won't be too high? My target was 8 stone 7 (but after the weekend not after an fd) so not long to go hopefully!
