The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi, not really been able to keep up with the thread over the past week. I'm still fasting and had a loss of 1lb, would have liked more but oh well any loss is good. The most surprising thing I have found since fasting is the amout of energy I have has increased so I'm now able to do more exercise.
I'm finding fast days quite easy but I do struggle on NFD's is like one I start eating I can't stop Blush

Dotty342kids · 02/07/2013 12:29

ooh tortoise that does sound nice. Was that a FD dish or a NFD dish?

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 02/07/2013 12:34

NFD, but I'm going to try and adapt it. The dressing was Dijon mustard, honey, balsamic vinegar and some spices - I don't like sweet food, but a bit of sweetness on a pile of spinach is bliss. It would be fantastic as a salad - wilted spinach, a few walnut pieces, strawberries, some low fat feta and a bit of quinoa. I will go and do a calorie counted version and report back!

Dotty342kids · 02/07/2013 12:47

ooh, thanks tortoise, sounds great. You might want to post it on the 5:2 recipe thread too? Smile

Neitheronethingortheother · 02/07/2013 14:31

Good fast day yestereday, ham salad for lunch and salmon stir fry for dinner. did eat 3 cookies this morning though that I had in work to bring home for kids lunches. just had brown sandwich with ham, chicken and millet salad for lunch and half a box of cherries.

Was intending to do a fast day tomorrow but boss has invited me to lunch so will do it Thursday instead.

Grin EagleRider !
A lot of my random thoughts are over on the hints and tips thread.
I gues because my job involves nudging people in a particular direction who are often set in their ways, it just rolls over onto here !

16:8 basically involves skipping either breakfast or supper - breakfast is easier - so eating between noon and 8pm
it links into my permanent rant about snacking ....

akarucker · 02/07/2013 15:55

TIP out of interest, what is your job, because yes, your techniques definitely roll over onto here.

Talkinpeace · 02/07/2013 15:57

I'm an auditor but I specialise in controls and procedures rather than numbers : getting people to do things the right way to make their organisations more efficient ...

virginposter · 02/07/2013 16:02

saf your body has been through a big trauma. Don't push yourself too hard, it's early days and you need to recover. Maybe a little break will do you good. You know that when you're ready and strong enough 5:2 will be waiting for you and it won't take you long to get back into the swing of it. Smile

AmericasTorturedBrow · 02/07/2013 17:41

Hello all

Previous Maintainer slipped a bit after doing a huge charity bike ride a month ago and need to get back on track pronto! I won't be able to keep up constantly but will do my best - can't believe how many people there are doing this now!

Started 4:3 in September to shift the babyweight. Got from 144lbs to 133lbs ish by Christmas, then by kinda half heartedly carrying in but kinda aiming to maintain got to lowest weight of 130lbs in May. Hardcore training kicked in then doing a week long ride pushed me back up to 135lbs ish (though I was slimmer so goes to show what a difference muscle mass makes) but now I'm back to 140lbs and my clothes are tighter and I haven't exercised since the ride stopped, eeek!

So - back on 4:3, back on Shred this weekend, back to power yoga and swimming once a week and a long (65miles+) ride once a fortnight, all which I know I can fit in around the children and constant stream of visitors.

Aim of 126lbs by 11th September when I fly back to the UK, which gives me a bit of wiggle room underneath my ideal weight of 128lbs

Phew that was long, but cathartic!

LexingtonBear · 02/07/2013 17:59

Hello all. Do you mind if I ask a slightly indelicate question - does anyone else ever feel really, really sick the first meal after a fd? I find that if I have a 'treat' breakfast the day after a fast (eg a Brie and tomato croissant and large latte, which I was drooling over this morning before tumbling seamlessly into nausea) then I feel violently sick straight after. But if I have a 'good' breakfast (strawberries, black tea, porridge), I'm usually fine. Is it just something to do with digestion/stomach capacity after a fd? Sorry, just wondered if anyone else had experienced this.

Thanks!

swallowedAfly · 02/07/2013 18:02

tortoise - how exciting! i can honestly recommend it. i seriously have not had even a twinge in the neck, shoulder and side of my back that was hurting daily since having it done. plus other less practical stuff like clothes and things.

i did a 19hr total fast and decided that that would do. haven't eaten anything yet but have opened a beer so will no doubt want a meal shortly. decided i will just do long fasts then no calorie counting today and tomorrow. i'm just not up for full fasts at the minute and between recovery stuff and my period being due i am ok with that.

have an appointment for consultant and all the screening stuff now so going to put that away in my head till i get back from holiday.

Dotty342kids · 02/07/2013 18:04

saf that all sounds very wise. Keeping on the habit of fasting will make it much easier when you decide to do what you were doing pre op (eg fast including the up to 500 cals thing). In the meantime you can focus on post op recovery and, more importantly, your holiday Smile. Where are you going and for how long?

swallowedAfly · 02/07/2013 18:05

egypt for two weeks - we're in the sinai so well away from all the disruption that's going on (as i keep having to tell my mother over and over Wink ). thank you.

Dotty342kids · 02/07/2013 19:03

ooooh saf how brilliant! Hope you have a great time.

headintheclouds · 02/07/2013 19:18

Hi All,
first fast of the week and Ive just eaten the most delicious squash, lentil and spinach curry ( all the curry talk on Friday!) 150 cals the lot, and a half a peshwari naan at 165 cals.. Mmmm.
I ve actually found todays fast quite easy and I was rather dreading it because of the long gap of NFDs since Thursdays fast last week.I think because Id done so well last week Im just not expecting that to happen again for a long time( 3lbs off in a week was spectacular for me.most weeks I lose 0.5lb or nothing!)
saf we're on hols to Turkey in a few weeks , well away from the disruption in the major cities ( so I also keep telling my mother over and over..)
dotty well done on the stone loss, doesnt it feel amazing ? I was euphoric on my WI on Friday when Id shifted a stone
wildwater will be really interested in your travel blog when its up and running.
hope all todays fasters are doing well...

headintheclouds · 02/07/2013 19:29

lexington Ive not felt sick at all the next day , but I cant remember the last time I ate breakfast since this WOE. I m up at 0600 every morning for work and cant face breakfast that early..just have a cup of tea.
But also for the last couple of weeks Ive been doing 16:8 on my NFDs as well so not eating until 1230 anyway. Sometimes on a weekend I might have a piece of toast with butter but thats about it....
I have read a couple of posts over the last few months where people have experienced the same as you the next day . Im sure someone will be along soon to help /advise.

Talkinpeace · 02/07/2013 19:34

Lexington
I'm another non breakfast person, but I do find that the first meal after a fast needs to be not to calorie dense (unless washed down with wine)

BsshBossh · 02/07/2013 20:00

Lexington I've not found that. But I dofind my stomach has shrunk. I can't eat as much in one sitting anymore. If I do eat a large portion my stomach actually hurts and I feel physically sick.

SoTiredAgain · 02/07/2013 20:03

headintheclouds. Do you have a recipe for that curry? Sounds delicious.

ELR · 02/07/2013 20:09

Hi all just checking in, been away for a few days and eaten and drank loads! Had a good fast yesterday and weighed in this morning only 3/4 of a lb more than my lowest weight so quite please!
Not caught up on all the posts yet but will do so shortly, just wanted to wish everyone a good fasting day for tomorrow.
saf glad you are back, enjoy your holiday.
tip I agree about the meal washed down with wine!
lex maybe it's the fat content it's quite a rich meal compared with the second option you mentioned.

babysaurus · 02/07/2013 20:13

Ladies, is this cheating...

DH has had confirmation of his job (he was previously freelance) and his annual salary has gone from 24k to 55k! The offer was given 6 weeks ago but not confirmed till now. He is due back tomorrow night, 10.30, so is it cheating if I break my fasting early (ie have a drink with him when he gets home?) I won't have anything more to eat / drink after about 10 tonight anyway but not sure if that counts - help!

Talkinpeace · 02/07/2013 20:20

alwaysanauntie · 02/07/2013 20:26

bssh and mttum thank you for allaying my fears about massively over eating on Sunday. I know tomorrow's another day, I suppose I was just shocked at how easy it is to have so many unnecessary calories - it's not even like I was particularly full! Hmm

ERD love the idea of "TIP's tips"! Grin

Lexington no, no nausea here, but have always been a breakfast person. I can't stand brie though - maybe too much dairy if you're having it with a latte too? I can't manage yoghurts or cheese as it always makes me feel ill (apart from on pizza...)

Welcome newbies and re-joiners. Hope fasts have gone well today :)

alwaysanauntie · 02/07/2013 20:29

TIP are you drinking it or suggesting it? Wink

baby if it was me I'd be cracking open something cold now instead of waiting! Fantastic news - congrats to your DH. And no, definitely not cheating, news that good is rare, enjoy it!
