The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Fab news SAF so pleased for you. It was a frustrating wait but I agree with aka the 11s are now in the dim and distant past. Grin

newbiefrugalgal · 11/05/2013 09:44

Hello, second fast day today.
First one wasn't so good when my soup plans for dinner were scuppers by a dinner brought by a friend.
Today will be better!

NoForkNKnife · 11/05/2013 09:57

Hearing all these losses is very motivating. I have a hell of a lot more to lose than most of you though.

Had first NFD (if that makes sense) and seem to have gained overnight! Sad! I really should step away from the scales. I'm now thinking of adding another FD in-count 24 hours from yesterday evening, and just eat this evening. Do you think this will help?

So tired today. Baby was up lots last night. It's going to be hard...

vieenrose · 11/05/2013 10:58

Nofork: Don't be discouraged, the weight will come down eventually. My method is to weigh in every six weeks or so at the gym and then I'm sure to see a downwards movement. What I do though is measure myself every 10 days or thereabouts and I notice there is always half an inch off somewhere or other. It's incentive enough for me, that and the clothes I've been discarding.
Keep up the good work but if you are too tired today, don't beat yourself up and fast some other time.
Fast day for me today and things are going fine for the moment

Emilythornesbff · 11/05/2013 11:41

noforknknife don't be downhearted. You could weigh yourself every hour and each wt would be different.
It's a gradual process. When you start seeing changes you'll feel extra enthused.
And you are not alone with that cursed sleep deprivation. I find that I need to keep my fluid levels up, really make myself drink, or I am prone to ferocious snacking.

INeedThatForkOff · 11/05/2013 12:03

Blindly, I'm rumbling on my NFD! I've tracked the day on MFP to allow for a couple of glasses of wine out with friends later. I've allowed more than 1900 cals. Just shows what I must be getting through normally Shock

INeedThatForkOff · 11/05/2013 12:45

I meant blimey, not blindly. iPhone autocorrect is very determined!

ponygirlcurtis · 11/05/2013 12:49

saf I was really interested in what you said about thinking a massage could help in plateau situations. It makes sense to me - I studied massage for a while - so I'll definitely be trying that if/when I reach that point. If nothing else, I'll be more relaxed about plateauing!

DotShutt - I am the same frame as you, short with large massive boobs. No matter how much I lose, they are always big. I've always been a 'big' girl (ie even since I was a little girl), so I'm interested to see how much I can lose with this WOE.

Well, I managed my FD yesterday, despite struggling with hunger and tiredness and despite a trip to Maccy D's - in actual fact, their grilled chicken salad was v tasty, lots of it and only about 200cals. In total, I came in at about 600, which I was happy enough with as I managed two lots of over 16hrs total fasts (before having lunch yesterday and after dinner until I ate today).

Today is a NFD, and even though I plan to have wine later (it is Satuday Grin), I'm trying to make sensible choices during the day. That's a new thing in itself, previously my emotional eating was in charge and I was scarfing down crisps, chocolates damn Easter eggs and anything else without thinking. I can see a difference in my shape, I think - not that I've visibly lost weight, more I think that I seem less bloated. Hope so.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

NoForkNKnife · 11/05/2013 13:17

Grin I love how everyone is planning for wine this evening!

Gave up on the extra FD. The 4 mugs of coffee to get me through the morning made me feel sick on an empty stomach. I've just caved when my lovely DD (3) suggested (for the first time ever) my favourite fish finger sandwich for lunch. It's like she was inside my head!

Oh! And I got back on the scales and I'm actually exactly the same weight as yesterday. It's actually 2lbs down this week. Can't surely put that down to one fast day?!

ceebeegeebies · 11/05/2013 13:46

Hope you are all having a good weekend Smile

Had a couple of NSVs this morning so am feeling great Grin am only going to weigh myself once a month so have to rely on NSVs to give me a boost!

virginposter · 11/05/2013 14:00

Here's a tip for some of the newbies step away from the scales it's not healthy to weigh more than at least once a week, unless you can really handle it. For some of us it's enough to drive us to over eat whatever the scales say. If we lose then we think we have some leaway and so indulge, if we put on then we feel disheartened and say sod it I'll have that biscuit. Over use of scales is wrong and will not make the weight loss any quicker.
I'm not perfect and sometimes have been tempted to 'sneak a peek but it's really not worth it imho anyway Smile

ponygirlcurtis · 11/05/2013 14:11

When I did Scottish Slimmers a few years ago, I lost about 17.5lbs in total. But it was at a snail's pace, around 0.5lb/week. In the end I had to stop getting on and off the scales because in the course of a week I could bounce up and down so much that I'd lose sight of my loss because it was so small. But a loss is still a loss, however small, and if I'd let the lack of evidence of loss on the scales sabotage my efforts, I'd have given up and not have lost that stone +.

Whilst I know all this, I'm still dying to have a sneaky peak at the scales... Grin It's hard not to!

INeedThatForkOff · 11/05/2013 14:51

What does NSV mean?

akarucker · 11/05/2013 14:54

Right! That's it, you've convinced me. I'm going to weigh once a week. I usually weigh at night and in the morning - obsessive much?? Saturday mornings only from now on. This will be as hard as the chocolate detox...

akarucker · 11/05/2013 14:55

NSV - Non Scale Victory (eg going down to the next belt hole)

Americano · 11/05/2013 15:42

Yup, I am going to give up regular weigh ins too. After bouncing up and down all last week, and on the whole getting more and more down about the higher numbers, I think I need to step away from the scales.

I know my clothes are getting looser so can see that this WOE is working. I think once a fortnight should do it...and will hopefully avoid some of the bounces I have been seeing in the last week.

BsshBossh · 11/05/2013 15:59

Great advice virginposter. Last year when I lost 3 stones I was only weighing once a month and don't ever remember being demoralised by the numbers of the scales because I had no clue whether I was gaining, bouncing up and down etc in between weigh ins. Even during my 4 month stall, only weighing once a month helped me keep a level head about everything. I'm now a weekly weigher but only because I don't feel a slave to the numbers.

BerryMojito · 11/05/2013 16:04

Hi all, have been lurking for a while and have just completed my third week/sixth FD. I am delighted that I am 6lbs down! I have just joined MFP to track and am toying with the idea of 4:3 as have a LOT of weight to shed.

Will I see a marked difference in losses if I go to 4:3?

FrozenFlowers · 11/05/2013 16:51

I havent read through everything yet but I am just checking in to say hello. I am planning to start the 5:2 diet on Tuesday (I'm going to try fast days on Tuesdays and Thursdays and see how that goes).

I am really overweight and I've finally realised I need to do something about it. I went today to buy some new trousers for work and ended up having to buy a size 22. My weight has just crept up inexorably over the last 10 years and it can't go on. I don't even have any children yet, so I can't blame the baby weight. I want to try and sort things out so that I can start TTC in a couple of years, and I've got a very long way to go.

I think that 5:2 could work well for me. I'm nervous about it, as I've never really tried dieting (hence why I am so fat!) but I am excited about the idea of finally tackling my weight - I've suddenly realised how unhappy I am about it.

Now off to read the threads for tips!

MelanieCheeks · 11/05/2013 16:52

Second the suggestion to ignore the scales and go by the feel of clothes.

Berry, on another 5:2 diet forum I frequent, users found very little difference in results from 4:3 versus 5:2. You're making great progress so far! Why not keep 4:3 as a ploy if you hit a plateau.

I'm delighted to be in my size 12 Craghoppers trousers today - their sizing is very snug I find. Plus I'm in a size 10 Hawkshead shirt which is no longer gaping over the bazombies. Now there's an NSV!

BerryMojito · 11/05/2013 17:06

Frozen sounds like we are at a similar starting point :(

Thanks Melanie I think that sounds like a plan for now as I am very comfortable doing 5:2 at the moment.

FrozenFlowers · 11/05/2013 17:11

I'm going to have to go and buy some scales - I don't even know what I actually weigh Blush - but I know it must be a lot. I've been kidding myself that I don't really mind, but actually I do. I'm only 26, and I'm fed up of buying all my clothes in a grab and run at M&S because I'm too scared to go into other shops and finding nothing fits. And I'm concerned about the impact on my health. It's just time I sorted it out!

Good luck Berry - I'm sure we will get there in the end!

silverbeetle · 11/05/2013 17:49

Well done Berry 6lbs is great Smile

Hi Frozen Smile don't forget to measure yourself before you start (waist, hips, bust etc) as well as jumping on the scales, as these are often good indicators of progress even if the scales don't move much some weeks you find the inches do. I'd definitely try 5:2 first and see how you go, you need to be able to stick with it and it needs to fit into your life, sometimes 4:3 can be a bit restrictive. The weight will probably come off just as fast - good luck and let us know how you get on.

MelanieC loved the bazombies comment haven't heard them called that in ages, mine seem to be deflating which is a rather unfortunate side effect of the WOL, thank god for padding and underwires.Grin

Nearly Wine time for me and a slouch in front of the TV - yipeee!

Bramblesinafield · 11/05/2013 17:56

Dnt worry those of you who are not losing, we all go up and down, you will get there.

Did a twelve mile walk with friends today. My word, once again, I have really noticed the weight that I've lost. I felt healthier and more aware of my body and the straps of my rucksack settling better on my shoulders. What I'm trying to work out was the sensation of not having a load of 'body' for my arms to brush into as I was walking - the love handles are still there, but so much less. And a stone less of me to shift on the uphill push. Feels good, hadn't anticipated how good - keep going ladies!

silverbeetle · 11/05/2013 18:08

I echo Brambles my weight was stuck for 3-4 weeks (maybe 0.5lb movement), then for some unknown reason it gets going again.

A sort of NSV ish today which I thought I'd share - DD went on DoE expedition this morning, so we had to weigh her rucksack. It weighed 10kg (just over 1 1/2 stone) and it was bloody heavy! Suddenly realised that I had lost more than that in weight already, can't quite believe how much harder my body must have been having to work to carry that extra weight around.
If anyone gets disheartened by how much weight they've lost I suggest you load up a rucksack so that it is equivalent in weight to the weight you have already lost and try walking around with it - then you'll remember just how well you have done.

Whoops, after 6 now, I can hear the wine calling me from the fridge - have a good weekend everyone Smile
