The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

yeah but i don't even believe it anymore ellen. it's all very bizarre! last week i went from 11.2 right down to 10.11.4 then back up to 11.1.8 overnight. i haven't fasted since and now i'm back at 10something Confused

anyho will see what this week brings.

how are there 11 eggs and don't they belong to the children?

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 15/04/2013 07:46

Marking place to catch up! Had the best part of 2 weeks off because of my move so am in need of a catch up!

BetsyVanBell · 15/04/2013 08:10

How did the move go Seratonin?

BetsyVanBell · 15/04/2013 08:15

Day 2 sugar-free. If the sun keeps shining it's going to make it all a heck of a lot easier! Bounced down to my lowest weight again after yesterday's fast day and if I'm not eating the refined white stuff then I am less likely to bounce up again.

akarucker · 15/04/2013 08:16

Nice one Betsy!

akarucker · 15/04/2013 08:19

Thanks peplum did you just cut out the obvious refined stuff like choc, biccies etc, or did you cut out all sugar from everything? For exam

akarucker · 15/04/2013 08:20

....for example, I had bran flakes with strawberries chopped up in it this morning. That's a bit of a sugary breakfast, but not compared to frosties followed by a biscuit!!

applegate · 15/04/2013 08:29

hi all,
I have been lurking for a little while and thought I ought to say hello!
I have only done 4 fasts so far but have found as long as I pick a good day for it, normally a week day, it fits in brilliantly and as long as I am organised about not having to spend hours in the kitchen preparing kids food then it is not too tempting!
A quick question though- on my eating days do I need to eat my full amount of calories to stop my body going into starvation mode or if I ate a reduced amount would I just lose more? I have read through the threads and website and am a little confused.
Thanks for a great thread :)

BetsyVanBell · 15/04/2013 08:38

aka Bran flakes are pretty sugary but yes that's definitely a positive start compared to frosties and a biccie! I'm not sure what to have for breakfast, I've got some nice looking strawberries & blueberries so maybe them with a dollop of (plain) yogurt.

I think I'm going to use GI values as a guide, I don't want to be no-carbing for the sake of it when I could be eating the nice stoneground wholewheat bread!

BetsyVanBell · 15/04/2013 08:43

applegate It's up to you - a lot of us look at our calorie intake over a week rather than daily so we might eat less some days (eg weekdays) but then have more over the weekend. You won't go into 'starvation mode' by eating 10% less than your tdee for a couple of days!

Have a look at the Tips and Links thread for loads of great info.

Dotty342kids · 15/04/2013 08:58

Morning all and it's Fasting Monday Smile
I'm still hovering at 11st 1 which has been the case for about four weeks now! So bored of seeing it on the scales. Chances of me seeing the elusive 10's before my 40th on Friday is looking less and less Sad
Anyway, carrot and coriander soup has just been made so there's that and some (small amount of !) crusty bread for our dinner tonight.

SaltyandSweet · 15/04/2013 09:10

Fasting today. Supposed to be weigh in day too but reluctant to climb on the scales as I'm sure the low of 11.9 (76kgs - haven't seen this since pre DS1 who has just turned 4!) I saw on Saturday has bounced back up ... while aware of the bounces we all experience on this WOL, it still not fun to see it Sad Maybe I'll give myself a break and weigh in tomorrow after today's fast Smile Happy fasting everyone!

applegate · 15/04/2013 09:11

Thanks Betsy, I work a lot of nights so it is a bit tricky working out how to fit it in but definitely looking at it over a weekly period will be easier.

sweetkitty · 15/04/2013 09:19

Fasting day here today but given that it's 9.17am and I'm starving don't know how it will go, trying to be strong.

Weigh in day as well Grin

Good luck to all my fellow casters and the no sugars, I'm a sugar junkie been trying to cut down but I couldn't give it up completely.

BetsyVanBell · 15/04/2013 09:39

applegate There's a few shift workers on here having positive experience with 5:2 if I remember correctly I think there was talk of it helping with the night shift hangover effect. Can't recall any names now, sorry.

DOtty I reckon you'll be due for that 10stone something by Friday then! (Keeping fingers crossed for you Smile )

BetsyVanBell · 15/04/2013 09:48

Sweetkitty You can do it! It's just a hunger pang - get the kettle on and get busy!

ELR · 15/04/2013 09:48

Morning all, saf that's a great start to the week you are sure to stay in the tens now with 2 fasts ahead of you this week.
I am holding steady at 10.5.5 same weight now for over two weeks so hoping for a loss this week, official weigh in day is Friday after my second fast of the week.
What's on the menu for fasters today? I'm having chicken and maybe a little avocado with salad for lunch and then tonight I'm doing feta and courgette omelette with a basil and tomato salad. Spring has finally arrived so its salad all the way!!!

Itsaboatjack · 15/04/2013 10:29

Morning all.

Fasting here today too. I woke up quite hungry, maybe because of my run yesterday, and also starting to come down with a cold so I was thinking I may not fast. Took dd to school, came home had a black coffee and started work and I'm now not hungry so I'll see how it goes. I'll try to listen to my body and eat if I think I need it otherwise I'll try and stick to fasting. Either way I'm definitely stearing clear of any sugar.

My legs are very sore, so I know I will be retaing lots of water for muscle repair so I'm not going anywhere near the scales for a couple of days.

mehefin · 15/04/2013 11:41

Hi applegate

I work 2 or 3 nights a week and been doing 5:2 since end of Jan. Definitely easier to stay up all night and I no longer raid the biscuits or eat loads of white toast!

I am working tonight and doing my first fast of the week. I ate yesterday at 7pm and will have nothing but water til 4pm today then a weetabix before I sleep for a few hours ( no small children here!). I have the rest of my 500 cals at 9pm before I go to work.

I will eat about 1am -green soup tonight but that is my lunch for Tuesday when I will be sleeping.

I know others adapt it a bit differently to fit round their nights but it's not a problem if you think in 24hr blocks.

Hope it works well for you

bugsyburge · 15/04/2013 11:49

Morning all, fast (&no sugar) day here....also TOTM so a rather depressing day all round!!

just wanted to check in and say hey!

BetsyVanBell · 15/04/2013 11:52

Woah Bugsy - good luck!

sweetkitty · 15/04/2013 12:13

Thanks for the messages, love this thread, I'm 2lbs off goal weight then I can maintain and tone up.

I don't know whether to have 100 cals something at 1 which would mean a 19 hour fast or try and wait and have my 500 cals at dinner. I have found I can do an 18 hour fast no problem but those last few hours to 24 are hell, I think my longest is 22 hours Blush

greenfig · 15/04/2013 12:38

Sugar free fortnight sounds good to me, great idea. Already had a fruit muffin this morning though. Was a healthy no sugar 1 but did have fruit, oats & wholewheat flour. I think I'll cut out the obv sugars & opt for low GI choices. Will have to see what happens with the w/e alcohol though! (lightweight!) I seem to be maintaining/plateauing a few lbs above lowest pre Easter weight & think perhaps I have been a bit relaxed on eat days so this should help.
I may have an unplanned fast today as I'm not very hungry. Also need to write down so that I comit (bore alert!) will do min 2 x JM dvds per week, 1 x pilates class, walk every day, 4 x 15 mins exercise/yoga p/wk 1 x swim p/ fortnight. There. Now I'll have to do it!

Shewhojuggles · 15/04/2013 12:42

Hi there fellow Monday fasters. I'm back on the wagon after a bit of a naughty week. I fasted last Monday, but then only a mini fast on Saturday because we were away Wed - Fri and had a family party at the weekend. I did run twice and swim twice during that time so hoping i havent done TOO much damage. I find it so much easier to fast when i'm in my ususal routine but school holidays has totally messed that up!

Dotty342kids hope you get there to the 10s for your birthday on Fri, fingers crossed! I'm trying to get to the elusive 11s for my 30th birthday next month but currently 12.9 so highly unlikely Sad

Dotty342kids · 15/04/2013 12:55

Thanks shewhojuggles, I live in hope!! Good luck with your target too...
