The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

i am def starting tomorrow and just bought two cans of beer for this evening whilst i was out getting pack lunch stuff as my farewell to alcohol and sugar ceremony Grin

frenchfancy · 14/04/2013 15:30

ELR my DH is much sexier since he lost 2 stone. I feel sexier too because I like what I see when I look in the mirror. Does that answer your question?

postmanpatscat · 14/04/2013 16:22

I started 5:2 on February 21st and I made a list of targets eg reduced sugar intake, more exercise, improved skin and digestion. I'm pleased to report that I met another one this morning with a 10k run in just under 70 mins non-stop. Only one target left now and that's to get my waist down to 28 inches...I'm just a quarter inch away!

I will sing the praises of this woe to anyone who will listen!

BetsyVanBell · 14/04/2013 17:35

Fabulous patscat! Sounds like you'll have to set some new targets!

My impromptu fast day and first sugar-free day has gone brilliantly - the sunshine makes it so much easier Grin. I've had a busy day so managed a good 23 hours before breaking my fast and did not have milk in my hot drinks. I was offered and declined chocolates.

All good.

However, I have eaten most of my calories and it's still early... this is the bit where I'm starting to think about wine (none in the house) and I expect it won't be long before the sugar cravings hit too. But I will get through it and maybe treat myself to a leisurely oily bath later.

Hope the other sugar-free fasters are staying strong...

swallowedAfly · 14/04/2013 17:37

well done bvb. i'm not starting till tomorrow so am currently having my farewell to sugar beer. i also have some maltesers for later when ds is in bed.

tomorrow is the day for me.

Dotty342kids · 14/04/2013 17:40

wow you lot, I go out for the day and when I get back you're all on some sugar free thing! Yikes Grin.
I know I couldn't do that at this stage but am full of admiration for those of you who are going to give it a go. Whether you manage two weeks, one week or just a few days you'll have given your bodies a good break, hopefully found some nice substitues and will be feeling and looking better for it.
ELR no increase in sex drive as such (my DH is perpetually after his oats anyway!) but like frenchfancy says, looking better and feeling good about looking better is definitely helping things along in the bedroom Grin

BetsyVanBell · 14/04/2013 17:42

Just realised I shouldn't be drinking Barley Cup if I'm going to do this no sugar thing properly. Never done this so strictly before Shock

YoniFoolsAndHorses · 14/04/2013 18:45

I don't think I can manage without sugar, but as a nod to the not drinking diet soda thing, I have decided not to drink it today...!

Fast day today and I have survived on water and black coffee. So it'll be 23/24 hours fast when I get supper later.

Torture right now though as I am feeding the children at the gym and they are tucking into burgers.

This had really better work! I did a lot of reading earlier of the 'links' thread for 5:2. I take on board the idea that I should give it a month before declaring one way or another.

Talkinpeace · 14/04/2013 19:30

Back to fasting tomorrow after a two week break.
Really looking forward to it.

akarucker · 14/04/2013 19:57

So first day of no sugar was fine, but as it's a fast day anyway, I would usually accept that I wouldn't get any. It's about now that I start looking forward to my morning biscuits tomorrow.

Cuddledup · 14/04/2013 20:08

Thanks to everyone's encouragement this morning I downloaded Dr M's book (I love Kindle), I've read a lot of it today, I've seen the tv prog and now I'm ready to start.
But now I'm facing tomorrow Day 1 fasting with trepidation. I know I've got a busy day at work so hopefully I'll be too busy to think about big quantities of food. How do you stop the sugar cravings.....

Talkinpeace · 14/04/2013 20:09

you decide to.

BetsyVanBell · 14/04/2013 20:10

Well done aka - see i'd been cheating recently and having 'just a tiny piece of dark chocolate' even on fast days - so no breaks from the sugar at all. Tomorrow will be tough and we will feel deprived, which is not the ethos of this WOE but it is short term and we can do it.

My name is Betsy (sort of!) and I am addicted to sugar.

sigh

BetsyVanBell · 14/04/2013 20:18

Cuddledup They'll be loads of fasters on here tomorrow so log on when you need a bit of support, Monday's a popular day!

I stop sugar cravings by going cold turkey for about 2 weeks once a year or so. There's a few of us doing a little experiment on here - it will be interesting to see how everyone gets on with it! I only have my personal experience to go on.

I really wanted some Barley Cup - it's grain based so mostly carbohydrate. I couldn't get inspired by any of my herbal teas so found an ancient bag of ground decaff coffee in the back of the cupboard. It's not very nice but it is distracting me!

ellenbrody · 14/04/2013 20:39

Reading this had made me realise I'm addicted to sugar aswell!! Grrr. There is no way I can go cold turkey with 10 Easter eggs still in the house! Damn!

BetsyVanBell · 14/04/2013 20:42

ellen Spend the next 2 weeks eating the eggs, see how it pans out for us lot, then go cold turkey! Grin

akarucker · 14/04/2013 20:46

Little did you all know that this forum was turning into 'sugar-addiction anonymous'...

Itsaboatjack · 14/04/2013 21:09

Evening all.

I think I'll join you all in a sugar free two weeks. I am addicted to sugar too I think, though I never eat sweets as such and rarely eat chocolate, my weaknesses are cakes and breads and white carbs so I think it will do me good. It's funny I think this woe of eating has increased my eating of these foods in a way. I'm a serial yo-yo dieter so to start with I was still in the diet mentality and so avoiding them mainly, then I began to be ,more relaxed about them, trying to get to grips with what a 'normal' way of eating was but I've definitely gone too far the other way.

So today I did my half marathon. It went well, 2hrs 1min :)
I actually ran it in a semi fasted state too. I was planning on having breakfast, but couldn't face it when I first got up at 6am, then I got distracted looking for my headphones and forgot, I only remembered when I was on the tube on the way there. So when the race started I was about 12hrs since I last ate. Felt fine with it though, and have certainly made up for it since with a huge roast dinner and more cheesecake than I would like to admit too Blush. So definitely looking forward to fasting tomorrow.

BetsyVanBell · 14/04/2013 21:46

Cor, well done itsa! Impressive stuff. Especially for a sugarholic Wink

Southeastdweller · 14/04/2013 21:47

Sugar addict here too. The thought of giving it up even for a day seems terrifying! Interested to know how you all get on. I remember Marion Keyes saying on Loose Women that she lost a lot of weight by giving up sugar.

Good luck to everyone for next week.

Itsaboatjack · 14/04/2013 22:11

Why thank you bvb.

I've just finished off the open bottle of wine in the fridge so that temptation is now gone Grin

peplum41 · 15/04/2013 01:46

Hi akarucker had only enough time for a brief glance at the thread yesterday and thought ah poor aka, must get back to her later. But in the mean time all this support has been drummed up and so a sugar free fortnight it is! Just thought I'd add that when I started 5:2, I felt I needed to not eat choc for the first two weeks just to balance out the bucket loads I ate before I got it together try fasting. You know how you get a thing for a certain bar for a few weeks, then move on to another type? Well at the time I was addicted to chunky mint kitkats! Could eat 6 a day. I really never thought I would say this, but that two weeks without has cured me of my choc addiction as I can now eat a little and leave the rest, seem to find twixes vile, used to adore those. So try to think its just for two weeks, not forever, but your attitude will alter in that fortnight.

convert welcome to the threads, hope you enjoy 5:2. I think you will find it easier to stick to than low carving.

peplum41 · 15/04/2013 02:16

Plus well done itsaboatjack, can't believe you managed it while fasting. Must have been burning some serious fattage.

ellenb thanks for the bath tip, really worked. However the unusual sight of his wife in the bath got dh all "keen" and I just wanted to go to sleep but he can be persistent. Would have to say elr , I'm less than enthusiastic about sex since starting this woe.

swallowedAfly · 15/04/2013 06:44

well done itsaboat - impressive stuff.

well this morning i'm 10.13.6 again for no reason. gawd knows.

back to work, back to school and a fast day today oh and day one no sugar.

ellenbrody · 15/04/2013 07:05

itsa I'm very impressed!!!!
swallowed woo hoo, the elusive 10!!

Fast day today, itsa I definitely eat more sweet stuff since being on this WOL too. I can't help think how bad sugary stuff and fasting must be to insulin levels?? That should give me an incentive to cut down a bit I suppose (eyes 11 Easter eggs), well not yet anyway Smile
