5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hello all,
Just a quick question from a new girl please! Can I fast for 24 hours rather than one day - so eat my dinner tonight at 6 and then follow the

Talkinpeace · 17/03/2013 16:35

Point to Ponderd

I have so many pounds to go
Be very careful thinking that way.
Because 5:2 is for life, not just for weight loss.
I have no pounds to go - have not done since before Christmas
but I still fast
because the health benefits carry on long after the excess weight is gone.

Talkinpeace · 17/03/2013 16:37

inneedofaname
I had a (massive) lunch today. I'll not eat now till supper tomorrow - cups of tea yes but food no - and supper will be 500 calories and then no more food till lunch on Tuesday.
The timings are what suits you and your lifestyle
but remember to make sure the calorie deficit is in there
(ie skipping breakfast and lunch but having a blow out dinner is skipping meals, not fasting)

Appelmoes · 17/03/2013 16:58

Hi, I'm trying the fast diet since last week. So no massive weight loss yet, and to be honest I haven't properly weighed myself as I will see and notice the difference. Hopefully soon enough! I've had a messy week, with 2 fast days but my feast days were a bit too much of a feast. I put it down to moving office and getting used to the new area (overexcited about the new take away lunch options). Hope this week I'll be better.

I prefer to fast from the lunch on to the next day supper. I know I will have a bit less weight loss because I don't fast 'two sleeps', but this is way more doable for me. I think I'm more likely to stick to it this way than any other way, so that I won't fall off the wagon.

Anyway, thanks everyone for all the postings. I find it very motivating to read other people's weight losses on this, can't hear too much of that :)

(ps. Surely I'm not the only one who's not a mum but still posting here, right?)
(ps 2. what is DH, OH, etc?)

InNeedOfAName · 17/03/2013 17:13

Thanks talk - but just to be clear - I have now eaten my lovely Sunday roast and will eat less than 500 cals between now and 6.30 tomorrow night when I will have a very regular dinner - have I fasted or not?!

akarucker · 17/03/2013 17:21

inneedofaname no, I don't think that's considered a fast, because if you're going to have 500 calories during the day tomorrow + a regular dinner, then there's no fast, as you'll be way over. You would need to just stick to the 500 cals tomorrow (maybe in your dinner if that's going to be your meal).

Talkinpeace · 17/03/2013 17:22

not really
because your roast will have been well over TDEE
and by having a regaular dinner tomorrow night you will not have had a 24 hour period with only 500 calories in
today is over 2000
tomorrow will be over 2000
there is no gap...
the 500 calories is instead of the evening meal, not as well as

InNeedOfAName · 17/03/2013 17:24

So the period from 6 to 6 doesn't count as 24 hours - think I misunderstood the rules somewhere Confused

Talkinpeace · 17/03/2013 17:34

Inneedofaname
stop thinking in days and start thinking in weeks
over a week you need two sessions where you only take in 500 calories
four where you take in your TDEE
and one where you can relax
resulting in a weekly calories deficit of around 3000 calories

a big meal today and a big meal tomorrow supper will not leave you with any calorie deficit

BetsyVanBell · 17/03/2013 17:55

InNeedOf The fasting period (ie the period with only 500 calories) should cover the gap between an evening meal on eg Sunday night to your first meal on Tuesday morning - we're looking at more like 36+ hours rather than 24.

You can fast until Monday evening with nothing but drinks (ie tea, coffee, water) and then break your fast with a 500 calorie meal or you can spread the calories over the day. It's up to you, we all have different preferences.

BetsyVanBell · 17/03/2013 18:01

Hello Appelmoes- there's an 'acronyms' tab link under the heading Mumsnet Talk at the top of the page which should answer all those questions!

swallowedAfly · 17/03/2013 18:02

500 cals from going to sleep one day to going to sleep the next. hth.

feel a bit piggy. had a roast at my folks - no meat (not a pork fan) but had yorkshire and roast potatoes.

have come home and eaten a big bag of crisps and then a dairy cheese strip of all things. been a while since i've done that and i did put back the special offer bandj's that i initially picked up in the shop.

thank goodness for a fasting day tomorrow. been a little too familiar with the gin this weekend too.

Appelmoes · 17/03/2013 18:06

Yes, thanks I found it after posting. Lol, always thought DH was for Domestic Husband and OH for Out-of-home Husband or something. Poor guy ;). Probably doesn't even make sense in English.

Anyway, I also did a lot of internet searches on how long to fast etc. There is some info now on the official site thefastdiet.co.uk/different-ways-of-managing-your-fast-day/

I'm first trying to do the lunch till dinner next day approach, but if it doesn't work, I may have to move to the 36 hour. We'll see.

BetsyVanBell · 17/03/2013 18:10

Appelmoes It's much easier than it seems, I promise! We fear that first fast but after a few you'll look forward to them, especially the Monday one - I think the weekend indulgers on here will agree Wink

InNeedOfAName · 17/03/2013 18:11

Ah - I knew I wasn't going mad. Michael Mosley's advice on how to manage the fasting period. Is anyone having any success with this?

storminabuttercup · 17/03/2013 18:29

Hi all!

Weigh in day for me, last week was my first weigh and I'd lost 7lb, I'm up on that by 2lb but I am I bit bloated and erm, bunged up Confused

Today is an eat day and I had Sunday lunch out, yorkshires, roasties, parsnips the lot, im guessing the calorie intake was huge, so thinking I'm going to do an extra fast tomorrow. I plan on doing 20 hour fast broken tomorrow with spag Bol which can't be that high? Maybe 600?

How's everyone else doing?

akarucker · 17/03/2013 18:35

LOVE these eat days, and LOVE those fast days that follow! It's the perfect storm.

LillethTheCat · 17/03/2013 18:50

So it begins. Ive just had my dinner. So now I have 500 calories between now and Tues morning, but nothing till 11AM (or later if I eat/drink again tonight)

My first fast and first day tomorrow. Still trying to decide if I should do it slowly though and just limit to 800-1000 calories (I usually eat 1500 or maybe up to 2000 on a pig-out day)

Talkinpeace · 17/03/2013 19:12

inneedofaname
several of us who post on these threads are among those quoted on that site and bits of it certainly bear a striking resemblance to the early 5:2 threads Wink

lilleth
take it an hour at a time and see what feels good

dines · 17/03/2013 19:20

BsshBossh · 17/03/2013 19:26

dines I'm fasting tomorrow and so looking forward to it :) Won't be eating until 8.30 tonight so have a long fasting period tomorrow. Mondays are my most successful fast days because of all the cals I consume over the weekend Blush

dines · 17/03/2013 19:30

Also forgot to mention that iv been abit constipated is there anything I can eat to help ne out abit lol...sorry to go into detail.. and I had realy bad cramps last night also, painful.. has anyone experienced thats?

postmanpatscat · 17/03/2013 19:39

dines I wish I had that problem, it's having the opposite effect on me!

Decided to fast today instead of tomorrow, I hadn't eaten by 1.30 so it seemed a shame to waste the opportunity. Had a lie in this morning then went to the gym, I swear I can feel my bum toning up even while I'm on the cross trainer. DP joined me, he has lost 2st during his six weeks away and is running for an hour easily. He is now doing 5:2 with me (us!!).

Hope everyone had a good weekend, good luck to those fasting tomorrow.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 17/03/2013 19:49

Hi Folks

am suffering, my digestive system is not coping with fasting..
please help.

I am coping with the reality of fasting on fasting days,
however, on my first normal day after a fast I get horrid cramps then poo for england (not the runs) it normally takes about 6-10 poo's before the cramps stop.
it is then fine for the day after but I am fasting monday and thursdays which is making tuesdays and friday's a nightmare.

I have been doing well with weight loss but am not sure it is worth it.

Any tips or ideas?

BetsyVanBell · 17/03/2013 19:52

Dines I know that if I've been chomping away at my dried fruits & nut supplies I don't have a problem in that area! White bread, pizza etc all bung me right up Blush
