Nurse not able to remove coil

This happened to anyone else? What happened If they couldn't remove it?

dementedpixie · 12/08/2019 18:58

I was referred to the gynaecology dept at the hospital who also couldn't remove it. Was removed under general anaesthetic in the end

candlefloozy · 12/08/2019 19:15

@dementedpixie thanks for the reply. I've been referred to a gynae but when the nurse was pulling on the threads it didn't seem to want to come out and was very uncomfortable! Was it really painful afterwards? Had it got embedded?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 12/08/2019 19:18

They couldn't find my threads at all but knew it was there as xray and ultrasound showed it was still in place. Don't think it was embedded, just out of reach. Hopefully you get sorted out ok

ThirdAidKit · 12/08/2019 19:27

Noooo just been told mine is embedded. Envy

candlefloozy · 12/08/2019 19:41

@ThirdAidKit so what's the next step?

@dementedpixie they found my strings but she couldn't get to them. When she did, it was uncomfortable. So they've referred me.

It was a hysteroscopy I had under GA. I imagine they may do similar for an embedded coil

dementedpixie · 12/08/2019 19:50

From online:

If the IUD doesn’t come out with a slight pull, your doctor will remove the device using another method. You may need ahysteroscopyto remove the IUD if it has attached to your uterine wall. During this procedure, your doctor widens your cervix to insert a hysteroscope. The hysteroscope allows small instruments to enter your uterus. You may require anesthesia for this procedure. It can take between five minutes to an hour to complete a hysteroscopy

candlefloozy · 12/08/2019 20:04

@dementedpixie blimey! Surely that would mean going to hospital? I've been referred to a surgery. Not hospital

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 12/08/2019 20:12

When gynaecology dept couldn't remove mine I got referred to hospital for surgery. Be prepared for a further referral if gynae cant remove it either

ThirdAidKit · 12/08/2019 20:14

Only just worked it out after an ultrasound to see why I had pelvic pain.

I think their first port of call is to try to pull it out... now not keen on this option!

Sad
candlefloozy · 12/08/2019 20:17

@dementedpixie thanks for the info. They don't tell you anything do they!!

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 12/08/2019 20:17

So my experience was:
Nurse couldn't remove so referred to gynae
Gynae couldn't remove it so referred to hospital for hysteroscopy
Eventually removed in hospital under GA

candlefloozy · 12/08/2019 20:17

@ThirdAidKit I've been having pelvic pain and awful lower back pain lately. Didn't even think about it being related? Was yours?

OP posts:
ThirdAidKit · 12/08/2019 20:27

I think so! They’ve eliminated everything else, and then saw that it was attached to the womb wall on ultrasound. Ultrasound tech person said it was the second she’d seen in a couple of weeks - so relatively common.

I do not want a GA Envy

ThirdAidKit · 12/08/2019 20:28

Demented did you have another put in?

My first one was great and no trouble, but this is putting me off...

dementedpixie · 12/08/2019 20:31

No, mine had expired but dh had a vasectomy so didnt need it for contraception any more

candlefloozy · 12/08/2019 20:39

Urgh. When they put mine in I had no problems at all but I hope this next referral is more successful. If it embeds does that cause complications for conceiving?

OP posts:
ThirdAidKit · 12/08/2019 20:42

Bloody hope not. The ultrasound person did say it shouldn’t cause any problems generally.

I have wondered if it is still providing effective contraception, but no one has mentioned this...

Iwantacookie · 12/08/2019 20:49

They had trouble getting my last one out.
Doctor told me in the end she had basically done a d&c on me to get it out. I'm not going to lie I needed a couple of days to recover. Good luck.

loubielou31 · 12/08/2019 20:52

The strings of mine couldn't be found, I was sent for an ultrasound to check it's location. It was where it should be so the gynaecologist offered me a choice. She could give me a local anaesthetic and try again to remove it or have it removed under a general. I chose the local and it was actually removed quite easily. Hth

candlefloozy · 12/08/2019 21:22

@ThirdAidKit the nurse kept telling me to use condoms until it's out because my gynae referral should come quite quickly. But I'm having it out to ttc. So can't see why I'd need to?

OP posts:
candlefloozy · 12/08/2019 21:24

@Iwantacookie that's awful. I think GA would be horrible.

@loubielou31 I'd be happy with a local.

OP posts:
gracefull · 12/08/2019 21:29

I’m pretty sure she’s told you to use condoms that because if you get pregnant with a coil still in situ it can cause ectopic pregnancy (because the embryo physically can’t embed in the womb due to logistics, it’ll go to the next best place). Or there could be damage caused to an embryo when they manage to remove the coil and ultimately it can cause an unwanted abortion.

Chosennone · 12/08/2019 21:33

The nurse tried, the GP tried i was refrred to local gynae clinic, she tried. I then went to hospital and had the hysterscopy under local anasthetic which was uncomfortable and odd but not particularly painful. Never again

dementedpixie · 12/08/2019 21:34

I took the mini pill alongside mine until it got removed. I was ok with my GA. Was done as a day case so out within a few hours
