Is there any form of contraception that stops periods?

As the title really.

Is there any form of contraception, short or long term, that effectively stops periods?

Currently pregnant with #3 and have absolutely no intention of having any more so open to permanent methods also.

Have always struggled with my periods, they are heavy, painful and I get horrendous PMT.

I've heard the copper coil can stop them? Is this accurate? Anyone have any experience?

I think it's different for everyone. Everyone I know who has the implant hasn't had a period for the full 3 years. I've had 6 full months of bleeding on it! I've heard the coil can for some people, but it really is different for everyone. The only thing that definitely can is back to back pill packets but don't think that's recommended long term. Sorry, not much help! You could discuss methods with your GP but might be a case of trial and error to find something that actually works and stops them for you long term

My periods stopped when i had a birth control implant - i loved having it.

I think someone said about 40% women had this and about the same had far heavier periods so can't predict it.

popcorndiva · 31/08/2018 20:14

I didn't get any periods with cerelle/cerazette.

Thisnamechanger · 31/08/2018 20:15

I'm on the prog only pill and haven't had a period for 6 years but I don't think everyone has the same reaction

ElspethFlashman · 31/08/2018 20:15

The Mirena. It's not copper, it's progesterone. I haven't had a period in a year. It's fucking amazing. The Family Planning Clinics do them for you. No GP visit required.

SmartyPants0 · 31/08/2018 20:18

I second the mirena coil.
I had spotting and used panty liners this didn't bother me, then the spotting stopped.
But its not for everyone

Danglingmod · 31/08/2018 20:19

I don't get a period with either the depo injection or the mini pill. I've not had a period in about 9 or 10 years!

dementedpixie · 31/08/2018 20:19

Copper coil can make them heavier and more painful. Mirena stopped mine for several years as did cerazette mini pill.

Verbena87 · 31/08/2018 20:22

I’m another person who doesn’t bleed on cerazette. The first time I went on it I did have annoying spotting on and off for 3 months, but after that nothing. Have been on it twice for several year blocks before baby, and am now on it again. Had 4 days bleeding when I started it this time but otherwise nothing. Still breastfeeding but he’s 1 so I reckon without the pill my periods would’ve returned by now.

DownAtFraggleRock · 31/08/2018 20:22

Yes Mirena stopped mine. Copper coil can make them worse.

Kindlethefourth · 31/08/2018 20:23

Mini pill. Not had a proper period since 2012. It's fab.

savagebaggagemaster · 31/08/2018 20:23

Not had one for 7 years on the mirena. Smile

AutoFilled · 31/08/2018 20:26

I’m on the mirena coil. It releases hormone and that stops the period. I had 6 months of bad acne, then the body adjusted and I’m fine now. It’s really great not to have periods.

strawberrypenguin · 31/08/2018 20:26

Implant works for me. I have the occasional minimal spotting but it's overall pretty good

workshyfop · 31/08/2018 20:29

Cerezette/Cerelle has stopped mine completely. I hated having to come off it when ttc. Had forgotten how hideous periods are.

Ullupullu · 31/08/2018 20:29

The combined pill. You can run packs together with no issue.

LostPlatypus · 31/08/2018 20:39

I'm another of the many who has no periods on the mini pill (cerazette/desogestrel 75mg if you get the generic one). That's actually why I take it because I have endometriosis and my periods are horrific without it and I'm in a ton of pain, so cerazette stops a lot of that for me.

I'd suggest speaking to your GP about it, because any decent GP should be able to suggest the best thing for you.

NoSuchThing · 31/08/2018 20:45

Mirena worked for me.

Ciderandskatesdontmix · 31/08/2018 20:56

The depo injection, mirena coil and mini pill have all stopped mine. Coming off the depo was the worst for me, and I believe you can only be on it for a certain amount of time as it can affect your bone density.

MadeForThis · 31/08/2018 21:11

I needed contraception that stopped bleeding after dd2 as I had extremely bad bleeding that had me in hospital on 3 occasions.

First tried cirazette. Worked for month or so then heavy bleeding began again. Changed to mirena coil and have only ever spotted since. about 5 months now. Easy to put in. Felt mild discomfort that's all. Effective immediately and if removed fertility returns straight away.

Copper coil has no hormones but makes bleeding worse.

CMOTDibbler · 31/08/2018 21:18

I'm on my fourth mirena, and the most I've ever had is very light spotting, and nothing at all since my last change

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 31/08/2018 21:19

When I was on the combined pill I only took a break every 6 months. You don't have to have a period on them - they were designed with the break to make it feel more 'natural' (by men I presume!)

Depo can be hit or miss - look at old threads. It made me bleed constantly and gave me dizzy spells and panic attacks - not fun.

WooYa · 31/08/2018 21:20

I took cerazette and didn't have one for about 5 years. It was heavenHalo

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 31/08/2018 21:22

Oh I personally wouldn't risk the mirena because of my issues with the depo injection but my friend has been using them for years and loves it. She says she hasn't had a period for the last 6 years. If you can handle the hormones it's a good choice.

Yorkshiremum17 · 31/08/2018 21:24

Cerazette for me too, I was out on it specifically to stop my period as they were dreadful! I've been on it for about 10 years now and have been told i can stay on it until after the menopause which they will test me for in a couple of years time. Best thing ever for me!
