Hoorah! DH has finally got round to booking a vasectomy.
Having had CSecs for all of my kids I really feel that it's his turn to step up.
Just wondered what people's experiences have been really...

Anyone..,?

ShowOfHands · 31/08/2017 14:15

DH was one of the 10% who suffered permanent complications. 90% won't though.

It was DH's choice entirely and I didn't see it as anything other than a free choice to be made by him. No turn taking. He doesn't regret it but it has caused him pain and the complication of further procedures.

Mrscropley · 31/08/2017 14:19

My exh had it done the morning and we had sex on the same night. Blush
No side effects at all. .

MoonPower · 31/08/2017 21:37

Oh no Showoff your poor DH - is he ok now? Do you mind me asking what the complications were?

MoonPower · 31/08/2017 21:38

Wow MrsCropley that's amazing!

Bloody brilliant. I always on vasectomy threads post vasectomy sex is brilliant. No false hormones, fiddling with condoms, sex whenever and where ever you want. Excellent!

JoyceDivision · 31/08/2017 21:40

Dh took a year to get the all clear, but avoided a second snip Grin

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 31/08/2017 21:40

Do had his 2 years ago this month. He was marathon training st the time and had less than a week off running. He was quite sore the day itself but much better the next day. Could probably have gone for a run sooner physically but he was told to wait x number of days because it was an open wound they don't stitch it.

Manclife · 31/08/2017 21:42

Painful beyond belief! Still swollen and in pain a month after the op. If I could go back in time I'd have preferred to just never had sex again!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 31/08/2017 21:44

Oh yeah Joyce has reminded me did take about a year to get the all clear though. He ended up having to go to the hospital to do a sample there so they could test it fresh. He had non motile sperm (dead sperm) but at a low enough figure they considered him sterile. He better be I'm getting too old to have another baby now.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 31/08/2017 21:45

Dh says it's the worst thing he ever did.
My advice- don't have it done by gp- they are not specialists in this.

SleepingBooty · 31/08/2017 21:46

DH had to wear special support pants for a day or too once the pain wore off. It took a good couple of months to get the all clear but it was worth it.

iMatter · 31/08/2017 21:52

Dh had it.

Quick recovery, all fine.

It's worked so well for us.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 31/08/2017 21:53

DH had it done by a specialist in hospital under local but still had fairly nasty post-operative complications and was in bed on drugs in severe pain for a week - it looked a bit iffy for a while but thank god had no permanent side effects all fine now. The surgeon he went back to was hugely personally offended by the complications and made it a personal mission to fix things so I think for him at least the side effects were pretty rare. DH, bless him, didn't tell me the worst case scenarios that they told him might result from the complications until many years later because he didn't want to worry me or make me feel guilty.

dementedpixie · 31/08/2017 21:57

Dh had his a couple of months ago so he's not at the stage of getting the all clear yet. He says it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. He didn't have much swelling and minimal bruising which settled down within a week. He had to buy some tight fitting pants for afterwards as he normally wears boxers. He has no pain now

Moussemoose · 31/08/2017 22:24

For what it's worth I was in bed in pain for about 10 days after my emergency section.

The 'worst thing ever' is entirely relative if you are comparing it to a stubbed toe.

scaevola · 31/08/2017 22:37

There's no 'taking turns' in this.

Neither of younhas yet had a turn at being sterilised. you jay or may not have been taking turns at reversible contraception. It is not biologically possible to take turns at childbirth, and just plain wrong to suggest that a different procedure for a different purpose should be linked to it.

It's 1:10 for the major, enduring complications (see NHS Choices page)

There will be others who have lesser side effects (curable, under 3 months duration). And others for whom it is just fine.

What helps is wearing two pairs of tight trunk-style pants in the aftermath, and taking the advice tomrest for a good 48 hours afterwards seriously. Including not driving (ok, lots of people breach that one when the anaesthetic is still in their system, but it's a bad idea, especially as it wears off). No small DC on lap, no heavy physical activity. Get in a good stock of OTC painkillers, and consider a pack of perineal peas.

Any sign of redness, discharge or heat, go straight to a doctor - he may need ABs.

And do not abandon other contraception until a proper all clear - requires both time elapsed and number of ejaculations. This takes a few months (most men clear in the 12-16 week timeframe, some are unlucky and it can take over a year, but by that stage they may be adbpvising a repeat procedure)

histinyhandsarefrozen · 01/09/2017 09:20

I hate it when people diminish other people's experiences like that, mouse mouse. Nice.

MoonPower · 02/09/2017 08:55

Calm down people.
All I'm saying is that I have twice now had my belly slashed open and a huge blinking baby ripped out! It took months to feel anything like normal again.
DH has said himself that by comparison, having a wee tube snipped is probably not as bad.
Obviously I am worried about possible complications and wouldn't wish pain on my lovely DH. But he says he is cool about it.
I would just be interested in other people's experiences. Thanks to those who have shared.

expatmigrant · 02/09/2017 09:58

DH happily volunteered after second DC. Bit sore for a couple of days. No complications at all.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 02/09/2017 10:51

Well, we have just calmly shared our experiences. Confused
It dh is happy having a wee tube snipped then that's all good.

Velvian · 02/09/2017 10:58

Dh had it a few months ago. On a Wednesday, back to work the Monday. Couple of weeks before he felt up to running. Got the all clear from the 16wk post op sample. No problems at all. One of his friends had it a couple of months before him & same story. You'll probably get a disproportionate amount of stories where things went wrong, as with everything. Dh did take a few months from 1st mentioning to booking the op & i tried to discourage him (as I felt it was the only "fair" stance i could take iyswim). We're both happy with the results. Grin

Leo10 · 02/09/2017 11:10

Ask your GP about No Scalpel Vasectomy. It's less painful and is completed in around 30 mins.
You will have to use contraception until you are given the all clear which in most cases is 16 weeks. If there is still dead sperm in the tubes another sample will be needed in 6 weeks.

LakeFlyPie · 02/09/2017 13:17

Does anyone have any experience of the non scalpel vasectomy (there is a clinic in the NW which DH is considering)
Am interested how a 'small split' is made in the skin without a scalpel and also how the tubes are blocked / cut.

WelshMoth · 10/09/2017 18:51

Does anyone's DH's go for re-testing years after? You know, for reassurance that things haven't reversed?
