My DH is having it done in a couple of weeks when I will be away on business!!! So not so much sympathy from me...DS2 is almost 8, so he has taken his time getting it sorted. When he finally went to Dr, she had to google the procedure and said that he was quite old to get it done!!! He is 46.

I think you normally have local unless you are a complicated case (and not so sure what that means!) which is obviously for the Dr to decide.

meditrina · 25/03/2014 11:01

It is sometimes done under general.

It's generally better to be done by a urologist or via a provider like Marie Stopes who employ doctors who spend their entire time doing the procedure, rather than a GP who might only do a few a year. Then at least you'll know you have minimised the chances of failure or complications arising from surgical error.

ScienceRocks · 25/03/2014 11:01

Supportive pants are a must. A size or two smaller than usual would be good.

Tell him to take the diazepam (Valium). It isn't just about making him more relaxed, it will relax his muscles and make the procedure easier (my DH eschewed the diazepam and was told off by the doctor who said it felt like DH's body was fighting the procedure) and therefore less painful.

Tell him to take ibuprofen beforehand as well.

He'll feel battered and bruised afterwards, but a bit of rest and he should be fine.

I second the recommendation to keep an eye and nose out for things afterwards. Any undue swelling or smells indicate an infection, which can be incredibly uncomfortable.

codandchipstwice · 25/03/2014 11:03

Luckily our GP was a surgeon before he changed specialism, and has a theatre room at the practice - so he takes referrals and private from all over, we are just lucky that we know him already. Apparently he cuts, burns and clips - just to make treble sure!

He has had to wait about 8 weeks - which seeing as is free is really not too bad I don't think

Not quite sure about the shaving tonight though, or the bath to soak and soften tomorrow, sounds like an entirely different kind of penis beaker

I bow down to DoctorTwo's balls of steel, DH couldn't get out of the car without help afterwards never mind drive home!
I would advise keeping the willy jokes to a bare minimum for a day or two as well, they get a little tetchy about it...

DP was fine after his, worst bit of whole thing was when the doctor poured Ice cold water over his bits before the procedure. Grin

No need for a jock strap. Reasonably supportive/ tightish boxers were sufficient, he tried tight briefs but were too uncomfy due to swollen bollocks.

He has a very manual job so had timed vasectomy to be during Xmas hols so had a couple of weeks off, non manual jobs could be back next day.

Don't think he needed painkillers.

JuniperTisane · 25/03/2014 12:23

one side was too tight to get to properly so after a good rummage around they gave up and referred him for a scan and a urology appointment. He was left with all the bruising though.

He's on the waiting list for one under GA but in two minds whether its worth the hassle now.

PetiteRaleuse · 25/03/2014 12:30

dh had no swelling or pain that couldn't be controlled by paracetamol. He had his done under general as the urologist wanted to rummage around a bit to see if anything was wrong (unexplained pain). He was home the same day and had the next day (a Friday) off work. By the following Monday he had pretty much forgotten about it. Was a textbook simple case: they so happen!

scaevola · 25/03/2014 12:36

DH's procedure was really straightforward, followed by a lazy weekend (all he needed was paracetamol and tight pants) and back to work (office job) on Monday. (Those with more physically demanding jobs might want to book some time off to be on the safe side).

His tubing hasn't fully cleared though. I didn't know much about PVPS and other complications before he went in the first time, but having now read TheFuzz's posts, I am not sure I want him to have more surgery down there. So we are now waiting for another round of semen testing at 18months post op. There is a reasonable chance he'll be fully clear (as it's not a classically failed procedure), but if not maybe he will be done again. Right now, the idea that it was anything to do with giving up other contraception seems like a distant and faintly risible thought.

There, having told you my albatross, I'll point out that taking this long to clearance is also pretty rare. And I hope it goes well for your DH codandchipstwice

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 25/03/2014 12:39

Dh had a quite complicated recovery. He had a testicular torsion as a boy and suffers from regular epididymal cysts so I suppose he might have predicted problems. He is also a v serious cyclist which apparently, can make recovery harder.

Dh is stoic and has a high pain threshold. He does not complain readily. His testicles, top of thighs and perineum were purple and black and he had swelling and two clots in his testicle. For two weeks, he was in a lot of pain. He then got an infection and the swelling was hideous. The stitches refused to dissolve too and ended up infected.
It's been two months now and he is finally cycling again but it is intermittently sore.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 25/03/2014 12:40

DH's was so amazing I watched them do it under local
the little crochet hook and corterising smelled a little weird.

He says that HONESTLY the worst bit was the local anaesthetic injection into his nads was the most painful bit

there were no stitches just a dab of cornflour.
we came home and he snoozed on the sofa took 4 hourly paracetamol interspersed with ibuprofen and by the following morning he said he couldn't tell that they had done anything.

It was done on a Thursday, he had the friday off work and was cautious over the weekend but went back to work without issue on Monday.

Weegiemum · 25/03/2014 12:42

My dh was done on a Thursday, had Friday off work, was back on Monday (but his was under GA).

The biggest lesson to remember us that when your dh walks in and small children shout "Daddy!" and run to greet him, they will make very painful contact! Brought tears to my dh's eyes.

He handed me the form he brought home suggesting "frequent intercourse" to clear out his tubes with a massive grin on his face, though!

mum2jakie · 25/03/2014 12:54

My OH was fine the following day. He actually took my son and friends out to the cinema as it was the oldest one's birthday. He was a little uncomfortable and had some bleeding and, bizarrely, found wearing an opened out nappy under the area helped for the bleeding and comfort!

(Unfortunately, the kids discovered their Dad was wearing a nappy so he was terrified that it was going to be shared with all of the other kids...and their parents!) Probably even more embarrassing was that it was a newborn sized nappy. (Our youngest was only three weeks old at the time!)

My Dad, on the other hand, passed out when he was having his done...

TheFuzz · 26/03/2014 09:35

Good luck is all I can say.

Worst mistake of my life. It's ruined our sex life and a sport I love.

18 months of pain.

Wound didn't heal, lots of swelling, severed blood vessel, and to top it of I'm left with Post Vasectomy Pain Syndrome. I guess the GP hasn't mentioned it. It's as common as 1 in 10. I got it and its horrible.

I've also had to have an epididymectomy on one testicle to see if it helped - it didn't and I'm left with very painful scar tissue that needs heavy pain meds on flare ups. I can't do my sport of cycling to the extent I used to due to severe pain.

Getting frisky causes pain for days after.

Hopefully your partner will be in the 90% it is fine for, but if you are in the 10%, then I am afraid there is little practical help. Reversal is the most successful in reducing pain, but that will cost 3k to 5k.

There is a thread in here with a little more information from me. Got a review coming up shortly, and basically faced with deciding to have the worse ball chopped off. The issue with that is the nerves remain, so I'll still most likely have PVPs.

What makes me angry is the lies the operating GP told me, doesn't exist, even when I went back each time over a period of 3 months. Not till you get to see Urology Specialists do they say it's common and difficult to treat. Even on my second op, the staff said we see lots of men coming in for further operations after having a vasectomy at a GP clinic.

Never ever again. You've been warned.

TheFuzz · 26/03/2014 09:45

Oh and the epididymectomy procedure recovery was actually less painful than the snip, despite the extra operation needing a 4-5ch incision where my testicle was pulled out, plumbing chopped off and it all stitching back to the scrotum - very invasive procedure, but the scar tissue from this is very painful, and it's like having a swollen growth on the inside. Another serious cyclist here, so if your partner is one, I'd think twice about it.

The wound should heal within a week on it's own, if it doesn't close get onto the doctors - mine just gave me mild antibiotic cream that didn't work until I eventually got tablets. I still have to wear 'runners' undies to support mine, even after 18 months. Getting them knocked about is painful.

You'd think such a simple operation couldn't go wrong, but they do, and it's very common. It's also very well hushed up. I have an official complaint in about the lies I was told, so I'll update you all when I know.

At least lefty is completely sterile now - no pipes at all to re-join !

Your DH needs to research the problems. You can get none latex condoms, bit expensive though.

If he's not much of a sports person, then he should fair better.

The GP's are quite happy to do vasectomies as its cheap, quick to do and a nice little earner for the GP that specialises in it. I thought I was geting the experienced guy, but got a new GP that was 'taking over' as the experienced one was retiring. Both lied to me though !

Anyway, I've even joked that this is a bit of an extreme form of contraception. Lucky to get frisky once a month at best - that's a big risk of this procedure.

TheFuzz · 26/03/2014 10:24

The issue is blokes don't talk about these things, so it gets hushed up.

90% are fine, but it's the 10% this can make problems for.

Tell your DH to stay off the bike for at least 2 weeks. At least till there is no wound. I cycle 30 miles each day, and was off the bike 4 weeks with the snip, got back on but was in agony. Then 6 weeks following the epididymectomy.

If anything goes wrong at Marie Stopes, just get seen at the GP. Read the consent form before the operation and it will probably say PVPS is a 1 in 1000 chance. Someone put two extra zero's in. The consent form basically signs your life away, and if you have a problem, it's not their issue. That's what's happened to me. I cant even sue the bastard that butchered me (I've taken legal advice from a proper solicitors - might have to see what a no win no fee ambulance chaser will do).

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 26/03/2014 11:35

Dh cycles 30 miles to work each day. Have heard several times now that cyclists struggle with vasectomies. Though dh is back on the bike, it isn't daily and it hurts. Still in tight pants, can't be naked and will occasionally pause and grimace with slicing, shooting pains. He still can't face sex.

meditrina · 26/03/2014 11:45

DH was done at Marie Stopes. Their doctors perform vasectomies ("no scalpel" and cauterisation method) every working day so are very experienced. According to DH, the smell of singed bollock is very noticeable, so things like Vicks or Tiger Balm round the nostrils might be good for the squeamish.

I've just looked at the online version of the info leaflet, and it just says complications are "very rare" Hmm - not good that they appear to be contradicting NHS and others who cite 1:10.

Marie Stopes do not do onwards treatment for any complications - even for the minor ones like needing antibiotics, you'd need a trip to your own GP.

TheFuzz · 26/03/2014 12:39

The GP that did mine makes virtually no refenrence to complications, just mentions swelling and bruising are common. I've even asked him to make some mention of PVPS on his information leaflet and web site - he hasn't !

codandchipstwice · 26/03/2014 14:13

well, back home, seems totally fine, wonder whether still will be in few hours when the LA wears off.

TheFuzz, that sounds truly awful, I really hope they manage to find some relief for you soon.

Thankfully DH not a cyclist . .
