Mirena Coil and Cycle

Tee2072 · 28/08/2012 09:54

I'm suppose to get the Mirena fitted tomorrow at FPC but I have not started my period. It's over a week late.

I am definitely not pregnant due to the fact that I've barely had time to kiss my husband lately, never mind anything to create a baby, since at least my last period.

I can't cancel the appointment thanks to their stupid 'can only call Wednesday after 130' policy. My appointment is Wednesday at 1. Hmm

So I am going to go but can they fit it anyway, do you think? Does it have to be day 5 - 7?

Well this is interesting as up until about half an hour ago I was in your position.
I'm due to go at 4 this p.m and due to the fact that getting an appt is like winning the lotto, I lied last week when I booked and said I'd be on, as i was due to. I was then a week late, did a test last night and came on this morning. Phew!
I've spoken to lots of people who've had mirena fitted when they've not been on and they've been fine. I'm dreading this later. Dreading it. Sad
I've got pcos and have irregular periods do I'm hoping mirena will help with that too.
Good luck!

Tee2072 · 28/08/2012 11:01

Good luck to you too!

Like I said, I don't have a lot of choice but to go since they apparently only answer their phone for 3 hours a week! I don't what you're suppose to do if you're ill or something.

I'm actually having it done at FPC so they can give me a local anaesthetic as my GP thinks I will be hard to fit. Yay?

Let me know how it goes. Smile

Anyone else have any idea?

it can be fitted at any time in the cycle as long as you know for sure you are not pregnant. You would then have to take extra precautions for the next 7 day after fitting. (you get immediate cover if it is fitted in the first 7 days of your cycle).

I was on the cerazette mini-pill when my mirena was fitted and wasnt having periods so I had to take my mini-pill for the first 7 days of getting the mirena coil.

Lottapianos · 28/08/2012 12:31

I think they only suggest that you come along at a particular point in your cycle to make sure you are not pregnant. If you can't phone until after 1.30 on Weds, there's not much you can do OP - I would just go along for your appointment and I'm sure it will be ok. What a crap service!

By the way, please take painkillers before your fitting. I was warned advised to have some paracetamol beforehand but I toughed it out and it was horrendous. Although apparently I do have a tiny little womb which is very sensitive and spasms if you so much as look at it, so it may just be me! No complaints at all about Mirena by the way - have had it in for 2 and a half years and have not had a period since, just an occasional very light bleed that lasts half a day at most Smile

Tee2072 · 28/08/2012 12:33

Thanks guys. It really is a crap service!

I take paracetamol anyway for other pain issues so I should be covered!

God, I'm getting wound up about it now. Mainly the yuck factor Sad

Lottapianos · 28/08/2012 12:48

Don't worry about the 'yuck' factor. The doctor will have dealt with similar situations many times before. I'm really glad I got my Mirena - I hope it works out just as well for you! As I said, my insertion was difficult and I felt a bit bruised for a couple of days afterwards but it was all worth it.

As always, try to relax, same as with a smear - not easy I know!

vodkaanddietirnbru · 28/08/2012 12:59

the FPC gave me a single dose of Ponstan to take before my appointment to help with any pain/cramping. I'd take some ibuprofen (or similar) before your appointment to minimise pain. I found it uncomfy and a bit of a strange sensation but not sore.

This link explains what will happen during the fitting and describes the instruments used e.g. 'speculum' and the 'sound' before the coil itself is fitted

Lottapianos · 28/08/2012 13:00

OOh Ponstan would be marvellous Smile

Tee2072 · 28/08/2012 13:26

Interesting article, vodka but the Mirena is actually an IUS, not an IUD. Not sure if that matters for insertion, but does matter for some of the other info there!

OP posts:
vodkaanddietirnbru · 28/08/2012 14:00

the insertion method is the same - it didnt give as much info on the IUS page! (sorry should have specified that the info I wanted to give was about the insertion process rather than the IUS/IUD itself)

vodkaanddietirnbru · 28/08/2012 14:01

IUS page

ItsMeYourCathy · 28/08/2012 15:27

Feck feck feck I'm scared Blush
Half an hour to go

vodkaanddietirnbru · 28/08/2012 15:53

hope all is going well and that you had taken some pain relief/have some on standby for afterwards

ItsMeYourCathy · 28/08/2012 17:24

Been! It was okay. OP, you'll be fine. Am rewarding myself with a massive piece of cake Smile

Tee2072 · 28/08/2012 17:50

They didn't care it wasn't day 5-7?!?

Oh gosh maybe this will work then!

OP posts:
ItsMeYourCathy · 28/08/2012 17:51

No. The nurse did a swab and then the dr came and put in the coil. It wasn't quite that simple but it wasn't even close to as awful as I imagined.
You'll be fine. Good luck!

Tee2072 · 29/08/2012 08:27

Yeah I'll be fine if they believe me when I tell them there is no way I'm pregnant.

I could lie and say I'm on day 6 and done bleeding...do you think they'll be able to tell?

OP posts:
BurnThisDiscoDown · 29/08/2012 08:31

I wasn't on when I had mine fitted (hadn't started my periods again since having DS), they did a pregnancy test first then went ahead with it. It was fine, a bit weird but not painful or anything. Good luck!Smile

BellaVita · 29/08/2012 08:34

I had mine fitted without a period back in June. Was fine.

Remember to take it easy for a couple of days.

Tee2072 · 29/08/2012 08:38

Yeah, cuz my 3 year olds gonna let me do that, Bella! Grin

Tee2072 · 29/08/2012 14:40

Well that's me. I would say it wasn't toooo bad. The doctor was fantastic as was her nurse. A bit crampy now.

Thanks everyone for the help!

OP posts:
BellaVita · 29/08/2012 16:53

I was crampy too, hope they subside soon.

After a couple of weeks of (tmi) brown sludgy stuff, everything has settled down nicely and it was great having a period free holiday for once.
