Mirena coil

MrsGokWan · 20/07/2010 17:53

I have been thinking about the mirena coil for ages but the more I read up about it the more it scares me.

I am on anti depresants and I have read that the coil can make it worse or cause depression where there was none before. Plus a multitude of other side effects.

Would any mirena ladies be kind enough to tell how they have faired with it. Good and bad stories.

Can't comment on the anti depressants I'm afraid.

I've had no side effects, none, well apart from having no more periods which is utterly wonderful.

Have you discussed it with the family planning people or your GP?

MrsGokWan · 20/07/2010 19:50

Yep! but they are saying how wonderful it is and will change my life. When I pointed to what I had read my GP was 'meh' not heard or read that. Wish I could find the link now.

Then I have read about people becoming pregnant, or really bad periods and harrowing pain.

Maybe I should stop reading

I have recently had my coil removed to TTC DC3, but for the 14 or so months it was in, it was the best contraception I have found so far. Had NO side effects at all.

If anything, since having it taken out, I have had some side effects, but am putting that down to my hormones adjusting. Have been feeling down and have broken out in a lot of spots. Think these side effects are on the way out now, after 3 weeks.

Should DH and I be successful (fingers crossed!) in brewing up another DC, I wouldn't hesitate in having another Mirena.

Hope this helps

Madasahatteraswell · 06/08/2010 00:26

Please, please proceed with care. I've had an awful couple of years and it could be down to the Mirena coil, I won't know for sure until I get the wretched thing removed but I would hate to see another family go through what mine has if at all possible. search hair loss, weight gain, depression, anxiety, acne, nervousness, mood swings and mind fog. But remember, many women have had good results from it too x

cowboylover · 12/08/2010 18:07

I had a copper coil which was awful but the Mirena was excellent for me but I did put on weight as I found it hard to control my appitite.

I was on Anti-depressants as well and they where not concered that it would effect them or make me feel better or worse?

I think with all most of contraceptives there are many side effects out there that could happen to some but for most they dont.

Good luck in whatever you decide x

von81 · 18/08/2010 19:35

My sister has mirena coil, she has hair loss, weight gain and can be an absolute monster at times!! Ive got the copper one and so far loving it!

neverlookback · 20/08/2010 15:40

ive got the copper at the moment but i get really bad pmt so was thinking of switching to mirena to hopefully stop periods, so does the mirena actually stop ovulation?

Fontella · 20/08/2010 20:04

Mrs Gok Wan, I'm due to have mine taken out under sedation on Monday and have just been searching online to find out a bit more of what's involved. Two previous attempts to get it out failed (strings have disappeared and they couldn't locate it despite digging around for the best part of half an hour) - the pain was indescribable so I am really scared. I hope the pain relief is good because I don't fancy going through that again.

However re your post - I just read that doctors are asked to remove 25% of all mirenas fitted - long before they are due for removal, because of adverse side effects - that's 1 in 4, which seems pretty high to me. For some people it's brilliant, but for a quarter of all woman it's problematic.

carocaro · 27/08/2010 22:19

I had one fitted 3 weeks ago and so far so good, I have hideous heavy periods, so heavy I can't leave the house. I know several people who have said it's been the best thing they have ever done!

I feel good about having one as I was so depressed with the shitty periods and I am overweight to begin with!

NK13d478afX128a8c9e1dc · 08/01/2011 23:35

I had the Mirena coil removed 3 days ago and am feeling better already.

Where do I start, I had it fitted 11 weeks ago and over the last 4 weeks have started to feel anxious, very panicky, unsettled, headaches, nightmares, heat across the left hand side of my back and complete lack of sex drive.

I have a 6 month old daughter and am completely happy and settled so could not imagine what on earth was causing this, which was adding to my anxiety, I just happened to Google the Mirena coil and anxiety / depression and could not believe the stories I read, all stating the same side effects.

I still didnt think it could be related to the coil as I had had the mirena for 10 years previously, until I realised that during these 10 years I suffered with anxiety, depression hence I took anti depressants, you do the maths! If only I had known about the side effects then

I immediately made an appointment with my doctor to have it removed and they were not very keen but I insisted I wanted it out, I was literally shaking with anxiety in the doctors and they said that maybe it was post natal depression but I said I am the happiest I have ever been and that I felt completely not myself, I didnt want to tell them how bad I felt as I was worried they would want to monitor me looking after my daughter.

I cannot tell you how different I feel, back to my bubbly, confident self again and calm and peaceful again, my husband says the difference is clear. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go with your instinct and do NOT rule out the coil giving you these horrible side effects, the doctors insist it is not the coil, but you only have to look on the internet to see different. I am going to write on as many websites as I can, even if it only helps one person, good luck.

Kazjas · 18/01/2011 18:33

I've had the mirena for about 3 months. I bled constantly for the first 6 weeks and have put on lots of weight despite following the Slim Fast Diet for the past 2 1/2 weeks and doing 5 hours of fitness every week I have still not lost a pound. I don't eat junk and eat only what is allowed on the slim fast plan. No alcohol has passed my lips and I have suffered back pain and felt really tired as well. I went back to the Doctor who told me to persevere for another month but I don't think I can. I think I will be making an appointment to get it removed as soon as possible.

Dutchie77 · 21/01/2011 15:52

I had the mirena for 3 years. I had no problems whatsoever. I had a normal cycle op 28 days. I took it because of my sever PMS.It has been taken out last tuesday and I feel horrible. My hormone balans is completely out of tune.

My advice: don't reed too much on the internet about it. There are only horror stories out there while it can be just right for you.

BeckyMH · 03/02/2011 15:55

I have had a Mirena in place for over 5 years and I recommend it. My periods are much lighter and it has been an effective contraception.
Disadvantages I have experienced are a prolonged bleeding for the first 6 months and an increase in the number of infections like thrush and BV.
On balance it has worked well and I have had none of the unpleasant mood swings described by other users.

Kazjas · 03/02/2011 21:02

Well I got the Mirena Coil out yesterday and it was a painless removal. My stomach has already shrunk as I was really bloated and miserable all the time. I slept a lot better yesterday night and I feel more energized so it definitely wasn't agreeing with me. Hopefully in a few weeks I will be posting that I have lost some of the weight that I put on with the Mirena. It may be great for lots of people but I can only comment on how it was for me. Good luck to you all!

jonina · 05/02/2011 17:58

Had my Mirena removed last week, after persevering for 6 months. During that time, there were at most five days when I wasn't bleeding/spotting, my breasts were huge and painful, increasing so, my appetite was huge and my partner could feel the wires! The headaches and mood swings weren't fun either.

mumtojandk · 15/02/2011 21:09

I had the mirena fitted in Apr10 2 months after birth of DD #2. I had no side effects and found it great. My periods were regular but amounted to very little bleed over only a couple of days. I have had PND in the past with DD#1 and been on prozac/sertraline. The mirena didn't make me depressed or affect my moods at all and I think I'd have noticed.

I had it removed in Nov10 so we can try for #3 and the opposite is true! My cycle is up the creek...28days, 25days, and now 35 days! My last 2 periods have been awful, lots of blood loss...similar to after child birth....super tampons flooded in 2/3hrs - even at night! It only lasts 2/3 days but feels like forever.

Re the weight issue - I didn't put on any weight and my weight remained static all last year but this past 6 weeks I have definitely lost weight, down a dress size (14 to 12)....then again I am being more careful about what/how much I eat. Until I read up online about my ridiculous periods post removal I had never heard of the link to weight with the mirena.

If we're lucky enough to have another then I wouldn't hesitate in having the mirena fitted again.....the heavy periods won;t be an issue as #3 is definitely the last!

You just have to do what feels right for you. We are all different. I have friends who had copper coil fitted and had cramps for a while afterwards.

Best of luck making the right choice for you!

teddymummy · 15/02/2011 22:15

I am due to have a new one fitted next week, having had mine for 5 years. I don't think it has caused any side effects and not having any periods is great. Just wondered about the pain of having one removed and replaced at the same time- can anyone tell me what its like? Thanks

fusspot66 · 15/02/2011 22:24

I'm delighted with this, my 2nd Mirena. First one removed after 3 years. Had DC2 then latest one went in. I can think of 3 friends with it who are very pleased too. I was unaware of the more gruesome problems people are reporting. Forewarned is forearmed if you have a problem I suppose.Good luck!

DJGemini · 02/04/2011 08:59

I have had the Mirena coil for nearly 3 years. I agonised for a long time whether to have it at first, reading horror stories really didn't help!
In the end I felt it might be worth taking my GP's advice because not only was I looking for a contraceptive, but I was suffering from very heavy periods and PMT. He swore by it, but being a man I was scepitcal Ha, I believed his professional judgement and feedback He had from his patients.

Relieved to have found it to works for me. It was painless when I had it fitted, at first I did bleed for a while, but then I found I have no periods at all! Bliss, I have a little show once a month, and no associated nightmare PMT.* (occassional breast tenderness, and once a month bloat)
I admit my hormones have given me grief all of my life, I never got on with the combined pill or mini pill, in my 20's. However after the birth of my DS now 6, I put off thinking about contraception for about a year, relying on condoms, In the end, it was my GP who suggested the coil to help with heavy periods,

*And I take a supplement Agnus Castus - from a well know Health food shop, and I truely believe this helps me. If I run out and leave it too long before taking again, My husband practically marches me to the shop to buy more! Ha.

I am coming up to 3 years and I can't remember what the next step is? Do I have it changed? checked? I will contact my GP. I think I can safely say I will continue, I am dreading having periods again :-(

I hope that anyone who is thinking about having it fitted, gives it a try, not everything is right for everyone, but it's worth a try. I really feel for anyone who has not got on with it.
Good Luck Ladies!
p.s I also take anti-depressants, I have done on and off for years, I started again due to anxiety, following a bereavement, which was before having the Mirena fitted. I don't feel this effects things.

elliep1968 · 03/04/2011 05:05

Had the Mirena fitted under GA 7 weeks ago for treatment of endometriosis. Since insertion have had abdominal pain, heavy to moderate bleeding, insomnia, sore breasts, bloating and a weight gain of 7lbs. Mood swings are bad.

Went back to see my gyn 2 weeks ago and asked that they remove it, but she couldn't find the strings or locate it. Was told that I'd have to have a scan to locate - am still waiting for the scan appointment.
Am worried how they are going to get this thing out of me. Wish I'd never agreed to have the Mirena.

emmy12 · 08/04/2011 18:08

Me too elliep. I finally had mine out under general anaesthetic about 10 days ago. The only other person I know who had one had exactly the same problem - couldn't find strings. I'm beginning to wonder how common this is. I think it did affect my mood in a negative way. But I guess it just depends on the individual as there do seem to be lots of positive stories.

jellyvodkas · 26/05/2011 19:50

Good here, although When i first had it in I had 2 episodes of really heavy bleeding... but now in my 3 yr of having it, I havnt had a period in a whole year...mind you I am 52yrs.

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 29/05/2011 20:52

Hi all - have been reading this with keen interest as have been seriously considering it myself - for well over a year now ha ha Only thing I'm a bit worried about is that my HV told me I'd have to have it fitted mid-way through my period which to me sounds absolutely disgusting - I'm no prude but I do have horrifically heavy periods and get the feeling it would look like something out of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre if I went for it!

Thanks!
Sx
