Is fishing really an icky hobby for a man?

My uncle, and an ex used to like fishing. I can take it or leave it. Does seem boring. Not sure if it would put me off a guy if I was single though. DH is an amateur fishkeeper, which is a different kettle of fish (pun intended).
The reason I ask is because there is that 'girls is players too' Tinder advert that keeps coming up. The 'lucky' man's profile says "the only fish you'll see in my hand is sushi" before he's selected. Also I have seen comments on discussions about off-putting men on OLD. One thing that apparently puts people off is men holding fish.

Maybe because it can be a time consuming hobby? Or do some men bring home the whole fish expecting it to be cleaned and gutted for them... now that would REALLY put me off a guy.

I used to work at a fishery and campsite. They mostly seemed to enjoy sitting by themselves and drinking beer. I rarely saw women with them.

I suspect that’s why women avoid blokes cradling huge fish.

theduchessofspork · 01/12/2023 22:18

Cradling a fish is not an appealing vision

I don’t think I could rally an opinion about the odd fishing trip, but if you mean every weekend then no, too time consuming

Leafysuburb · 01/12/2023 22:20

I have a cousin who is big into fishing. He goes off for days at a time to smoke weed in a tend by the river

Wanttobeok · 01/12/2023 22:21

No it isn't

Wanttobeok · 01/12/2023 22:23

In fact, if I was online dating (thankfully years behind me) it would appeal to me

Better than a picture of a bloke on a night out with the lads or showing his abdomen in a mirror

It shows he has an interest other than drinking and shagging

Worriednanof1 · 01/12/2023 22:23

I would be put off a man if he enjoyed any type of blood sport, fishing included.

Applerumleandcustard · 01/12/2023 22:23

DH likes going fishing , it’s fine
He goes out for the day / evening
Meets up with the chaps from his local fishing club ( they have matches twice a month , and a meeting to arrange them )
He fishes from the beach , and there are very strict rules about size of fish you’re allowed , so rarely brings anything back , and if he does he cleans , scales etc
Not icky at all

Ponderingwindow · 01/12/2023 22:26

My mother loved fishing. It’s one of the reasons she married my father. They went fishing on their honeymoon.

I’m not personally a fan, but it never occurred to me that it was off-putting.

LauderSyme · 01/12/2023 22:27

No it isn't icky. I think it's kind of weird to think it is, but we have an avid angler in the family and I understand him and why he loves it so much. We've got tons of pics of him cradling fish and we treasure them!

It's clearly not everyone's cup of tea but that's life, right? I mean I think showing dogs is icky but plenty would disagree.

RedVanYellowVan · 01/12/2023 22:28

It's a blood sport. I would be no more interested in a man who goes fishing than a man who went foxhunting or badger baiting.

I would not want to be in a relationship with someone who maimed and possibly killed creatures for fun. Cruelty isn't a trait which appeals to me.

Hbh17 · 01/12/2023 22:30

Fishing is not my thing, but everyone needs hobbies that are just for them. If it gives them time alone, all the better. It makes couples stronger, imo, if they do some things together but other things apart and separately - being joined at the hip is just depressing. So fishing us fine.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 01/12/2023 22:36

I work next to a fishing loch. People just turn up on their own and take a boat out for 3-4 hours. They are allowed to take one fish and they rest have to be released. Seems harmless enough (time consuming though) to me.

blackbeardsballsack · 01/12/2023 22:44

I would much rather that, than the type of man who is out with the 'lads' until 5am

flowerchild2000 · 01/12/2023 22:45

It's a joke- for some reason 90% of OLD profiles feature a fish. It's so prevalent and it a turn on. It's not a turn off exactly but extremely anti-climatic and boring. Men's profiles in general are not as great as they think they are.

There isn't much blood in a fish.

Ragwort · 01/12/2023 22:46

Much rather a man who goes fishing than spends time gaming .....

OnAir · 01/12/2023 22:47

Me and my dp go together. Have a right laugh, Chat and just spend time together. Throughly enjoy it.

Wanttobeok · 01/12/2023 22:53

I love fishing and have a vagina.

It's not a male only sport

Wanttobeok · 01/12/2023 22:54

Also not a blood sport

You don't know much about it really do you? Most fish are not caught and killed, they are caught and released. Some fishermen (and women) are careless with hooks etc but most are not. Many people who enjoy fishing are lovers of nature and actively work to preserve the environment and protect wildlife.

Digestivechocolate · 01/12/2023 23:03

My ex husband used to go fishing all the time.. l went with him a few times.. l was bored.. but did you know it's the most participated sport in the world?
P.S Sushi isn't fish.. it's a vinger rice.. usually eaten with fish. But can be used with anything even vegetables.

User3456 · 01/12/2023 23:07

Yes it's icky. Anyone causing unnecessary distress to creatures, for their own entertainment is a big turn off. It would be a definite no from me.

Museum10660 · 01/12/2023 23:13

i guess for me its the waiting and no certainy of a catch, unless im reading while fishing etc then ill consider it, but overall not too fussed about fishing

WhatYouWearing · 01/12/2023 23:16

Some posters on here struggling to see fishing as cruel just because the fish are 'released' after having a hook ripped out of them. Fish feel pain. It's so backward. Not an appealing trait in a man. The only men I know who fish are misogynistic arseholes 'getting away from her indoors'.
