Is 8.30am acceptable time for piano practise?

We live in a semi and our piano is on the side of our neighbours (not by choice- but only place available due to position of heating et al)
Both my children plays the piano and I have always made sure that piano practise is during acceptable hours 6-7pm during term hours and after 10am weekends.

However- due to lockdown- my sons actual lessons are now at home, weekends 8-10am. (Normally we go to the teachers house at 8am)

I have done everything I can to delay touching the piano first thing and the first 30 minutes is spent on theory, thus the noise starts at 8.30am.

The children are grades 4 & 5 and they are actually playing the piano rather than piano bashing. Youngest is age 7 and still go to sleep very early. The piano teacher does not have any other slots.

Is 8.30am too early?
Does anyone know the legality of piano playing at such hours?
AIBU?

I don't know about the legality but do feel it's a bit early yes

ButterMeUpScotty · 29/11/2020 09:07

Yes it’s too flipping early! 10am onwards acceptable. You know rightly 8.30am is not ok!

AaronPurr · 29/11/2020 09:07

I think it's too early, especially as it's on a neighbouring wall.

Looneytune253 · 29/11/2020 09:08

Oooh defo too early on a weekend sorry I'd be furious

Wolfiefan · 29/11/2020 09:09

Speak to the neighbours. They are the only opinion that matters.
See if you can move the piano or sound proof in any way.

Takethewinefromtheswine · 29/11/2020 09:09

Yes, definitely too early, your poor neighbours!

SamsMumsCateracts · 29/11/2020 09:10

We are having a very similar issue with early lessons. We bought a cheaper digital piano and moved it to the opposite side of the house, which was a pain in itself because we had to move other furniture for it, but at least we can control the volume now. So far, my ndn says that she can't hear anything.

borageforager · 29/11/2020 09:10

It is quite early. But they may not mind. Hard to advise really... you could look up the local council statements about noise nuisance to see if it’s objectionable legally.

SamsMumsCateracts · 29/11/2020 09:10

They still do their practicing on the upright, but lessons are on the digital for now.

BawJaws · 29/11/2020 09:11

Why can’t you schedule your lessons later? As a piano player with musical children, it’s far too early

Enko · 29/11/2020 09:11

Yes speak yo tour neighbours and explain the situation. X neighbour used to play Saturday morning from about 8 am but he was amazing and we loved listening. And it was only the one day

mocktail · 29/11/2020 09:11

It's rather early. I'd speak to the neighbours and see what they think. I wouldn't mind and I know my parents wouldn't mind either, but some would hate it!

ASimpleLobsterHat · 29/11/2020 09:12

BIL has a thick rug fixed to the wall behind his piano as it’s on a shared wall - it seems to help deaden the sound. I don’t personally think 8:30 is too early, but as this thread shows, some do. Maybe speak to your neighbours and see what they think. We’re all up by 8:30 so it wouldn’t bother me.

Overcovid · 29/11/2020 09:12

Have they complained? My kids practise at 7.15 & I have never thought about the time( although we are detached) Our neighbour has said she enjoys hearing them!

Ace1185 · 29/11/2020 09:13

Far to early! And I would not be happy if you were my neighbours! No earlier than 10am in my opinion

HmmSureJan · 29/11/2020 09:13

Too early. Though I'll be interested in the answers on this thread as I remember a similar one a few years ago where the majority asserted that music practice was essential and neighbour's must suck it up! People where very angry on that thread Grin.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 29/11/2020 09:13

Wow Id hate that. I'd say no if uou value neighbourly relations!

Shinyletsbebadguys · 29/11/2020 09:13

I'd speak to your neighbours. I mean when my DC are not at their dads on a weekend it wouldn't be a problem for us as neighbours because we are up and about by then. If the DC are at their df then yes honestly I would be annoyed at being disturbed that early.

Having said that if the neighbour came around apologised and explained I'd be ok with it in the spirit of community so to speak.

Go and talk to them

HmmSureJan · 29/11/2020 09:14

Neighbours and were.

AaronPurr · 29/11/2020 09:14

My kids practise at 7.15 & I have never thought about the time

Shock That's super early.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/11/2020 09:15

Talk to your neighbours. I would be a bit irritated by piano playing at 8.30 on a Sunday... But if a neighbour actually said it was a lesson time and you couldn't go to the teachers house, I would be more sympathetic.

Is there anyway you can soundproof it? Foam or something behind the piano? And not touching the wall.

At least it isn't Grade 1 violin or a trumpet... Obviously kids have to start somewhere, but the early stage can be painful.b

Angel2702 · 29/11/2020 09:15

Completely unacceptable you might like the sound of piano but I wouldn’t want to be woken that early on a weekend to that noise. Being piano music doesn’t make it any more acceptable than playing any other type of music that early in the morning.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 29/11/2020 09:15

If they are good players, it wouldn't bother me but l am an early bird anyway - be different if l ever got in a lie in!

Bagadverts · 29/11/2020 09:16

Ask your neighbours, everyone is so individual. Personally I’d hate it that early on a weekend.

ZolaGrey · 29/11/2020 09:16

We have a piano, I wouldn't let them play at 8.30am.
