Sporty child: training more or less cancelled...any suggestions for the coming weeks?

Just that really. For the moment we are minus 7 1/2 hours of hard swim training and no sports fixtures at school.

I am sure the sports centres will close shortly.

Does anybody know about those things you can put on bikes to make them indoor?

I've not looked for 1980s aerobics videos on Youtube, but I hope not to have to do this.

Following! My DC's do something every day normally. We've got a tiny garden, so I need some inspiration for keeping them active Confused

Stumpedasatree · 17/03/2020 19:48

I will be taking mine for runs with me and the dog. Daily, probably.

CMOTDibbler · 17/03/2020 19:51

Decathlon have got the turbo trainers for putting bikes on for £80. It isn't very exciting doing turbo, but better than nothing. We have a smart trainer that integrates with Zwift and makes indoor cycling much better.

If you have Sky, then Fit in 5 is good and the red ones are proper hard work.

okiedokieme · 17/03/2020 19:55

Running outside isn't banned nor cycling, not even in Italy or Spain

PlugUgly1980 · 17/03/2020 20:00

We have a treadmill and turbo trainers for bikes. Agrees that a smart turbo trainer is better do you can subscribe to a package like Zwift which gives you a virtual reality ride, and the option to join lots of different training rides. We have both for training when our kids are in bed on and evening. Our plan though is still going out either on bikes or for a walk (or run!) daily as you can't beat the fresh air.

I'm dreading when they cancel swim training. DS's team is still going. He'll be unbearable down 10 hours of proper exercise a week.

Turning his bike into an exercise bike is a good call. DP has weights in the shed too - he can teach him to use them. And go running with him. And DS can do Pilates with me (and realise that even pregnant I'm better at planks than he is 😆).

randomsabreuse · 17/03/2020 20:05

HIIT videos might appeal - Fitness Blender might have some cooler trainers with no / minimal equipment or bodyweight stuff.

Any normal land based training routines?

Circuits in the garden/house.

lorisparkle · 17/03/2020 20:15

My ds has a pull up bar that goes on the door frame.

Madcats · 17/03/2020 20:44

Good ideas here. If anybody has tried and tested things for sporty children that work... I am seeing a lot of reviews on Amazon about kit that is helping people lose a few Kg (though that will be me) rather than super-sporty kids that need to be stretched.

Bless her, I think she is currently playing basketball on our geriatric wii fit.

Small, sloping, city garden but maybe we should all get digging when school gets closed!

Actually in Spain you can't practice exercise outside. Here in France it's possible at the moment with an attestation but if people abuse we will lose that right. Make the must of your pools and guys while you can, we can't do any communal sports at all, just walking, running or cycling alone and for a short time.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 17/03/2020 21:07

If you do manage to get either a turbo trainer or rollers then Zwift is free for kids.

ExpletiveDelighted · 17/03/2020 21:23

Our Swimming Club has shut down as of tonight as per the latest Swim England advice. That's all our sports gone now. Our club coaches are going to try and set up online land training sessions. We will also be walking and running.

PickledLilly · 17/03/2020 21:28

Watching with interest. My daughter’s gymnastics club is still running at the moment but I can’t see that lasting and her behaviour always seems to spiral out of control on the odd occasion they close. She was dreadful over Christmas and no amount of walks in the woods seemed to help. She really seems to need that high intensity exercise.

OneThousandthNameChange · 17/03/2020 21:39

Same problem here :(

Redcrayons · 17/03/2020 21:45

Same here. Down 4 hours of training and 2 hours of playing at weekend.

Barbeasty · 18/03/2020 10:25

Our swimming club is still training for now, but it was agreed last night that when they have to close the head coach will be emailing out regular land training tailored for each squad.

sashh · 18/03/2020 10:48

Skipping? No one cat get within a meter of someone with a skipping rope and it is a dying art.

Bookishandblondish · 18/03/2020 10:55

For gymnastics, some of the US gyms are posting conditioning routines that look pretty hardcore but can be done at home. I think there will be a flood of home based routines from different sports teams on twitter etc.

KatyMac · 18/03/2020 10:57

All of DD's class venues have closed - so she has set up on Twitch (whatever that is) and is running online classes for everyone - she re-organised within 12 hours of her first class cancelling

fedup2017 · 18/03/2020 11:43

Same problem. 4 boys and all swimming football and tennis cancelled now. Have told older ones they will be coming for a very early run with me if no symptoms in house. We also have a treadmill in the garage. The 10 year old will play just dance on the PlayStation. I think I may start looking at hit type YouTube videos..... They also challenging each other for the house planking record...

BlueGheko · 18/03/2020 11:51

Same, down 6 hours of football. At the moment Ds is still going the local astro pitches and playing footie with friends after school, they're all still in school together anyway. He also cycles to school, am hoping we'll still be able to go out for bike rides for the foreseeable. In the case of total isolation, we have a small garden and a skipping rope. I work out at home so have weights/resistance bands etc, going to try to find child friendly workouts on YouTube.

squintsoftheworldunite · 18/03/2020 17:03

My dancer will be doing daily cardio sessions and min4 x online classes a week, plus normal daily conditioning. I don't know if there's anything similar for other sports - training exercises etc.

DisasterousManagementPlan · 18/03/2020 19:51

I'm now awaiting an email from our club about what they want the kids to do until swim training resumes. Whenever that may be. I assume there'll be some land training stuff they want them to do.

Madcats · 18/03/2020 20:25

I follow a few swimmers on Twitter. One is about to release a load of land training ones (not sure whether £ are involved). Do we want links to various sports here or on separate sports threads? DD is 12, so no immediate sporting ambitions, but I really feel for the kids hoping to trial for Tokyo squads.

Hopefully our bike thingy will arrive shortly. DD and friends are too busy WhatsApping about school closure for her to pester me too much, but she wasn't happy when I reminded her that we will need to cut down her food intake.

You will all be on lockdown like we are on continental Europe soon so best to find activities to do in the house and garden for your DC. Mine are loving the weeding and other jobs needed in the garden 😅
