August Music Thread

Welcome to the new music thread for August - a place to discuss anything you like to do with learning instruments/ singing. We have child and adult learners on here, and all standards from toddlers experimenting with music to the very advanced.

It's coming up to 7 years since I started the first thread, and I have been flagging a bit lately due to a long illness. When I started the first one, my daughter Goo had just turned 6 and was about to take her Grade 1 recorder exam! She is now 12 (13 in two months), has done her Grade 8 Flute (result currently under appeal), is thinking about Grade 8 Recorder next year (having not played since Year 6) and is learning the piano. Piano hasn't gone well this term. Her teacher has been going on lots of last minute holidays and also has another job now, so Goo has only had two piano lessons since Easter. Teacher has now decided to retire from teaching, so we need to find a new one. Goo has never, ever performed on the piano and hasn't taken any exams either. She has been learning since she was 10, and was recently learning pieces by Bach and Chopin, although I have no idea what she is practising at the moment.

I also have Rara (10) who plays the cello, clarinet and recorder at a good Grade 4 level. It doesn't come naturally to her at all, but she's more inclined to work at things... when it suits her. She plays the clarinet most, but swears she's in love with the cello. Her bass clef reading definitely seems stronger. We have started and stopped theory three times. I think she is more than capable of doing it, but she's distractible, longwinded and feels the need to reinvent the wheel. I have decided to wait until she's ready to do the whole lot in one go... hopefully when she is a bit more mature and developmentally ready. Goo had it done and dusted at the same age and I find it hard not to worry about Rara at times, but in many ways she's just as able... but on her own timeline.

I usually have 80-90 woodwind pupils on my books - mostly recorder these days, although I'm a clarinettist really. I currently have a clutch of little clarinets, a couple of flutes and a good saxophone pupil, so plenty of variety.

well done to mini worried and raspberry.

Just been watching some of the NCO videos. Trumpet DD recognised your son from school. Very talented.

These posts have made me realise as a non musical mum that I had no idea about all the opportunities for musical minis. I’ve just discovered there’s a county string group and wondered if DD should apply. The entry criteria says grade 4+ and DD passed grade 4 in April but are these county orchestras just for the elite?

Wafflenose · 19/08/2018 16:28

County orchestras are usually for anyone who hits the standard, as long as they have space. Currently trying to persuade DD1 to apply. Go for it!

I love pandas no she should definitely apply . How funny that they go to the same school Smile

Mendingfences · 19/08/2018 16:58

Great exam results and lovely to hear about the dcs enjoying nco. I'd go for the county orchestra if you dd is interested pandas not only is it a great oppotunity for more playing in itself, it's probably a good way to get more in the loop regarding what else is going on.

Ds did brilliantly at his concert yesterday although he looked tiny on stage, he's only 8, the next youngest is 11 and he ended up standing next to one of the 18 year olds for the final bow 😁

LouieLouie0603 · 19/08/2018 19:57

Under 10 Concert was great, dd (9)(percussionist) had a great time. Well done all. Saw Waffle- sorry didn’t see anyone else 😊

Doubleup · 19/08/2018 20:51

DD2 safely deposited at U11s where I ended up standing in the checking in line immediately behind Patrick and family. Nice to have a chat face to face!

stringchild · 19/08/2018 22:17

Ilovepandas - I would go for it; dd wants to join ours and I need to work ou5 how logistics would work travel wise.

TaggieOHara · 19/08/2018 23:10

louie I looked out for you, waffle and others from the threads but couldn’t spot anyone! I was the flustered brown haired woman, trying to repack a suitcase in the car park (DS2 emerged with arms full of clothes/shoes and a half empty case!)

double - glad to hear you are not still stuck at stone henge. No sign of Patrick this evening though...

PatricksViolin · 20/08/2018 09:29

Thanks to the kind advice, we set off early and managed to arrive in time after having lovely lunch on way (even though we had to return to grab DS's concert clothes after 20 mins drive away!).

Lovely to see Double and her dd. Shame I didn't manage to spot anyone else, but of course I couldn't as I don't know how you all look like!

Have you heard anything from your DCs? Do you know when they have time to make a phone call? I assume it'll be in the evening?? My phone has poor battery life at the moment (visiting Apple this week) so I have to be careful about charging and usage. Knowing when DS is likely to call will be helpful...

stringchild · 20/08/2018 10:21

Patrick - I think they get them in the afternoon (2.30) for recreational ;def not in morning

PatricksViolin · 20/08/2018 10:53

Thanks string. I'll make sure my phone is not dead then!

DS was a bit teary when the first rehearsal started. He is usually fine with residential holiday as excitement seems to take over anxiety. He said he didn't miss me at all at each trip in the past. So it's quite unusual of him being teary.

We saw a few from his JD, not only children but staff too. Hopefully those people's presence helps him feel at ease and is not feeling so teary now.

TaggieOHara · 20/08/2018 12:10

patrick DS2 was also unusually anxious when I dropped him off. I think it was the sheer size of the place and the number of people he didn’t know. He knew no-one at all (adults or children). But he settled in really fast because the dorms and sectionals encourage a ready made social group. I’m sure your DS will be okay! DS2 had a great week and made loads of friends.

DS2 rang at about 4 pm most days because the first part of recreational time tended to be an organised activity. Of course, it may be different for U11s. I was a gibbering wreck until he rang for the first time to say he was ok.

Doubleup · 20/08/2018 12:37

I had 3 very brief texts last night, but only to say what she’d had for tea, that she was having hot chocolate and thanks for her coat which she’d left in the car.

PatricksViolin · 20/08/2018 13:08

Oh so they had access to their phone last night. Wondering why DS didn't contact me. He called me earlier today though, just to let me know his bracelet was broken (it's his lucky charm) then he said he would call me later in the afternoon. Feeling tiny bit of guilty that I didn't really help him prepare for the course properly. Kids there looked super great. Hopefully DS is managing alright!

PatricksViolin · 20/08/2018 13:14

I noticed one girl in the second violin who was absolutely stunning at a festival. I also noticed a few in the first violin who are also brilliant but not as stunning as the girl. It's just so obvious as she was quite special. Interesting how NCO decide who does 1st and 2nd. It doesn't seem to be based on ability.

catkind · 20/08/2018 13:52

Don't know about NCO patrick, but you do need 1st and second violins balanced to make a good orchestra. Some youth orchestras' habit of having all the best violinists in the 1sts does not make for a good overall sound. My adult amateur orchestras tend to rotate people between the two, I would imagine kids orchestras would gain even more from doing that. Hope they're all having fun and can spare a minute to reassure anxious elders Wink

PatricksViolin · 20/08/2018 14:11

Well, DS said he would call me between 2 to 3 pm today so I am checking my phone constantly....

folkmamma · 20/08/2018 15:37

Patrick - they will move them around throughout the week. Although 1sts will stay in 1sts and 2nds in 2nds, the seating order will be jiggled to give them experience at sitting front/back/inside/outside. They decide on final seating order and leader nearer the end of the week. As Cat said, they try to mix the abilities to get a balanced sound, not just 1sts/2nds, but also front/back. It's taken me ages to get my head around this, coming from a background where seating order was definitely pecking order!

Wafflenose · 20/08/2018 18:22

In the older orchestras, they often play 1st on one course and 2nd on the next, or vice versa. They split the very best players between the two sections, and scatter them around.

PatricksViolin · 20/08/2018 19:06

Makes sense. That's how JD's orchestra works too.

Managed to speak to DS! He said he missed me but was also having fun so 'please don't worry too much, mum.'

Feel crap that I showed him my worries and was reassured by a 11 years old that everything was OK'. Which one is a child?!

TabbyTigger · 20/08/2018 19:14

Glad your DS is settling patrick! Hopefully you can settle a little too now...

folkmamma · 20/08/2018 19:59

@PatricksViolin do t feel bad. I outright bribed Noo to ring me on her last residential 😂

PatricksViolin · 20/08/2018 20:07

Now, assuming DS has access to his mobile this time of a day, I can't stop checking my phone non-stop! 😂

folkmamma · 20/08/2018 20:10

Lol! What will you be like in September?? 🤪

Noo Just had a trial lesson with a new piano teacher- it went very well!

LouieLouie0603 · 20/08/2018 20:29

He’ll be fine Patrick’s- if they don’t ring- that’s a good sign, shows he’s happy.
Mine hasn’t rang tonight either.... 🤣
