August Music Thread

Welcome to the new music thread for August - a place to discuss anything you like to do with learning instruments/ singing. We have child and adult learners on here, and all standards from toddlers experimenting with music to the very advanced.

It's coming up to 7 years since I started the first thread, and I have been flagging a bit lately due to a long illness. When I started the first one, my daughter Goo had just turned 6 and was about to take her Grade 1 recorder exam! She is now 12 (13 in two months), has done her Grade 8 Flute (result currently under appeal), is thinking about Grade 8 Recorder next year (having not played since Year 6) and is learning the piano. Piano hasn't gone well this term. Her teacher has been going on lots of last minute holidays and also has another job now, so Goo has only had two piano lessons since Easter. Teacher has now decided to retire from teaching, so we need to find a new one. Goo has never, ever performed on the piano and hasn't taken any exams either. She has been learning since she was 10, and was recently learning pieces by Bach and Chopin, although I have no idea what she is practising at the moment.

I also have Rara (10) who plays the cello, clarinet and recorder at a good Grade 4 level. It doesn't come naturally to her at all, but she's more inclined to work at things... when it suits her. She plays the clarinet most, but swears she's in love with the cello. Her bass clef reading definitely seems stronger. We have started and stopped theory three times. I think she is more than capable of doing it, but she's distractible, longwinded and feels the need to reinvent the wheel. I have decided to wait until she's ready to do the whole lot in one go... hopefully when she is a bit more mature and developmentally ready. Goo had it done and dusted at the same age and I find it hard not to worry about Rara at times, but in many ways she's just as able... but on her own timeline.

I usually have 80-90 woodwind pupils on my books - mostly recorder these days, although I'm a clarinettist really. I currently have a clutch of little clarinets, a couple of flutes and a good saxophone pupil, so plenty of variety.

I took my oboe to Howarth's today. It has been sitting in a cupboard at my parents' house for about 20 years. I was hoping to have it serviced so I could start playing again.

When the woman behind the desk first saw it she remarked on what a good condition it seemed to be in despite having been closed away for so long.

But when she took it for the repair person to look at...apparently it needs new pads...and will cost more than £900 to service. That is quite a lot more than I was thinking. The earliest time they could book it in for would be November. Am going to have a think but it's so expensive!

I bought a few reeds though and a new fluffy cleaning thing. Am going to have a go with it tonight and see how bad it is/how rusty I am.

PatricksViolin · 18/08/2018 15:58

How much are we supposed to practise the extracts? We didn't have much time as we were away till yesterday. Luckily DS has already played a couple of them at a youth orchestra so not completely new to all though (only if he remembers...).

Double and LouieLouie and anyone else, see you all tomorrow. Wondering what time everyone has to leave home...

Melting, that must be quite a shock for you... I would consider how much I would have to pay to buy one with similar quality and would make a decision whether £900 was in fact a good deal. I absolutely love the sound of oboe - it's my most favourite in woodwind family. Enjoy trying it out tonight!

LouieLouie0603 · 18/08/2018 16:03

Currently looking at extracts now 😬😀.
6 hr drive for us- but we are here already- well in Dorset anyway.

PatricksViolin · 18/08/2018 16:40

Staying just one night or having a holiday there? We are relatively close - only two hours driving (according to DH...). We are leaving at around midday then have lunch on way.

G string looks a bit dodgy. Thinking if I should change it now or see if it survives (spare sets are going to be packed anyway)...

Patrick, I would allow considerably more time than 2 hours! The traffic around Stonehenge is usually horrendous and difficult to avoid. You could always leave earlier, take your time and spend longer having lunch. That's what we're planning to do.

Louie, what do your dc play?

PatricksViolin · 18/08/2018 17:11

DH says going down would be fine but coming back would be horrendous. Do you think going down is also quite bad? DH and DS are having fun elsewhere today. They hadn't seen each other more than 3 weeks so they are enjoying each other's company before parting again! I must talk to DH to rearrange our plan for tomorrow when they are back!!

Meltingwax · 18/08/2018 17:42

Thank you alexandra for that recommendation. David's website was one of those I came across when I was looking for potential alternatives this afternoon so it's good to know that you rate him. I will give him a ring on Monday.

I have been having a play around a bit this afternoon with my reeds and I don't think it's too bad at all. The first octave key is sticking so that will need to be looked at. The cat was looking confused by the new noise in the house Grin.

Howarth's still make that model of oboe (s20), it would cost just over £2k to buy one now so it is worth investing in but am still in Shock a bit at the thought of shelling out quite that much!

I hope everyone's DCs enjoy NCO this week!

LouieLouie0603 · 18/08/2018 18:21

Hi Double, dd (11) plays violin,
Dd (9) Percussion.
Staying in Dorset for 2 weeks- seemed better than the 6 hr drive x 6!

Worriedmum42 · 18/08/2018 19:32

Hi, it is a bit delayed but we have been away. I asked a couple weeks back about the ABRSM exams as my daughter was taking her first music exams. Just wanted to say she took her Grade 1 clarinet and cello exams within a week and got a distinction in both (135 and 142 respectively)! We are all very proud of her. Thanks for the previous comments which helped me explain to her what to expect.

That's fantastic worried Star Star

TaggieOHara · 18/08/2018 20:21

Wow - amazing results worried Star

louie I will be at the U10s concert with my parents, and other family. Look out for me there! What does your DC play? PM me if you like Smile. I will be looking out for waffle too!

patrick we are setting off at 8am, so allowing 3.5 hours! It should be less than 2, but took us four hours to get home after dropping DS2 off. The traffic shouldn’t be too bad first thing in the morning but it deteriorates. I second the recommendation to leave in the morning and stop for lunch! That’s what we did on the way down. There are plenty of lovely places to eat nearby.

TrumpetVoluntary · 18/08/2018 21:10

We are here already (staying overnight a few miles away) for the U10s concert tomorrow morning. I was worried that otherwise we wouldn’t get there in time what with traffic plus the difficulty of getting my younger kids out of the house in the morning
The messages and phone calls we have had from DD all say she is having a great time - hope all the other DC are also enjoying it.

stringchild · 18/08/2018 21:21

Patrick - we took 4-5hrs to do a 2.5 journey fiend thst way today; I would defleave more time. tgey have their first rehearsal after checking in so best not to be late if possible as it’s a good settling in process. There are nice cafesHotels in Shaftesbury so I would start outcearkuer and have lunch there.

stringchild · 18/08/2018 21:22

Apols for my dodgy phone again!

TaggieOHara · 18/08/2018 21:41

When I spoke to DS2, I could barely hear him through laughing and shrieking. Apparently his whole dorm was ‘drunk on sugar’, after yet another trip to the tuck shop Hmm. Sounds like a 10yo’s heaven Smile

Trumpet it sounds like your dd has had a great week and I’m glad you enjoyed the concert. Enjoy your holiday now.

Worried, fantastic results!

Just psyching myself up for the car journey to U11 - like we really need another one this week after a trip to Scotland and back! DD1 has declined to join us as she has had so much time in coaches and cars this summer that she just needs a day at home on her own. She will come to next week’s concert though.

Wafflenose · 19/08/2018 08:40

We are leaving for U10s now. I am wearing jeans, black books, dark top and cardigan and another flower in my hair. I'm 5'2" with browny red hair nearly down to my waist. I am bringing Mr Waffle who's is very tall, Goo and my parents.

Doubleup · 19/08/2018 09:27

Enjoy the concert Waffle! This one will be a bit strange for Goo seeing it from another perspective.

stringchild · 19/08/2018 14:33

Trumpet - thought it was him; looked fantastic - piano player was clarinet U12s with dd last year and is so talented too

Trumpetboysmum · 19/08/2018 14:39

String it was an amazing experience for them . The clarinet player/ pianist is phenomenal Smile

stringchild · 19/08/2018 14:56

Well your boy is pretty special too 😀

Trumpetboysmum · 19/08/2018 16:15
