July Music Thread

Hello, I have just realised it's time for a new thread! Feel free to discuss anything musical here - any level at all, from total beginners to advanced, and adult learners are welcome too!

I am a teacher of woodwind, currently limping towards the end of term (July 24th... can't wait!) and have two DDs. Goo is 12 and plays the flute and piano. At the moment, she's doing the bare minimum, but she has won the Y7 music attainment award at her enormous comprehensive secondary school, so we get to go to an awards ceremony next week. Her piano teacher is about to retire, so we're looking for a new one. Rara is 10 and I would say is now a joint first study cellist and clarinettist - it doesn't come easily and she's progressing at an average rate, but a good Grade 4 on both. She spends most of her time reading, drawing, doing origami and swimming for a club.

I have so far managed to get through 27 music medals this term (6 still to go) and 4 Trinity exams (1 ABRSM still to go) and about half of the concerts!

Interesting point about instruments getting hot . Ds is going to Germany next week it's going to be very hot - and all the instruments are going with them on a van or trailer on the coach - not sure which . Fingers crossed all the instruments are ok I have persuaded Ds not to take his expensive trumpet !! Feeling quite relieved that he agreed to listen now - but really not sure how all the string instruments are going to fair

PatricksViolin · 03/07/2018 21:30

We travel to a humid country every summer. Not sure how much it helps but I bought a white case hoping it'll reflect as much sunlight as possible...

foundoutyet · 03/07/2018 21:53

In the end dc dropped it off somewhere and after her school event we went to collect it from there before driving to the concert.
Just had visions of glue melting and her instrument falling apart during her solo

folkmamma · 03/07/2018 22:20

Ah fab! How did the solo go!?

LooseAtTheSeams · 03/07/2018 22:37

Japanese I hear you. Nothing to offer except Flowers and Gin and sympathy!

Hi crazy- good luck in the festival Smile. Hope your JD issues get sorted soon

LooseAtTheSeams · 04/07/2018 08:34

We had to get a surprisingly large, solid case for the bass guitar for last year’s tour. I’m starting to understand why they don’t take the string orchestra - the thought of melting glue is very worrying!
DS1 had a great day yesterday - bass guitar lesson, guitar lesson and drum kit lesson. Thoroughly enjoyed all of them. Now if he could only remember where he’s hidden his Oyster card... it’s clearly time for him to tidy his room!

Trumpetboysmum · 04/07/2018 08:46

Loose Grin do they ever do that ?

LooseAtTheSeams · 04/07/2018 10:02

Grin only under protest and with the threat of everything on the floor going in bin liners!

TheThirdOfHerName · 04/07/2018 11:15

Just heard from DD's flute teacher. She got 60/100 (Trinity). Very relieved for her.

folkmamma · 04/07/2018 11:36

aaaah lovely news Third!!!!

LooseAtTheSeams · 04/07/2018 11:40

Oh well done to her and congratulations, Third! What a relief! Star Cake

littleladsdad · 04/07/2018 13:47

A letter dropped onto our mat this morning that has presented us with an unfortunate dilemma. DS has been offered a place in the NCBBGB - fantastic news! Unfortunately the summer course at Repton School clashes with his county music service trip to Germany. This has been paid for and I imagine a refund would be unlikely. What to do, what to do? What would you do?

Trumpetboysmum · 04/07/2018 14:51

Probably stick with the county now but see it as a good sign for getting in in future difficult one though

Trumpetboysmum · 04/07/2018 15:16

Oh and well done to your ds Smile

TabbyTigger · 04/07/2018 15:39

Amazing news TheThird! Well done do your DD.

And what does your DS want to do littleladsdad? If the money isn’t a huge barrier I’d leave it up to him and what he’d enjoy more!

DD3 has decided she’d like to play the violin. She’s only 5 but has been harping on about it for months now so I’ve finally taken the plunge and she has her first taster lesson tomorrow squashed between KS1 choir and gymnastics so she’s going the exact same way as her sisters. If only all my children were like DS, who chose just one hobby and stuck with it almost exclusively Grin family logistics would be so much easier...

Doubleup · 04/07/2018 16:00

Really pleased for your dd The Third

Trumpetboysmum · 04/07/2018 16:15

Yes sorry I missed that one well done to your dd The third Smile

Trumpetboysmum · 04/07/2018 16:17

Tabby Ds does only do music - just lots and lots of it !! And between that and his sisters many many hobbies I am constantly battling extra curricular timetable clashes Grin lovely that your dd is so keen though

TheThirdOfHerName · 04/07/2018 16:54

Thank you all. Have had a chat with DD and we both agreed that will be her last exam, although she'll carry on with learning.

hertsandessex · 04/07/2018 17:27

Littleladsdad well would depend a bit on what DS wants to do but I would be tempted to send him to Germany and see if NCBBGB can keep his place for next time (explain situation, can't get a refund etc.) I would imagine he will get a chance with NCBBGB again or groups of a similar level. Music tours to Germany not so common (especially as at his new school they don't do overseas tours)
