July Music Thread

Hello, I have just realised it's time for a new thread! Feel free to discuss anything musical here - any level at all, from total beginners to advanced, and adult learners are welcome too!

I am a teacher of woodwind, currently limping towards the end of term (July 24th... can't wait!) and have two DDs. Goo is 12 and plays the flute and piano. At the moment, she's doing the bare minimum, but she has won the Y7 music attainment award at her enormous comprehensive secondary school, so we get to go to an awards ceremony next week. Her piano teacher is about to retire, so we're looking for a new one. Rara is 10 and I would say is now a joint first study cellist and clarinettist - it doesn't come easily and she's progressing at an average rate, but a good Grade 4 on both. She spends most of her time reading, drawing, doing origami and swimming for a club.

I have so far managed to get through 27 music medals this term (6 still to go) and 4 Trinity exams (1 ABRSM still to go) and about half of the concerts!

Congratulations trumpet

Trumpetboysmum · 02/07/2018 18:05

Thank you - he's now having a really loud lesson in big band playing from his teacher - it's so hot that the doors are open - hopefully the neighbours like big band music Grin
Folk I would think she stands a pretty good chance of getting in
I think Ds has chosen some NCO audition pieces - just need some dates now !!

Japanese · 02/07/2018 18:09

Very well done to miniTrumpet - great result!

Our poor hired viola appears to be giving up the ghost in this heat. We are going replacement hunting on Friday. At least it is giving DS tuning practice as the flipping thing is not staying in tune for longer than a minute or too. Poor quality pegs apparently.

TaggieOHara · 02/07/2018 18:26

Glad to hear that your DD like pro corda se - I’ve been meaning to ask. Will she move onto the primary course next year? If so, DS2 will probably be there, depending on chorister commitments! It is phenomenally expensive and very far away, but he loves it... he has already started packing for the summer course Smile ! And he is practising frantically in the hope of being selected for a master class...

Folk - you’d better watch out. My money is on Noo getting into U12s!!

folkmamma · 02/07/2018 18:53

Ha! We'll see Taggie! Thanks for the votes of confidence😙

Although the Kodaly Adagio has been mooted as second piece. It's hard! 🤔

TabbyTigger · 02/07/2018 18:57

Congratulations on the amazing result to mini-trumpet!

se22mother · 02/07/2018 18:57

Taggie she loved it. I think we find out in September whether she will stay in prep or move up. It is hideously expensive but they get so much out of it that I'm prepared to ignore the costConfused

folkmamma · 02/07/2018 19:44

Oooh fingers crossed SE22!! Then she can join mini-Taggie and Noo! I think BFF is going to go next year too... When we were at GH the other week Noo saw one of her Pro Corda friends. Such a lovely organisation and a fab group of kids. I love that they will all go through the different classes together :-)

se22mother · 02/07/2018 21:18

Fingers crossed folk

bostik · 02/07/2018 21:19

Congratulations on the fab result trumpet and thanks se22 and folkmamma for the advice and explanations!

foundoutyet · 02/07/2018 21:22

A quick question please. in this weather, what do you do with your instruments that needs transporting? Tomorrow I may have to leave it for 2 to 3 hours in the car. I will be at an outdoor event and not keen to carry it with me.

TaggieOHara · 02/07/2018 21:25

Ooh - just managed to find mini trumpet’s results! StarStar

Struggling today on epically delayed train with rubbish internet. Will catch up properly later.

littleladsdad · 02/07/2018 21:36

Congratulations on the Distinction Trumpet Star

PatricksViolin · 02/07/2018 23:45

Great news, Trumpet! StarStar

stringchild · 03/07/2018 06:04

Well done trumpet!

folkmamma · 03/07/2018 07:15

foundout - tricky! I wouldn't leave a string instrument in the car. The glue will just melt.. I always take the girls instruments in to work with me rather than leave them in the car, people think I'm nuts! If it's an outdoor thing, I'd take them and try and find some shade to prop them in. Or, is it a secure enough location that you could leave the boot/windows of the car open? And park in the shade??

foundoutyet · 03/07/2018 07:19

Thanks, I was planning for the morning to bring it in to work but for the afternoon I'm stuck, (watching at sportsevent with concert afterwards)

folkmamma · 03/07/2018 07:24

Any way you can ask someone else going to the concert to bring it and leave it with them??

Doubleup · 03/07/2018 07:38

Congrats to the Trunpetboy!

Foundiout, we had a similar dilemma at the weekend. Ididn’t want to leave the oboe or bassoon in the car in case they cracked so ended up carrying them around. Didn’t help that the air con in the car went rogue a ‘clocked’ itself, telling me that it was -40 and putting the heating on high! Grin

stringchild · 03/07/2018 07:42

Foundout - I wouldn’t in this heat; a pain I know!

Japanese · 03/07/2018 20:20

I have had a bad evening with DS and the viola this evening.

Have had a very challenging couple of weeks at work. And there is a lot going on this month with work stuff, exam stuff, end of term, year 6 leavers, parties, etc. Plus I do not cope well in this heat. Am going to be having a logistically-challenging few days trying to fit in everything that needs to be done. I have made time with DS over the last week to practise the viola because of tuning issues he needs help with. And this evening after we'd finished and packed away I was just sitting down to do work I need to do. But first I was gathering together all the bits and pieces for tomorrow including his music and notebook for his viola lesson. The book fell open with his teacher's notes from last week and the pieces he swore blind he was given to work on this week - the ones I have been helping him with all week - were the wrong ones.

I may have shouted quite a lot a bit.
And another m***g string has broken. Angry

Trumpetboysmum · 03/07/2018 20:27

Japanese Flowers he's still young not that I'm sure they get much better as they get a bit older. Most importantly you've helped him anyway and I'm sure he appreciates that even if he has learnt the wrong pieces !! Ds will often enthusiastically tell me what he's going to practise and will still now often " forget" quite a lot of the important stuff in his enthusiasm to play new music or music that he's particularly "into" at any given time . Currently this is big band music Smile

raspberryrippleicecream · 03/07/2018 20:31

Well done to mini trumpet!

PatricksViolin · 03/07/2018 20:49

I often forget when DS says 'he hast to work on this' means 'he WANTS to work on this'...

PatricksViolin · 03/07/2018 20:50

Flowers to Japanese.
